War on Iraq

Introducing DisneyIraq: The Unhappiest Place on Earth

By Scott Thill, AlterNet. Posted August 1, 2008.

An American financier is pitching a vast theme park in Baghdad, not out of kindness, but as he says, "for profit."

"I'm a businessman. I'm not here because I think you're nice people. I think there's money to be made," explains Llewellyn Werner in his pitch for a vast recreational complex to be built in, of all places, Baghdad. "I also have this wonderful sense that we're doing the right thing -- we're going to employ thousands of Iraqis. But mostly everything here is for profit."

It has come to this. We're not even pretending anymore. As the years, memories and excuses have fallen away like dead skin, America's invasion of Iraq has revealed itself for what it truly is: a consumerist pipe dream. The Great American Mall of the Middle East. Disneyland in the desert.

And since we're already giving away billions in duffel bags, why not throw another billion or two down the money pit? Where there's funding, there is fire. And in the case of the Baghdad Zoo and Entertainment Experience (BZEE), there may also be firefights. If you can ignore the bullets, IEDs, power outages and, well, the entire occupation, you might just have yourself a good time.

"In Southern California, there's drive-bys and everything else," reasoned Ride and Show Engineering Executive Vice President John March, whose company has been contracted to develop the site, which is adjacent to the Green Zone and fast-tracked by the Pentagon. "So there's danger everywhere. I think the key thing is this will be tremendous for Baghdad," he explained to Fox News chatterhead Bill Hemmer.

If by "tremendous" he means a huge target, then March, who refused to participate in this article, is dead right. It is also financially tremendous for C3, the hedge fund holding company that Werner oversees: Already given a green light from the Pentagon and an endorsement from Gen. David Petraeus, Werner secured a 50-year lease on what used to be acreage containing Baghdad's looted and left-for-dead zoo for "an undisclosed sum," according to the UK's Times Online. He is quickly building everything from a skate park, museum, concert arena and rides to future diversions. So far, Werner has collared $500 million from his elusive investors, who are practically impossible to find (a rarity in the Internet age) and secured joint partnerships across Iraq for a variety of projects. The million-dollar skate park is scheduled to open this month, and further hotel and housing developments will follow, especially since Werner has exclusive rights to them.

And although they may be managed by Iraqis, their profits belong to America. Just like most of country's oil reserves.

"Even the idea of bringing U.S.-style escapism entertainment to the hell of Baghdad is absurd," explains author and journalist Dahr Jamail, who, unlike the majority of his peers, has actually ventured outside the Green Zone without being embedded in a military detail. "Just watch how much of this infrastructure even gets built."

That's just the beginning of the problems, explains journalist Sharon Weinberger, who covers the Pentagon and other disaster capitalist complexes for Wired's Danger Room. (Full disclosure: I cover music for Wired's Listening Post.) The BZEE may get built after all, but who's to say it'll be left standing when the smoke clears?

During Cheney's secret 2001 meeting with oil comany bigwigs to determine the Bush administration's energy policy (?), he reportedly rolled out a Middle East map on a desk, tapped his finger on Iraq and exclaimed, "That's where the money is!"

Apparently he meant rollercoasters as well as drilling rigs.

1) Why would anyone build a theme park "out of kindness"? Only Michael Jackson ever did that. Of course it's for profit - oh, the fiends!

2) Yep, if the violence increases, the investors (whoever they are) would lose, so apparently they're guessing the violence will not increase. Maybe they have read recent AlterNet pieces by Raed Jael and Joshua Holland to that effect.

I wonder "Who" is going to go there to play? We have already killed or relocated most of the Iraqies and stolen their oil. I guess It'll be the Saudi's and Cheney , possibly the Bin Ladens, I hope that they enjoyed their flight out of the USA,...But, won't it be awkward stopping the rollerrink, merry-go-round,and hot dog stands, as well as the keepsakes (miniature ied's, tiny viles of blood and depleated uranium DURING PRAYER TIME 5 times a day????

I can't wait to try the "The Mine Field" ride you can dodge real bullets, road side bombs, RPG's, suicide bombers on bikes, in cars and donkey carts. It'll be a big hit with the locals.

Would build a theme park in the middle of a war zone??? I doubt the Iraqi people would even go...furthermore, this investor could have found a better cause to fund then Disney Land over Iraq (which sounds ridiculous). My guess, his investment (along with his investors' investments) will all fall through. 9/10 it will need to be guarded by our military just to discourage it from being destroyed by Iraqs who do not want western businesses there (especially when they build a theme park!) Why not invest in apt buildings since so many are homeless or displaced? It kills me that we can go to another country and buy and sell their land and natural resources...I dare anyone from another country to think about doing that in the US of A...they'd be nuked! Their greed and love of $$ is gonna leave them on the short end of the stick in this venture.

This kind of crap is why it's hard to take Alternet seriously.

I can't fault someone for looking for a way to make money provided he is:

1) Honest about his motives and
2) Is going to use his own or his investor's money and not US tax dollars. and
3) Does not expect special consideration from the US in any way.

After all, no one complained about Disney in France or Japan...all built with investor money for profits.

You've got a handle on the facts of the Iraq tragedy, another creature impersonating a human being adds his grotesque vision of what's good for those unfortunate people via huge profits for himself. Could this horrible situation get any worse? The answer seems to be: Hell, yes!

Iraqis have been robbed of electricity, water, sanitation medical care, schools, jobs, freedom of movement, any level of personal security, and in millions and millions of cases their homes, their loved ones, and their very lives. Oh, yeah, a theme park is JUST what they need!

Yes, let us feel outrage and disgust at yet another crackpot with an insane idea and people stupid enough to back it.

Oh, and after reading the punchline at the top of this article about how this horrid oozing slime of a man is going to go into business to make a profit *gasp*, what a bastard! That alone got my blood boiling, the nerve of it! Next thing you know, the guy might be making money!

The whole world is for sale. You, me, our families, our lives, everything we own and everything we are. Nothing is sacred, nothing is untouched by this evil that runs nearly unchecked through the world. What the fuck are you waiting for, things to change? For the vampires to see the error of their ways just because they are wrong? Yeah. Just a little while longer and it'll come. Stop worrying about it. The species is a disgusting worm crawling about the surface, hopefully erased and replaced sooner instead of later. No god is coming to bail us all out and right the wrongs, no evolutionary change is coming to make us better, forget all that bullshit that keeps you thinking its going to be ok. It's not. This is how it will be until we are all gone. So dont worry about it, and be what you want to be in the world. Everyone and everything else outside of your influence will get along just fine without you.

I hope they give every remaining Iraqi a lifetime free pass if they do build something this obscene. Could you imagine another country invading America, setting up shop and installing a theme-park in their own image here? We would be OUTRAGED!

America's love affair with gasoline-powered cars reminds me of...

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
the monkey traps I read about in India.

Gibbons were caught using narrow-neck glass jars with a banana inside, tied to a post with a loose rope. The gibbons that were trapped wanted the banana so bad, they wouldn't let go after taking hold.

Clearly American drivers are trapped by their love for gasoline. The question is, how high must the pump price rise before they let go?

Three years ago I was working as Middle East Investment Adviser, to an international financial services Company specialised in arranging loans for major projects worldwide. One of the projects they were working on was titled SHANGHAI NIGHTS, like Arabian Nights! Initially the Project's Loan requirement was around 800 million US$. My Principals had already hired a Design Consultant out of USA to prepare various 'themes' for this massive theme park. I had the opportunity to have a look at these before they were presented to the Chinese Client, Govt of course. It had everything which exists at Disney Land and Disney World plus more! I came to know that when the Chinese saw the themes in the presentation, they went red, blue and green in their faces. They shouted saying the themes were an insult to China and its 10,000 yrs old Cuture and Civilization. They did not want Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Superman, Spider Man and cowboys. They had their own stars like dragons, monkeys, snakes, the thousand mile march and the Great Wall of China. You know what? My Principals went back to their drawing boards and offered exactly what the Chinese wanted. The new designs were accepted, the loan was arranged and may be in a year or two, Shanghai Nights will be a place worth visiting. This theme park will definitely be profitable. Given the population of China and state subsidized tickets, any number of millions you can imagine will visit Shanghai Nights without the blessings of Mickey Mouse, Superman and Donald Duck. Compare this to the "Ozymandias" type gargantuan projects being proposed by the Americans for Iraq like the subject of the above report, not to forget the US Embassy already under construction. Worst of all, 50% of the Iraqis who might have bought tickets to see these structures are either already dead or about to die or are refugees in all the 4 corners of Iraq and the World! Stupid Americans! Bringing Donald Duck and Dubya to the Capital of the Sumerians, Babylonians, the Abbassids where Hammurabi's Code (Legal),writing and the astrolab were invented.

and in its true

I'll love you my

Ride and Show engineering has no mention of this on its website. Al Jazeera has no articles about this. There is no documentation whatsoever that is not a repeated 'story' in the lay press. One man's claim on the news.

A million dollars for a skateboard park?? The numbers don't add up.

Makes me sick. Think of the improvements to the infrastructure that this guy's "investment" could make. Things are getting better, but lets keep our eye on the prize. Lets get running water, sewage service, rebuilt hospitals and schools and electricty to all of Iraq before we start building theme parks. Nice thought, pal, but it stinks of, "Let them eat cake."
