Corporate Accountability and WorkPlace

Unions Create Their Own MoveOn

By David Moberg, The Nation. Posted September 1, 2008.

Meet Working America: a 2.5 million online member organization created by the AFL-CIO with a working-class base and a strategy to win.

After working thirty-two years as a security officer, Roger Lasch was angry when Target "downsized" him two years ago, just months before he could collect his full retirement package. "There were still executives getting bonuses while I was losing my job," he says. "I found that insulting." So when some young people from a group promising to fight for good jobs knocked on his door, he signed up. A political independent from suburban Pittsburgh, Lasch soon became active in the group, publicly speaking out against corporate abuse of workers and making phone calls to other members.

Lasch got involved because of "the desire inside myself to initiate some action to show that a few people can make a difference if you speak up, and some other people have the same feeling, and they get involved, and that starts the ball rolling."

The group he joined was Working America, and its ball is rolling. With 2.5 million members, it's the second-largest labor organization in the country (after the 3.2 million-member National Education Association). But it's not a union with members and contracts at their workplaces. The AFL-CIO calls Working America its "community affiliate."

Working America is one of the brightest new developments for a beleaguered labor movement -- giving a boost to political work this fall at a time when traditional union membership has been declining in the long run (despite an uptick last year). After Labor Day, canvassers for the group will try to contact every Working America member at the door with a field-tested, two-pronged message on behalf of Barack Obama. They'll contrast the positions of Obama and John McCain on critical issues, especially healthcare, but they'll also talk personally about why they're working on behalf of Obama. "We will give people information they're not getting," says Karen Nussbaum, the group's executive director,"but we also will communicate the way people personally make their decisions."

The AFL-CIO launched Working America in 2003 as a pilot project in four states -- Ohio, Missouri, Florida and Washington. (This year it will put over 450 organizers to work in eighteen states and contact active members in four more.) "There were changes in public consciousness, technological changes, and a readiness of the labor movement to do things in a big way," says Nussbaum. "That was combined with a very important election coming up in 2004."

After right-wing political dominance for decades, polls indicated American workers were increasingly sympathetic to unions, but corporate hostility and weak legal protections made organizing traditional unions in the workplace difficult. At the same time, the Internet made it easier and cheaper for an organization to communicate with supporters.

Individual unions and even the AFL-CIO had previously experimented with associate members, and independent organizers had formed institutions such as worker centers or 9 to 5, Nussbaum's earlier working women's group. The results from these experiments outside typical union bounds were mixed and modest but intriguing.

Although Working America extensively uses the Internet (as well as telephone, direct mail, and personal contact), it recruits most members through door-to-door canvassing, like many community organizations. This effective recruitment tactic also permits Working America to target membership geographically for political leverage, unlike purely Internet groups.

Initially Working America recruited mainly non-union households in suburban, predominately white and working-class neighborhoods that were politically independent -- places where labor's message could resonate but was missing. But increasingly they recruit as well in central city or suburban neighborhoods of African-Americans and Latinos, using bilingual canvassers or, as in Detroit and Toledo, reaching recruits through networks of churches.

So its members differ from those of many progressive groups: 63 percent have not graduated from college; 41 percent go to church weekly (one-third are "born again"); one-third support the National Rifle Association; half are not strong supporters of either party. Working America, as Nussbaum likes to say, is a mass organization with a working-class base and a strategy to build power to win.

Already I see that they are supporting Obama. This is a mistake ... especially supporting his health care plan, which is worse than doing nothing ...

If Work America wants to survive long term it needs to support those who support it's agenda, not latch onto a party.

Here's Chris Hedges take on Obama's Health Plan :

If We Want Good Health Care from Obama, We Better Push Him to Change His Plan

As a former Teamster who will NEVER cross a picket line, no matter who the strikers are, I am heartened by the rallying together of freedom-loving union members.

I also have no doubt they'll be supporting America's most inspiring leader since JFK!

I want to THANK EACH OF YOU...for "Standing-Up
& being Counted, Among the *Still Living*...& I say this because: "It's Healthy to Work / It Gives Reason, to *Stand-UP & Be Counted* /
It Doesn't Provide, any Extra Time-Idle Time, for Drugs & Alcohol, to be Abused, or Addictive Behaviors / Working Class People, THEY GOT CLASS...They've Got "More Umpth than Many Others...BECAUSE THEY KNOW...*HOW TO MAKE A LIVING...& WORK FOR IT*, Earn It / Working People, They're to be Saluted.
Look at the Thousands of Persons who "refuse to work...while *laying up on someone else* & "playing the Games of, *let's get all the benefits of the government that we can*...& we Don't Have to Work for It !!
WORKING CLASS PEOPLE, HAVE A *RIGHT TO COMPLAIN*...THEY PAVE THE WAY...FOR OTHERS TO HAVE FOOD / HOUSING / BASIC NEEDS MET / EVEN TO THOSE WHO BECOME INMATES...THE WORKING CLASS PEOPLE...ARE *FINANCIALLY SUPPORTING THIS*...WITH *THEIR TAX DOLLARS*...
Think about All the People who are Benefitting from the Tax Dollars of the Working Class People.
If they didn't work, WOULD WE HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO FINANCIALLY SUPPORT THE *BAD GUYS* WHO GET *THREE SQUARE MEALS A DAY (WHILE THE GENERAL PUBLIC & THE POOR GO HUNGRY) / THEY GET A *ROOF OVER THEIR HEAD*, CLOTHING TO WEAR (clean clothing, too)/ A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH TO SLEEP / THEY HAVE *NO TRASH BILLS TO PAY -- NO ELECTRICITY BILLS TO PAY -- NO WATER BILLS TO PAY -- NO SHOPPING TO DO -- *NO RESPONSIBILITIES OF FINANCIALLY SUPPORTING A FAMILY...CHILDREN, THEY BIRTHED*.
And the Working Class People, Get to Be DEGRADED / IGNORED / JAILED / HARRASSED / ABUSED...
WHY ?????
Probably, cause the American People, those Able to Work, CAN BE REPLACED, BY ILLEGAL ALIENS OR Persons from Foreign Countries, who have Permission, to Work in America...for LESS WAGES...
Think about this: "There's No Compassion in Business & No Business in Compassion."
Since the Economy is at an All-Time Low, Why do you think many of the People, who have a Little Money, are "Going into the Non-Profit Organizations...HAVE YOU SEEN HOW MUCH MONEY IS AVAILABLE...TO THESE ORGANIZATIONS??"
At least the Big Corporations & "Big Businesses" have to Have *tax write-offs*...so guess where their tax dollars are going, also.
(View the blogs on Human Rights, recently)
WAKE UP, WORLD...WE ARE IN WORSE SHAPE, THAN YOU THINK !!

Any movement for the working class must NOT be tied to either the Dems or GOP.

When the Democrats can prove that they are for the working class by not going "libertarian" on the economy, then they're worthy of carrying water for the Dems. Until then, STRICT INDEPENDENCE PLEASE !

The TRUE Democratic Party is Back!!!YEAH!!!

After nearly 3 decades of Corp Rule and 'Appeasement'Our True Doctrine is Back.
Oh we nearly fell like the Republican party into that hell Hole of Corporatism with the
Clintons & the DLC (est 1984 !?!).Reason why Gore,Kerry & Hillary Lost....Because we could smell the Corp whore stench on all of them.We voted for them, but we had to hold our nose. It was more a vote Against Bush, then full hearted support of either.
Here's where the DLC (Neo CONS in blue)showed their complicity and allegience to the corps (aka Neo Cons)
They assumed we bought into the fallacy this country was built for & By Corporations. They thought we missed the fact that 'Trickle down' meant 'Shit Rolls Down Hill'.
Hillary thought we would forgive/forget NAFTA.Thought we forgot our economy was headed downhill at the end of the '90's.Thought we forgot that Women are the Heart & Soul of the Equal Rights Movement.Did she forget we give birth to boys & girls- of all diversity. We are the Embodiment and Bearers of Diversity!Hillary thought we had given Up World Peace as Our Ultimate goal and constant Duty as the only species on the planet who can end War by not waging it!Thought we were willing to give up the health of the planet Our Descendants will have to survive On.Thought we had been drinking the Corp koolaid when she pulled out her Neo Con Tactics handbook (Rove did not write that book- he was still shitting his diapers when the first edition was written by Cheneycorp in the late 60's).Thought we Bought the Charade that 9/11 was a result of Radical extremeist who "Hated US for Our Freedoms". Thought we missed the fact they aimed at MIC targets. Thought we did not remember the '70's and the Hostage Crisis, Odd/Even Days, Carters request to turn down our thermostats and put on a sweater. forgot the numerous and constant Highjackings, the mans body lying on the tarmack.Hadn't made the connection between, Multinational Oil Industry, Oppressive Oil 'Royals' and the reintroduction of the gas guzzling lead sleds called SUV's.
We have always been here, We have always bitched the Loudest, We have always fought against Corporationism. We have been here since The 'Federal Reserve' Highjacked our Economy.
And You have always been the minions for the JP Morgan sect!
On Guard, Corp whores and blind Koolaid drinking zealots!
The Ol'Dem Party is Back and we are NOT Just Strong....We are Pissed!
Don't focus on One when there are millions behind him, ready to back him up, or take his place. We Want OUR Country Back!
"Give me Liberty or Give Me Death" I will not surrender this Country MY ancestors helped build to any Brick and Mortar, or those behind it's curtain. My ancestors came over for a better life, out from under Royal rule, religious persecution and a fair open market without a Caste system to keep them from living their dreams and reaching their personal Potential. I will Not dishonor their goals or their sacrifics for Some CEO's Golden Parachute Or Corp Global Power through Hoarding Resources and provoking Profit venture like War!
When a True Patriots looks at Mac, they see a false Idol carrying a Bible and Wearing a Flag- Facism with Logos

Working America, the downside

i have to say that Working America's labor conditions for its canvassers is horrible. their practices and attitudes towards canvassers mirrors the way that most businesses retain temporary employees to screw them out of benefits and such.

my girlfriend worked for them for a month, led to believe in their job ad that she would in fact be doing actual community organizing. as it turned out, she was nothing more than a canvasser. going door to door and signing people up on EFCA cards and collecting money, she labored day in and day out in the hot philadelphia sun as her managers sat in their office doing god knows what. the managers wouldn't even plan out turf; they would send the canvassers to gated retirement communities and rich, white neighborhoods, opening them up to not only harassment from doors knocked on, but for many of the black canvassers, police harassment. one spent the entire jail after being given turf in bucks county. one of the canvassers suffered from heat exhaustion and was denied immediate access to a hospital because the supervisor, 'had to' drop off canvassers on two more turfs. what's worse, is that after this happened, one of the supervisors upon being asked for the day off because of the heat told the canvassers, 'well, people around here are dying because they can't afford ac'.
Working America in theory has a union that protects its canvassers, but in practice it never did anything. Repeated attempts to contact reps proved useless, since it was an in house union.

The idea of Working America may sound laudable, but it is nothing more than another useless PAC. It contributes money to the nominally populist party without ever actually committing itself to real community organizing. Just take a look at its founding union, which spends such little amounts of money to do new organizing that it has come under fire for doing so. Down with Working America!

The potential

"Working America" sounds good, but I joined a year ago and all I've seen is requests for support for lobbying campaigns and some very low-value member surveys. This is fine as far as it goes, but it could be so much more! (This article suggests that perhaps in other places it is more.)

Using the Internet, an organization like Working America could build a rich network of local, state, national and industry newsletters supported by paid and volunteer organizers, at once working like a working-peoples’ MoveOn.org, a network of local news and action networks. These could support the formation of organizing committees in tens of thousands of workplaces. These committees could bring outside pressure to bear on owners and win gains for the employees, long before the majority were willing to risk and commit to an open organizing drive; and they could work for gains across a whole city or region the way the janitors did in LA and Vegas, defining targets with great flexibility.

Something like this was done in the ‘20’s and early '30's: the Trade Union Educational League, or TUEL, which operated as an underground movement in thousands of shops, laying a foundation for the CIO organizing drives that transformed America. Now America is ripe for something like that again, with tens of millions who want a union but lack the clout to get one.

Unions move on to what !

The union skeleton is taking the proverbial piss as exemplified by this article. We have union destroying enactments taken by our legal system that effectively prevent a workers right of any description. Of those, two provide the legal axis on which to swing a sladgehammer at any nadless idealist. One, "Work at will", and two "HIPPA". Overcoming these two federal administrative regulations will be the first mountain.
Good Luck, the union members eyes were closed when they succumbed to delegating responsibility to unaccountable money grubbers. SOLD to the next highest bidder, I do like the glossy brochures promoting all this wonderful stuff though, great PR, such pretty colors.

This is as bad as the religious right organizing in the same way. This should be illegal as it concentrates way too much power in the hands of a few.. criminal unions controlling such a movement - and democrats think this is good.. you all have short memories!
