Payday loan offices were sprouting up in strip malls and on street corners across America for years before Wall Street collapsed last fall - quiet evidence that hard times began hitting working families long ago. Now, more people than ever are using payday loans to keep bill collectors at bay. Quick money (at interest rates of around 500% or more), for people with bad credit has been praised by some as a lifeline for the poor and condemned by others as a cynical trap exploiting families in crisis. Some states have passed laws limiting interest rates, but there is one marketplace that knows no borders -- the Internet.

ANP videographer Lagan Sebert has been tracing the many ways Americans have been ringing up record debt. For this story, Sebert first staked out a conference on Capitol Hill where online payday lenders and lobbyists honed their arguments to Congress against reform; then he traveled to a small town near the Virginia-North Carolina border to learn about the experiences of a man who one day googled "bad credit loans" and soon found himself in more trouble than he bargained for.

Watch:

Illinois senator Dick Durbin's bill, the Protecting Consumers from Unreasonable Credit Rates Act, has been referred to the Senate Banking Committee where it will be up to the man who seems to be everywhere these days, chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), to schedule a time for the committee to review the bill. Durbin's proposal would put a national cap on interest rates at 36%. So far Dodd has not indicated when, if ever, he will call a hearing to consider it.

Borrowing money is what keeps fueling this boom and bust cycles, be it Credit Default Swaps or other complex securities, extreme interest pay day loans or as a governmental agency running an unbalanced budget.

Wars especially; those wars of choice that are borrowed for and fought for in blood, are not finished till the last bit of profit and payment is made. Wars should be supported by bond only, requiring the citizens to fund and vote on any budget. For a country should not go out into the world without the people's accord in will and ledger. Kings in suits for too long march unwilling instruments to a warzone to perform experiments in foreign policy with guns.

nothing but licensed loan sharks. Predatory lending in general is one of the worst things about our financial system and they should be outlawed.

It is attitudes such as the one above (let the dummies be dummies) that really burn my hide. It is not a matter of being DUMB it is a matter of being DESPERATE. Desperate people should not be taken advantage of, they should be helped.

Back when I worked in TV news, I met people who had unknowingly taken out predatory loans and they were totally screwed. They had paid faithfully, in time but the principle had not been touched, they had spent years paying interest only. Were some of these people dumb? Yup. Were they unsavvy? Yup. does that mean they should fall prey to predators? Nope!

Payday lending is capitalism at its worse. I made a video as a satire on a payday lending commercial that ran on tv in my area. Go give it a watch and pass it around. They are arrogant THIEVES, nothing more.
