War on Iraq

Despite Bush's Vow to Veto, GI Bill Passes in a Landslide

By Paul Rieckhoff, Huffington Post. Posted May 23, 2008.

75 Senators stood with veterans yesterday to pass the Webb GI Bill. The remaining hurdle: President Bush.

On Thursday, May 22, three-quarters of the Senate voted to support a new GI Bill for the troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Following the 256-166 victory in the House last week, the GI Bill has achieved almost unparalleled momentum. A number of Senators actually changed their NO votes to AYE, as it became clear that this vote was going to be a landslide: 75-22.

These 75 Senators stood with Senators Jim Webb and Chuck Hagel in favor of a new bipartisan GI Bill that actually covers the cost of college. As these Senators return home to honor troops and veterans during the Memorial Day recess, they can proudly point to their vote this week as proof of their commitment to our troops. IAVA thanks each and every one of them.

For the 22 Senators opposing this crucial legislation, I can only express my disappointment. For them, partisanship came before patriotism. (Three Senators were not present for the voting, including Senator Kennedy, who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, and Senator McCain, who was at a fundraising event in California.)

This was truly a historic vote, and the numbers give me tremendous confidence for the future of the GI Bill. We had a little debate at IAVA HQ about whether to call the margin "powerful" or "overwhelming" -- but the real adjective is this: VETO-PROOF.

The President has threatened on multiple occasions to veto the emergency supplemental if it includes war timelines or other policy restrictions, or if it goes over his arbitrary budget cap. The Administration has also expressed objections to the GI Bill based on concerns about retention -- basically, they believe that if a GI Bill benefit is too good, it'll reward veterans too richly for their service and draw them away from re-enlisting. You can read my response to that nonsensical argument here.

So with a veto threat looming, we haven't won yet. There is one final hurdle -- and it is a big one: the President. When the politicians return to Washington after Memorial Day, Congress will get a final version of the war funding bill to the President, and President Bush will have to decide whether he is with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, or against them.

We've seen today that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle can come together to support our troops. With your help, we can ensure the President will do the same.

Digg!

I'm glad this billed passed.. what I dont understand and what I despise about the way bills are formulated and introduced, is the "package" deal aspect.. why is funding for heating subsidies for the poor, extended unemployment benefits, bridge repair and rural schools etc..included in this bill?

Not that these are bad issues..they aren't. but the process is why our government wastes so much money on pork and bills cant get passed. Benefits for our military has been used and play with so other issues could get addressed! Webb should have done better than this!

It still leaves the Guard and Reserve out of the loop. I did straight 8 years in the National Guard, deployed to OIF and OEF, and participated in numerous other homeland security missions since 9/11. I never had the uninterrupted time to go to school and use those great education benefits, and I never qualified for the active duty GI bill. Now I'm leaving the guard this summer with no education benefits I can take with me. They all go away when I stop going to drill. I'm not the only one in this predicament. The recruiter never tells you these things...dammit! Congress....hello?

The more I get to know about how washington works, I am Convenced that if a lawmakers, does not have something in a bill, that allows the lawmaker to go home, and tell the locals, look what I did for you. The bill doesn't Pass. I think 100% Public financing may stop some of this. because lawmakers won't rely so much on Corporate donations.

Where was that attitude concerning all the Non Servers who manipulated us into thhis debacle in Iraq . First and Foremost being Dick Cheney who had other priorities and so managed 5 deferements nd of course who can forget the Faux Fighter Pilot who strutted around the USS Lincoln in a flight suit . Half of the morons think Dubya flew the plane . NO he was a PASSENGER but loves playing DRESSUP

If we got the cajones to send people to die and get maimed then we damn well better have the balls to provide them with some just compensation and a few advanteges like the GI Bll for a college education.
But the Rethugs just don't like to do that, eehhh Sen. Voinovich. And you'll be the next Rethug to lose office. You pusillanimous robot.
