War on Iraq

Iraq Vets Testify to War Atrocities, Vow to Fight and Resist Bush Policy

By Liliana Segura, AlterNet. Posted May 20, 2008.

Angry vets testify to horrors of killing innocent people, and the way they came to dehumanize those they were supposedly sent to "liberate."

"I was ordered multiple times by commissioned officers and noncommissioned officers to shoot unarmed civilians if their presence made me feel uncomfortable," Sgt. Jason Lemieux told a panel of lawmakers last Thursday in a packed public hearing on Capitol Hill. "These orders were given with the understanding that my immediate chain of command would protect our subordinates from legal repercussions." Lemieux, a former Marine who was part of the invading force that entered Baghdad in March 2003, came to Washington, D.C., with Iraq Veterans Against the War, weeks after the fifth anniversary of President George Bush's declaration of "Mission Accomplished" to tell Congress enough is enough. Invited by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., the veterans spoke firmly and eloquently before members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, telling stories that were just "the tip of the iceberg," as Lemieux put it, but which nevertheless offered a frightening range of accounts: violent house raids, the killings of innocent people, "drop weapons" used to make dead civilians look like insurgents, racism in the ranks, and their own process of dehumanization as they became inured to the humanity of those who they were supposedly sent to "liberate."

The morning was infused with a sense of urgency. "Every day that the occupation continues, more men, women and children will be killed, maimed, or forced to flee their country as refugees," said Kelly Dougherty, executive director of IVAW, in introductory remarks. "More veterans will return home with lifelong scars, emotional and physical, with little support to help them readjust.

"Many," she added, "will fall victim to suicide." Indeed, of the nine veterans who testified that day, two said they had tried to kill themselves after returning home.

Like the Winter Soldier hearings in March, when more than 200 service members gathered in Silver Spring, Md., to give their eyewitness accounts of the injustices occurring in Iraq and Afghanistan, "Winter Soldier on the Hill" was designed to drive home the human cost of the war and occupation -- this time, to the very people in charge of doing something about it. Elsewhere on Capitol Hill, the rest of Congress was debating the next round of funding for the war -- whether to approve more than $160 billion in additional taxpayer money to continue the occupation. "I think you know that the very issue that we're talking about today is on the House floor today," Woolsey noted -- a partial explanation for the small hearing room and the small handful of lawmakers who showed up. Even for those politicians who have consistently criticized the war, however, a group like IVAW -- whose platform includes immediate withdrawal of all occupation forces from Iraq, including contractors, as well as paying reparations to the Iraqi people -- is a politically risky ally. "I think we're generally viewed as too radical for most politicians," one IVAW field organizer and former military intelligence officer, T.J. Buonomo, said after the hearing. And this is a Congress where political courage has been in lethally short supply.

Not that IVAW expects Congress, after five years of cutting checks, to suddenly become the driving force that will end the war. Rather than lobbying politicians or pouring its energy into the presidential election, IVAW has focused on recruiting and chapter-building to fortify its ranks. Membership has reached 1,200, with members in all 50 states, as well as in Iraq, Afghanistan, and most recently, Germany. Concluding his remarks before the caucus, Washington, D.C., chapter head and nine-year veteran of the New York National Guard Geoffrey Millard spoke confidently about IVAW's role in fomenting an antiwar movement capable of ending the occupation. "The only remaining question is," he said, "will Congress be there to help us?"

"Welcome America to the second Vietnam"

Growing up, all Kristofer Goldsmith wanted was to join the Army. "I wanted to be in the military my entire life," he recalled, showing a photograph of himself at age 10 in military garb. But whatever sense of patriotism inspired him to want to wear the uniform as a young boy became something different after 9/11; the Bush administration's lies linking the terrorist attacks with Saddam Hussein inspired a willing foot soldier for its "war on terror."

Goldsmith was 16 years old when the planes hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and he recalls thinking that the United States ought to use biological weapons to take out the entire Middle East. "I joined the Army to kill people," he admitted, "to kill Iraqis, to kill Muslims." Trained to use artillery -- "some of the most destructive weapons that the army has" -- he deployed in 2005, only to find himself in Sadr City doing "supposed humanitarian aid," which he described as becoming "trumped by presence patrols" -- a daily reminder for Iraqis that they were surrounded by an "armed and dangerous army" patrolling their streets."

"It's basically fear tactics," Goldsmith said. The violence against civilians and the degrading conditions the occupation imposed on Iraqis became appalling to him. Slides he presented during his testimony showed raw sewage covering the floor at schools and the ground outside a hospital. "We made no attempts to repair it," he said. "We were unable to." In fact, the armored vehicles used by the military tore up the streets, exposing drinking water pipes to raw sewage. Goldsmith also showed a photograph he took of graffiti written on the side of a school in Sadr City that read, "Welcome America to the second Vietnam." It's not only critics in the United States who have drawn such comparisons, he said. Iraqis, he says, "are smart, educated people that are dying every day."

When the dust is settled, we have to make sure that George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and the tidal wave of walking, talking excrement who were responsible for the atrocitied against the men, women and little children of Iraq are tried as war criminals and sent to prison for the rest of their lives.

Do yourself a favor, go to PBS.com and pick up a copy of the DVD "Bush's War". It was originally broadcast on March 25 and is eye opening and revealing.

The new American century is over. Get used to the idea.

We have to change Foreign policy, The Cold is war is over, but the people in Washington, are Acting as if the Cold War continues. We have to create a way to cause large defense contractors, to turn away from the manufactor of weapons. If they can make money from peace the will support it.

How do the Troops Do it?????
Posted by: nobuko on May 20, 2008 4:48 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
For the life of me, I cannot understand WHY the troops continue to sacrifice their lives, limbs and mental stability? All I know is that, if they tried to send me to a country whose NEVER done anything to me, or our country, I would be sitting in jail this day! Why won't they just STAND DOWN, after learning and knowing what we KNOW NOW? I am positive, there are some die hards that will die for Bush, but I believe the majority of our troops will not! I mean they can't put 110,000 troops in jail .... can they?

To me, the Invasion of Iraq is like my home being broken into, and thieves taking whatever they want from my house. We have to buy gas, why the freak won't our government buy Iraqi's Crude, instead of murdering hundred of thousands of Iraqi's, turning their country into ruins, then just TAKING their stuff? To me, its like GETTING, & BEING RAPED!

I know if someone broke into my home, while I was home, the bastards would not leave out walking! But for some reason, the Iraqi's are the INSURGENTS, not our government, and our troops ...... GO FIGURE!

"Bush and the Defense Department oppose it, primarily because they claim it would provide too large an incentive to leave the military and go to college."

I'm starting to understand how these people think.

Don't provide a good education to the poor or they might have ambitions beyond selling burgers and pumping gas.

Don't offer education to troops because they might want to do something other than sleep in the dirt and shoot people for a living.

Or the old favorite, "don't offer universal health care or everyone will quit their jobs."

America, what a country.

Not losers
Posted by: Gregory Kruse on May 20, 2008 5:34 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Back when the war was just getting started, I "replied to all" to a chain email from a family member about the "heroes" who were going to Iraq to smackdown Hussein and bring democracy to the Middle East. I brought the wrath of many in return because I said the troops were "losers", meaning that they were being hoodwinked (the Bushies were winking at each other while the troopers were hooded), and told what great patriots and winners they were. They were mostly young guys with few prospects sent by the privileged class to kill anyone who dared to resist the occupation of their land by a foreign army. They were cynically encouraged to risk their very lives to secure the wealth of their senders. They had no chance of winning.
I write now to honor the members of IVAW who have accepted the fact that they have been losers from the outset, but are now valiantly fighting to secure their own dignity, and have turned to face their real enemy, the people who used them so shamefully. Their courage in speaking out surpasses that of merely obeying orders that could result in death on the battlefield or surviving horrendous ordeals. They have risen above the winner/loser mentality to become honorable citizens.

The military is a trap
Posted by: blogbooks on May 20, 2008 5:36 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
In my time in the Air Force I saw the trap laid out plainly before me. I saw people fall into it again and again.

Kid from a not-wealthy (in my mind there are 2 classes, rich and not rich) family joins up and starts making what seems to him like a lot of money. Then he gets married, maybe to his hometown sweet heart. Next thing you know he has a kid or two and credit cards (that carry a balance).

His enlistment is coming to an end and the military is offering him a job for life with health care for his family. Most people in this position re-enlist and go career.

The fear of civilian life pervading career military folk is amusing. The head of my shop was often heard remarking about what he saw as the inevitable result of entering the civilian work force, "maybe you can't find work, maybe you lose your job so your wife leaves you and you have child support and nothing to your name."

A better GI bill would break the trap, and they definitely don't want that.

This is actually the third time we have gone this route. War profiteers keep forcing us into these scenarios.
Basically we have a situation where the Bush League is trying to dig a hole to China. They have convinced themselves that it is possible and no amount of evidence will convince them that their plan is fundamentally flawed in it's concept. All to keep us from coming to the conclusion that it was their behavior during the first eight months in power that inevitably led to 9-11.

Yes, what can you say about leaders who torture their own troops?

Is it insane?

Should the president be promptly impeached for this? If not, why not? Can't Nancy handle it from now to November? It'd be nice to see Cheney detained.

Just wondering.

Military PSYOPS strategy is and was to terrorize the Iraqi population into submission.
Posted by: thoughtcriminal on May 20, 2008 7:48 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
According to Cheney and Rumsfeld, "Shock and Awe" was going to "psychologically cow" the Iraqi people, and they'd also be "immensely greatful" to be relieved of Saddam.

Then came the Paul Bremer-led economic invasion of Iraq -a topic covered in great depth in Antonia Juhasz's Bush Agenda. The guy gave 100 orders, all intended to privatize every single Iraqi industry and put it in the hands of U.S. and British-led investors. The plan was to redo "The Saudi Arabian model" - create a dictatorial religious state where all the oil money would be recycled back to the United States - read John Perkins, Confessions of an Economic Hitman, for the Saudi story.

Bremer's blueprint was drafted by BearingPoint, Inc. - the economic version of Blackwater - and was a list of rules that would essentially turn Iraq into a foriegn colony of the American empire, exactly as America was a colony of Britain.

The main player here was the USAID - the U.S. Agency for International Development. USAID policies have always been supported by the Ford Foundation (Alternet and the IMI's #1 sponsor in 2005 was the Ford Foundation)"

Some of Bremer's more interesting orders included Order #17, which "granted full immunity from Iraqi laws and the Iraqi legal system to Coalition military forces and all foreign contractors, including private security firms. Non-Iraqi members of the of the military, corporations, corporate subcontractors and their employees cannot be held subject to Iraq's laws to this day" (Juhasz, pg206)

Others were Orders 80, 81 and 83, which "rewrote Iraq's patent, trademark, and copyright laws, just two months before the handover, to ensure guaranteed access and protections to foreign products and producers."

Then there is Order 39, the "Foreign Investment clause", which allowed for the privatization of all of Iraq's 192 government owned industries! Almost unreported in the U.S., this was a major spur to the insurgency.

Once the insurgency took off, the U.S. responded with the most evil and sadistic program every seen - the Abu G torture program, which was designed to crush the resistance of the Iraqi people. This is what the Saudi regularly do with their dissidents - throw them in jail and have them raped. That was the policy that Bremer, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Petraeus and others settled on. They just forgot to confiscate all the cameras first.

Another aspect of the "counterinsurgency program" was to carry out attacks against Shiites and Sunnis that were intended to split and weaken the insurgency. Mercenary forces under the unacknowledged command of senior military leaders played a large role here, as many vets have said.

In the end, it's all about the oil, and the economic agenda that is heavily supported by the left-wing press here in the United States. You won't see any coverage of the WTO or Doha here at Alternet - that would just upset their funders, who give Alternet and the IMI (who also runs the atrocious youth-brainwashing site Wiretap) over $1 million a year.

A staged circus is all that this is - like the ad says, "The Mix is the Message". This is probably why there is no mention of the economic agenda in this story.

Does anyone seriously believe that an "Independent Media Institute" that has the freaky Ford Foundation as their #1 sponsor, as well as the likes of the Sara Lee-based Nathan Cummings Foundation, or the pro-globalization Packard and Hewitt Foundations, is going to discuss issues that will upset their sponsors? Not too likely.

Seattle '99 is something that they want to be forgotten, not celebrated.

Not only did Cheney, Wolfowitz,Rumsfeld, and the rest of the PNAC crowd plot the Iraq war years before 2003, they did it for Israel. Many of this cabal cherry picked the intel to make a case for the war and worse had plotted to allign US foreign policy to that of a greater Israel (keeping the West bank) for years.

Impeach this entire administration and charge them for the war crimes they have committed. At least in doing what's right for a change we might regain some of the respect we've lost as a result of these incompetent morons. Unfortunately, we have no one in the political arena now who is willing to stand up for what's right. We have a bunch of losers running this country and it's time to replace them all. A VOTE FOR MCCAIN IS A VOTE FOR BUSH AND A VOTE TO CONTINUE THE STATUS QUO. We need an honest politician, who won't be corrupted by greed, but I wonder if are there any of those left anywhere? I doubt it seriously. We are doomed as a country. At least the military can TURN THEIR BACKS ON BUSH.

When our soldiers can't justify doing what's being asked of them, it's time to stop asking.
Victory has yet to be defined and in the meantime the chaos is spreading throughout the Mid-east. How many of the RIGHT people are we getting rid of? How can they tell? It's a free-for-all. The surge turned out to be B.S. and now 42,000 more soldiers are going to Iraq. What are they calling it, Surge II. Who's in charge these days? A good leader knows when to quit. Thanks, ANNA

He was in the National Guard, as a cook. He joined to pay for college- his parents are not rich, his mother is a nurse, his father has late-stage multiple sclerosis. Thanks to Rumsfeld's "transformation of the military" policies, cooking duties are now for-profit and instead of cooking food, he had to pick up a rifle. He was away from his wife and 3 kids for months, and came back a much more quiet person. We don't even know what he experienced, because he's requested that we don't ask.

It's a shame that Americans feel our military can act differently than any other military in the world..The sad thing is that war is war..it's been waged as such for as long as there has been war. Why does anyone think that all of a sudden the horrors of war changes!

Every person in this nation should know that when you send men and women to war they will act like they are at war. The Marine Corps is not the Peace Corps! They do what we as a nation want and expect them to do.

We just do not want to hear the dirty details!

In this entire (crushingly painful) account of the Soldiers' testimony, the most important summarizing comment made by one of them (I heard him say this) was his explicit call to impeach Bush! Yet yet yet -- nowhere have I read that he said this, nor the name of the veteran who said it. Had I not heard it myself, or not received the blurb from David Swanson of AfterDowningStreet.org, I'd never have known. NO mention of this at all in any media. How can we and Congress disregard these pleas for help? When a military person calls for impeachment of the commander in chief, how horrible and desperate must the situation be?

OK citizens -- it is time to stop the rant -- we all know the truth now -- and GET OFF THE COUCH and take some action. Flood the media with requests for coverage; flood every flippin elected official with calls, letters, e-mails, faxes ... do not let any of these folks rest! Flood FOX "news" with requests that they put Winter Soldiers on programs. And most of all, start demanding impeachment! No, it is NOT too late to impeach! January 20, 2009 is TOO LATE.

I'm director of the L.A. Area Impeachment Center, and this weekend we're organizing a nationwide freeway banner drop saying (to the effect): HONOR OUR VETERANS: IMPEACHBUSH.COM

Watch for them -- and form your own group and join in! We're staying with freeway footbridges - you can find them on GoogleEarth.

And another thing that just drives me up the wall is the method the DOD uses in reporting the deaths of our people serving in the military (and probably in the treatment of that death and the family members left behind).

This is the classification of deaths as "Non Combat Related" . This is absolutely absurd, as they would not be there to be killed if not for the combat.

Iraq War Merits Impeachment
Veterans For Peace Call for Congressional Action to
Remove George W. Bush from the Office of President
of the United States

Dear Member of Congress,
On the second anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, this letter is being sent on behalf of Veterans For Peace (VFP), a national organization of military veterans, to appeal for Congressional action to remove George W. Bush and Richard Cheney from the offices of President and Vice-President of the United States, respectively.
We do not make this call lightly and as former members of the U.S. armed forces, we take our responsibilities as citizens very seriously. For that reason we believe that when our government conducts a war of aggression on Iraq and commits a growing and appalling series of what must legally be considered war crimes and crimes against humanity in the execution of that war, it violates Article VI of the U.S. Constitution, the War Crimes Act of 1996 (18 U.S.C. § 2441), and numerous international treaties which are legally binding on our nation.
Seeing this happen, and understanding all too well the suffering it is causing and will continue to cause among our soldiers, their families, the people of Iraq, and the fabric of both our societies, we cannot stand by in complicit silence.
If you will read the relevant sections of the Nuremberg Principles, the
Geneva Conventions, and the other treaties this administration has violated (see attached), you will be left with only one conclusion: that this administration's war on Iraq, in addition to being increasingly unpopular among Americans, is an unmistakable violation of our Constitution and federal law which you have sworn to uphold.
In our system, the remedy for such high crimes is clear: this administration must be impeached. We urge you as sincerely and solemnly as possible, to begin impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Cheney in the House of Representatives and follow that with a trial in the Senate. In the name of humanity we beseech and direct you to act.

Most Urgently,
David Cline, President

Because we may not get a second chance. The bushies must be ARRESTED, preferably after they're out of power. They MUST be remanded without bail. We MUST try them using the very best legal minds available. John Edwards, John Kerrey, Ralph Nader, and Vincent Buliosi (sic), come to mind. Convictions for multiple capital crimes MUST be brought in. A jury of the very best people possible MUST be acquired for this purpose. After the trial(s) and conviction(s), the International Court at The Hague should be given their turn, unless they want to be included in trials here. If these things aren't done, and CORRECLY, without any possibility of being overturned on appeal, then we leave ourselves wide open for an encore a few years down the road.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - President George W. Bush has apologized to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and promised Prosecution of a U.S. soldier accused of using a copy of the Koran for target practice, Iraq said on Tuesday."

Senator McCain, As a life long republican that voted for Richard Nixon and served in the infantry in Viet Nam, I am extremely upset over our soldier being punished for shooting the 'koran'. A non recorded verbal reprimand should be enough. Was there a direct order against shooting the ‘koran’? I know of NO U.S. Law that prohibits this act. Our soldier has been relieved of duty with "prejudice" already and GW Bush wants more punishment. Sir, I take the following statement very seriously as I am communicating with an U.S. Senator that I have regarded as a War Hero, and possibly our next president. If you do not come out in defense of our soldier, I will vote for a black, jewish, lesbian peace & freedom candidate before I will vote republican. Further more I will actively campaign against the republican party. I want our soldier re-instated without anything more than a reprimand. I understand he can not be sent back to Iraq but he can be sent to Afghanistan. This soldier has gone to Iraq when we have deserters going to Canada. He has fought for us, now it’s time to fight for him! I was insulted that an American Officer would kiss the ‘koran’ and present it to a bunch that would not have a second thought about shooting the Bible. Viet Nam Vets were screwed, are the Iraqi Vets to be screwed also?

Very Sincere,
name included in e-mail to McCain
I served as an
Infantry Sergeant
E co 2/8 1st Cav
Viet Nam 71-72

I Met This Kid At a Party - He Didn't Look Much Older Than My Son

He had served in what used to be called the SAS - and went in before the war had officially started.

He survived without a scratch and was rightly very proud of the exceedingly professional job that he had done.

But I was talking to him for about 30 minutes, and then he literally broke down in tears and was sobbing inconsolably - right in the middle of this party.

This guy was one of the elite of The British Army - and whilst he survived without a physical scratch - he will have to live with the mental scars for the rest of his life.

The real problem was that he knew it wasn't a just war and that the people he killed were completely innocent human beings - and that he was the aggressor and invader.

Despite being completely opposed to the war, and one of the Millions who marched against it, I had tremendous respect for this British Soldier.

It was not his fault - and it could quite easily have been my Son in his position.

for service. You can't feel too sorry for people who weren't drafted against their will.
