Video: Young Cosmopolitan Israelis Share Their Shocking Racist Views

Resentment of Arabs, minorities and designated foreign enemies ranging from Iranians to Barack Obama is now mainstream in Israeli society.

On May 27, journalist Jesse Rosenfeld and I set out on the streets of Tel Aviv to probe the political opinions of young local residents. We started the day filming at Tel Aviv University, where a group of Jewish and Palestinian Israeli students gathered to protest a proposed law that would criminalize public observance of the Nakba, or the mass expulsion and killing of Palestinians by Zionist militias in 1948. There, we interviewed Palestinian Israeli students about the rising climate of repression, then spoke to another group of students who gathered nearby to heckle their Arab classmates and demand their deportation. A few hundred meters away, two genial business students expressed support for the so-called Nakba law, remarking to us, "If you want to keep democracy, you can't let people protest against the independence of the country."

That evening, Jesse and I took our camera to central Tel Aviv, where thousands were taking part in the annual all-night festival known as White Night. Some revelers took an intermission from the partying to express to us their hatred for the Iranian people. And a group of teenagers launched into a virtually unprompted diatribe against Barack Obama, referring to him as a Nazi, a Muslim, and a "Cushi," which is Hebrew slang for "nigger." When questioned about the source of his opinions, one teenager proudly declared himself a "gezan," or a racist.

See "Feeling The Hate In Tel Aviv":

This video, entitled "Feeling the Hate in Tel Aviv," is the sequel to a piece the Israeli blogger Joseph Dana and I released in June called "Feeling the Hate in Jerusalem." That video, which featured a cast of mostly American Jews in Jerusalem leveling racist vitriol at Obama, stirred immediate controversy, prompting some blogs to remove it on the grounds that it was not "newsworthy." As the "not newsworthy" video began climbing towards 400,000 hits on YouTube, and before YouTube and Vimeo banned it without explanation and without offering me any legal recourse, the Israeli media weighed in.

The video YouTube and Vimeo banned:

Benjamin Hartman, a young correspondent for Ha'aretz who had moved to Israel from his hometown of Austin, Texas, wrote that my video was "circling the internet at a critical velocity on a mission to humiliate the Jewish people." Hartmann concluded that I was "speaking to the wrong crowd at the wrong time of night," a meme that would comprise the key talking point for bloggers and organized Jewish groups (including the Israeli chapter of Democrats Abroad) seeking to discredit and ultimately suppress the video.

Hartmann then offered me advice on where to find the right crowd, and at which time of night they might be on their best behavior. "I hope Blumenthal films his next segment in Tel Aviv, though the results would probably be far less salacious," Hartman wrote. "On a balcony in Florentin, he would ask the drum circle what they think of Obama and through the purple haze would hear only praise for the president, before being forced to listen to a 30-minute account of a recent trip to Nepal."

Unbeknownst to Hartman, who only attempted to interview me days after publishing his review, and then published a piece questioning whether I had been "fueling anti-Semitism," I had already filmed my next segment in Tel Aviv. (And I had already spent an evening, sans camera, with an Israeli hippy on a balcony in Florentin, though he told me through the purple haze that the Palestinian people do not exist and should be immediately transferred to Jordan). Now that I have released my footage from Tel Aviv, I wonder what Hartman and other, even more insecure critics of my first "Feeling the Hate" video will do to ensure that the sequel does not "humiliate the Jewish people." Will they rely on the same old hasbara?

Screaming at a Beatles concert

Israel is a wonderful friend. We give them billions and billions in aid. We bribe their neighbors with billions more in aid to make peace with them. We fight wars for them. We give them unconditional support, both diplomatically and militarily.

They spy on us, steal our technology, make the world hate us, and insult our president for making the unreasonable claim that billions in aid might come with strings attached. With friend like this, who needs enemies?

I'd write more, but I always take comfort in this:

Hating Israel is like screaming at a Beatles concert. No one can hear you, because everyone else is already doing it!"

How tragic that the first modern Jewish state has sunk to such a state of degeneracy.

May the souls of the slain children haunt their dreams.

Israeli Society Is Alarmingly Racist, But Not Like Those Idiots
Posted by: vision on Jul 15, 2009 2:51 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I visited Israel and Palestine a couple of years ago, and I was shocked by the ubiquity of racism among Jewish Israelis (and even the pride in it) as shown in that video. I was also shocked by the lack of racism in Palestinians, though that could have been by chance the people I met -- those that were willing to talk with a Jewish American or who were doing peace and justice work. I met many kind Israelis, some liberal ones, and some doing fantastically courageous solidarity work with and for Palestinians, but the vast majority articulated a sort of low-level racism -- that Arabs are dumber, backwards, violent, etc.

I have spent time in about a dozen societies, and I have never encountered racism even nearly as widespread or as strong as in Israel.

That said, the original video shows a few drunk idiots late at night and lacks any context. It is not reflective of Israeli society as a whole, and I could see why Jews and Israelis would be worried about people seeing that, especially if those people haven't had a lot of other contact with Jews. I thought the final two students at Tel Aviv University in the second video were much more representitive of "typical" Israeli views.

Standing outside the gates to Heaven they refuse to budge demanding that God first find, identify and punish the assailant.

How do you say 'pathologic denial' in Hebrew?

For all that Israel has they remain spiritually impoverished;humility eludes them, denial becomes them and trouble follows them.

Self-righteous victimhood in perpetuity is toxic and nothing good can come from it.
Until Israel/Jews have the courage to confront their part in their own drama, they'll suffer.

- and that's what happens when one would much rather be right than happy. Ultimately they're neither and it shows.

Of the "Stars" of the film, and by comments from them about not voting for Obama, it would seem that these people were Americans. It is of course very likely that they were Israeli/American dual nationals.

I have another idea, maybe the US could deport most if its racist trash to Israel and rid itself of some of the worst elements of society?

Dual nationality doesn't work - how can anyone serve two masters loyally? This is why I am not a UK/US dual national, I stick with the nationality I was born with, British Subject.

It is logical actually.

These opinions are the logical end of keeping your head filled with any sort of religious garbage.
Religious excrement like judaism, (or christianity or islam or whatever) not only destroys logic but poisons the heart.
So-called non-religious beliefs like communism, fascism are no different.

What is needed is for individuals to begin to grow up, to take responsibility for their lives and begin to see that the politicians and the clerics have lied to them and have destroyed their integrity and their real freedom.

A jewish intellectual described the jewish religious establishment in Israel as the whores of the state of Israel. Exactly so.

Wake up and see the deep and deadly dangerous conspiracy between the priests, (mullahs, rabbis, etc). It is overt in Iran, for example, but no less real in Israel. There it is probably more dangerous because the rabbis and Israeli politicians lie about and hide this conjunction of interests. The Iranians are more honest about what they are doing but no more to be trusted.

This is disturbing on another level as a black American

This makes me wonder if as an educated black man with a BBA, years of experience in my field and a solid resume, attitudes like this are the reasons why I have such a difficult time finding work beyond the recession in NYC. These are mostly young American/Israelis and their parents would be the people that I meet with for interviews etc. I want to believe that it is not so but when I walk the halls of corporate America I cannot help but wonder what is actually happening. Is this part of the answer to my questions?

Children as young as 2.....taught to slaughter the Jews and embrace a life cut short by suicide.

Nothing to do with occupation......that's just a convenient excuse to brainwash children.......and Liberals.

Israelis and jews
Posted by: Aquinas on Jul 15, 2009 6:43 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Now once again, what is the real difference between jews and Israelis? Why are Israeli jews insulting Obama? Why is there a concentrated effort to minimize or censor these comments? Why do we continue to give Israel billions of our tax dollars while our own people suffer the hardships of unemployment and the loss of their homes and savings? Who is supporting these punks with their drinking and cussing?
Why are "American" jews spewing hatred for the President of the United States in Israel?
Since Israel is embarked on a program to make Israel for "jews only", why is there a distinction between an Israeli and a jew? Isn't what Israel is doing, being done in the name of all jews? Aren't all jews granted automatic citizenship in Israel? If jews are sharply divided on the issue of Israel, why don't we hear more from the opposition? Have they lost their voices or do they secretly and quietly support the illegal activity of the Israeli jews? Does somebody want their cake and eat it too? Why are there numerous jewish lobbies in the United States for the purpose of supporting Israel's interests and only one or two in opposition? Is it because one side has ALL the money?
Why do we tolerate the ridiculous status of "dual citizenship"? When jews pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States, do they insert the phrase "only part time and as it doesn't conflict with Israel's interests"?
One of the main problems with this "great melting pot" experiment, is that we provided for the existence of "hyphenated Americans" and then wonder why we have such terrible problems with the results. One can only pledge allegiance to one country at a time and dual citizenship is a farce and unworkable. It presumes a commonality of purpose and interests between the two countries, which does not exist and if it did, the countries would be as one, NOT joined in dual citizenship! The American people did not get to vote on this splitting of its citizenry with another country. We should have no room for hyphenated Americans; either accept America, unconditionally, as your country, or feel free to go to the land you feel this pressing need to identify with.
Abolishing dual citizenship is the only remedy for America's constantly being embroiled in the affairs of other nations. The American people didn't get to vote on minimizing the meaning of American citizenship by allowing a hyphenated qualifier. Cuban-Americans in Florida and Mexican-Americans in California, are the best examples of the trouble these "hyphenated Americans" can and will produce in the name of their "native" countries. We are our own worst enemy! Wake up!

There are many ignorant in Israel, who've swallowed the propaganda milk whole just as many have strange rationalizations here. We're no less unjust to Arabs and Muslims, especially seeing how we're the ones enabling Israel to oppress. Obama's talk of "please don't take over more land" doesn't amount too much when we're not making them give any back and even dispatching special mercenary forces for them to use. Instead of overt racism, we just rationalize over it more that either it's only the terrorists we're doing this to, or out of sight out of mind.

Just like there are many here standing up against this racial/religious farce, there are those standing up in Israel, soldiers even, knowing the ways of the Mossad and doing it anyway.

Israeli soldiers admit 'shoot first' policy in Gaza offensive

Burning Conscience: Israeli Soldiers Speak Out

I wish we gave these guys more exposure instead of letting their efforts drift away. Israel government's right wing political stranglehold is very similar to the corporate democrat/republican one here. Just because it controls most things doesn't mean everyone subscribes.

Zionism equals Rascism

Is there any question zionism is rascism? If you google zionism vs. judasim you can understand these rascists. Zionism is not a religion it is anti-judaism. They believe they have a right to attack any non-zionist. The American people should question why McKinney kidnapped on the high seas by the zionists story never made main stream news. This ex congresswoman, presidential candidate was held in a zionist prison by these thugs. Why are americans giving these rascists a penny. Where is the UN? To discuss Israel is not anti semitic, but the zionists use that as a method to shame anyone who speaks against zionist apartheid.

With "friends" like these, do we even wonder why we are hated in Muslim countries. I would really suggest that we divest NOW! As it was the Germans that committed the holocaust against the then European Jews, and it was the British and Americans that took those Jews from the concentration camps and gave them land that was not theirs to give - I believe that we as Americans have done more than our "share for friendship"! We have helped to create the "Hitler" that Israel has become toward the Palestinian people!

Maybe cutting "our" losses (& aid) with Israel is the best way to go! Let the bully nation stand alone - even Mussolini let go in the end!

Israel was founded as a refuge from the horror of the Holocaust - a place where Jews could live free from tyranny.

Now the Israelis, in escaping that past, have assumed the role of tyrant. They have become what was most vile to them.

Even we Native Indians made their shit list as they told an Oneida friend of mine, "Your people never did deserve any land"! You can imagine how that went over. What land do those (Israelis), savages and interlopers deserve? How can these people thumb their noses at the rest of the world and continue to murder Palestinians and steal their land, all the while maintaining their illegal Dimona Nuclear Facilities? Somebody somewhere must have some answers, maybe it's because they are self proclaimed "Chosen Folks"!!!

They consist less than 0.2% of the world population, but more than 22% of the nobel prize winners are jews.

Their land is less than 0.5% of the land in the middle east, and consist 0.0% of natural resources (unlike the rest of the middle east, which consist most of the world's trillion of dollars worthy of oil), yet they are the most powerful country in the middle east

in the past 60 years, 5.5 million jews have kicked more than 1.5 billion muslims ASS

does the term "DON'T FUCK WITH ISRAEL" means anything to you? cause as far as the muslim / arab world - it means nothin. that's why they keep trying to destroy israel, that's why we keep fighting back.

We don't like the arabs, they are a retarded nation (anyone who thinks in 2009 that a woman should stay at home, and not be allowed to work, is restarted - and ALL the muslims nation who goes under the SHREA law (the "holy" muslim laws of life) thinks exactly that.

So yeah, we hate the arabs, and we hate all the rest of you morons who don't have a clue what the israeli-arab conflict is about.

You think WE'RE racist? try visiting europe / united states / australia. you'll meet the neo nazis, KKK, right wing extrimists who want to deport / kill all immigrents and so on and so on.

so ya'll can go fuck yourself. as long as the arabs continue to declare "we want to destroy israel" (the only nation on earth which is being threatened for annihilation) - we'll continue to HATE arabs

You can go to any country in the world and hear people say stupid, racist things. This video makes it seem that if he were in Cairo, or Damascus, people would be all love all the time. Puh-leeze.

Like I posted to an earlier article... why tell only of Israeli racism, or boycott only Israel? I think there is more to this, why is just Israel singled out like this. I wish Alternet would not post these articles that seem to expect perfection in one country, when all countries are problematic, many much more so than Israel.

I saw this doc the other day, about Jews and Arabs doing stuff together

perhaps the problem is heterosexuals, they are the violent and racist ones.

The middle east in general makes even 'Merkaans look positively enlightened. I bet if you took those cams to the streets of Damascus, you'd get just as much of an earful as when in Tel Aviv.

Doesn't excuse the sickness and pathological nature of anyone, Israelis included. Just that the shitstorm of "Extreme Othering" is pretty damned widespread. And it needs to stop.

One thing I note about any sort of "racial" extremist: an almost total incapability of empathy and and absence of the literal ability to imagine oneself directly in another's shoes. For the three major delusions... I mean religions of the western world to oddly overlook their own traditions which warn them about this sort of miscreance, is very very telling.

I saw this doc the other day, about Jews and Arabs doing stuff together
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUY8G4jjzrs
perhaps the problem is heterosexuals, they are the violent and racist ones.
