Once You See What Truly Happened in Gaza, It Will Change You Forever

When I traveled to Gaza last week, everywhere I went, a photo haunted me. I saw it in a brochure called "Gaza will not die" that Hamas gives out to visitors at the border crossing. A poster-sized version was posted outside a makeshift memorial at the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. And now that I am back home, the image comes to me when I look at children playing in the park, when I glance at the school across the street, when I go to sleep at night.
It is a photo of a young Palestinian girl who is literally buried alive in the rubble from a bomb blast, with just her head protruding from the ruins. Her eyes are closed, her mouth partially open, as if she were in a deep sleep. Dried blood covers her lips, her cheeks, her hair. Someone with a glove is reaching down to touch her forehead, showing one final gesture of kindness in the midst of such inhumanity.
What was this little girl's name, I wonder. How old was she? Was she sleeping when the bomb hit her home? Did she die a quick death or a slow, agonizing one? Where are her parents, her siblings? How are they faring?
Of the 1,330 Palestinians killed by the Israeli military during the 22-day invasion of Gaza, 437 were children. Let me repeat that: 437 children -- each as beautiful and precious as our own.
As a Jew, an American and a mother, I felt compelled to witness, firsthand, what my people and my taxdollars had done during this invasion. Visiting Gaza filled me with unbearable sadness. Unlike the primitive weapons of Hamas, the Israelis had so many sophisticated ways to murder, maim and destroy-unmanned drones, F-16s dropping "smart bombs" that miss, Apache helicopters launching missiles, tanks firing from the ground, ships shelling Gaza from the sea. So many horrific weapons stamped with Made in the USA. While Hamas' attacks on Israeli villages are deplorable, Israel's disproportionate response is unconscionable, with 1,330 Palestinians dead vs. 13 Israelis.
If the invasion was designed to destroy Hamas, it failed miserably. Not only is Hamas still in control, but it retains much popular support. If the invasion was designed as a form of collective punishment, it succeeded, leaving behind a trail of grieving mothers, angry fathers and traumatized children.
To get a sense of the devastation, check out a slide show circulating on the internet called Gaza: Massacre of Children (www.aztlan.net/gaza/gaza_
Anyone who can view the slides and still repeat the mantra that "Israel has the right to self-defense" or "Hamas brought this upon its own people," or worse yet, "the Israeli military didn't go far enough," does a horrible disservice not only to the Palestinian people, but to humanity.
Compassion, the greatest virtue in all major religions, is the basic human emotion prompted by the suffering of others, and it triggers a desire to alleviate that suffering. True compassion is not circumscribed by one's faith or the nationality of those suffering. It crosses borders; it speaks a universal language; it shares a common spirituality. Those who have suffered themselves, such as Holocaust victims, are supposed to have the deepest well of compassion.
The Israeli election was in full swing while was I visiting Gaza. As I looked out on the ruins of schools, playgrounds, homes, mosques and clinics, I recalled the words of Benjamin Netanyahu, "No matter how strong the blows that Hamas received from Israel, it's not enough." As I talked to distraught mothers whose children were on life support in a bombed hospital, I thought of the "moderate" woman in the race, Tzipi Livni, who vowed that she would not negotiate with Hamas, insisted that "terror must be fought with force and lots of force" and warned that "if by ending the operation we have yet to achieve deterrence, we will continue until they get the message."

There have been many regimes/governments throughout history that have sought to "hit back" 10, 100, 1000 times harder towards those they've been in conflict with. Ironically, one 20th century example is Nazi Germany.
Hey, and some people are too heartless to die.

So is it just me wondering if there isn't enough evil to fit the agenda?
If there isn't enough evil, then it must be created by killing people to force their family members into action (ie: new evil) ?
Revenge is the highest quality evil that can exist, right? So, if revenge is sought, then it must be called terrorism.. ?
just thinking and typing.. pardon me.

Those with no sympathy for the arab cause should remember the Israeli state was founded as a result of 3 terrorist / freedom fighter groups against the British (Stern Gang, Irgun and Hagganah), and two of their leaders (Shamir and Begun if memory serves) became head of state. Who says terrorism does not pay?
And think of the American outcry if the British behaved in Northern (and Southern) Ireland as the Israelis have in Gaza and the Lebanon. Such actions would make "Bloody Sunday" look like a tea party. Why are some allowed to get away with it and not others?

against abortion, how about hearing from them regarding the killing of 437
children. I don't mean a blanket 2 sentence statement but some real outcry of what the
H is going on here.
I do not expect much from either group on this issue as when you become fixed almost
entirely on one issue: i.e.: abortion all else is diminished.

"We have found strong indications of violations of the laws of war and possible war crimes committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip. We are particularly concerned that most of the weapons that were found used in the December 27 assault on Gaza are US-made and supplied. We believe that Israel's use of these weapons may constitute a violation of US law, and particularly the Foreign Assistance Act and the US Arms Export Control Act.
A report of our initial findings will be compiled and submitted to, among others, members of the United States Congress. We intend to push for an investigation by the United States government into possible violations by Israel of US law. We also hope to contribute our finding and efforts to other efforts by local and international lawyers to push for accountability against those found responsible for the egregious crimes that we have documented."
Does it matter though?

I am tired of the Israeli's whining about their security, when the draconian measures they use are part of the problem! Their stiff-necked unwillingness to really attempt a peaceful solution is another part of the problem! I am tired and angry that my country (America) has not been an honest broker, but instead stood by like the older but stupid big brother - while the little tyrant terrorizes the neighborhood and yet insists that the neighbors won't play nice! I am tired of my tax $$ going to Israel - and this is what happens! No more funding, enough, divest now! Until the Israeli's are willing to come to the table with honest and open negotiations - they need no more of my tax money!

The DLC under Emanuel would not support a candidate who was not committed to Israel.
A movement to have Emanuel dropped as Obama's chief of staff would have much more effect if it came from the Jewish sector.

Your voice as a jewish person is so important, and your compassion so wonderful- compassion is the only way out. ( I would love to come with you, but funds are lacking... ) 'Peace with Justice' is the slogan of the great Father Gerard Jean-Juste in Haiti. That Justice is what we have to pay attention to. And it comes from compassionate action.
We must send "NEVER AGAIN!" posters to all news media, BBC, CBC included!, to remind them of the true meaning. Until AIPAC, JDL etc., and their pressure is exposed, and truthful reporting of Israel's actions begins, the world will be caving to the presumed moral standing of the 'ETERNAL VICTIM'- AIPAC's and the Zionists' powertool, and long since abused.
Yes,"NEVER AGAIN!" means NOW and EVERYWHERE - even in Gaza and the West Bank.
It is time to call our leaders to the carpet of reality: Israel will not be served by lies, genocide and terrorism, and Palestinians' human rights are tied to Israelis'.
As long as Israelis are deceived by Zionist war monger leaders, and Peace -'threats' are repulsed by lies, slaughter and theft, there is no progress.
Let's tell our leaders - Obama, Kerry, Clinton, Merckel, Harper, and the rest:
Expose the lies and propaganda, and act with compassion: Peace is waiting, and so are ALL THE VICTIMS OF TERRORISM!

1. Whether or not the writer is Jewish is unimportant. She is misguided and taken in no matter her religion. War is ugly. War is unwarranted. But, please let us be real. The terrible loss of life and devastation was brought to Gaza by Hamas. If the civilian population is so anxious for the destruction of Israel that Hamas is still popular with them, then they are very poor in their judgment. Jews will never ever again stand down and be slaughtered.
2. Rocket attacks by Hamas upon a civilian Israeli population is no way to promote peace. I see no outcry nor outrage by the usual suspects about the damage done to Israeli children. Israeli children whose school day is spent in a bomb shelter. Israeli children who suffer severe trauma and psychological damage resulting from constant rocket attack day after day, hour after hour. Where, usual suspects, is your outrage?
Have you read the Hamas covenant? I suggest that you do.
3. Israeli's suffer less casualties and deaths, thank god, because they protect their children. Israeli's make sure to protect their populace. They do not use women, children, etc. as human shields.
4. Hamas inflates the amount of casualty. Who verifies their figures? The UN has already retracted its assertion that Israeli's destroyed a UN hospital as it turned out untrue. There are many videos that show Hamas and "Palestinian" staged injuries and losses. Do not mistake what I am saying, of course, there is human loss and waste of human life--- but it is within the hands of Hamas and the residents of Gaza (who by the way were left a thriving economy, irrigation and buildings by the Jews who were uprooted by Israel from Gaza) to come to the peace table and negotiate a peace treaty. Where are they? Why do they not come? Is it easier to shoot off rockets from hospitals, schools, etc. That does wonders for the peace process.
6. Ms. Benjamin, I understand your sympathy. However, when you return on March 7-- why don't you tell Hamas that you want to live in Gaza with many of your Jewish friends? See the reaction. By the way, how many Jews live in Gaza? How many Jews now live in Egaypt? How many Jews now live in Iraq? How many in Libya? How many in Iran?
You can make a major contribution to peace if you can convince Hamas to negotiate so that Israel will have peace, safe and secure borders. If you can convince Hamas to do that, then see how fast the borders will open for them. Remember that they border Arab states who refuse terrorists like Hamas entry and/or access. But, you can make incredible progress for peace. Get Hamas to come to the table. Try it and let me know how you make out.

Not all Jews are Zionists, believing they are divinely apportioned any/all land in the region that was once deemed "The Holy Land."
Judaism isn't the problem. Zionism is and if you have no understanding of ZIONISM, google Theodor Herzl and follow the threads dangling from his prayer shaw.

The "settlers" requirements for land are promoted by the vested interests of politicians, business people, military personnel and religious authorities who are direct beneficiaries of the stolen land. As further new territories are required for land development, excuses for encroachment are notched up, the original inhabitants are demonised, and the invasion begins again. Israel is not defending its borders and its people, it is invading Palestine to establish new "settlements", massacring and maiming Palestinian men, women and children so that those with the most to gain from "settlements' businesses" can profit from Palestinian lives, loss of life and land. Whether those businesses are in synagogues, weapons sales or construction, they are reliant upon the invasion of Palestine, the devastation of the Palestinians' way of life, and the deadly injurious toll of Palestinian men, women and children.

I am especially thankful to benefit from the shared wisdom attributed to the commandments of Moses including: You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor, and You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor. Those are certainly great words for all to live by. And I wish and pray to all according to their faith in that, or according to their lack there of as the case may be.

Hamas is a terrorist organization. They hide among the civilians of Gaza knowing that the fighting will produce photos like the ones we've seen and thus propaganda victories like the one their obviously gaining from the obscene photos of the war they started. People ask the Israelis to negotiate as if this has never been tried. This is exactly what Israel spent the whole decade of the 1990s doing. What was the consequence? I happended to follow those negotiations both from Israel and in the US. I know that Hamas more than doubled its suicide bombings in the few months immediately following the signing of the September 1993 Declaration of Principles than in the entire 9 months prior to the signing in the early part of that year. This can only show a desire by Iran and its proxy Hamas to derail the peace accords so they can conduct a campaign to destroy Israel.
Perhaps Israel is taking the wrong approach. It is hard to know what to do since Hamas is so violent and intent on destroying Israel. Israel adhered to the ceasefire until Hamas tried to tunnel into Israel for the purpose of terrorism.
I'm all for returning to the peace table but peace is a two way street. All this could have been avoided. Absent Hamas suicide bombings all during the 1990s, there would have been an independant and secure Palestine today with all the territory returned and an accomidation on East Jerusalem. Hamas doesn't want this. Guess why.
Islamic fundamentalism has brought only poverty, violence and oppression to the people of the Middle East. They are beginning to see it for what it really is and to reject it. Let's hope the Gazan People reject Hamas before it is too late and insist on supporting Fatah and a return to the peace table. It would be a step in the right direction and an end to the bitter reality that we see in the graphic display on this thread.

Appeal by Gush Shalom
YOU can act against nightly intimidating of West Bank villages that maintain non-violent anti-wall protests!
In the Gush weekly you read about Bil'in. Just now we received the following material showing how Bil'in and other villages that protest against the robbing of their land are being intimidated.
PLEASE ACT NOW - SEND YOUR PROTEST, sample letter included + SEND COPIES TO THE NEAREST ISRAELI EMBASSY & to relevant addresses in your environment (personal, political & media)
[Hebrew attached / עברית מצורף ]
Nightly invasions to Palestinian villages in the West Bank
Imagine being awakened to the sound of a stun grenade. Imagine such a grenade landing in your front yard every night. This is the reality that residents of Palestinian villages who are struggling against the apartheid wall are forced to deal with since the attack on Gaza.
These nightly invasions by the army, which terrorize villagers, are becoming ever more frequent. Invasions take place three to four time a week in the villages of Beit Likia and Bil'in. In the last week, the villages of Ma'asara, Ni'ilin and Jayus too have joined the list, as troops have been harassing those who participate and organize the village protests.
During the invasions soldiers shoot tear gas and stun grenades into civilian's houses. They also use rubber coated bullets and live rounds. On 13.2.09, two children were injured in their homes in Beit Likia, and a 60 year old woman was hit in the stomach. On that same night, soldiers reached the homes of Ma'asara popular leaders Muhammad Barjia and Mahmoud Zoahara, kept them for hours outside their homes in the cold with very little cloths, and caused damage to their property, threatening to arrest the two if demonstrations in the area were to continue. A report by Zoahara is attached hereunder.
The media does not report these incidents, which have become a tiring routine of the reality of occupation. It seems that under this media blockade, army commanders feel free to carry out these crimes.
RAISE A VOICE AND STOP THEM!
A link to a video from Wednesday 18.2.09. The army invaded during the day to set a checkpoint and later at night, just to shoot some teargas and bullets.
Urge your politicians to demand from Israel to stop those night raids, which are done just to set terror on the people.
Write and call to Public Requests and Complaints in Ministry of Defense of Israel to protest against the nightly invasions.
Email: pniot@mod.gov.il
Phone: +972(0)3-6975540
+972(0)3-6975423
+972(0)3-6975349
FAX +972(0)3-6976711
Sample letter:
To Ministry of Defense
I write to you in order to protest against the nightly invasions of the villages of Bil'in, Beit Likia, Ni'ilin, Jayus and Ma'asara, committed by the Israeli army on an almost every-night basis. Such actions are in violation of international law, which hold the occupying army responsible to the welfare and safety of civilians living under its rule. You must stop these invasions at once, and prosecute whoever is responsible for them.
Sincerely,

Israel follows since decades the “Swing Policy”:
They put the Palestinians on the Swing by coming to the negotiation table. Before discussing though the other party must fulfil some pre-conditions. If these are met and Israel has no other choice they sit at the negotiation table. If it comes close to the critical point of an agreement they change the parameters, say “Ooops! you almost had it” and give the swing a push in the other direction.
They continue to “negotiate” and again reach the hated point of a maybe agreement. So they ad some more demands, say again “Ooops! you almost had it” and give the swing another push in the other direction … as we are just witnessing in Cairo. And so on and so forth.
While following persistently this “Swing Policy” they keep creating facts on the ground at a frantic and ever increasing pace until all of the occupied territory is full of settlements and there is nothing anymore to discuss about. Simply because there is no land anymore on which to build a Palestinian State.
Anyone can see this – nobody does anything about it – but everybody puts the blame … on the Palestinians.
Damn those Hamas people, damn those Fatah people and the weasel Abu Mazen, damn those Arabs! Why don’t they want peace ….

How lucky am I
When babies are being slaughtered
In our adult wars
How lucky am I
When Children suffer
At our adult angers
How lucky am I
When the innocent ones lay helpless
In our adult world
How lucky am I
Not at all
I was once a child and now I am one of those adults
Who has forgotten the innocence and purity of the child
How lucky am I
When I sit in paradise without a worry
And all’s well in my world
How lucky am I?
Not at all!

A Brit

against abortion, how about hearing from them regarding the killing of 437

1. the Arabs articulate Israel's right to exist, and
2. the Arabs embrace the value of all life instead of training their citizens to be suicide bombers in the name of Allah. Allah and Adonai (all the same) is ashamed of the blood shed in his/her name.

Not at all!
