Slam Bill O'Reilly for His Jihad Against Dr. George Tiller

By Isaac Fitzgerald, AlterNet. Posted June 2, 2009.

O'Reilly's horribly offensive rhetoric helped feed the hate that led to this act of domestic terrorism.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

Dr. George Tiller, one of the few OB-GYNs in the country who performed late-term abortions despite threats to his safety, was brutally slain on Sunday in an act of domestic terrorism. Suspect Scott Roeder has been detained for questioning, but while Roeder may have pulled the trigger, another participant in Tiller's tragic death is still at large: Bill O'Reilly.

Gabriel Winant of Salon writes about O'Reilly:

... there's no other person who bears as much responsibility for the characterization of Tiller as a savage on the loose, killing babies willy-nilly thanks to the collusion of would-be sophisticated cultural elites, a bought-and-paid-for governor and scofflaw secular journalists. Tiller's name first appeared on The Factor on Feb. 25, 2005. Since then, O'Reilly and his guest hosts have brought up the doctor on 28 more episodes, including as recently as April 27. Almost invariably, Tiller is described as "Tiller the Baby Killer."

Watch a video roundup of O'Reilly's jihad on Tiller.

“Tiller the Baby Killer." That's how time and time again on national television O'Reilly referred to Tiller -- a man who worked within the confines of the law and was a legal medical practitioner. O'Reilly's rhetoric helped feed the hate that led to Tiller's killing, and we believe that O'Reilly must take responsibility for his abhorred actions. That is why we urge you to join CREDO in telling O'Reilly that he should “take responsibility for creating an atmosphere in which the assassination of Dr. George Tiller comes as no surprise. And ask him to pledge to stop spreading the hateful rhetoric that encourages violence against doctors who provide reproductive health care for women.” Click here to learn more about how you can help.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Dr. Tiller in this time of sadness. Here are the rest of our take-action campaigns for this week:

II -- Tell Congress to Stop Being Scared and Close Gitmo

As one of his first acts in office, President Barack Obama announced he will close Guantanamo Bay by January 2010.

But he needs Congress to move forward, and they're caving in the face of recent right-wing attacks. We need to step up and show our support for Obama's decision to close Guantanamo. Join MoveOn.org and tell Congress "Guantanamo Bay is a constant reminder of the Bush-era abuses of our laws" and must be shut down.

III -- Stand Up Against the Right-Wing Attacks on Sotomayor

Sonia Sotomayor is an accomplished scholar, celebrated judge and devoted public servant. But despite her impressive credentials, right-wing critics have responded to her historic nomination with thinly veiled sexist and racist attacks. Please join Presente.org in standing with Sotomayor and urging the Senate Judiciary Committee to give her a swift confirmation.

IV -- We Must Be Fearless in Our Response to Prop. 8 Ruling

The California Supreme Court has announced its deeply disappointing decision to uphold Proposition 8. We don't have time to mourn the failure of the state court to restore marriage equality to California. It's time to go on offense. To be fearless in our fight for equality. Will you join the Courage Campaign and stand up for what you know is right?

V -- Stop Schwarzenegger's Home Care Cuts in California

Home care workers across California face pay cuts of up to 33 percent -- from $12.10 an hour to $8.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's belief that solving the state's fiscal problems on the backs of those who take care of the most fragile among us is an absolute disgrace. Stand with SEIU and write a message to Schwarzenegger telling him you strongly disagree with his misguided priorities.

VI -- Take Action to Prevent Child Marriage

Sixty million girls around the world are married before the age of 17 -- many to men twice their age or older. They need our help.

O'Reilly is in show business. In show business. "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

I'm not so sure this is a good idea.

What about the hate speech from the left?

I. Could the muslim that killed the army recruiter have been motivated by all of the hate speech from the left? After all, you say genocide and child killer enough times…

III. Somewhat like Sotomayor, I believe my life experience as a white man leads me to make better decisions then women and minorities.

IV. I support marriage equality be seeking to end marriage, and all of the legal benefits that go with it, as a legal institution.

V. No. In a free market, it is impossible to be underpaid. If we valued their work, we would pay them more than 8 per hour. We don’t. They are unskilled work.

VI. Every time I attack the people who are muslims and latino catholics, the main perpetrators of child marriage, I am called a racist.

VIII. Alternet does not like the fact that Starbucks is anti union but they support illegal aliens – the ultimate tool of wage depression and union busting.

Keith Olbermann really slammed old Bill last night. If you didn't see it, try to find it on You Tube - or maybe the good folks at AlterNet can post it. It really is must see TV.

Keith's suggestion is to boycott FOX Noise. Not by advertising boycotts - they never work - but by boycotting business (bars, restaurants, etc.) where FOX is publicly shown.

It's not a bad idea, if you think about it.

Before I criticize I will be clear. I couldn't dislike Bill O'Reilly or Fox news more than I already do. I am also very Pro-Choice.

But really Isaac using this disingenuous crap "...Tiller -- a man who worked within the confines of the law and was a legal medical practitioner." does a serious disservice to the Pro-choice movement and progressives in general. This is the same reasoning and logic used to support Segregation, slavery and sufferage. It's also the same reasoning and argument put forward by O'Reilly and others to support their twisted beliefs.

Let's just substitute a few other common "within the law isms" for your words.

"Segregationists - who worked within the 1960's confines of the law and were not perpetrating any criminal acts..."

California voters - working within the confines of California's constitution, and upheld by it's Supreme Court, discriminate against gays who wish to be married but have commited no criminal offence...."

"Anti women voting advocates - who worked within the 1920's confines of the law - and were not perpetrating any crimnal acts...."

Using that legal argument only holds water if you are a strict legal beagle person like John Yoo or Alberto Gonzales. Legal is not MORAL. And this whole argument is a moral question like the segregation of the blacks.

Please treat this as an adult conversation and talk about it as an adult. Just because it is legal does not make it right or Morally acceptable.

Now do me and other pro-choice supporters a favor and make an Adult argument about this bull crap instead of the same excuses slave owners used to support their ownership of Afican-American's. Try using a morallity or doing the right thing argument rather than a Slavery is legal argument.

Abortion/Crime Rate/Drugs

Observe the study that suggested the legalization of abortion thirty years ago has contributed substantially to the current decrease in the crime rate. [Wikipedia: Legalized abortion and crime effect]

Certainly the decline in unwanted pregnancies where poverty is the deciding factor has had two "seminal" effects.

One is in the actual numbers decrease and the other is reduced population pressure within a family, so that what little is available need not be spread quite so far, making it possible for an overall economic improvement within these marginal families.

Another factor, less heartily endorsed, is the depredation caused by "street drugs", which tends to get the foolish and inept off the streets at an early age, and therefore to reduce the petty crime that might otherwise provide a "livelihood" for the marginalized and impoverished youth.

Silence the Hateful

These people, most of them broadcasters on Faux News, are talking hatred on Public Airwaves. Airwaves held in trust for us by the FCC.

It is the duty of the FCC to investigate and control the speakers of hatred. We know that they are the true murderers. Silence the real murderers!

Just as the hateful homo haters of the Christian wackos are one hundred percent responsible for the death of Mathew Sheppard and other murdered gays. How do you like the fact that Dan White, the murderer of Harvey Milk was out of prison with in five years. So the Justice system is corrupt, too. Well, we knew that, just reading some of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's opinions.

Do not allow OReilly to squirm out of this one. Get him off the air! Now!

If BillO was preaching from a Mosque instead of from his pulpit at FOX 'news'- He'd have been the lastest Detainee in Gitmo. In fact So would many Pro-life leaders and their 'Evangleical' snake oil Dealers.
Lets be honest they only get away with this Terrorist Rhetoric BECAUSE they are White Americans.Lets also be Clear- it was not only Tiller he was indicting as 'murder'- he was accusing ALL Women. Insinuating that All Women have this secret desire to get pregnant and then 'Kill' their babies. Who was he accusing more- Tiller or Women with 'So if you want to kill your baby, just pay him $5,000'. He was calling Tiller a murderer, but stating all Women are murderous. BillO Revealed is disgust of Women more than his disdain for Dr. Tiller.
So Will we also see some inocent woman seeking inexpensive birthcontrol murdered outside these health clinics now? Because if, Us Blood Thirsty murderous, women did not seek out these procedures to begin with, these Docs would go out of business. Be Aware of Who BillO is Really Targeting with his hate speech.
These Groups are not just terrorizing Docs, they are terrorizing Women - just like the Taliban. Will they soon resort to throwing Acid on Women who dare exercise their rights?
Look in the mirror Holely Rollers your methods and doctrines are no different than those others who prescribe to the Edict 'Guns and God' in the Middle East.

I made a point to listen to all of his comments on Tiller.

At no point, did the douchebag ever suggest that Tiller be killed. He did, continuously, criticize Tiller, and repetitiously use the term "Tiller the baby killer".

But at no point did he call for violence against Tiller, and THAT is the line between free speech and hate speech.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see him off the air (I'm more pro-choice than most of YOU). And I want the guy who killed Tiller to be sent to prison. But Oreilly didn't kill Tiller, nor did he ask anyone else to kill Tiller. He isn't a murderer, or an accessory to murder. He's just an asshole.

Our free speech is more important than that douchebag's ranting, and is even more important than Tiller's life.

You won't be able to recognize it... We are completely controlled by corporate interests, they have Obama ideologically in their pocket so they are free to dismantle everything of value and move it to countries where workers have no rights... all funded by the U.S. government... ie US! Workers here will scrabble over each other like vermin after a feast, seizing on and fighting over anything of value that is left... This will happen because we have NO BALLS! No one has the courage to just stop everything now while some of us still have some cards to play... shut the place down. Stop working, show the only power we have left ourselves, the right of the slave classes to refuse to work. Refuse until they meet our demands. Be prepared to withstand anything, including their sending the military against us,
their attempts to starve us out, to declare us all terrorists, to refuse us any aid. If we don't, everything you consider American will be history and we will have no one but our lazy ass, TV and computer, fast food addicted selves to blame.

FIRST: There is one problem with this whole story, and the comments above. What did Bill do wrong? Bill has the right to free speech and I will die for his right even if I disagree. I will also die for the rights of all above me to say what you are saying even if I disagree! Does anyone refute the right for Bill to make his statements? Then you refute the first admendment! The left wing media and right wing does it every day.
Second: Nothing in the O'rielly factor was misrepresented! The facts are clear and Bill has only responded to those facts. Many in America consider the death of 60,000 children genocide! They have the right to that opinion and to state it. This article above is a blatent attack on Bill's first ammendment Rights, Whats next? Who's next? Think about it!

Late-term abortion rights are more complicated.

I find it difficult to accept a pro-choicer's support of late-term abortion. Even though I consider myself to be pro-choice, a late-term abortion is murder of a viable human being. If a woman does not want a baby, why does she wait so long to do anything about it? There is no excuse for the delay! If the mother's life is in danger, why not deliver the baby early? However, isn't a late-term abortion just as detrimental to the health of the mother as a birth? I have read of nurses who leave their employment by late-term abortion doctors, as they have seen cases of so-called aborted babies who were still breathing after the procedure or where organs were collected from these aborted babies for who knows what reasons!

Bush/Cheney lied us into a war that killed a lot more than 9/11.

Bush showed them. He taught them to mess with the US, course I wouldn't want the parent of a dead soldier to read this as they might think the cost of invading Iraq was a bit high, for a lie.

Bill O'Reilly is not a Muslim, and he doesn't engage in jihad, an Arabic word which relates to the spiritual striving that Muslims engage in. A more proper word for the very Christian Mr. O'Reilly is "crusader", which relates him to the thieves, murderers and land grabbers sent out from Europe in the middle ages to torment the Muslims and Jews of the Middle East. Another word that might be appropriate is "terrorist." Why are there no demands being made to the Justice Department to start prosecuting the members and promoters of the terrorist movement that led to the assassination of Dr. Tiller?

... is self evident from this hate inspired murder!

why do the federals pretend we're a free people and say they're protecting constitutional rights when they've been usurping all powers since 1968 under the guise of national security...
How bloated does the Federal bureaucracy need to get before we figure out the simple fact that they're only serving themselves?
Just follow the money... corporate money too and you'll see just how much has been lost in the past 50 years!

The Democrats won`t protect our values...
the lobby interests are to well funded to allow them any freedom of action.
The Republicans started this so they won't or can't either...
besides the fact that they were installed by their corporate crony friends.

The US is reaping what it sowed and the freedom meter cant fall any further!
Its funny that some rights can be devalued due to national security but anti-hate laws will never see the light of day because... what again?

Thankfully, I don't have cable so I never have to turn offf O'Really and his ilk.
Just must mention the Army-McCarthy hearings. The year was 1954, when I was a high school junior. I wrote an essay on the hearings and earned an A. The English teacher's name was Fr. McCarthy, SJ, no relation to the nefarious Senator!

I saw a photograph of Partial Birth. A perfectly formed 8 month old child hanging halfway out of the woman with its skull crushed with large forceps designed to drag the baby through the birth passage.

9 years in the military and I have never seen such a nightmarish image that sent me into despair.

Ladies .. your equality its all on plain view of what this procedure really is. Someone has been hard at work making this nightmare nastiness acceptable.

Hordes of Femminazi Harpies talking about rights and with the same range of circular arguments that the Israeli,s are using to kill Palestinian babies.

The argument is pro choice but the women that undergo this procedure are not told of the high rate of psychological damage inflicted on the woman when the baby is killed.

I know of no other specie that willfully kill their young, and then these pitiful women are told its their choice?

The fertility clinics are doing great business all these desperate women trying to conceive .. then right alongside the abortion business .. women s studies units are churning out paper after paper which in many cases turn out to be faux.

Legal is not a word that means morally and ethically correct .. Legal is whatever .. and we have been nicely anesthetized as the nastiness is swept under the medical carpet.

Women today have a greater choice of birth control methods than at any time in their history. I can only draw the conclusion that the half born 8 month old with the crushed skull is the Femminazi equivalent of a Condom.
