War on Iraq

The Growing Iraq Resistance Movement in the U.S. Military

By Peter Laufer, AlterNet. Posted September 30, 2006.

One of the biggest 'pockets of resistance' to the war in Iraq is U.S. soldiers who refuse to fight on moral and ethical grounds.

On Sept. 26, Peter Laufer, author of, "Mission Rejected: U.S. Soldiers Who Say No to Iraq" (Chelsea Green, 2006) spoke at Rep. Lynn Woolsey's (D-Calif.) Iraq forum, "The Mounting Costs of the U.S. Military Occupation of Iraq and Lost Opportunities," on the growing number of American soldiers turning against the U.S. military mission in Iraq on moral and ethical grounds. The following is the text of his testimony.

Congresswoman Woolsey, thank you for this opportunity to speak about a critical matter I've been studying. What I want to share with you are the thoughts and experiences of some of the brave men and women I've met over the past year. It has been an honor for me to meet these soldiers, Americans on the front lines of what may be their most important battle: a fight for our country's soul.

One of the things that's surprised me most as I returned from travels around the U.S., up to Canada, and over to Germany talking with soldiers opposed to the Iraq war is how few civilians know about the growing resistance within the military to Bush policy in Iraq.

Over and over, when people asked me what I was working on and I told them of the collected stories of opposition, I heard comments like "There are soldiers against the war? I didn't know that."

The tragedy of civilian deaths in Iraq is devastating. U.S. troops assigned to the kind of duty that leaves innocent civilians damaged and destroyed are also victims. The escalating number of troops returning from the war suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is proof.

One soldier after another told me about their being devastated by orders that put them in the position of disobeying, or of shooting what they feared were noncombatants.

These soldier's stories are critical to hear. Their credibility cannot be impugned. They volunteered for the military. They've seen it from the inside.

Consider Darrell Anderson. I met with him in Toronto. He deserted after fighting in Iraq rather than face another deployment there.

In addition to taking shrapnel from a roadside bomb -- an injury that earned him a Purple Heart -- Darrell told me he often found himself in firefights.

Darrel described a Baghdad street battle that scarred him -- and scared him about himself. He was in an armored vehicle. Other soldiers were riding on the outside, when it came under attack from an enemy armed with rocket-propelled grenades. One of the soldiers riding outside was hit and injured severely. Darrell told me the scene still returns to him in the nightmares he suffers every night. "I look at him and he is bleeding everywhere. He's spitting up blood." Someone had to take his place on the outside, Darrell realized. "Me, I'm gung-ho. I go up there. There're explosions. They tell us if you're under attack, you open fire on anybody in the streets. They say they're no longer innocent if they're there. I take my weapon and I find someone running. I point and I pull my trigger, but my weapon is still on safe."

By the time Darrell clicked it over to fire, he realized he was about to shoot a kid who was running away from the violence, a kid he was by then sure was not part of the battle. But what was most traumatic for him were his own emotions. "I'm angry. My buddy is dying. I just want to kill." He told me he realized then he had become a different man, changed by the pathology of war and the suffering of the innocents. "When I first got there, I was disgusted with my fellow soldiers. But now I'm just the same. I will kill innocent people, because I'm not the person I was when I got there." The attack ebbed, and Darrell survived it, as did the running boy.

A timely example of how the war is tearing at the conscience of the troops came in an email I received the other day from a conflicted soldier. He is an army reservist, a counterintelligence agent who served in Afghanistan, where he was awarded two Bronze Star medals for his valor.

"My unit may be deploying to Iraq in January, and I am contemplating not going," he wrote. "This is somewhat complicated by not being a conscientious objector, which limits my options." This reservist requested my assistance steering him toward sources that can provide him with credible information about the alternatives open to him and the ramifications of refusing orders.

THE F&*KING USA is in it....thats whats wrong with Iraq...Dead right about killing for the rich to be more wealthy...more than all your dreams....greater than all your imaginings...i am so glad that one soldier has not killed because his weapon was on safe.....god I know that feeling...but how do theywho have killed with such rules of engagement, live with themselves...the answer is many cannot...have a good long think about the man sitting opposite you enjoying the breakfast you have cooked so lovingly for him........he affectionately pats his children sitting around him.......is he a butcher from Iraq...was he a part of a so called professional army on a mission of honour...........now you know the real reason why returned service personel don't talk about the wars.........the shame..and the horror............shame on the USA...shame on it's people..what has been inflicted on Iraq is in no way any part, large or small..."a greater good" it just isn't ..in anyones language...is it....

Regards Captain

PS By the way... Dissention within the ranks is just that....the foot soldier is not alone..............the generals are returning to Rome.

I can only hope that the rebellion against the war on the part of the US GI grows. What the hell are we there for anyhow? What has been gained? Terrorism is only worse now than before the invasion. Isn't the reporting on this the reason that the Bush Administration closed down the NCTC one year after the US invaded Iraq and two decades after the Center was first opened. We haven't made the world safer by these means but more dangerous. We now need the US military rank and file to tell it like it is.

Who do you worship in a police state?? God bless Amerika. The police, of course. Who do the police protect the best. Themselves and the rich. Rigged capitalism, terrorism, and many isms are created by the rich, with the police as their guard dogs. The mainstream is so totally oblivious, which is why they gladly send their unfortunate sons, and tie the yellow ribbon around the old oak tree, and the suv too. They so avidly support the thing, not knowing the 'thing' does not support them, and never did. It won't get figured out until America has its own Bolshevik Revolution.

We the American People must say to Cheney/Bush: End this Iraq war which is causing so much pain, suffering and death. End the occupation for it is causing terror in Iraq and elsewhere. Bring the troops home for they are suffering death and physical injury and psychological injury. End the occupation for it is increasing terror instead of decreasing it. End the occupation now for every death/injury in Iraq is a war crime. End the occupation now for it only magnifies the extent of your war crimes guilt. End the occupation now for every death there means that you have once again broken a religious commandment, an international law and the USA constitution. Shame will be yours forever in history.

My heart bleeds for these soldiers, and I salute their courage.

While those outside the country can't vote, their friends and relatives can. Yes, I know the Repubs will attempt to Diebold this election too, but our best weapon (for now) is a landslide of ballots rejecting them and putting in place a Congress that will subpoena and investigate.

Write all the comments you want between now & November 7, but PLEASE get friends & family out to the polls to begin the turn-around of this disaster.

As a committed Christian of The Beatitudes and investigative journalist myself, one of my driving passions is writing about how Bush has taken my Brother, My Teacher, My Lover and misused him to get elected.

I feel like the Magdelena at the empty tomb, for I cannot find Christ in Bush's actions and rhetoric.

As a candidate Bush claimed his favorite Philosopher was Christ.

As a President, Bush has ignored and denied the philosophy:

Thomas Jefferson weeded out the miracle stories from the gospels and clarified the teachings of Christ in

The Jefferson Bible:
The Life and MORALS of Jesus of Nazareth

1. Be just: justice comes from virtue which comes from the heart.

2. Treat people the way we want to be treated.

3. Always work for PEACEFUL resolutions, even to the point of returning violence with COMPASSION.

4. Consider valuable the things that have no material value.

5. Do not judge others.

6. Do not bear grudges.

7. Be modest and unpretentious.

8. Give out of true generosity, not because we expect to be repaid.

9. Being true to one's self is more important than being loyal to one's family...those who think they know the most are the most ignorant......

"Soon after I had published the pamphlet "Common Sense" [on Feb. 14, 1776] in America, I saw the exceeding probability that a revolution in the system of government would be followed by a revolution in the system of religion... The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion."-Tom Paine

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed.

That's how it goes - everybody knows...

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died...

Foley is not the worse thing that can happen to the Republicans. Let them lie and fight amoungst themselves. We must keep the heat on and force them to deal with Iraq. Why The Rebellion?

Capitalism’s contradictory impulses have begun bumping into each other. It’s happening in the national debate on immigration and it happened in the recent Dubai Ports World controversy. Profits are the system’s lifeblood so the ruling class craves an immigrant guest worker program and the UEA’s petrodollars but the rabid anti-immigrant and anti-Arab sentiment coursing through U.S. society has so far blocked their designs. Racism and xenophobia and every other tactic of division have been the guarded carefully by capitalism with good reason. Unity of the working class is the only potentially deadly threat to this system. White supremacy, Black Nationalism, religious fundamentalism, sexism, homophobia, and all the crackpot schemes and the nihilistic cults of the bourgeoisie, like al-Qaeda, are dead ends for all of us who work. Share class-conscious thought with others, especially our working class sons and daughters in the US and other militaries, to help them better understand their growing unease with being little more than rich men's cannon fodder. The Russian military was in much the same situation in the middle of WWI and they turned their weapons around in 1917.

I am not a citizen of Canada, but am a Veteran who supports the idea of Canada giving refuge to those trapped by the BushCo War Machine. Could someone set up a petition site where US veterans and others could petition the Canadian Government to allow soldiers and marines the chance to get political refuge in Canada?

I think their chances of asylum would be improved by a large petition of US veterans and regular citizens publicly supporting them.

The desensitization is working. Oh well, another day in Iraq, another 5 or 6 US service personnel killed, 20 or 30 wounded. Does not even make the news, it is no longer newsworthy per FOX and MSNBC. This is the new America. What is newsworthy, let's see: oh, Katie is so cute on her new news program, isn't she a good replacement for Dan Rather?? FOX says we don't care anymore, so we should not care anymore.

I have been expecting wholesale desertions all along. When this happens we can expect draft talk to go up in smoke. Most people being drafted would ignore the phony call to duty. The desertion problem would start before any uniforms are ordered from the factory. The Bush administration, though stupid in many ways would realize that this domestic problem would be one that they would not want to get involved in.

I agree we should leave Iraq now but keep in mind I could care less about the Iraqi people. What do you think will happen to Iraq if we leave now? The Sunnis, The Shiites and the kurds will murder each other. There will be a decade of civil war, Tens if not hundreds of thousands of people will die, people will go with out food, medicine or any type of infrastructure. I’m ready to leave today.

I'm sending this message to all of my friends, relatives, and everyone else I have an e-mail address for. If it strikes a chord, please consider doing the same!

Do you love America?
Join us on October 5th to defend her!

Today, America is threatened as never before. Her soul is being twisted and tortured by people who have sworn to preserve, protect, and defend her Constitution. To manifest their dark vision of America, these people have committed a wide range of crimes against humanity, the world, and the American People. These crimes include launching a war of aggression, torturing prisoners, warrantless wiretapping, establishing secret prisons, war profiteering, imprisoning American citizens without trial, and many, many more. Last week, Congress passed a new law which retroactively pardons the administration for many of these crimes. Even worse, this law makes it a crime to take it to court, and authorizes the President to summarily arrest and indefinitely detain American citizens, effectively gutting the Bill of Rights.

These things are not what America stands for.
This is not what our forefathers struggled so valiantly to build.
It is not the legacy we want to leave to our children.

Our leaders tell us that, by committing these crimes, they are making us safer. This is incorrect.

In the name of this little temporary safety, you and I are sacrificing our most cherished freedoms and our most noble ideals. The United States of America was founded on the dream of Liberty and Justice for All. As we allow ourselves to be turned away from this dream, we will also turn away from the blessings that Provenance has bestowed upon us. As we commit atrocities, our enemies multiply, and our friends turn away.

We all know where the path of hatred, fear, and violence leads.

It is time for a change.
It is time to be counted.

On Thursday, October 5, millions of concerned Americans will join together. With one strong, clear voice, we will demand truth, accountability, and transparency from our leaders, the people we have selected to represent us.

Join us!

Help us to make America the shining example of goodness we all know she can be. Help us to restore her honor, truth, tolerance, kindness, and joy. There are a lot of ways you can help:

Attend a local demonstration. Add your voice to the call for change!
Get on the air. Show the entire world the scope of our resolve.
If you own or manage a business, close it for the day.
Stay home from work or school. Ask your co-workers or classmates to do the same.
Wear a black armband to show your solidarity with those demanding change.
Fly your flag upside-down to show your distress.
Ask your family, friends, neighbors, and complete strangers to join the call.

If you're shy, or scared, there are still some important things you can do to help:

Buy nothing. Show that We, the People, ultimately control the power of the purse.
Fast, and Pray or Meditate. Ask God to help us to restore America to a land of the People, by the People, and for the People.
Express gratitude for all of the wonderful things that America means to you.
Envision your ideal of the perfect America. Imagine what it would feel like to live there.

Above all, get creative, stay positive, and have fun! America is a land of infinite possibilities, filled with generous, kind, and caring people. Find your voice, in your way, and let it sing out for change.

The time to act is NOW! Please help spread this message as widely as possible.

Let's make October 5 a day to remember forever!

Sincerely,

An American

America may have been doomed from the very begining, but from the year 1861 it was CERTAIN! It was only a matter of time! Not "if" but WHEN! The fact is that Americas current leadership finally at the begining of the 21's century realized, that the collapse of the Soviet Union wasn't actually going to save them. It saved the world from a nuclear holocaust, but in Americas case it only brought more time. 20-years at best. You see, JUDGMENT DAY will be soon at hand! The current leadership(made of BOTH Democrats and Republicans)realized, that 9/11 wasn't enough to strategically unite the American people. Only buy more time. Maybe 10-years at best. Bush and his buddies descidet to "take the money and run" This Iraq war is nothing more then an illusion! These people are SMART! They realize, that the system isn't working, wont work, and hasn't worked in a LONG TIME! So the only thing they can do is to either sit down and see it all fall apart, or try to take advantage of it, which is exactly what there doing right now! They dont care a crap about Saddam or the Iraqi people! This was was all about training there very own personal mercenary military. It's not supposed to be used outside(they've got minuteman missiles for that)but INSIDE Americas borders! That what it's designed for, but it needs the right training and funding, wich is why they launched this war. Iraq is a training ground for civil war 2, the mother of all battles!!!

The news that makes it out of Iraq is monitored. Meaning, we only see what they want us to see. In the name of "security." Security from what, the TRUTH???

Only certain parts of the war report were declasified. Just those have already confirmed what people suspected all along. I wonder what's concealed in the full classified report, and why certain individuals don't want us seeing it...

President Bush beckons us to "not waver" and to "stay the course." We must "win the battle in Iraq." Could the president be so kind as to define "win?" When can we declare "victory!" so that our soldiers can come home? No WMD. Hussein is in custody. (Not to mention he was just a sitting duck in hiding. Some "threat" to America, eh Mr. Bush?) What next? It seems our "goal" in Iraq has been an ever-moving target.

They say Mr. Hussein raped and slaughtered his own men, women and children. That that was the reason we were in Iraq. Could it be an irony we're doing precisely that in keeping our men and women in a war that shouldn't have been declared in the first place?

How long will it be? How many more soldiers must die to finally declare the 2nd Vietnam? It's the second Vietnam. It's only a matter time and more soldiers until our government finally has the gall to own up and admit it.

God sees all, and knows all. And shit floats. Oh for the day when we all see the fools we were made to be...

Men whose moral development has never matured beyond the law and order stage, tend to think it's okay to rape, torture, and kill, as long as their Hitler says it is.

I agree that we have no place in Iraq. But I think that the soldiers that participated in the war did so on their own free will. They were not forced to join the military. They chose to. I think that many of these comments are mindless anti-Bush propaganda. GEORGE BUSH DID NOT FORCE ANYBODY TO JOIN THE MILITARY. Was it ever a mystery that war is horrible and that the average person could not stand to witness it first hand (without loosing their sanity)? Were people considering military duty not aware of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? That being said I think that soldiers should work to bring this to the public's attention. If they are morally opposed to the war then they should have the right not to go.

Again, I don't support the Bush administration... but I think you guys should start thinking for yourselves instead of following this "everything related to Bush is evil" propaganda.

Defend your country when it's called for
Yes I'm sure that most of the soldiers who sign up for duty have some idea what it is all about, other than just the wonderful things they see on the recruitment propaganda. I feel sympathy towards the ones who ended up in Iraq and totally confused on what is happening with them.To begin with America has no business to be in there ,no one called them in, and 911 was just a good reason to go after their oils resources. None of the terrorist who was behind the plot of crashing the plains in to the world trade center were in Iraq. You don't have to be a soldier or a killing machine to defend your country if its under attack, only do what any honest country man would do defend it to any cost, but Iraq wasn't going to attack America There is a way to sacrifice your life for your country with dignity and be a proud of you believes, but not by reaping, killing innocent woman and children, or playing soccer with human heads for that matter.I don't blame the soldiers getting turned off and run away from the phony mission they were sent on, in the first place. Perhaps Sadam was a terrible person and it was the responsibility of the Iraqi's to change that just like many other country does when they cannot live with the un just misery of life created for them by the government.I hope that the American people realize the trouble they are getting them self's in by what they done with the invasion of Iraq on the false pretend of WMD.There are North Korea, Iran they not hiding their WMD but showing it off and US cant do a thing about it because they are all ready in trouble and a lot of pressure from the rest of the world, for invading the country they were asked by the UN not to. I feel bad for the American people because I have many good friends among them and I wont hold it against them that they just fallowing their leader just like sheep does. If it was up to me I would grant refugee status in Canada for U.S. military person, who's no longer be able to tolerate such seen as in the case of Joshua Key he is a much stronger soldier in my eyes than they one doing all the disgusting un necessary killing.
