Amnesty: Israel Used Children as Human Shields in Gaza

Amnesty accused Israeli forces of using children as human shields and conducting wanton attacks on civilians.

Amnesty on Thursday accused Israeli forces of war crimes in Gaza, saying they used children as human shields and conducted wanton attacks on civilians, in a report rejected as "unbalanced" by Israel.

The London-based human rights group also accused Hamas of war crimes, but said it found no evidence to support Israeli claims that Gaza's Islamist rulers used civilians as human shields during Israel's massive 22-day offensive.

It reiterated its call for international arms embargoes against Israel and Hamas, and called for "criminal investigations in national courts" under universal jurisdiction wherever there is sufficient evidence of war crimes.

"Much of the destruction was wanton and resulted from direct attacks on civilian objects," Amnesty said in a report on the December-January war on the Gaza Strip.

In numerous cases, Israeli troops forced Palestinians to stay in one room of their home while turning the rest of the house into a base and sniper position, "effectively using the families, both adults and children, as human shields and putting them at risk," the group said.

"Intentionally using civilians to shield a military objective, often referred to as using 'human shields' is a war crime," Amnesty said.

One Palestinian quoted in the report said Israeli troops forced him on three occasions to go into a house to check whether gunmen holed up inside were still alive.

The report said it found no evidence Palestinian fighters directed civilians to shield military objectives from attacks, forced them to stay in buildings used by militants, or prevented them from leaving commandeered buildings.

But it said Palestinian armed groups fired hundreds of rockets into southern Israel. "Such unlawful attacks constitute war crimes and are unacceptable," said Donatella Rovera, who led an Amnesty mission to Gaza and southern Israel.

Amnesty also accused Hamas of endangering Palestinian civilians by firing rockets from residential areas and storing weapons and ammunition there.

More than 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis died during the offensive Israel launched in response to rocket fire by militants in the impoverished and overcrowded territory.

Amnesty said 300 children were among those killed.

It said hundreds of civilians were killed in attacks carried out using high-precision weapons. "Others, including women and children, were shot at short range when posing no threat to the lives of the Israeli soldiers," it said.

"Wilful killings of unarmed civilians are war crimes," Amnesty said.

It said Israel's use of white phosphorus shells was also a clear breach of international law.

White phosphorus is not illegal if used as a smokescreen in open areas "but it should not be used in a densely populated area as it was used here," Rovera told AFP, adding that her team saw Palestinians with "hideous burns" from white phosphorus shells.

The Israeli military called the report "unbalanced" and "distorted."

"The slant of their report indicates that the organisation succumbed to the manipulations of the Hamas terror organisation," it said in a statement.

The military insisted its forces used "fighting methods and advanced technology to minimise harm to the civilian population while engaging terrorists who were operating from densely populated areas and using the local population as 'human shields'."

It also accused Amnesty of ignoring "the blatant violations of international law perpetrated by Hamas."

Thirteen pages of the 117-page study are devoted to the conduct of Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups. In the report, Amnesty calls on Hamas to "publicly renounce its policy of unlawful rocket attacks against civilian population centres in Israel."

What is it about 'hypocrisy' that Israel does not see? You would think it would fairly obvious. Where's the kindness they so wished for themselves at one time ???

Acording to Israel’s military its forces used "fighting methods and advanced technology to minimise harm to the civilian population…” and killed 1400 people, mostly non-combatants, including 300 children. Imagine they had not used those methods. Israel’s honesty is below zero.

As to the reader who proposes that Americans boycott Israel, how can you do that when America is practically a part of Israel’s property, including nearly all US media?

but we all know that muslims used their children over and over, firing rockets from schools, hospitals etc.. Isreal has nothing but the highest regard for children, muslims on the other hand will throw them under a bus if it furthers their cause.. wow.. much like Obama does to his "friends". It must be that muslim heritage.

With a kill ratio overwhelmingly favorable to the IDF at 100+ to one, you have to be deceitful to even mention Hamas DIY rockets alongside the world's third or fourth most sophisticated military. No mention of the IDF's use of depleted uranium clearly outlines who paid for the report.

Fortunately, all over the world, even the most thoroughly indoctrinated wake up to the fact that Israel is a rogue state with increasingly little credibility to stand on.

Human Shields?

The Israeli people only wanted to have a homeland where they could live without being treated as they were by "Christians". they fell for the lie of being returned to "their" homeland which they had been expelled from some 1800 odd years before.
Moses had given warnings just before he died as to how the Children of Israel would fare in the future if they did not adhere to the Word of God. They chose their own pathway and suffered accordingly. If they want to blame someone then they need to blame Moses for the state they are in--despised and oppressed because it was Moses who made those statements.

Hitler's job was to "remove" this "blot" in society and he was backed by the so called Christian Church. Because of the inteferance of the Allies, he was not able to complete his assignment. It was then decided to get the situation of the return of the Jews to "their" Palestinian homeland and when enough of them were there to slowly remove their protection by dividing the land up and making it virtually completely unprotectable and undefendable. That is where the land of Israel is at this time. They are really ready to be slaughtered on a bigger scale than Hitler did. If you want to get rid of them then you must be also agreeable to their extermination. Amnesty's assessment does not cover the blatant works of the Hamas as I mention later.
When people are subjected to continuous needling as the jews are at this time, it is my guess that sooner or later they will fight back and that is what has happened.

Since the Israeli Army has access to very high sattelite technology, they were able to determine from exactly where Hamas was firing their rockets, from areas in which children were. the retaliative actions of the Israeli army would certainly cause much damage to children because their purpose was to destroy the rocket launchers, (stuff supplied by Iran) as quick as possible so they were quickly put out of action. Hamas had NO care about their children, The Israelis are blamed for Hamas's actions.
What a lot of drivel. There are photos that were taken of Israeli soldiers who were nursing the little Palestinian children and comforting them, I have not seen any photos of hamas soldiers nursing and comforting any of the Jewish children that they had damaged. Methinks this is a very one sided argument that you have presented. I hate war and man's inhumanity to his fellow man,

Although I do not believe that it was in God's design to give back to the Jewish Race, a homeland that was to be the Leaders of the world as was originally going to be given them, IF, they followed the Laws given to them and did it faithfully, I do believe they have a right to live freely and without this constant hammering that they have to put up with.

In the Prophecies in the Book of Daniel, the Jews were given some 490 years to get their act together and be the Missionaries to the world to bring the Gospel to the world that they were supposed to be doing. At the end of that time they would be dispersed into all other countries and that is what happened.

The Jew is probably the greatest witness to the validity of the Seventh Day Sabbath and now it is the purpose of the rest of the world to eliminate this witness from the face of the earth. IF you were a Sabbath Keeping Jew and your life was hanging on a thin thread of hope, YOU WOULD FIGHT FOR YOUR EXISTENCE TOO. Let us be fair in our judgements and assessments, not one eyed.

Amnesty - the new face of terrorism :.?

"The slant of [the Amnesty International] report indicates that the organisation succumbed to the manipulations of the Hamas terror organisation."

THE Amnesty International? You have to be pretty desperate to slag a reputable worldwide humanitarian organization as the tool of Hamas.

Let's see what else this "terrorist front" proposes in their quest for world domination.

"Israel must co-operate fully with independent Gaza fact-finding mission." No!

"Abolish the death penalty - Texas carries out 200th execution under current governor." What? This could lead to the collapse of civilization as we know it!

"USA: Judge orders Guantánamo detainee released after seven and a half years in detention without charge." And there you have it - proof positive that Amnesty is acting on behalf of TERRORISTS.

After all, if we can't just put people in jail without cause, or randomly bomb them into submission or execute them as we see fit ... well then, what does that say about LIBERTY? You know, FREEDOM? Amnesty International, the terrorist shill - what next?

US MSM, including NYTimes is silent on the story

I just browsed NYT and found no mention of this story.

Only reference to Israeli war crimes burried in small font in the bottom of the page is the following story:

"Gaza Aid Boat Passengers still in Israeli custody."

Yet, in bold font and much more prominent is the following news on NYT:

"Suspected Nazi said Fit to Stand Trial"

NYT burries the on going Israeli war crimes and gives prominence to some old Nazi war criminal for crimes committed 60+ years ago.

This is the reason why Holocaust is fast losing its significance: we are walking in Nazi's footsteps while demanding that the world still remember and hunt down every single Nazi war criminal.

but rather why is Israel so unloveable?

When American Jews address and confront this on their dime, Israel might heal, in the mean time its a toxic zipcode and while it is truly their problem its infected us now too, making this country very sick.

Good job Israel and just think, you've no one to blame but yourselves - and that's what you hate most of all.

Humility eludes you, denial becomes you and trouble follows you.

Jews and Israelis

It is readily understood that Plato's Greece and imperial Rome bear scant
resemblance to contemporary Greece and Italy.

Because of various factors, including the accelerated time, European Jewry--much of which was slaughtered in the pogroms and especially the Holocaust--is not the same as the Jews who occupy Israel.

After the European slaughter a kind of Social Darwinism took hold, contributing greatly to what might be called the orthodox Israeli attitude, a deplorable combination of nationalism and perceived racial superiority which has fatefully aped the Nazi genociders in its unforgiving punishment of Palestinians.

To be a dissenting, socially activist Jew now, as, for example, Chomsky, is comparable in its way to being a dissenting, socially activist German during The Reich; which is to say, an enemy of the people, vilified, self-hating, guilty to the core.

In truth, it is the impoverished Palestinian--also a Semite, lest we forget--who most resembles the holocausted Jew.

Why is ONLY Israel the target of Boycotts

Why is only Israel the target of boycotts? Why not China or Honduras for instance? If you are for rights for women, the last place you should boycott is Israel.
Yes, its a messy situation, attrocities on both sides. But if you were defending yourself against those sworn to your destruction, playing fair all the time would not be in your playbook-- count on it.
Lets boycott Sri Lanka for the attrocities there, or so many other countries including our own.
It seems to me that whenever there is war, bad things happen. It is just that due to the situation there is war in Israel every few years.
I think the call to boycott just Israel is about something else.

Bravo! The idiotic and murderous Israeli rampage in Gaza is testimony to the failed policy of militarism and vicious oppression of the Palestinians, seized upon as a means of allowing Israel to keep the illegal settlements in the West Bank (even if it means permanent civil war).

It's Amazing to Me
Posted by: ATH on Jul 3, 2009 11:16 PM

How these Israeli "Zionists," who believe they have the "God with a capital G given right" to steal the land of the Palestinian people and keep this entire race in a giant prison which is the decades-old Israeli military occupation, are not viewed as the "extremist terrorists" they are--and are more and more being seen to be, even in American--like their Muslim counterparts are. The Israelis treat their animals better than they treat the Palestinian people. It should also be noted that Hamas, when they're said to be firing rockets into "Israel" (although it is still wrong) one has to remember that much of "Israel" is really Palestine, according to international law. Israel gets away with what it does--including being a secret nuclear power--solely because of American help, economic and military backing. This is why Muslims dislike us, and much of the rest of the world. We appear as the ultimate hypocrits. We sentenced to death and life imprisonment-rightfully so--the Judges, High Officials, and Soldiers of the German Nazis, for the exact same crimes as those committed against Iraq by the Bush regime. We didn't allow "I was only following orders" to be an excuse, either. But the War Criminals of Israel and those of the Bush regime will never be held accountable, whereas Hamas probably will be either held accountable or outright assassinated...

Off topic, I can't believe the article suggesting that religion might be a cure for our arrogance! History has shown that religion has been one of the driving forces of "religious arrogance" as well as a force of division and violence. I do believe true spiritual awakening--akin to that experienced under certain psychotropic chemicals, or that experienced by monks and shamans who have mastered meditation. But it will probably never arise from any dogmatic religion, as these tend to lead one astray, IMO. For instance, Jesus didn't like for people to pray in the open. Jesus warned of how false idols cloak themselves in righteousness in order to work inequity and 'evil.' Jesus would not be happy with The Church, which is more of a political than a spiritual institution. Jesus said to pray in one's closet. The teachings of Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Lao-tse and others are all remarkably similar, yet look at how everyone defines them by their differences? Yet, they all said these basic things: treat each other as you would be treated yourself; do not get too attached to material posessions or they will possses you; and, do not kill each other. These basics are taught by every 'prophet' I named, and others which I didn't. Yet, none of the followers of any of the religions I named obey these rules, especially the "golden rule," teaching, and the one about not killing each other.

It is hard to feel sympathy with the Israelis just as it is hard to feel sympathy with the Americans, currently slaughtering babies in Pakistan.

They share the same national guilt’s in allowing themselves to be hoodwinked into evil, but they know not what they do.

The evil luciferian elite that control the world, funded and created the nightmare that was Nazi Germany, forcing Jewry into this nightmare paranoia that allows them to steal land, imprison innocents, commit the same genocide from which they themselves have suffered and not see the irony in that.

Time for truth, time for reconciliation, time for renunciation, time to reach out our hands, our hearts and especially our minds to those that have fallen under the evil spell and help them to throw off the shackles of evil and rejoin us in the great project of healing and building that is nearly upon us. Now is the time.
