War on Iraq

Audio Slideshow: From Washington, DC with Peace

By Nina Berman, AlterNet. Posted January 29, 2007.

Hundreds of thousands of people marched on Washington this Saturday to protest the war. Experience it yourself with imagery and sounds captured by photojournalist Nina Berman.

In the first anti-war protest since the Democrats assumed power in Congress, a huge crowd exceeding organizer expectations of 100,000, marched on Washington D.C. demanding an immediate pullout of American troops from Iraq. With chants of "impeach Bush" and "pull out now," the crowd marched from the Mall, past the Supreme Court and around Congress.

Below is a multimedia experience of the march, including sound from Anthony Reshawn, a Maryland labor organizer; actors Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon; actress Jane Fonda -- who gave her first speech at an antiwar march in 34 years. Few House members and no Senators were present to comment.

BIG MEDIA WAS QUIET AND...

Doesn't that tell you just how much they have been "bought and told"???

I searched and searched the web on Saturday for coverage. Just a scanty and well repeated AP article and lots of repeat Jane Fonda (yes, I'm glad she was there) headlines and "Tens of Thousands" repeats on the number of attendees. UGH! What a sad state of American Media.

But where was "alternative" media???? Just about zero.
Alternet=not until much, much later and way, WAY too little
Democracy Now=wait until Monday
United For Peace=No website update
Truthout=nothing
Other Indy sites=not much at all

With the immediacy of the internet, where was the coverage? Am I missing something major here? We have to find better ways to get the word out. We MUST reach millions, fast, thoroughly, and in a responsive way. Please, tell me where I should have looked.

The Happening in DC, January 27, 2007
eileen fleming

On a crisp cool day in Washington, DC on January 27, 2007 history was made.

The Capital was completely encircled by hundreds of thousands of thoughtful, concerned and committed peace and justice activists who rose up to demand Congress DO SOMETHING to bring our troops home. Young and old patriotic Americans had also come together to raise awareness that security, peace and justice, can only happen, when there is an end to all war and occupations.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters responded to this reporters question regarding the issue of divestment from Israel to help bring an end to the 40th year of the occupation of Palestine by stating, "This war in Iraq helps us understand we can no longer ignore what is happening in Israel Palestine; it is all connected in the Middle East and we must look at everything!"

Rabbi Lerner reminded the over 1,400 peace and justice member groups and hundreds of thousands of individuals who had traveled from as far as Albuquerque to Vermont, Seattle to Florida and all points in between, that we Americans belong to the one human family of six billion people and that over three billion of us exist on less than $2.00 a day.

Over 800 of the patriotic peace and justice activists will remain in DC and descend on Congress on January 29th to state the only way to truly support our troops is to bring them home.

Representatives of Gold Star Families for Peace, Veterans for Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War shared the stage and inflamed the crowd, "Men and women are coming home from Iraq and they are pissed off! Not one word in Bush's State of The Union address even mentioned the veterans!"

Activist and Actress Susan Sarandon quoted the statistics that one in three homeless people in America are veterans. That one in four suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and the average wait for them to see a Doctor is two to three months for there is only one Doctor for every 500 veterans. There are currently 53,000 wounded veterans and returning veterans have a 70% divorce rate. Sarandon also pointed out that 65 billion dollars of benefits for veterans have been cut by this Administration and not a word was mentioned in the SOUA and not one presidential hopeful has yet commented upon this.

Tim Robbins added that, "I just spoke with a woman whose 20 year old brother is being sent to Iraq with only two weeks of training instead of the usual twelve."

Raed Jarrar, Iraq Project Director of Global Exchange informed the engaged crowd, "The only hope to end the Iraqi violence is to end the occupation! I am one half Sunni and one half Shia and I am telling you that both secular and religious Iraqis agree that we want our county back! We want the occupation to end, NOW! Sunni's and Shia's have lived together for a thousand years and all Bush accomplished was to build a new dictatorship!"

Co-chair of the Progressive Caucus, Congresswomen Lynn Woolsey received thunderous applause by stating, "It is not about winning or losing; it is about doing the right thing! Everyone knows this except the President! You know what they say is the definition of insanity; persisting in the same behavior and expecting a different result. We don't need any more study groups, we need HR 508 the Bring Our Troops Home and Iraqi Sovereignty Bill which will bring our troops home and end the occupation in six months. Tell your representatives to pass HR 508!"

Arab American, Nicholas Mouracade flew from Florida because, "I love America and I served in the Air Force during Vietnam. And now my nephew is in the 82nd Airborne Division and all he and his unit do is guard the oil fields. I'd like to know whose making the money on the 2.5 million barrels of oil being produced every day in Iraq."

So would the multitudes, who in the spirit of Emma Goldman [who would only join a revolution if she could dance] were led in song and chant by the sisters and brothers of emmasrevolution.com : "Who lies? Who dies? Who pays? Who profits?"

John Dowell, USMC Retired Captain and Tiger Shark UAV Pilot informed this reporter, "In the last few months I have made more money than I ever have in my entire life. I have been working as a civilian contractor flying UAV's for a private company and the money is humongous. But, it is your money for every person born today begins life with a $30,000 debt because of this war. We got here because we the people have not been paying attention. But, it's not too late, we can do something and it's time for a revolution!"

Yesterday, the Coordinator of United for Peace and Justice announced that

We the people for Peace and Justice

Were half a million strong in the streets of DC on 1/27/07.

And that,

Over 1,000 concerned patriotic Americans from 48 states attended yesterday's Lobby Day Networking and Preparation Day.

Over 2,000 patriotic citizens are expected to be in the halls and offices of Congress lobbying for an END to WAR and OCCUPATION today.

Politicians often fail to see the light,

But,

They can-and will-

Very pathetic coverage of an important event in Washington

I spent a total of 48 hours traveling on a cramped and smelly bus to attend the march, and, when I returned home I wanted to read about the event, but, to no avail - there was next zero coverage. I too, felt the coverage by the media was almost non-existent. I send $$$$ to these alternative organizations on a regular basis and, would like to think they would spend a little of that money to promote and cover such a big event. Lots of people sacrificed time, effort, and money to attend the Washington rally/march. We want our voices heard and they were not! When I marched during the Vietnam War there was certainly more coverage even at tsuch a critical time in history. Shame on the media for their lack of support. From my vantage point there were close to 500 thousand people w/a message to deliver and the media let us down. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

Bloggers Who Criticize Government May Face Prison
Bill would allow rounding up and imprisoning of non-registered political writers

Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Thursday, January 18, 2007

You'd be forgiven for thinking that it was some new restriction on free speech in Communist China. But it isn't. The U.S. Government wants to force bloggers and online grassroots activists to register and regularly report their activities to Congress in the latest astounding attack on the internet and the First Amendment.

Richard A. Viguerie, Chairman of GrassrootsFreedom.com, a website dedicated to fighting efforts to silence grassroots movements, states:

"Section 220 of S. 1, the lobbying reform bill currently before the Senate, would require grassroots causes, even bloggers, who communicate to 500 or more members of the public on policy matters, to register and report quarterly to Congress the same as the big K Street lobbyists. Section 220 would amend existing lobbying reporting law by creating the most expansive intrusion on First Amendment rights ever. For the first time in history, critics of Congress will need to register and report with Congress itself."

In other words Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats may redefine the meaning of lobbying in order that political communications to and even between citizens falls under the same legislation.

Under current law any 'lobbyist" who 'knowingly and willingly fails to file or report." quarterly to the government faces criminal charges including a possible jail term of up to one year.

The amendment is currently on hold.

just to let you know, "huge anti-war protest in washington" was the top listing on my google news page. which surprised me, as there was hardly a murmur when I went to washington to march before the war in 2003!!
