While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was making a major foreign policy speech at Tel Aviv University Sunday, Israeli police outside the university attacked international protesters of Israel's invasion of Gaza, illegal settlements and the apartheid wall.

Heavy-handed police treatment of the unarmed, peaceful members of the CODEPINK delegation there began immediately after they unfurled several pink banners that read "Free Gaza" and "End the Occupation." CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin and New York activist Zool Zulkowitz were physically dragged across the street from their original protest site next to the entrance gate to Bar Ilan University where audience members and press entered the university complex to attend the speech.

Several hours later, a French journalist and member of the CODEPINK delegation, was arrested as she crossed a small street in an attempt to take photos of the demonstration. As she was placed in an Israeli police car, several members of the delegation converged to determine why the journalist was being held.

Israeli police and military violently shoved the group back into a wall. Delegation member Tighe Barry from Santa Monica, Cali. was struck in the face with the butt of a military rifle and pushed to the ground where he could barely breathe. He was taken by ambulance to the Trauma Center of Tal-Hashomer hospital in Tel Aviv where he was treated for a concussion, an injured neck and an asthma attack. Benjamin and several other delegation members were bruised in the arms and upper body from being shoved and manhandled by the police and military.

The journalist was taken to a local police station and released an hour later without charges.  Mr. Barry was treated overnight at the hospital.

The CODEPINK delegation has requested the Israeli police and military investigate the brutality used by their forces on the peaceful, non-violent protesters.

When President Obama spoke in Cairo on June 4, a separate CODEPINK delegation that had just returned from six days in Gaza in early June, held a demonstration right outside Cairo University holding signs that read "Stop funding Israeli War Crimes."  Egyptian police allowed the demonstration to take place.

But not so in Israel.

"Is this the great democracy that the U.S. taxpayers pay for with $3 billion dollars a year?" Benjamin cried, as she was being dragged away by the police.

Whether in Iran, the U.S. or Israel, the average citizen seeking peace and justice is brutalized under these repressive regimes. An Israeli, an American and an Iranian who want simple peace and social justice all have more in common with each other than they do with the so-called "leaders" of their (dis)respective nations. We need international solidarity with all of the people in this world who want to throw off their oppressors and try to create a healthier, happier, saner and more sustainable way of life. An injustice to any is an injustice to all.

Nihilo Zero

Israel has carte blanche to do whatever it likes within its borders or even the lands it occupies. It knows that when push comes to shove it will always be financed and defended by the United States of America. Any UN security council resolution even mildly critical if Israel will be vetoed by the US. Even if the US is over its head in debt, funds to give to Israel will somehow be found.

Why would anybody be supprised by police brutality against protesters in israel?

Did cheney Send his Dept of Election Fraud to Israel before their assignement in Iran? God knows CheneyCorp must have warmongers in both Israel and Iran to keep up the MIC's profit margins.
And What would have happen in Pakistan had Bhouto not been assasinated...Who was on Cheney's Hit List?
It is absurd to call anyone who despises the Israeli Gov't 'Anti semite'...The majority of Americans hated the Bush Admin because We LOVE this country and Her people.
Frankly I think the Israelis Got duped Just like we did in '00 &'04, as the Iranians just did (again?).
Where were all those Duel citizens during the Isreali campaign and election process- 'visiting family' in Israel?
After 2 election in this country marred in hanging Chads, butterfly ballots, voter caging, 'Nov 5th' flyers, shortages on ballots/machines, malfuntions of equipment, Pre Redistricting, Primary deck stacking....How could any one in this country think such foreign elections could not have been also rigged.
I want to see the passport activity of all those involved in W's '00 & '04 "elections".
Netan the Yahoo is as much an illegitmate 'elected Leader' as AhMeJahadist and Wdumbfuck.

Yes it is! And with the carte blanche given to Israel by the US this is exactly what happens! The next time someone speaks about the devastation inflicted by the Nazi's and how we should never forget, ask them if that same remembrance should not be applied to the Palestinians who daily suffer under Israeli democratic oppression!

The fact that the voters in israel have chosen to once again return the evil Netanyahu to power shows where their true goals lie! He has been pretty damn open about his desire to destroy the Palestinian people from the start!

to get arrested while protesting for their cause. I agree with them in protesting war and protesting Israel. I was hoping for evidence of brutal Israeli treatment. what does "French journalist and Codepink member" mean anyway? it sounded like she was a "journalist" who acted like a protestor and therefore got treated like a protestor.

Arabs shout, "Wipe Israel off the face of
the earth," so I give credit for Israel
for protecting themselves from an Arab
attempt to start another holocaust -- and
collateral damage will always happen when
people hate each other and act accordingly.
