Spending $102 Billion a Year on 800 Worldwide Military Bases Is Bankrupting the Country
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest World headlines via email.
The following is an introduction from Tom Engelhardt: Along with postcards of cowboys riding jackalopes and giant berries on flatcars, there's a brand new entry in the American gigantism sweepstakes: an embassy complex to be built in Islamabad, Pakistan, for -- if you assume the normal cost overruns on such projects -- what's likely to be close to a billion dollars. If that doesn't make the U.S. number one in the imperial hubris footrace for all eternity, what will? The question is: with its projected "large military and intelligence contingent," and its "surge" of diplomats, will that embassy also issue the largest visas on the planet?
Here's the strange thing: The embassy story was broken at the end of May by the superb journalists at McClatchy News (in this case, Warren P. Stroebel and Saeed Shah). As part of what Shah, in the Christian Science Monitor, estimates as a staggering "$2-billion-plus price tag on a revamped diplomatic presence for the United States in Afghanistan and Pakistan," they reported that an appropriation of $736 million for embassy construction had quietly made its way through both houses of Congress without a peep from anyone. This news, however, seemed to plunge off a steep cliff into a deep well of silence. Indicative as the Obama administration's decision to build such an imperial monstrosity may be of a longer-term commitment to a wider war in the Af-Pak (as in Afghanistan-Pakistan) theater of operations, it evidently proved of no interest to anyone here.
The story was not widely picked up or played up significantly. Despite the fact that major news operations have been bolstering their staffs in Pakistan, there has been no further reporting on the appropriation, the plans for the embassy, or what it all might mean. As far as I can tell, nowhere in the United States did a mainstream editorial page decry, challenge, or even discuss the development. Charlie Rose didn't gather experts to consider it, nor did the Newshour with Jim Lehrer seem to think it worth exploring. Letters of outrage at the thought of those desperately needed funds heading Islamabad-wards didn't pour into local newspapers (perhaps because few knew it was happening and those who did saw it as just another humdrum story about making the U.S. safer in a dangerous world). I've seen no obvious congressional attempts to oppose the passage of the money. The general attitude is evidently: Been there, done that (in Iraq, as a matter of fact, in the Bush years).
Maybe in a world where near-trillion-dollar bailouts are the norm, a mere three-quarters of a billion for a fortress of an embassy seems like so much chump change, the sort of news that only Democracy Now! would even consider significant. Fortunately, Chalmers Johnson, author of The Blowback Trilogy, and an expert on U.S. military bases abroad, did notice, understood its significance, and has now put it in his gun sights. (Catch my TomDispatch audio interview with Johnson about our Empire of Bases by clicking here). -- Tom Engelhardt

Although, to be fair, the $700 billion bailout of a corrupt bankers on Wall Street was an even more wasteful use of taxpayer dollars than is the overseas network of foreign bases.
Likewise, the bloated nuclear and biological weaponry (oh, I mean, 'defense') programs should have gotten the axe long ago - but there's no better time than now. That would save another $50 billion or so (there are lots of hidden costs involved as well).
Please notice that our next biggest military competitor, China, spends 1/10th what we do on the military - and they seem to be getting closer and closer to 'economic overlords' every day - they are the largest single holder of U.S. Treasury securities outside the Federal Reserve, right? Not that they want to see the value of those securities plummet - but still...
Anyway, for starters, how about shutting down the base in Honduras?
Then, maybe we could get on to shutting down the 100? 200? 300? bases that remain in Iraq...

We have a capitalist economy and Obama is a capitalist; ergo, he will defend capitalism. E.g. billions to the bankers who are responsible for the fuck up;
Maybe I misheard, but I understood that our troops would leave Iraq? - well, not exactly leave as such, but they will move down the road a mile or so!!!
Didn't I hear that the world needs peaceful co-operation between different faiths? - but only when we have killed a few thousand more unacceptable Muslims in a country where we have no right to be, supporting a corrupt puppet leader whose only creditability is his expertise in licking Western Arse. And don't forget the fundamental fact that capitalist economies NEED war to function. (1984 describes it well) Scrapping war footing = massive unemployment + no income from sales of weaponry to SA, Israel, and every other fascist states.
If anything, Obama is more corrupt than Bush. At least we all knew that Bush was insane and had a rough idea who was pulling the strings to make him dance and bought him his colouring books!
Obama promised difference and, above all hope, but has failed to live up to anything. War is expanding with "surge" mentality and yet more innocents are being killed. Bankers, stock-brokers et al are still living exotic life-styles whilst others lose their homes and hope for the future. Expect nothing from Obama, because you will only receive the crumbs from rich-mens tables, you will only be given what capitalism will allow.

It took Obama just 4 months to run up a bill that dwarfs that, and he's still spending!
That said we do need to reduce the bases..The less countries we help, the better off we are.

Shut it down totally? That will probably never happen. No politician has the guts to initiate such a thing. But is can be and should be curtailed.
The American people will one day wake up and realize that as long as we are pissing away so much cash on armaments that only make the world a dangerous place in which to live, our social infrastructure will only continue to disintegrate.

But what about the cost of the wars themselves in Iraq and, crazily escalating, in Afghanistan? How many trillions of dollars have they cost and are continuing to cost?
And those mega-expenditures are routinely omitted from actuarial accounts of the US's economic meltdown which is massively impacting working and middle-class Americans, along with those "invisible" Americans who are poor, in-need-of-medical-attention-without insurance, and homeless.

the facts and figures finally revealed. I spoke
about our imperialistic bases repeatedly during
my camaign 2007-08. That's right, I was a 3rd
Party candidate for President and I mentioned
this outrage of military base expense on my
website; however, no one was listening. The MSN
and the people were mesmerized and intoxicated
with only one candidate. But that's O.K., because now, on so many issues, I can honestly
say: "I told you so". As soon as enough patriotic Americans wake up from their cocoon of denial, there will be a revolution and if
called upon, my colleagues and I will lead
America back onto the right track, with hope,
promise and a copy of the Constitution in our
hands. Thanks again for publicizing this scandal. By the way, at last count, there were
at least 823 'American' military bases and
outposts in every corner of the world!

I moved overseas soon after the Supreme Court illegally gave the 2000 election to the traitors & mass murderers that prompted the attacks of "9/11" [Bush/Cheney] and I've never regretted leaving. The stolen election, rabid christian oppression, stupid 'drug war', and an extremely modest retirement plan made it the right thing to do, for me. Never been happier...except for the constant stream of bad news, fascistic policies, incompetent leadership, highest levels of corruption & hypocrisy, and rapidly sinking economy that keeps coming out of America. We've all been lied to for the past 50 odd years. Closing most or all of those bases would be a good beginning!

The political system in US needs to change, until oligarchy is enthroned nothing will change. After all, you cannot beat them by playing according tot heir own rules.

It's just another instance where big money talks and the people are left holding the bag.
I do think thet the health care issue has caaused many more of the not foaming at the mouth people to start connecting dots; how lobbyist money and the corporate news structure is controlling perception and votes. It's going to take an enormous amount of public will and civil action to change much of anything concrete,
It's sad in general and it's sad that so many people still are more worried about Jon and Kate than issues like our severely bloated military, which seriously impacts their daily lives.
One thing for sure - kudos to Eisenhower who saw this coming. He most famously emphasized the danger of the military industrial complex in his presidential farewell address, but Thom Hartmann has played clips of him addressing this issue in 1953 or so, saying that for every bomber built we could build so many schools.

Obama is far from being a fascist, but he seems to have no political will whatsoever. Apparently, if there's a neocon in the room, Obama is putty. :(

To do what? At most dangerous, be a security guard for energy interests and the international banking system. At worst, do nothing. Get drunk. Find a whore. Have local communities educate your kids for free.

This July 4th, do something for your country and maybe make history for the biggest group donation to a Congressional race in one day. But more importantly, help us end the wars!

the facts and figures finally revealed. I spoke
about our imperialistic bases repeatedly during
my camaign 2007-08.

Oh, right, sorry, I forgot. Those programs would benefit 90% of US citizens and they have no power. This was it benefits richest 10% who have all the power.
