Israel Lobby Is in a Public Opinion Pickle: Jewish Voters Went for Obama Big Time, and He's No Neocon

By Robert Dreyfuss, TheNation.com. Posted May 19, 2009.

If Obama decides to get tough with Israel over the Palestinians, he'll have the support of his base, and much opposition from conservatives.

While Prime Minister Netanyahu was meeting President Obama at the White House Monday morning, the Zogbys -- John Zogby, president/CEO of Zogby International, a polling firm, and Jim Zogby, his brother, president of the Arab American Institute -- were a few blocks away at the New America Foundation to discuss the surprising results of an interactive poll about US attitudes toward the conflict in the Middle East.

The results suggest that Obama would have strong support for a hands-on US diplomatic effort to forge an Israel-Palestine deal, even if it means pressure on Israel.

According to the poll, when asked if the United States should "get tough" with Israel in order to back up its call for an end to settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, fully 50 percent of Americans said yes, with just 19 percent saying "do nothing," and 32 percent not sure.

Even though Americans have a high opinion of Israel (by a 71-21 margin) and a low opinion of the Palestinians (by a 25-66 margin) in terms of favorability, overall -- not just in regard to settlements -- Americans say that it's "time for the United States to get tough with Israel" by a surprising 45-44 margin.

Hiding in those numbers, however, is an overwhelming partisan gap, and that is the really striking thing about the Zogby poll. From my notes:

Asked whether the interests of Israel and the US are identical, only 28 percent of Obama voters agreed, while 59 percent disagreed. Among McCain voters, it was the reverse: 78 percent of McCain voters said US and Israel interests were identical and 15 percent said they are not.

Asked about Netanyahu, the favorability rating for Obama voters was 29-49 percent, while the rating for McCain voters was a lopsided 82-9 percent.

And on the crucial question, is it time to get tough with Israel, the gap was a veritable Grand Canyon. Among Obama voters, 71 percent agreed and 18 percent disagreed. Among McCain voters, 16 percent agreed and 73 percent disagreed.

Similar divides showed up on virtually every question asked.

What does it mean? It says that President Obama will have the support of his base, including Democrats and Independents, if he decides to force the issue in coming months with the Israeli leader. According to John Zogby, part of the reason is demographic: black voters, Hispanic voters, and young (18-30) voters are far less attached to the US-Israeli special relationship than are older, more traditional voters, especially among Christian evangelicals.

Obama, being the cautious soul that he is, isn't likely to force a showdown, at least not anytime soon. But his meeting with Netanyahu today showed clearly that he isn't backing down to Netanyahu's bluster and fear-mongering over Iran.

It also shows that the vaunted Israel lobby is in a pickle. American Jews voted overwhelmingly for Obama, with 76 percent of US Jews voting Democratic in 2008. "American Jews are mostly in the peace camp," says John Zogby. That means the opposition to Obama will come first and foremost from the ultra-right wing of the Israel lobby, such as the allies of Likud, the Zionist Organization of America, and hard-line neoconservatives, along with their allies on the Christian right and among the Republican Party's right, including most of its congressional wing.

But middle-of-the-road, moderate, and especially liberal Jews are likely to back Obama. That's a dynamic that can isolate AIPAC, the central player in the Israel lobby. If it plays its cards wrong, AIPAC might find itself cut off from its base among pro-Israeli American Jews. So far, AIPAC -- and Netanyahu -- are hoping that they can stall Obama's Middle East peace plan until something, anything, erupts to derail it. But I think Obama is determined to press ahead.

Polls show :

~ Americans by a large majority want banks to PAY for their mistakes... his base overwhelming so ...

~ Americans by a large majority favor a Medicare "single payer" type health care plan... his base overwhelmingly so ...

~ Americans by a majority want investigations of the wrong doings of the Bush Administration ... his base overwhelmingly so.

And Obama has betrayed the American people and His Base" each and every time ... I'll be very surprised if Obama doesn't betray us with Israel as well ...

You can't be a Progressive and Pro-Obama ...

The Israel lobby is safe. Obama won't expose the truth of 9/11.

That is the big Kuhuna.........9/11. As long as 9/11 stands as it is, Israel benefits, as Olmert told us ("9/11 was good for Israel").

And the press, including Alternet, has joined Obama in never presenting any evidence, overwhelming evidence that we have, that 9/11 was an inside job. It is clear from what we do have that Israel, and the Mossad, were part of the planning and coverup. The details are hard to come by. But regardless, Israel continues to benefit from the war on terror, the consequence of 9/11.

We don't have to fear for the Israel lobby. As long as Alternet and the rest of the media and Obama keep the door shut on the truth of 9/11, they are quite safe.

a stolen election in 2000 has leeched into the much of the general voter tabulation process.

These 'too close to call' be it Franken/Coleman, Tedisco/Murphy "elections" are not anomalies, they're tweaks to the illusion that an Electoral College and a political party and a vote still matter?

America was mortally wounded on 9/11 and placed on a MSM/PBS/NPR/hollwood life support system of Lies.

First, do you really believe there is any desire for peace in the Middle East? That would involve Israel giving up the land they have stolen. That would mean they would have to recognize the Palestinians, if they want them to recognize them as a legitimate country. Does anybody really swallow the idea of Iran being an existential threat to a fully nuclear armed Israel? Obama is a good AIPAC mensch. He will go along with the gag.

...when Bill Clinton was president, wasn't Netanyahu considered a war criminal not fit to set foot in this country? It would be blatant hypocrisy for Obama to treat him as such. This is the Bush/Obama legacy.

Who cares what Conservatives Want

Obama stillhasn't realilzed that conservatives lost the last election and that they're going to keep on losing. The question is whether he's one of them. By his actions so far, he is. We need a Progressive Party to replace both the Democratic and Republican parties. Let them roll into the single party they are and let's get some good government going.

Polls Schmolls!

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Citing polls which reveal that a strong majority of jews support a tough stance on the Israeli/Palestinian issue is about as meaningful as a fart in a gale. It is not the individual jews that matter, it is the powerful jewish lobbies, mainly AIPAC. AIPAC is the loudest voice, AIPAC is where the money is, AIPAC is the organization that regularly gets the majority of Congress critters to attend its annual meetings and fawn over its agenda, AIPAC is the force our politicians have to contend with and they are the ones who set the course of our foreign policy. That's the reality and it's been shown over and over again. Read Professors Walt and Mearshimer's book on "The Israel Lobby" for further clarification, if needed. Of course, Opinionator would call the professors "self-hating jews", yet another category for anyone who disagrees with his views while inconveniently being jewish.

Individual jews mean exactly nothing; the same as individual "regular" Americans, no matter what numbers or percentages you cite. Large percentages of Americans regularly oppose what their government is doing and their opposition amounts to the same fart in a gale. Those in power get to decide and its NOT the people. Down with all Lobbies!

Philip Weiss: Bibi greets Obama with new settlements

Israel has begun constructing a new settlement in the northern West Bank for the first time in 26 years, Army Radio reported.

The move comes on the eve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's first meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, despite Western calls for Israel to halt its settlement activity.

GOP in Fantasyland

The substance of this article just illustrates how truly out of synch the GOP and its ultra right wing base are with the rest of the country and the world. These neocons are still hoping for the rapture and will support any sociopath who can hurry it along and unfortunately they supported Bush with the terrible results we all have to live with today. Now with the majority of sane voters finally coming to the fore we have a president who wishes to end this travesty in the Middle East and is up to the challenge. All of us who love America must do everything we can to support the president and to prevent the psychotic right wing from continuing their damage to the country and the world.

Whatever happened to JUSTICE?!?!?!?
Posted by: Spiritgirl on May 19, 2009 10:39 AM

Justice! Does anyone even understand what that means anymore? The treatment of the Palestinians is appalling, and should be considered genocide! Maybe it is time for the US to put divestment on the table. Maybe then, the Israeli's will come to the negotiating table willing to really be a partner! Until the US is willing to stop being a bully to the neighbors of Israel, only then will the US be secure! For those that are waiting on the coming of the Rapture, and justify what Israel does by that yardstick, maybe you should go back to your bibles and really read what you think is there!

The Real Test
Posted by: login@bugmenot.com on May 19, 2009 3:21 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The real test will come when Obama realizes the only way to stop settlement expansion and new settlement construction is by first threatening to cut aid to Israel and then eventually cutting aid, both military and civilian.

The last time a US president tried to do just that, was back in 1991. Then, President George H. Bush decided to put a freeze on loans to Israel in hopes it will stop settlement expansion and confiscation of Palestinian land.

Within three days of his announcement, Bush reversed his decision and reinstituted the loan to Israel (A loan which was never paid back, I might add). WHY? You ask.

Pressure came from various sources, the least of which was the US Congress, where Senator Chuck Schumer rallied Congress members by decrying that cutting aid to Israel would endanger its security and put the state's fate in peril. Pro-Israel demonstrators took to the streets of NY, albeit in small numbers.

The firestorm resulted in Bush buckling under pressure.

Clinton, not only remained passive in regard to settlements, but upped the military aid to Israel.

Unfortunately, one of the first things Obama did as president was to sign a 30 Billion aid package to Israel.

Most Israelis want a deal with the Palestinians, and peace

Bravo. Israel has no alternative to getting out of the West Bank and the Golan Heights, unless it wants war or near-war for generations to come. "Protecting" Israel is injuring the national interests of the US, and hurting the true best interests of Israel itself. Obama needs to tell Netanyahu the Arab peace plan is the only way forward, provided it is revised to restrict the right of return to Israel proper.

ROBERT DREYFUSS: DON'T WASTE YOUR ENERGIES ON OBAMA, HE HATES HIS VOTERS !!

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Dear Robert Dreyfuss: Good article, however i am so sorry my friend for telling you and telling all American socialist thinkers and socialists, to stop wasting their precious emotional, mental and physical energies on Obama and The Democrats. The Democratic Party and Obama hates us, just like The Republican Party hates their own voters. The majority of US citizens have no government representation, we are on our own in this country. We voted for a democracy in 2008, and what we got was more capitalist-fascism from Obama, and more murder.

Obama is a zionist-jew, his mother was a jew and he is distant cousin of Dick Cheney.

What we need in USA is a United Socialist Party composed of small socialist parties, not the capitalist Democrats and capialist Republicans and not the other capitalist alternatives like Ron Paul and Bob Barr.

The Facts:
Posted by: yellow on May 23, 2009 1:34 PM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Israel will NOT drag the US into war with Iran.

US aid to Israel is around $2 billion annually according to the US State Department's Congressional Budget Justification Report for Foreign Operations. About 25% of this is economic aid which is decreasing every year. The rest is military aid, most of which returns to the US by law and is spent in the US economy. Thus, at least 75% of US aid to Israel is a stimulus to the US economy. In addition, US Arab allies like Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia receive similar levels of aid, especially considering the size of their economies and militaries. The real cornerstone of US/Israeli relations is not aid but trade and direct investment!!

On this point, Israel' annual trade volumn is about $55 billion, or roughly a quarter of its $205 billion GDP. Of this amount $21 billion-or 40%-is accounted for by the US. Roughly half of this trade is in cut diamonds. Most of the rest is in high tech industries 80% of which is controlled by Israeli subsidiaries of US transnational firms.

AIPAC's annual budget has averaged about $60 million over the last few years. Consider that according to the Center for Responsive Politics, about $3.27 billion was spent lobbying the US Congress by at least 15,276 different lobbyist groups throughout 2008. This kinda makes AIPAC appear small. It also would imply that many of these various lobbyists were corporate interests who wanted access to Israeli markets for their wares. These might include Caterpillar, Terex, Intel, Motorola, United Technologies, GE, ITT and CitiGroup. The list goes on. As the US market shrinks in the current depression, transnational capital will seek growing markets abroad that are defying depressed domestic and international trends; this usually means perpetuating trade between US corporations and Israel as well as other human rights violators.

The problem with US relations with Israel is moral and based on human rights. America disregards human rights because it is easy and because it is profitable. This has nothing to do with the Jews. It has to much do with US capitalism and the general history of US diplomacy's disregard for the human rights records of its trade partners and allies.

US Jews will back Obama in his efforts to achieve a two-state solution. Since most American Jews don't back the Likud than it is bigoted to blame them for the lack of peace between the Israel and the Palestinians. Most Jews support Obama over Netanyahu's rejectionism. I personally have faith in Obama's ability to make progress with peace. The Israelis called a unilateral ceasefire just before Obama's Inauguration in January 2009. The IDF redeployed their troops from Gaza. At this point over 1,300 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed and over 4,000 homes destroyed.

Given the need for peace, J-Street, a new centrist Jewish Organization in Washington DC acting as a counter-wieght to AIPAC, has recently polled American Jews finding that 69% of US Jews support strong pressure on Israel to make peace up from 66% before Obama's election. Furthermore, fully 76% support a two-state solution and 69% rejected Avigdor Lieberman's proposal to have Israeli Arabs sign loyalty oaths as racist. About three-fifths believed that the recent IDF into Gaza made Israel less secure or had no impact on Israel's security. Not at all bad for a centrist group. The real shocker was that 69% believed in pursuing a peace agreement with a unified Hmams/Fatah PA despite the global rejection of Hamas as a terrorist organization. On settlement expansion, most oppose.

More than three quarters of US Jews approve of the job Obama is doing as President. Roughly 8 out of 10 Jewish voters supported Obama for President. According to the UK's Daily Telegraph, America's liberal Jewish Community had been drowned out by a small group of rightists.
