Really, haven't we been waiting long enough?

Although, to be fair, the $700 billion bailout of a corrupt bankers on Wall Street was an even more wasteful use of taxpayer dollars than is the overseas network of foreign bases.

Likewise, the bloated nuclear and biological weaponry (oh, I mean, 'defense') programs should have gotten the axe long ago - but there's no better time than now. That would save another $50 billion or so (there are lots of hidden costs involved as well).

Please notice that our next biggest military competitor, China, spends 1/10th what we do on the military - and they seem to be getting closer and closer to 'economic overlords' every day - they are the largest single holder of U.S. Treasury securities outside the Federal Reserve, right? Not that they want to see the value of those securities plummet - but still...

Anyway, for starters, how about shutting down the base in Honduras?

Then, maybe we could get on to shutting down the 100? 200? 300? bases that remain in Iraq...

It was wonderful to see the optimism and euphoria that greeted the Obama victory, but all of you holding your breath, waiting for great things to happen, can now breathe normally again! 'Cos it aint gonna happen - not now - not ever.
We have a capitalist economy and Obama is a capitalist; ergo, he will defend capitalism. E.g. billions to the bankers who are responsible for the fuck up;
Maybe I misheard, but I understood that our troops would leave Iraq? - well, not exactly leave as such, but they will move down the road a mile or so!!!
Didn't I hear that the world needs peaceful co-operation between different faiths? - but only when we have killed a few thousand more unacceptable Muslims in a country where we have no right to be, supporting a corrupt puppet leader whose only creditability is his expertise in licking Western Arse. And don't forget the fundamental fact that capitalist economies NEED war to function. (1984 describes it well) Scrapping war footing = massive unemployment + no income from sales of weaponry to SA, Israel, and every other fascist states.
If anything, Obama is more corrupt than Bush. At least we all knew that Bush was insane and had a rough idea who was pulling the strings to make him dance and bought him his colouring books!
Obama promised difference and, above all hope, but has failed to live up to anything. War is expanding with "surge" mentality and yet more innocents are being killed. Bankers, stock-brokers et al are still living exotic life-styles whilst others lose their homes and hope for the future. Expect nothing from Obama, because you will only receive the crumbs from rich-mens tables, you will only be given what capitalism will allow.

I regard the Bush II administration as a botched fascist takeover, so it made sense they would build ridiculously large buildings. It is a classic peccadillo of fascism, and the Bushies were nothing if not Nazi wannabees.

Obama is far from being a fascist, but he seems to have no political will whatsoever. Apparently, if there's a neocon in the room, Obama is putty. :(

You're focusing on military bases to DEFLECT the actual COST of maintaining the US empire overseas. The US spends 1 TRILLION DOLLARS to maintain it's empire.

America is never going to be saved until we cure the Military Industrial Complex's addiction to the bulk of our national treasure.

Shut it down totally? That will probably never happen. No politician has the guts to initiate such a thing. But is can be and should be curtailed.

The American people will one day wake up and realize that as long as we are pissing away so much cash on armaments that only make the world a dangerous place in which to live, our social infrastructure will only continue to disintegrate.

Free Housing, retirement benefits, no layoff policy, "socialized medicine", free eats(not stamps, but even better).

To do what? At most dangerous, be a security guard for energy interests and the international banking system. At worst, do nothing. Get drunk. Find a whore. Have local communities educate your kids for free.

Rome fell because the frontiers of the empire were too vast to sustain. She had to pour all of her treasure into manning the barriers. The tax burdens fell upon those who could least afford the burden. Her armies consisted of unreliable mercenaries. She imported more than she exported. The Roman infrastructure began to crumble. Sound familiar? America needs to get out of the empire business and get out now. It's time for business to follow the flag and not the reverse. We cannot be, we should not be the world's policeman. I cannot imagine what it must feel like to have foreign troops running around my town, destroying property and life, interfering with commerce, etc. Why are we so complacent and accepting of our military being placed all over the world. Why are we willing to trade our domestic well being for this tyranny in other countries. Perhaps Europeans have a better standard of living because they are not trying to colonize the entire world anymore.

The imperial US embassies dotting the "third world" or currently being erected or reinforced are filthy.

But what about the cost of the wars themselves in Iraq and, crazily escalating, in Afghanistan? How many trillions of dollars have they cost and are continuing to cost?

And those mega-expenditures are routinely omitted from actuarial accounts of the US's economic meltdown which is massively impacting working and middle-class Americans, along with those "invisible" Americans who are poor, in-need-of-medical-attention-without insurance, and homeless.

This was a remarkable expose. It's good to see
the facts and figures finally revealed. I spoke
about our imperialistic bases repeatedly during
my camaign 2007-08. That's right, I was a 3rd
Party candidate for President and I mentioned
this outrage of military base expense on my
website; however, no one was listening. The MSN
and the people were mesmerized and intoxicated
with only one candidate. But that's O.K., because now, on so many issues, I can honestly
say: "I told you so". As soon as enough patriotic Americans wake up from their cocoon of denial, there will be a revolution and if
called upon, my colleagues and I will lead
America back onto the right track, with hope,
promise and a copy of the Constitution in our
hands. Thanks again for publicizing this scandal. By the way, at last count, there were
at least 823 'American' military bases and
outposts in every corner of the world!

Great piece. What is remarkable is how passive the great majority of the American public is, in the face of relentless squandering of trillions of US taxpayer dollars on useless weapons, unnecessary overseas military bases, unnecessary wars, etc. etc. Can they be so stupid? Go to Bill Moyers the Journal and see his most recent program on the exploding hunger and poverty,as Wall Street gets billions. Coal companies have destroyed 500 mountain tops, most states are losing revenues at staggering rates all this while we are descending into a global depression as our military is also sucking us dry. These are very dark times and things are out of control.

Mere 'citizen services' are a bore (& overpriced) and all real interest is dedicated to American business interests or clandestine CIA operations!

I moved overseas soon after the Supreme Court illegally gave the 2000 election to the traitors & mass murderers that prompted the attacks of "9/11" [Bush/Cheney] and I've never regretted leaving. The stolen election, rabid christian oppression, stupid 'drug war', and an extremely modest retirement plan made it the right thing to do, for me. Never been happier...except for the constant stream of bad news, fascistic policies, incompetent leadership, highest levels of corruption & hypocrisy, and rapidly sinking economy that keeps coming out of America. We've all been lied to for the past 50 odd years. Closing most or all of those bases would be a good beginning!

It's bizarre that it hardly gets talked about. So many legislators wring their hands over how much providing a true public health option would be but don't blink at all while authorizing hundreds of billion up to trillions funding Wall Street and of course our grossly, unnecessarily funded military.

It's just another instance where big money talks and the people are left holding the bag.

I do think thet the health care issue has caaused many more of the not foaming at the mouth people to start connecting dots; how lobbyist money and the corporate news structure is controlling perception and votes. It's going to take an enormous amount of public will and civil action to change much of anything concrete,

It's sad in general and it's sad that so many people still are more worried about Jon and Kate than issues like our severely bloated military, which seriously impacts their daily lives.

One thing for sure - kudos to Eisenhower who saw this coming. He most famously emphasized the danger of the military industrial complex in his presidential farewell address, but Thom Hartmann has played clips of him addressing this issue in 1953 or so, saying that for every bomber built we could build so many schools.

Dear Friends: Since My first visit to the Internet some years ago I recall telling family & Friends "Hey it's only a matter of time now" before the Cat is Out of the Bag and everyone is Forced out of there Mental Coma and becomes aware of all that has "REALLY & HONESTLY" taken place since they Rubbed out the Kennedy Family, all anyone needs to do is go back and listen to just a few of the Speeches JFK made prior to his Brutal Assassination and then follow the Wealth Trail and the direction it took off in to know who did what when that was Threatened. Now you can remain Numb between the ears and STAY asleep and just continue your life as per the Norm like 90% of this country has just take a step back and look at most of our Larger City's and the condition they are in and It Fall's on you like a Ton of bricks Instead of putting all our local People back to work Rebuilding our falling apart City's and the Infrastructures under them they do what is called "Patch and Pray" then move on to the next pot hole never doing what really needs to be done Because that would take to much Cash away from the 125 Bilderberger Familys that have been Stealing it since WW2
! Can you imagine what kind of people you have to be to be able to Murder an entire family just because they are trying to Help Americans live a Better life while at the same time Fixing america ?
