War on Iraq

Two of Seven Soldiers Who Wrote 'NYT' Op-Ed Die in Iraq

By Greg Mitchell, Editor & Publisher. Posted September 12, 2007.

They were at the tail-end of their deployments.

The Op-Ed by seven active duty U.S. soldiers in Iraq questioning the war drew international attention just three weeks ago. Now two of the seven are dead.

Sgt. Omar Mora and Sgt. Yance Gray died Monday in a vehicle accident in western Baghdad, two of seven U.S. troops killed in the incident which was reported just as Gen. David Petraeus was about to report to Congress on progress in the "surge." The names have just been released.

Gen. Petraeus was questioned about the message of the op-ed in testimony before a Senate committee yesterday.

The controversial Times column on Aug. 19 was called "The War As We Saw It," and expressed skepticism about American gains in Iraq. "To believe that Americans, with an occupying force that long ago outlived its reluctant welcome, can win over a recalcitrant local population and win this counterinsurgency is far-fetched," the group wrote.

It closed: "We need not talk about our morale. As committed soldiers, we will see this mission through."

Mora, 28, hailed from Texas City, Texas, and was a native of Ecuador, who had just become a U.S. citizen. He was due to leave Iraq in November and leaves behind a wife and daughter. Gray, 26, had lived in Ismay, Montana, and is also survived by a wife and infant daughter.

The accident in Iraq occurred when a cargo truck the men were riding in overturned.

One of the other five authors of the Times piece, Staff Sergeant Jeremy Murphy, an Army Ranger and reconnaissance team leader, was shot in the head while the article was being written. He was expected to survive after being flown to a military hospital in the United States.

Digg!

"While the seven soldiers were composing their article, one of them, Staff Sgt. Jeremy A. Murphy, was shot in the head."
==========
In less than than two weeks after daring to criticize Bush's war polices, TWO of the seven soldiers are dead and a THIRD soldier from the group is in the hospital after being shot in the head?? If I were one of the four remaining, non-injured soldiers...I'd be REALLY scared right now.

Jefferson said, "the tree of liberty must be nourished from time to time with blood" --- and a good start would be 'cutting down' the bush that is strangling it.

Wow, that breaks my heart. They were brave- did you see the last sentence? My cousin is in Iraq right now, he has 3 kids and his father is dying of multiple sclerosis. This insanity has to end. Impeach.

Who will they "off" next?

To Senator Chuck Hagel's credit during the recent Iraq debacle hearing, he had mentioned to General Patreaus that the ground pounders in Iraq sees things much differently than the flowery perspectives's Patreaus and his ilk had been spewing.

Will Chuck Hagel encounter a plane accident????

During the last election, Gen Patraeus was shilling for the futile republicans proclaiming that peace is at hand in Iraq and everything is going well. Now the general says US troops may have to be in Iraq for a very long time. Confusing, eh??

How long before we read that this was a "friendly fire" incident?

Didn't we steal Saddam's country and execute him for killing off his opponents? Did the American people really agree to exchange governments with Iraq - they get the democracy and we get the dictator?

Soldiers die! They get blown up. They get shot. They get burnt and melted by napalm. They roll their trucks. They shoot themselves. They rape and murder innocent civilians.

What's the big deal?

We're all part of a war system. We have been for thousands of years. Some people like to fight and kill and rape and get killed. Some people like to chill out. Whatever floats your boat! If you don't want to go and have fun in a war (then realise it's not much fun) - don't go!

Praise them. Remember Lt. Watada. He lead the way, and the"system" buried him behind a desk job!

Yup, they wouldn't let it go to court because the "System" would lose and that would have been the undoing of the lie and the truth would have rolled out like a convoy of truckers heading to Washington.

Praise the real heroes of peace making.
Petraeus is only supproting the "piece" making of heros.

If this country (of voting people) supports any of the fasicist game planners, they are responsible far aiding and abetting the Bush CO,'s crimes against humanity.

Just bring 911 truth to the top of the heap and all will be revealed. The road to hell is paved with good intensions (of an evil neoConJob white wash).

Grieving in Marin

This news is very, very disturbing. Where is the in-depth reporting and analysis to determine the exact circumstances of the "vehicle accident" that took the lives of Sgt. Omar Mora and Sgt. Yance Gray? Who serviced the cargo truck vehicle? When was it serviced? Who used the vehicle last? For what purpose was the vehicle on the road? Who gave orders for the two men to be in the vehicle at that particular time? What were the circumstances surrounding the "accident?" Was it a roadside bomb? If so, why were these two men sent out into a danger zone at a time when they should have been protected prior to Sgt. Imar Mora leaving Iraq? No military leader would send men, anticipating their leave, into a dangerous situation. Unless, of course, they bought into a code of honor outside of the US military, i.e., the neoconservative Republican "do-as-I-say or-die" business agenda.

This news item is the last straw for me. Where is the media when we need it most?

Lies and more lies

It's enough to make anyone puke to have to listen to the lies on TV - all over the screen on every channel! - with our people in the service and our wounded veterans parroting the lies George Bush about Iraq and 9-11. He's already admitted there were no WMDs in Iraq and that Hussein had nothing to do with 01--, and they're still using that hoary old lie to con the unaware! I wonder what bribes or threats were used? "We'll get you some good artificial legs"? "We'll help you pay your rent"? Maybe, "Your four year wait for treatment at the VA will be reduced to a week"? DAMN them, it ought to be illegal to like like that! But the GAO already ruled years ago that it's up to the people to decide if they're being lied to or not, and isn't the government's responsibility.

Oh, for you skeptics:
