Israel's Leaders Are Frantically Trying to Prevent War Crimes Proceedings for Their Gaza Atrocities

By Jonathan Cook, AlterNet. Posted January 26, 2009.

Israeli officials are in a frenzy of activity to forestall legal actions abroad over their involvement in the recent Gaza offensive.

Mounting fear in Israel that the country's leaders face war crimes charges over their involvement in the recent Gaza offensive pushed officials into a frenzy of activity at the weekend to forestall legal actions abroad.

The urgency was underlined after rumors last week that Belgian authorities might arrest Tzipi Livni, Israel's foreign minister, if she attended a summit of European counterparts in Brussels on Wednesday. In an indication of how seriously the matter is judged, Ms Livni's advisers were on the verge of cancelling her trip when the story was revealed to be a hoax.

Nonetheless, officials are braced for real attempts to arrest senior political and military figures following a warning from the country's chief law officer, Menachem Mazuz, that Israel will soon face "a wave of international lawsuits".

In response, the government is setting up a special task force to work on legal defenses, has barred the media from naming or photographing army officers involved in the Gaza attack, and has placed restrictions on overseas visits. Today, ministers were expected to approve an aid package to help soldiers fight warrants abroad for their arrest.

The concern about war crimes trials follows a series of pronouncements by Richard Falk, the United Nations' special rapporteur on the occupied territories and a professor emeritus of international law at Princeton University in the United States.

He has accused Israel of gravely violating the laws of war during its three-week offensive, which killed more than 1,300 Gazans, most of them civilians, and wounded thousands more.

There is a well-grounded view that both the initial attacks on Gaza and the tactics being used by Israel are serious violations of the UN charter, the Geneva conventions, international law and international humanitarian law," he said during the final stages of fighting.

Since they gained entry to the tiny enclave after a ceasefire declared a week ago, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have added their voice. The two human-rights organizations have censured Israel over its failure to distinguish between Palestinian civilians and combatants as well as its use of controversial weapons.

There is incontrovertible evidence, both groups say, that Israel fired white phosphorus shells over Gaza, despite its banned use in civilian areas, setting homes on fire and burning civilians caught under the shower of phosphorus.

Kenneth Roth, the director of Human Rights Watch, has also lambasted Israel for using high-explosive shells in built-up areas of Gaza, even though the artillery has a blast range of up to 300 meters.

Initial indications suggest that the army may have resorted also to an experimental weapon -- dense inert metal explosive, or Dime -- that severs limbs and ruptures the internal organs of anyone close to the blast.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's nuclear watchdog, is investigating claims forwarded by Saudi Arabia that depleted uranium shells were used in Gaza.

In addition, human-rights groups have begun documenting instances of the Israeli army's targeting of civilian buildings, including UN schools, and of soldiers taking Palestinian civilians as human shields.

I've heard and read about these accusations of war crimes, especially against IDF troops -- the 'few bad apples' syndrome -- but not as explicitly vs. Israeli leaders. Thanks to Jonathan Cooke for pulling this all together. Hope he -- and Alternet -- will keep us posted on developments, which will certainly follow anon.

The standard defence of Israeli leaders has been, and will be again, anti-semitism. Just as Bush brought disgrace on the United States, so Israel's leaders bring disgrace on those who support them. The Jewish diaspora, who have contributed such an astonishing amount to European culture - science, mathematics, medicine, literature, music, humour - cannot surely be happy to see dead children laid out on the road. It is essential for the Jewish people and those of us who love them that their government is brought to its senses. It is essential that Jews, Arabs and every one of us learns again to live with their neighbour, for unless we do, we are neither Jew, Christian nor Muslim and are all doomed.

Israel In The Right - Learn The Facts

As I posted to a post I made elsewhere that I received many unwarranted negative comments, I want the truth to be known. Also, I am challenging anyone as shown below to even show one thing I am presenting is in error.

Many uninformed ones and/or ones that do NOT want to know the truth have:

[1] Been calling me names and making false accusations about me.

[2] Telling outright untruths about factual matters to favor those in the WRONG, the Gazans

[3] Have been telling me I do not know what I am speaking about - however, I know the subject of WRONGLY occupied land better for sure than any other poster.

[4] Most have failed to be objective and to call a 'spade a spade' and be honest.

Well I have just concluded an exhaustive study of occupied lands with major emphasis on Palestine along with a historical narrative covering about 3,500 years from 1,500 BCE to present and am presenting it in a clear honest and balanced way [[which I can do better than others as I am neither a Gazan, Zionist, Hebrew, Jew or anyone else with a stake in the outcome that blinds them to the truth. I am an Ishmaelite who pulls no punches with respect telling the truth]].

Now to read my analytic report,

Which can be found at,

Also, I am throwing out a challenge to one and all -- I defy anyone to show even one error in the facts, the reality per John 8:32, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (Authorized King James Bible; AV) I am presenting.

Anyone wishing more information and/or to discuss can PM me on the above forum.

The definition of Irony

Here's a nation of people that is made up of victims and survivors of an absolutely atrocious event and an ongoing target of unfounded hatred. Yet, now they find themselves in a position in which they could be guilty of atrocities and hatred. Does anyone else see the irony here?

Some of my favorite quotes about history:

Andre Trocme:

All who affirm the use of violence admit it is only a means to achieve justice and peace. But peace and justice are nonviolence...the final end of history. Those who abandon nonviolence have no sense of history. Rather they are bypassing history, freezing history, betraying history.

David C. McCullough:
History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are.

Etienne Gilson:
History is the only laboratory we have in which to test the consequences of thought.

George Santayana:
Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

George Wilhelm Hegel:
What experience and history teach is this -- that people and governments never have learned anything from history, or acted on principles.

Great piece! The Israeli military clearly would prefer to kill 100 Palestinian civilians, than have one of their soldiers injured. The most recent murderous Israeli rampage is intended to help keep the illegal colonies of fanatical Jewish settlers splattered all over the West Bank.

Peace, prosperity, open borders, billions in foreign aid.

All they have to do is lay down their arms, and Israel will let them be.

Otherwise they will be always led down the road to destruction by their Jihadists, and Mullahs.

Even after the Israelis withdrew this time, they have still continued to launch missiles.

Stupid....very stupid. They have learned nothing.

President Barack Obama has dispatched his new Middle East envoy, former Senate majority leader George J Mitchell, on the administration's first mission into the region.
The decision to appoint a presidential envoy, and to dispatch him so early in the administration, is a sign that Mr Obama intends to take a more active approach to the peace process than his predecessor.

In an interview with Al-Arabiya television, Mr Obama said he felt it important to "get engaged right away" in the Middle East.

He said he directed Mr Mitchell to talk to "all the major parties involved".

AND HERE'S THE BEAUTIFUL PART:
"What I told him is start by listening, because all too often the United States starts by dictating," Mr Obama said.

He also reiterated the US's commitment to Israel as an ally, and to its right to defend itself. But he suggested that Israel has hard choices to make.

"We cannot tell either the Israelis or the Palestinians what's best for them. They're going to have to make some decisions. But I do believe that the moment is ripe for both sides to realise that the path that they are on is one that is not going to result in prosperity and security for their people," Mr Obama said.

"Israel has a duty to protect to protect its citizens"
Since Hamas was elected in elections generally conceded to be fair, Israel has closed Gaza off from water, electricity, food and medical supplies. It has refused to turn over taxes collected in the name of the Palestinian Authority, so that the government is unable to pay its workers. Does the government in Gaza have a duty to protect its citizens?

13 Israeli's have been killed by unguided rockets. 10 were soldiers, 3 civilians.
1300 hundred Gazans have died so far by by weapons claimed to be highly accurate. A few of them were fighters. The Israelis targeted ambulances, hospitals, apartment buildings and a UN school in which civilians seeked refuge.
3 of the Israelis were killed by "friendly fire". All the more reason for Israel to fear Hamas, they force them to kill their own soldiers!

The Israeli vow to continue attacking Gaza until the rockets stop is a formula to justify killing every last Gazan. Every child killed, every action calculated to increase fear and hopelessness and desperation makes moderation less an option. It also serves to radicalize people around the world against Israel. Even in the US, where media coverage has been overwhelmingly pro Israel, the images coming back of bombed out apartments and the unmitigated savagery of the Israeli action is starting to wake people up

Sad, truly sad that mankind has not advanced further than what we have in these days and times.
Does not the scriptures admonish all to love our creator, Jehovah God with all our soul, strength and mite, and too love our neighbors as ourselves?
That being the case, and the Jews claim to be God's chosen, then would you not think they would be showing that love towards the peoples who's land they now occupy?
Please, someone, please tell me if the Talmud is used today as a teaching tool by the Hebrews.
I personally find it hard to think that it is, as the few Jews who I know are nothing like what that book, which teaches hate towards all Christians.
I have asked three different Rabbis for an explanation of that book, and as yet not received a response.
If there is anyone who can help to enlighten me in regards the Talmud, please, I really would like to know where it came from, and if it is used today as a teaching tool.
Regardless where were from, or nationally or race, we are all the same, wanting the same things out of life, that is why it puzzles me why were still fighting against each other.
What is the root cause for all the blood shed and heart ache?
Is it time for the meek to stand and be strong, to say were not going to be bullied any longer by the greedy who's only desire is to want more and more, who take at will with no or little regard of who it hurts along the way.
Could it be that there really is an evil invisible force at work as the scriptures say?
The battle between good and evil, now being played out in it's final chapter, or if you prefer, the last day's!
We, as a human race have had more than ample time to figure things out, too learn the lessons of life, we are now being given our final test to see who passes and who fails.
There are only two roads to chose from, the one leading to honor our creator, and the other to live a life of worldly pleasures.
We have been given a free will to chose either, and a tempter who throws temptations in our path as we journey through this thing called life.
Remember were it says in the scriptures that broad and spacious is the road leading to destruction, and narrow the road that leads to ever lasting life, and few there will be on it, where many will be on the other!
I personally take that to mean that it won't be easy, but then nothing worthwhile ever is.
May peace be found in your heart.

The way they are doing business is more like what terrorts do then a civilized nation.

Sir Gerald Kaufman quoted, on Gaza invasion
Posted by: Gawain on Jan 28, 2009 12:08 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Prosecuting for war crimes is a worthy pursuit, but unless the economic system is altered, the means and the opportunities will just keep arising, on an industrial scale. Note the request, in the abridged speech below
"to impose a total arms ban on Israel".

Israel, for a start.

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/ ... /90115-0013.htm

Sir Gerald Kaufman (Manchester, Gorton) (Lab): I was brought up as an orthodox Jew and a Zionist. On a shelf in our kitchen, there was a tin box for the Jewish National Fund, into which we put coins to help the pioneers building a Jewish presence in Palestine.

...

My parents came to Britain as refugees from Poland. Most of their families were subsequently murdered by the Nazis in the holocaust. My grandmother was ill in bed when the Nazis came to her home town of Staszow. A German soldier shot her dead in her bed.

My grandmother did not die to provide cover for Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian grandmothers in Gaza. The current Israeli Government ruthlessly and cynically exploit the continuing guilt among gentiles over the slaughter of Jews in the holocaust as justification for their murder of Palestinians. The implication is that Jewish lives are precious, but the lives of Palestinians do not count.

On Sky News a few days ago, the spokeswoman for the Israeli army, Major Leibovich, was asked about the Israeli killing of, at that time, 800 Palestinians—the total is now 1,000. She replied instantly that

“500 of them were militants.”

That was the reply of a Nazi. ...

The Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni asserts that her Government will have no dealings with Hamas, because they are terrorists. Tzipi Livni’s father was Eitan Livni, chief operations officer of the terrorist Irgun Zvai Leumi, who organised the blowing-up of the King David hotel in Jerusalem, in which 91 victims were killed, including four Jews.

Israel was born out of Jewish terrorism. Jewish terrorists hanged two British sergeants and booby-trapped their corpses. Irgun, together with the terrorist Stern gang, massacred 254 Palestinians in 1948 in the village of Deir Yassin. ... [Israelis] could have negotiated with Fatah’s previous leader, Yasser Arafat, who was a friend of mine. Instead, they besieged him in a bunker in Ramallah, where I visited him. Because of the failings of Fatah since Arafat’s death, Hamas won the Palestinian election in 2006. Hamas is a deeply nasty organisation, but it was democratically elected, and it is the only game in town. The boycotting of Hamas, including by our Government, has been a culpable error, from which dreadful consequences have followed.

The great Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban, with whom I campaigned for peace on many platforms, said:

“You make peace by talking to your enemies.”

However many Palestinians the Israelis murder in Gaza, they cannot solve this existential problem by military means. Whenever and however the fighting ends, there will still be 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza and 2.5 million more on the west bank. They are treated like dirt by the Israelis, with hundreds of road blocks and with the ghastly denizens of the illegal Jewish settlements harassing them as well. The time will come, not so long from now, when they will outnumber the Jewish population in Israel.

It is time for our Government to make clear to the Israeli Government that their conduct and policies are unacceptable, and to impose a total arms ban on Israel. It is time for peace, but real peace, not the solution by conquest which is the Israelis’ real goal but which it is impossible for them to achieve. They are not simply war criminals; they are fools.

The pro-Israel propaganda is in high gear (at least in Europe) trying to convince everyone that

a) it is all the fault of Hamas – whatever happened in the Occupied Territories before Hamas? Since 60 years the fighting goes on, since 40 years very intensely when Hamas wasn’t even born? Question mark in my face …

b) that Hamas killed and maimed a lot of its own people and tries now to put the blame for it on Israel

c) that the death toll is after all “only 5 – 600” and the rest is typical Arab exaggeration and propaganda! While I think even one killed person is one too many (on either side) I find this modus operandi utterly despicable. This “only” translates into nothing else but that Palestinian lives are worth nothing.

I just saw a one-hour interview with Dr. Mats Gilbert, a seasoned and experienced doctor with a long experience in crisis and war torn regions. He was way back then also in Sabra and Shatila – another one of the Israeli massacres. He said that he thought to have seen it all in Sabra and Shatila but compared with Gaza this was “a drop in the ocean” (his words).

He also said that if Gaza falls – the whole free world would fall with it!

The campaign to defame and discredit him has already started along with all the other critics of polit-Israel and its actions. It seems the whole world is full of Anti-Semite these days as every person with a sane mind is condemning the slow genocide in Gaza!

But the Bush doctrine “either you’re with us …” doesn’t work – never has.

It just doesn’t work any longer to scare and intimidate the whole world with the word anti-Semite.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton utters something about Israel’s right of self defense in the “face of the rockets which keep raining on Israel” …

Let's Decry WRONGFUL Occupation of Hebrew's Homeland by Arabs
Posted by: iris89 on Jan 29, 2009 7:35 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Many wrongly place blame. They blame the rightful owner of land, their homeland for wanting to reclaim what is rightfully theirs from WRONGFUL occupiers. Right thinking people should decry the acts of Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah and his plan of illegal occupation and demand that it end.

Let’s face it, the Gazans are just wrongful occupiers of the Hebrew’s, Jews’ land.
WHO invaded those lands in the 636 AD chased and removed forcibly the people whose ‘homeland’ it was since about 1,500 BCE and who had been given it in perpetuity, and then moved in his own cohorts whose ancestors are the present day Gazans, that need to go back to where their ancestors came from?

Let’s look at the facts with respect this WRONGFUL occupation for centuries of the Hebrews, Jews, land of Palestine:

"After decisively defeating the Byzantine forces at Battle of Yarmouk in August 636 A.D, in early October 636 A.D (late Shaban, 15 Hijrah), Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah the commander in chief of Rashidun army in Syria held a council of war to discuss future plans. Opinions of objectives varied between Caesarea and Jerusalem. Abu Ubaidah could see the importance of both these cities, which had so far resisted all Muslim attempts at capture, and unable to decide the matter, wrote to Caliph Umar for instructions. In his reply the Caliph ordered the Muslims to capture Jerusalem.[1] Abu Ubaidah therefore marched towards Jerusalem with the army from Jabiya, Khalid ibn Walid and his Mobile Guard leading the advance. The Muslims arrived at Jerusalem around early November, and the Byzantine garrison withdrew into the fortified city." [source - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Jerusalem_(637)]
They then brought in their own followers to wrongfully occupy the land, the Palestines are the descendants of these wrongful occupiers.

They became WRONGFUL occupiers and now they scream 'bloodly' that Israel the rightful titled owner is an occupier because it kicked them out of part of Palestine in 1947. What nonsense for a wrongful occupier to falsely accuse the rightful titled owner for wanting his land back.

Hamas, Gazan Ishmaelites, are Responsible for All As They Lit The Proverbial Fuse in Palestine

Wars should be eliminated and at present one religion is responsible for over 90% of the violence on earth as pointed out by an Australian newspaper as follows:

"Did you know that 90-95% of the conflicts in the world today are Muslims fighting non-muslims or each other? " [source - The Weekend Australian, November 26-27, 2005 AD]"

I am getting very tired of hearing Palestinians and other Ishmaelite crying crocodile tears and always trying to put the blame for what they do on others such as their conspiracy weavers tried to do about who did 9/11/2001 attack on the World Trade Center, etc. Screaming against what they call wrongful occupations when they are guilty of occupying Byzantine territory, Palestine which belongs to the Israelites [see Numbers the 34 th. Chapter in any Bible for proof of this, and their outright greed as they have over 98% of the Middle East, but still greedly want the less than 2% belonging to their sister tribe Israel] - its time we get real and put an end to this so the world can stop experiencing continuous Ishmaelite induced strife such as shooting rockets at Israel.

Solution, dissolve this false religion and rid the earth of at least 90% of the violence. But of course the politicians will not do what is needed since as Jeremiah 10:23 says, "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." From the news that never makes the MSM :

DEBKAfile's military and intelligence sources report that the aid ship Iran Shahed , which the Israel embargo of the Gaza Strip forced to stay 42 km from the coast, took delivery Monday, Jan. 26 of sophisticated communications equipment from Cyprus for maintaining contact with Hamas leaders who remain in hiding. It came with a group of maintenance engineers.
The Iran Shahed set out from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas Dec. 29, the second day of the Gaza conflict, as a Red Crescent aid ship loaded with humanitarian and medical supplies for the Palestinian population.
On Jan. 13, when it reached a point 30 km from the shores of Gaza, the aid ship was surrounded by Israeli missile ships and ordered to leave the 40km zone blockaded by Israel at the outset of its Gaza operation. This was Day 18. When the captain failed to respond, a missile boat escorted it none too gently into international water.
Tehran has meanwhile airlifted to its embassy in Nicosia a group of military men in civvies, including intelligence and Revolutionary Guards officers, who are setting up a military ground staff base to support the ship's operations for Hamas. They have also hired Cypriot craft to shuttle between Cyprus and the "aid ship."
Western naval intelligence sources say the vessel has been converted into a floating logistical headquarters for the Hamas leadership, with Hamas frogmen using fishing boats to keep them connected. They believe the converted ship is the first link in a protective belt the Iranians are throwing around the Hamas leadership in Gaza.
Last week, Tehran asked Cairo for permission to fly a group of 20 journalists and photographers to Cairo on their way to the Gaza Strip to report on the situation there. Our sources report that five members of the group were bone fides press people, the rest Iranian undercover agents for attachment to Hamas' Gaza command. Cairo withheld permission.

In cases like this, its very important that you have some good friends. Karadzic has chosen the wrong side, therefore he sits in The Hague today. Olmert, Barak and the others falcons in Israel have the U.S. and Great Britan as a protector, therefore will nothing happen to them, they have a free hand.

Hamas Is Responsible For All - Not Israel

Hamas is Responsible for All As It Lit The Proverbial Fuse in Palestine, and Israel’s actions was only a response to Hamas’s uncalled for actions so if any war crimes were committed they should be charged to Hamas.

But of course the politicians will not do what is needed since as Jeremiah 10:23 says, "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." (Authorized King James Bible; AV). To read detailed information, go to the following article:
