How Scary the Economy Would Be in McCain's Hands

By Jared Bernstein, Huffington Post. Posted October 9, 2008.

McCain's economic plan contradicts his recently held fundamental views and is far out of touch with the needs of the country.

About a year ago, I had a memorable chat with a high-ranking Republican operative. The presidential primaries were revving up, and he asked me which Republican candidate I feared the most. Without hesitating, I answered McCain.

My rationale was simple. While he was increasingly out-of-step with the public on the war, so were all the other Republican candidates. But unlike them, McCain had repeatedly stood up to his party on matters economic, especially the Bush tax cuts, and he did so with resonant language.

In 2001, when the richest one percent of households held 18% of all income, he said he could not "in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of middle-class Americans."

In 2003, when we had gone through a recession, were waging an expensive war, and the federal budget had flipped from surplus to deficit, he voted against another round of tax cuts for the wealthiest, this time arguing that "At a time of war, at a time of economic stagnation, at a time of rising national debt ... one might expect our national leaders to pursue policies calling for shared sacrifice to achieve shared benefits. Regrettably, that is not the case."

The most recent data show that in 2006, 23% of all income is held by the richest 1%, the highest level on record but for one year: 1928. Spending on the war has not abated, and the budget deficit is on the rise. Middle-class Americans, who allegedly weighed so heavily on McCain's conscience circa 2001, are much more squeezed now than they were then.

The economy is surely in recession. Financial markets are deeply screwed up, and on Friday we learned that the job market contracted by another 159,000 last month, the ninth month of consecutive job losses.

In other words, if the Bush tax cuts didn't make sense in 2001 and 2003, they make a whole lot less sense now.

Yet McCain doesn't merely want to extend these cuts forever. He wants to expand them dramatically, by cutting the corporate tax rate by about a third, at the cost of $735 billion over 10 years, according to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center (TPC). As Biden effectively emphasized in last week's debate, that move delivers $4 billion in annual tax cuts to the Exxon-Mobil's of the world.

What happened? How does McCain's erstwhile good conscience countenance this policy? The answer, or at least the spin, was revealed to me a few weeks ago in a debate I had with his top economist, Doug Holtz-Eakin. When I pointed out that these cuts do nothing to help the middle class, while needlessly raining more wealth on the "haves," Doug disagreed. Based on the fairy dust of supply-side, trickle-down economics, he asserted that these cuts would lead to more jobs and income for middle-class families. Contrary to McCain's position a few years back, the campaign now frames a cut in corporate taxation as their middle-class tax cut.

(Fact check: Data from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office show that middle class people hold a mere 3% of all corporate income, compared to 88% for the top fifth, and about 60% for the top 1%. In our new State of Working America, we show that an important factor driving the almost unprecedented level of inequality right now is the double whammy of a) the growth of corporate income, like dividends and capital gains, versus labor market income, i.e., earnings, and b) the increased concentration of corporate income among the richest households.)

The only way McCain can implement this fiscal policy without generating unsustainable debt levels is to cut deeply into government spending. His and Palin's hated earmarks won't get you there (in Palin's case, of course, the hatred is newly founded). His promise to freeze certain aspects of discretionary government spending gets you even less savings than the earmarks. They'll have to go after the entitlements, and since Social Security is actually a relatively small problem in this regard, for their plan to work, they have to cut the heck out of Medicare and Medicaid.

This brings you to their truly unfortunate health care plan, which I wrote about last week in this space.

So, my first point is that McCain and his team have crafted an economic plan that contradicts the candidate's recently held fundamental views and is far out-of-touch with the needs of the country. That might not have posed a big problem except for the fact that a series of events, including the middle-class squeeze generated by stagnant incomes and rising prices, recession, and financial meltdown, have made the economy front and center in this campaign.

How did McCain end up with an economic platform, especially on taxes, that is so out of sync with his past views as expressed in the above quotes, an agenda that is anything but "mavericky."

The answer comes from the Palin debate last week. Since Ms. Palin is a newcomer on the national scene with scant governing experience, little knowledge of the major issues, and few deeply held views, she serves as a talking head for the people behind the curtains, the staff and advisors running the campaign. When McCain spouts this stuff, he's filtering it through years of intense experiences, as a veteran, a former POW, and member of the Senate for 26 years. With Palin, it's unfettered, thin, talking points.

"In the face of the current international financial crisis, any Presidential candidate pretending that middle class taxes will be reduced is purchasing votes with empty promises. It is surprising that few in the media are questioning such obvious but very fallacious pandering. It also underscores a disturbing dearth of understanding. Not only will the government not be able to lower taxes, it will have to raise them."

It's stunning and truly disturbing to think that there are so many Americans who would willfully vote against there own best interests and continue down this destructive path.

The very fact that Senator Obama is maintaining a slight lead and is not killing McCain in the polls reveals much about what manner of people we Americans are, doesn't it?

had the fortunate experience to have both Obama and Paulin within close driving distance yesterday plus a day off from work YAY!...

managed to get into both and here's my observations...

Obama packed in more people to see him... he had a realistic and workable message in his speech for the economic issues... simple metal detectors at the gate, not overboard... people were from all walks of life, age groups and ethnicities... folks that attended talked on the way out about him being 'presidential', 'is listening', 'has some good ideas'... Obama had an 11am rally and could have had more folks there if it was later in the day...

the Paulin crowd was much smaller with a heavier push towards yard signs, buttons, lapel stickers and bumper stickers... security seemed to be TSA on steroids, needed picture ID, surprised to get in... kept my mouth shut while the rest of the crowd fanatically cheered her racist, hate filled slings at Obama... people, mostly school age kid moms were actually cheering with words like 'terrorist' 'kill him'... plus her secret service detail looked like a group of armed linebackers in sunglasses... then at the end, one of her kids trotted out her baby... my first thought was why isn't that kid in school???

Here in economically depressed northeastern Pennsylvania, I haven't seen one Obama yard sign. But there are PLENTY of McCain signs and bumper stickers. It looks like the majority Democratic voters in this state just won't be able to vote for a black man. It's simply too much to ask of them.

There is no difference between these candidates. Both support the slow-death destruction of America by their pledge to maintain an Empire that we cant afford. An Empire that will bleed the people dry and destroy the constitution and ultimately end in a Nazi style holocaust. If you vote for either of these false choices, then you will only have yourself to blame when you go live in the FEMA camp.

Getting McCain
Posted by: Adastra on Oct 10, 2008 7:27 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I am more and more convinced that McCain doesn't expect to win. He seems like a sacrificial lamb, nominated by his party to throw the election, so the Grim Old Poops won't be stuck with trying to repair the damage they've done the nation. In fact, they think they'll come out ahead. Since the problems they've saddled us with won't go away, they'll wait for possibly six months into an Obama presidency, blame all the problems on him and campaign for the rest of the term on his failure to clean up the mess "he" made. If this seems incredible, I remember reading an editorial during Nixon's first term that started with the words, "This economy that Nixon has created.. ." Now this was three months into the first term and nothing a President does in office can have much effect on the economy for, say eighteen months. So how does any President "create" an entire economy ex nihilo in three months? He doesn't. Yet no one cried, "Foul" at this outrageous propaganda.

If Obama's re-elected despite that, they simply have another four years to try to convince the nation that he's made a worse mess than they did, so everybody should vote Republican. And if they manage to sell this monstrous fiction to the voters, they may hope to regain control of Congress in the first mid-term.

I am convinced this is the only way they can see forward in their march down the road to oblivion. If they should succeed in this program of deceit, the nation is doomed. I hope I'm wrong, but I wouldn't put it past Rove and Cheney. And if this is how it goes, I hope the electorate will recognize it for what it is, but I've seen how short their memories are.

With love under will,

Bob, Adastra,

The policies these guys are pursuing are eerily reminiscent of Hoover's policies during the 20s.

There's a great radio series called Wizards Of Money that you can get for free in mp3 format. It's amazing how they predicted all of this several years back. Here's one called

Back to the Twenties through the Looking Glass... Here's the description: "WOM 10 looks at the wild and risky behavior of the big banks. Current scandals (e.g. Enron) reveal that the recent wave of financial deregulation has restored the 1920s casino mentality of banks that ended in financial collapse and the Great Depression."

When you listen, remember this was recorded more than 5 years ago.

Here's the whole series

Obama Would Be Just As Scary

He can't even get his facts straight. How can 95% of American worker receive tax cuts when more than 30% don't pay taxes at all, being below the minimum level. For him, taxes are all about "fairness". "In the interest of fairness, I'll raise capital gains."

Bill Clinton knew that cutting capital gains taxes would spur investments. He was economically clued in. Obama is clueless. You think the stock market will fare better, with investors leaving the stock market? It's dropped 40% already. If Obama truly doesn't understand this, he is economically clueless. If he does, indeed, know this, then he must not care if the stock market tanks. Which is worse?

If you want true change, vote 3rd Party. The two parties don't care about you. Why do you care about them. Vote 3rd Party if you want to get the attention of these politicians.

Polygamy thrives in Colorado City, Arizona (McCain's home state) where thousands of American families (10,000 people) are systematically stripped of their democratic rights and women & children are abused. John McCain hasn't lifted a finger to stop it. What qualifies McCain to be president when he can't even clean up the Taliban in his own backyard? McCain would put an end to America altogether

America has become a fantasy economy of financial scams such as derivatives, swaps, futures, options, mortgage-backed securities (MBSs), collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), and structured investment vehicles (SIVs). There has been a massive migration of capital from real, productive industry to the "speculative sector" run by financial giants like AIG and Lehman Brothers.

This is going to get worse under Keating 5 McCain as he cuts Medicare, Social Security and taxes employer paid insurance. People entering the job market will find that their college education is not worth as much as they had though as the median income and purchasing power is moving downward. McCain could only add to the misery index.

America needs to retract from other countries with it's standing armies and put armies of people back to work on infrastructure and green power project and become an independent, sovereign nation that deals well but fairly with other nations. We the people hold the keys to our future and we need to use them against McSame-ism.

The damage is pretty extensive. Around the world, every big investor is now asking the obvious question: Is the United States Government too big to fail?

That's the scary part that hasn't happened yet. Would you like a warning label on the USA? WARNING: past performance doesn't guarantee future results. Manufacturer is not liable for product misuse.

Are there other governments that have failed? How about Argentina 5 to 10 years ago? 70% unemployment. How about Brazil 20 years ago? How about Liberia's government, er, there isn't one, just a few armed thugs who collect money.

How about Britain in 1930? Britain was financially the strongest nation on earth, and the sun never set on the British empire, except Parliament was corrupt and they borrowed and spent like it was going out of style. So, some war mortgages were no good and British Pound Sterling collapsed.

All the same I'd rather have Obama running the train wreck.

Panic and the Threat of "Martial Law"
Posted by: p.ray on Oct 10, 2008 12:11 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This "global financial crisis" is just another case of Crony Capitalism of the most despicable kind whose motivation goes way beyond their over-proportional greed.

Henry Paulson used panic and the threat of "martial law" to centralize power and bring the world one step closer to a global money market controlled by Paulson's cronies.

Paulson’s cronies and their ideological ‘free market’ approach of loose regulation and low tax regime precipitated the bankruptcy of Lehman Bros., Paulson's bitter rival. He sat on the sidelines and watched it imploded (or as his mentor Erlichman was fond of saying, ‘to twist in the wind’)! It was Credit Default Swaps that led hedge funds and banks around the globe into panic sell offs - NOT FM/FM!

What I find most disgusting about this entire pre-programmed and predictable debacle is the "blame the consumer" tactic that has inspired more divisiveness among our citizens. To whit, those who use financial warfare to cripple countries, foment racism, and inspire class warfare should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity!

BUSH/CHENEY/MCCAIN Greenspan, Born, Rubin, Gramm, Paulson, et al - the gig is up! There is no place to run and nowhere left to hide. If you think you'll escape to South America, I bet even Paraguay will gladly overturn their "no extradition" policy, send you packing, and appropriate your assets in the process!

Hey, if the world we once knew succumbs to the onslaught of gluttonous greed and pathological narcissim, schadenfreude may indeed be all many of us have left!

PS Obama must find a place for Bernie Sanders (and Dennis Kucinich) in his cabinet - true patriots all.
