Israeli Militants Poised to Resettle Gaza After Assault

By Linda Mamoun, AlterNet. Posted January 7, 2009.

As Israeli troops fight their way into Gaza, scores of determined settlers are prepared to enter in their wake.

Israel's "Operation Cast Lead" is reported to have overwhelming support among the Israeli public, but few are as enthusiastic as the former residents of the Israeli settlements in Gaza. As tens of thousands of Israeli troops descend on Gaza in an apocalyptic frenzy, scores of determined settlers are prepared to enter in their wake.

The Gaza settlements were dismantled in August 2005 as part of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s disengagement plan. In a single stroke, the Israeli army removed 8,000 people from the Gush Katif settlement bloc in the southwest corner of the Gaza Strip near the Egyptian border and from four smaller settlements in northern and central Gaza.

In spirit, many of the Gaza settlers never left the coveted Palestinian territory on the Mediterranean coast. Despite ample compensation from the Israeli government, many have chosen to live in nearby caravan camps in desert towns between Ashdod and Ashkelon, clustered with families from the same settlement of origin. Most of the settlers didn't pack before they were escorted out of their compounds, not believing that the Israeli government would permanently expel them. Some have posted the road signs identifying their old settlements in their camps.

The evacuees have reportedly suffered from high rates of divorce, drug abuse and other problem behavior. Imbued with messianic zeal, for the last three-and-a-half years, they have been mobilizing to resettle the land they believe is theirs by divine right.

Settler activists are counting on their historically strong ties to the Israeli military, with some units composed entirely of settlers, to help in their fight. Indeed, some soldiers and reservists currently in Gaza were there three years ago living in cherished settlement communities. On Monday, an article in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz described the bittersweet reactions of soldiers who had lived in Gaza settlements and are now back in uniform, noting, "Some see it as a first step toward returning to their former homes."

Earlier this year, Haaretz reported on settlers' plans to follow the Israeli army into Gaza. Boaz Haetzni, a leader of the settler movement, explained, "In our estimation the 'big operation' is only a matter of time; we will follow them in. We will not ask for permission from anyone. The [settlement] groups will be ready ... These core groups will do exactly what the group that re-established Kfar Etzion did after 1967. They will return to the lands where they existed in the past and will rebuild them."

Kfar Etzion was the first Israeli settlement established in the West Bank after the end of the Six Day War and is now part of a large bloc of settlements connecting Jerusalem to Hebron.

In August, settlers and their supporters commemorated the third anniversary of the Gaza evacuation at the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem. The event featured music, prayers, testimonials and updates from volunteers assisting the Gush Katif "refugees." A flyer promoting the event highlighted a biblical passage: "And the threefold cord is not easily broken" (Kohelet 4:12), a reference to the strength of the bond tying the Gush Katif settlers to one another and to the support they receive from the broader community of supporters in Israel and abroad.

The program was similar to "A Tribute To Hebron," an event held at the Great Synagogue in late December. This event, organized by www.thelandofisrael.com, was a fundraiser for the Beit Hashalom settlers, who were evicted earlier in the month from their illegally occupied house in the heart of Hebron. The night included live music, comedy sketches and a speech by former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Danny Ayalon, a prominent leader of the settler movement.

Both events reflect the pattern that has emerged over the last several decades. After Palestinian land is seized by the Israeli army, settlements are established, connected to Israel’s electricity, water and security system, and aggressively marketed to potential residents. Today, Israeli settlements and the state security apparatus cover over 40 percent of the West Bank. Nearly half a million Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, all of which are considered illegal under international law.

Look at the factual dead count in Gaza

Gazans never did pose the threat that Israel and their blood thirsty supporters insisted others to believe.
If the threat was an actual fact, hundreds or thousands of Israeli soidiers would be dead today and homes inside Isreal would have suffered major major damages from Hamas rockets.

The End Game has ALWAYS been more land for Israelis. The truths have been revealed. The "Peace Plans" were public relations stunts and Israel's mask is off.

I don't think that current Israeli policy matches with what these settlers want. Israel no longer wants the Gaza land, preferring to focus on the westbank instead. Gaza never was really part of great Israel anyway. So I guess the general plan is to zombify the place as much as possible(it's not genocide if the biological functions are still intact) and make Egypt and the EC responsible for maintaining the biology part while keeping military control over the area.

Conquest and ethnic cleansing.

In this thread, we can look forward to the lengthy shouting match that has filled this board since the current bloodbath began. I fully expect various posters to unleash a barrage of fragmented historical anecdotes all aimed at distracting us from the central realities:

1) Israel is the party in the position of strength, and thus bears primary responsibility for breaking any cycle of violence,

2) Israel is, by far, the party with the most blood on its hands,

3) Israel was founded by conquest and ethnic cleansing and continues expanding by the same means to this day.

Don't be distracted.

The next time someone has the balls to refer to Israel as she/her, pause and think how woman must feel? Especially as the conduit for eastern block/russian sex trade. Nice legacy.

Collective punishment=Israeli heritage
Posted by: zackfu on Jan 7, 2009 4:27 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Settler colonialism, like collective punishment, is standard Israeli policy since the country was 'founded', i.e. violently seized by terrorists (read British documents from the period) who illegally smuggled arms, blew up buildings, stole property and were, in fact, largely arrested on charges of terrorism (members of Haganah, Irgun, the Stern Gang, Mossad, etc).

As for the aggression in Gaza, it's part of the national ethos of Israel and part of a long legacy of institutionalized violence. But don't take my word for it......Moshe Dayan said it best.

Hamas is the problem...period.

Clearly, the Palestinians are victims......of terrible leadership....from Arafat and the PLO to Sunni Hamas.

I find it mildly ironic.......that the very people that want the world to see them shed a tear over the lifeless bodies of women and children at the hands of Israeli shells, are the same people that advocate and indoctrinate young children to seek a "noble" and bloody end to their lives.

Men parading around their four year olds with "Faux" suicide belts as if it were a child wearing a costume for school.
Gee...how cute!

Young girls.....eleven and twelve....singing songs about becoming martyrs and how wonderful it will be.

When Hamas sets up shop in schools and mosques........it is they that have the blood of their own people on their hands!!
That's disgusting...and they know exactly what they're doing.
They also know they'll get at the emotions of the sympathetic mindless obtuse drones like most of the people on this website.

My theory about Hamas.......and even Al-Qaeda......and any other terrorist organization........is that the end game isn't about peace....or land......or even the destruction of Israel or the US.

The end game for them.........just a hunch......is the battle itself.

Without a war.......without fighting......they're nothing.

If Israel were truly the "bloodthirsty war machine" that many believe......the Palestinians wouldn't be around at all and Hamas would be long gone.

It is truly tragic what is happening to Palestinians....... gut-wrenching to see so much suffering.
Most logical governments would see that after years of trying to defeat an enemy, an enemy much more powerful than yourself, an enemy that will never be defeated or go away.....that they would cease to continue putting their own innocent people in the middle of war.

Hamas, as a "government leader", uses Palestinians as pawns in their own bloodthirsty agenda.

The world is watching this latest onslaught unfold, with disbelief and horror, and yet how many times has Israel unleashed this kind of terror? Since its birth in 1948 Israel has waged a brutal war against the indigenous population of Palestine, and it has been supported by the world's dominant powers. Now, as Israel is an integral part of that empire, it is difficult to see how this brutality will ever end.

People insist on referring back to history and it solves nothing. They seem to have a need to brag about what they know. While it's all very interesting, it's not the solution to the problem. When all this was written including the bible, it was impossible to bomb a school and kill 30-40 people. Not to minimize facts and events, this is a new game and it's far worse than the old one. There are lots more people now than there were 1000 years ago. Proportionaltely more of them die. If human decency can't prevail, well certainly they know their math. For every child who dies, friends are left behind. They don't forget how their little friends got killed. They become the future enmies of Israel and will retaliate with a clear conscience. A perpetual state of war exists and always will. That's part of the reason why other countries choose not to be involved. There are possible solutions, but Israel has no interst in participating. And the beat goes on. ANNA

Persecution of jews is bullshit

Yes, they were deep fried in Germany prior to and during WWII.
Stalin also had his gulags, etc.
What the jews do NOT want the world to know is that they were instrumental in seeing that these things were done as, the few jews who knew that they would have future power also knew that this would help those few to achieve their aims of ripping land from the original inhabitants in the middle east to give them a base of operations in which they could conduct the very same terrible things for which they so want the world's tears.
They are as transparent as was the little piece of paper that chaimberlain brought back from Munich.

WE SEE THROUGH YOU, ZIONIST MURDERERS.
However, this story that they have always been so persecuted, etc has been used over the centuries by their "leaders" to foster sympathy from the gentilse and hate and anger by the rank and file jews.
Well, sympathy can be found in the dictionary somewhere between shit and syphillis.

These blodd thirsty child killers have taken their little yellow star and moved it from a string on their chest to becoming an armband.

I know I'll get hammered for this post but I don't really care.

I believe Israel has the right to exist and to do so in peace. I also believe the people in Gaza have the right to the same.

I agreed with Israel's desire to stop the Hamas rockets into Israel, be they accurate or not they are still an aggressive act against innocent people.

What I do not agree with is the Israeli militant settlers plans to follow the Israel Army into Gaza to re-settle the area. They were compensated for their homes before being moved out.

I do not believe Gaza can elect a Government that is not terrorist based. But I also see little difference between militants be they Arab or Israeli and these settlers who plan on returning to their previous homes in Gaza are militant.

The hypocrisy that is the state of Israel, on the one hand they demand that "Israel" be recognized by everyone - on the other hand they don't want to acknowledge the Palestinians in their midst! Israel must stop perpetrating the lie that Israel is under attack and persecuted! Israel must stop being terrorizing the Palestinians!

If Israel truly wants peace, then they must learn to be peaceful! The US must learn to stop being the world police and stop coddling bullies and despots around the world!
