Mumbai Attacks: 'If You Go After the Wrong People, You Convert Moderates into Extremists'

CNN. Posted November 28, 2008.

Deepak Chopra argues for a cool-headed response, saying that this is "Obama's opportunity to actually harness the help of the Muslims."

The Indian city of Mumbai exploded into chaos early Thursday morning as gunmen launched a series of attacks across the country's commercial capital, killing scores of people and taking hostages in two luxury hotels frequented by Westerners.

CNN's Larry King spoke with author Deepak Chopra about the situation.

Larry King: Where were you born in India, Deepak?

Deepak Chopra: I was born in Delhi, but I have been in these hotels many, many times. I have stayed there, so I know the scene; I know the restaurants. I have been trying to get in touch with my friends and relatives, some of whom I have spoken to, some of whom I can't speak to. The lines are jammed. We're texting each other.

A friend of mine from Egypt was in the restaurant at the Taj hotel when the firing started, and somehow she managed to avoid the fray, hid in a basement and is now holed up in a room which is right next to the Taj hotel and is waiting to be told what to do.

The situation is complex, Larry, because it could inflame to proportions that we cannot even imagine. It has to be contained. We now recognize that this is a global problem, with only a global effort can solve this.

And you know, one of the things that I think is happening is that these militant terrorist groups are actually terrified that [President-elect Barack] Obama's gestures to the rest of the Muslim world may actually overturn the tables on them by alienating them from the rest of the Muslim world, so they're reacting to this.

You know, this is Obama's opportunity to actually harness the help of the Muslims.

You know, there's 1.8 billion Muslims in the world. That's 25 percent of the population of the world. It's the fastest-growing religion in the world. We cannot, if we do not appease and actually recruit the help of this Muslim world, we're going to have a problem on our hands.

And we cannot go after the wrong people, as we did after 9/11, because then the whole collateral damage that occurs actually aggravates the situation.

In India, this is particularly inflammatory, because there's a rise of Hindu fundamentalism. We saw what that did in Gujarat, where, you know, Muslims were scorched and they were killed, and there was almost a genocide of the Muslims.

India has 150 million Muslims. That's more Muslims in India than in Pakistan. So this is an opportunity right now for India and Pakistan to recognize this is their common problem. It's not a Muslim problem right now; it's a global problem.

King: Do you think that this is just the beginning, that there's a potential impact, or more?

Chopra: There is a potential impact of a lot more carnage. But it can be contained. And right now, one of the questions [is, given] that there are militant groups that cross international boundaries, is who is financing this? Where is the money coming from? We have to ask very serious, honest questions. What role do we have in this? Are our petrodollars funding both sides of this war on terrorism? Why are we not asking the Saudis where that money is going that we give them? Is it going through this supply chain to Pakistan?

It's not enough for Pakistan to condemn it. Pakistan should cooperate with India in uprooting this. They should be part of the surgery that is going to happen.

It's not enough for Indians to blame Pakistanis. Indians should actually ask the Pakistanis to help them.

And it's not enough for us to worry about Westerners being killed and Americans being killed. Every life is precious over there. We have got to get rid of this idea that this is an American problem or a Western problem. It's a global problem, and we need a global solution, and we need the help of all the Muslims, 25 percent of the world's population, to help us uproot this problem.

King: What does India immediately do?

Chopra: India at this moment has to contain any reactive violence from the fundamentalist Hindus, which is very likely and possible. So India has to condemn that by not blaming local Muslims. They have to identify the exact groups.

And the world has to be very careful that they don't go after the wrong people. Because if you go after the wrong people, you convert moderates into extremists. It happens every time, and retribution against innocent people just because they have the same religion actually aggravates and perpetuates the problem.

King: Are you pessimistic?

Chopra: I think Mr. Obama has a real opportunity here, but a challenging opportunity, a creative opportunity.

Get rid of the phrase "war on terrorism." Ask for a creative solution in which we all participate.

King: Is it because the war on terrorism really can never be won...?

Chopra: Because it's an oxymoron. It's an oxymoron, Larry, a war on war, a war on terrorism.

You know, terrorists call mechanized death from 35,000 feet above sea level with a press of a button also terror. We don't call it that, because our soldiers are wearing uniforms. They don't see what is happening, and innocent people are being killed. So, you know, terror is a term that you apply to the other.

"terrorism is a word that we apply to the other"

this is the heart of the matter, and the way in which certain groups -- the us foremost among them -- justifies its military actions by calling them other names.

let's eradicate the use of the word terrorism altogether. in a moral world, any act of violence is an act of terrorism. perhaps if we begin from that thought, understanding and solutions become possible.

War on Terrorism is a Farce

India is a nation with extreme poverty and ethnic strife enhanced by massive corruption in government. What happened in Mumbai is homegrown violence directed at the elite and not some terror plot directed by Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

Likewise for the US government to claim that terrorism is the biggest threat to our nation is ridiculous and stupid. Americans have 100 times more chance of being financially gang raped by Wall Street bankers than killed or injured by terrorists.

Depak Chopea is a great man BUT he's wrong here.

Depak Chopra is a great man. He introduced the west to Auryvedic medicine, and his writings lead the west kicking and screaming into the new age.

However he is wrong about the terrorists.

Poverty does NOT cause crime. I grew up in poverty (actually below the poverty line.

Crime is caused by someone wanting something someone else has, and without the morals that tells the person that it is wrong to take what does not belong to you.

The Moderate Islamic people will NEVER speak out against the Islamic extremists for two reasons.

1. It is codified in their religion that they are NOT to speak out against a brother or sister Muslim about something they heard in Mosque.

2. the Moderate Islamic people know that if they do the extremists will murder them.

Now I add MY own two cents.

George W. Bush did NOT go after the wrong Islamic people.

Fact #1 Osama Bin Laden was hiding out in the mountain range of Afghanistan.

Fact #2. split in several sub sections.

a. Saddam Hussein was sponsoring terrorism by sending $25,000 US to the family of every suicide bomber in Israel.

b. There was a terrorist training base in Salman Paq. Iraq that trained AlQaeda and Hammas terrorists. There was a Boeing 727 jet without wings there. I saw the sattelite images of the training base with my own eyes.

c. Are you aware that Abu Nidal lived for many years (until his death) in Baghdad Iraq? For those of you who do not know who Abu Nidal was. He is the one that planned and carried out the hijacking of the Ship Achile Lauro, and he was the man who murdered Leon Klimghofer (a jewish man in a wheelchair) then he and the other terrorists threw Mr. Klinghofer's body and wheelchair into the ocean.

...a word that apparently does not appear in the Bush/Cheney lexicon, and the reason it does not appear is that their motives have been impure from the beginning. Pardon me if I have the notion that the US government had a hand in this attack, just as they did in the recent Georgia conflict. The wealthy elite in this country (and other countries) are not above starting wars for material gain, since they have no respect for humanity; no, they respect wealth and all the material comforts it provides them, and they don't give a tinker's damn about their fellow man.

we're all losers. Besides, the Muslims in India and America have plenty of freedoms and they ABUSE it whereas in their so-called "Muslim" nations, they're abused the most. Deepak Chopra used to be decent but nowadays, he's nothing more than a terrorist supporter and could care less about the real plight of the innocent civilians in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc ... getting persecuted by their own corrupt dictators and the Islamo-fundie militants and fanatics. By the way, why doesn't the so-called "left" take on brutal Islamo-fundie regimes that knowingly exclude non-Muslims? Pakistan has been given plenty of "free" chances to prove that they're doing all they can to hold terrorists accountable but they fucking blew it. The US should have finished their job in Afghanistan first and not meddled with Iraq or Iran. I may be a Christian but I love living in a secular nation which the US will continue to be no matter how badly the evangelicals try to ruin it for the rest of us. Likewise, the US needs to accept India as its ally on the war on terror and kick Pakistan to the curb. ABOLISH THE CIA !

In fact, the only reason the Mumbai incident was covered was simply because there were western hostages in those Anglo-business luxury hotels. Otherwise, this terrorist attack would have been written off. Neither the Far Right nor the Far Left care to deal with clamping down on terrorists or with human rights violators despite their loud claims of faux "concern". I may be a Christian but I know very well that Muslims are the biggest perpetrators of terrorist activities and they're heavily sponsored by both the Far Right and the Far Left.

The recent event in India was targeted against international Judaism. Unless we END our Judaism and Israel-building that simply antagonizes the world against us we will have the same activity take hold in America.

Put another way, those who fail to "read" history are doomed to endlessly repeat it.

That mistake was one thing when we were secure from attack simply because of our island-like nature and others had to pay for our aggression but it cannot be made again in this age where backpack-sized nukes are available on the black market and WE are the world-agreed target.

The time has come for us to tell Israel to step up and ask its Middle Eastern neighbors for peace "at any price" or for us to sever ALL relations with them and let that nation be erased. There is no other way.

Chopra lost me the second he used the word "appeasement." We cannot appease murderers. And we really are in a war with terrorists. By the way, Israel has tried to make peace with its neighbors and all it's gotten has been continued attacks and daily rocket barrages. The Muslims aren't interested in peace, they want total control. Take a look at the site "Religion of Peace" and you'll get a better idea of the murder and mayhem commited in the name of religion. And check out population statistics for Arab countries and areas, including Palestine, and you'll see how the Muslims are chasing out and killing non-Muslims. Bethlehem went from 80% Christian to 20% Christian.

Zbigniew Brzezinski revealed a hidden Fact that on July 3, 1979, unknown to the public and American Congress that President Jimmy Carter secretly authorized $500 million to create an international terrorist movement that would spread Islamic fundamentalism in Central Asia and "de-stabilize" the Soviet Union...
The CIA called this Operation Cyclone and in the following years poured $4 billion into setting up Islamic training schools in Pakistan (Taliban means "student").

These people were sent to the CIA's spy training camp in Virginia, where future members of al-Qaeda were taught "sabotage skills" - terrorism.
Others were recruited at an Islamic school in Brooklyn, New York, In Pakistan; they were directed by British MI6 officers and trained by the SAS.

As America teetered on the brink of entering World War II, Charles A. Lindbergh gave a fateful speech that did more damage to the America First movement for peace than all the propagandistic efforts of the pro-war groups he named in Des Moines that day. In his oration, the great aviator and American hero sought to define who and what had brought us to the point of no return:

"The three most important groups who have been pressing this country toward war are the British, the Jewish, and the Roosevelt administration.

"Behind these groups, but of lesser importance, are a number of capitalists, Anglophiles, and intellectuals who believe that the future of mankind depends upon the domination of the British empire. Add to these the Communistic groups who were opposed to intervention until a few weeks ago, and I believe I have named the major war agitators in this country."

"The First World War was by far the bloodiest conflict in human history up to that time. Schwartz and Skinner noted, “Woodrow Wilson proclaimed a war for democracy against ‘Prussian dictatorship,’ but that was propaganda. Germany had civil rights, an elected parliament, competing parties, universal male suffrage, and an unparalleled system of social democracy.” Germany was far more democratic than either the British or French empire."

Any Fundamentalist, whether they are from The IRA, ETA, or Islamic Jihad, must be dealt with on a diplomatic level. The bombings by Jihadists, British, Spanish or American Soldiers in uniform doesn't make the War deaths any less terrorizing or angering.

History has shown that peaceful negotiations are the best way of dealing with those organizations.

When we think of our cause as more just, because our adversaries are poorer and of different religions, that is when we fail.
Waging peace takes far more bravery and intelligence than waging war.

Indian anglophile class -especially indian english language media -is a race of Coolies and traitors.
the same class of indians who are doing propaganda agasinty china today are the same people who forced rajiv gandhi in 1987 to make friendship with china(and recognise tibet as part of china) why-? because the usa had ben friend with china since 1984 and wanted india tobe friend too as opposed to russia.-therefore the indian parasite class foll=made the Indian foreign policy viz china not to suit india but to suit american interests-it is doing the same but in revere direction this time because their anglo-american masters want them to do so.the same indian elite class (for example the president of ranbaxy one MR. Singh,, chairman of FICCi at the time in 80s was vehemently opposing any defence increase or of of buying of defence equioments while asking for freidnship with china as desired by usa ain 80s). the same FICCi is making propaganda agasint DRDo and(with 6% of defence budget) and indian scintisits saying it has not kept the develpopmnet of innovations and kept the 50 yurs old mig 21 not in shape!.) These same indian traitors want india to buy 40 yrs old arms (like junk f16 and f-18) from america knowing fully well that it comes with a heavy conditions unlike almost condition free and better arms(new mig-35) from russia.-but then thse elites are agents of angnlo american interests -so no surprise here-it is high time that thse elites are killed or kicked out of india-these are allwais(iraqi traitor) of india.• Russia is already supplying India with the Sukhoi-30MKI, an advanced "fourth generation" warplane that consistently defeats its Western counterparts, such as the frontline US fighters, the F-15C and F-16. Versions of the Su-30 are also being sold to China, Venezuela, and Malaysia.

June 1998.

Congratulations to pakistan also for having exploded atomic bomb like India rightly did!

History is
full of nations much poorer, improving themselves first by making themselves militarily victorious
,by fair or foul means, over much richer and superior civilizations. That is exactly how
a race of pirate turned shopkeepers that is England and America made themselves rich. That is also why these pirate race of anglo-americans want to keep the ill gotten advantage by denying othersany means to get power or independence. That is the philosophy of nato.Who bothered about America before it stole Nuclear Technology from Germans? The other prominent makers of first atomic bomb were Italians and Hungarians, and thir country does not posses nuclear weaopn. From Americans who stole the technology did the british steal it.America also stole from the Germans Rocket and missiles technology. Now they want to make world astand still as it was in late '91s through self drafted this pact and that pact. Now they want others not to have the same technology. In the same way the british stole Tea production technology , china making tech and what not from China. How much the british tea companies and british china making ones like royal daulton paying royalty to China?none! But they want others to pay for rubbish tech of '60s retrospectivelly!! In fact even France is fed up with this cancerous anglo-american push to sell, indtead of much better Fernch food, rather rubbish tasteless food of anglo-saxons processed food industy which pushes for rotten and infected food like british beef. India should have sided with France and China to push for common interests. But India chose, under pressure from Anglophile english paper reading minority,to succumb to Low quality rubbish anglo-american products. And Pakistan
understands this duplicity and is not afraid to disturb that cosy arrangement of these anglo-american shopkeepers.

The most important question is "WHY?"
1. Why did this happen? Home-grown or imported, terrorism is always a reaction when you do not listen to genuine grievances and try to address them. It is a protest in desperation, and the more delay is made in resolving the issues the more widespread it gets. Criminal elements can easily take over desperate persons and use them for their own vile purposes. It gives criminals to ultimately strike a deal with the authorities while the simple people who have been really wronged become the victims.
2. Why some people are willing to die while killing others? It is stupid to think that they just hate our lifestyle. Only an imbecile like American president G W Bush can utter this nonsense. Others repeat it because either they are themselves responsible for creating the trouble or they want to use it as a smokescreen.
3. Why the government is still harping on Pakistan ISI behind the bloody masacre. It's always been a tit for tat between RAW and ISI. A matter of 'pan calling the pot black'. Let's ask the two military-led organization to have mercy on the civilians and stop killing innocent people in both the countries.
4. Why the Investigator who blamed an Indian army officer for another bloodshed killed in the recent Mumbai episode? News reports said another official who was related this Invetigator was also shot by the 'terrorists'.
5. Why some people think the only way to eradicate terrorism is to massacre entire communities? Nothing can be more insane. Targeting a community just because they conquered some territories and ruled there for centuries in the name of Hindutva is the most insane thing. Aryans too were outsiders who invaded India millenniums ago and are still ruling it. Isn't it interesting that the most hated Mughal emperor Aurangzeb was the one to give the Maharaja of Jaipur the royal title of "Sawaai" which means a quarter better or more chivalrous than a common man.
6. Why real issues creating terrorism are not addressed? Despite the sane voices of intellectual stalwarts like Arundhati Roy why the people of Kashmir are being denied their birthright. Hasn't this inhuman Indian policy emboldened Pakistan to annex a part of Kashmir?
7. Why is Indian media so blind and biased? Check reporting on Indian TV channels and on the net; they seem to have a sick knack for naming Pakistan as the culprit, a country ruled by incompetent fools that itself is in turmoil and has been a target of the worst form of terrorism.

Come on friends, let's come to our senses. If we do not open our eyes to see what horrible things are coming next and do something effective to change the ground situation, the entire region is going to see the beginning of a global holocaust. The third world war. Stop injustice. Honour human rights everywhere. Do not let the friendship of your allies refrain you from speaking out the truth and supporting it.

Never mind that the last major attack, in Malegaon, turned out to be the work of Hindu extremists linked to the right wing BJP, never mind that the investigator who had exposed the true perpetrators and arrested them, Hemant Karkare, just happened to be among the first killed by the attackers in Mumbai just one day after receiving death threats linked to his prosecution of the Malegaon bombers. Nope, get back on your talking points and provoke the next war because after all, who bothers with facts these days? I mean come on, nop less than Larry King and Deepak Chopra are telling us what to think! Who are we to use our brains?

The hand behind Mumbai bombing Another false flag terror attack. (11/30/08)

The perpetrator who did the Mumbai bombing is the same one who did the 911 attack the first Mumbai bombing two years ago. They have the similar purpose.

1. They targeted at ordinary people. The purpose is to provoke the hatred of people against Islam. In another word, the attacker hope people to hate against the attackers themselves. Is it strange?

The bombing was bloody and savage. It only tarnishs the perpetrator themselves.

2. If the perpetrators targetted at Americans and Britons, they have better goal - the US and British army in Iraq and Afghanistan. To attack the foreign occupation troop there will catch much more applaud and cheers than to be criticized and hated by a terror slaught in Mumbai. It doesn't make sense.

3. The attackers are well trained and equipped and planned. It was supported by a big orgnization rich of resource. Only western intelligence has such ability.

4. The first Mumbai bombing (2006) was not solved. The series bombing killed nearly 200 people. Yet no suspect was found. Who has the ability to cover up such a big torror attack?

5. The media beat the drum to propaganda on "gunmen targeted Americans and Britains and Jews". But the victims are mostly ordinary Indian civilians.

It is only another 911 alike operation at the purpose to inflame an indignation against Islam. Who is benefitted? Those who hate Muslim and want to have more war in Mid-east.

I would say US intelligence is behind these attacks: either 911 or the Mumbai bombing.
(to be continued)
