War on Iraq

Bush's Tactics Aid the Terrorists

By Matthew Stannard, San Francisco Chronicle. Posted September 7, 2006.

Since 9/11, the White House has relentlessly manipulated public opinion by hyping the war on terror. But the main result is a terrified public -- which may have been the point all along.

With the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks fast approaching, President Bush took to the podium Tuesday to speak to Americans about his administration's global war on terror.

Three things can be expected from Bush's speech, according to a new study by three Columbia University researchers: The media will repeat the president's remarks. Public fear of terrorism will increase. And the president's poll numbers will rise.

Those have been the effects of presidential pronouncements on terrorism since the Sept. 11 attacks, according to political scientists Brigitte Nacos, Yaeli Bloch-Elkon and Robert Shapiro, in a report prepared for this month's annual meeting of the American Political Science Association.

"These are interesting findings, and confirm what many of us had suspected," said Mark Juergensmeyer, director of Global and International Studies at U.C. Santa Barbara, who reviewed the research at the request of The Chronicle.

"This public panic benefits the terrorists whose work is made easier by an overactive government response that magnifies their efforts. In an odd way this puts the government and the terrorists in league with one another," he said. "The main loser, alas, is the terrified public."

The Columbia researchers looked at past scholarship on the subject and a new review of terror threats, official warnings and the coverage of both by the mass media since 2001, seeking to close what Nacos called a gap in research of how terrorists try to achieve their goals of fomenting fear, not only through attack but by threatening attack.

"The real new thing here is the mere threat, heavily mass mediated, achieves at least part of what actual terrorism achieves," Nacos said. "(Terrorists) want to intimidate, they want to spread fear and anxiety, and they want to take influence through the public on government officials."

Much of the Columbia team's research focused on the press -- especially the television media -- and how it reacted to threats of terrorism.

"Any actual threat message -- a tape by bin Laden or al-Zawahiri or an alert -- results in a great deal of messages in the media," Nacos said. "People comment on it, they analyze it ... the administration, experts in the field, including myself."

That approach magnifies the sense of threat by repetition, Nacos said. And while increases in terror alerts always made the top of the news on the three major networks, decreases tended to be buried and far less time was devoted to them -- 1 minute, 34 seconds on average for a national alert being lowered, compared with 5 minutes, 20 seconds when the alert was raised.

"The threat alone brings them a great deal of media coverage, and the public takes notice -- we've shown that the threat perception by the public increases," Nacos said.

Officials in government and law enforcement also can have an effect on the public's perception of terror risk when their statements are magnified by the media.

In February 2003, for example, the percentage of people saying they were very worried about a terror attack "soon" stood at 18 percent. One month later, after the alert had been raised and lowered, it stood at 34 percent.

The official with the greatest ability to shift opinion on terrorism, the researchers found, is Bush, whose statements in the media about terrorism correlated highly with increases in the public's perception of terrorism as a major national problem -- and with increases in his approval ratings.

The Bushies will say anything and do anything to get their backers reelected, so the truth be damned and dissed all the way to victory in November. But the more they lie the more the public knows that they are lying and, hopefully, the congenital and compulsive liers will be crushed in November. Democrats need to pounce on each and every lie and make sure the people know that they are being fed Bullshit by the Bushies. Pounce on them like a cat and scratch them to death politically.

Alternet should be more scrupulous in their choice of advertising. The "ad by Google" for this article is for the book "The Middle East in Bible Prophecy."

Great!

I hardly takes a Columbia study to tell us what is manisfestly obvious. Let me be clear: I don't feel smug, but I am deeply concernced that what ought to be common sense is given so much attention (and so late) in one of the most progressive news sources in the country. The level of confusion (on the part of the population) that this fact (that people are blind to political truisims) brings to bear makes me terribly sad.

Hook, Line and Stinker

The big question before us is this: Are the American people going to swallow the First Fool's bullshit yet again? Given their history and their absolute genius (idiot savant?) for voting against their own, vital interests, anything is possible. But I'm enough of a cock-eyed optimist to believe that maybe, just maybe they are begining to awaken from the deep, deep coma that thay've been snoozing under since that day, over a quarter of a century ago, when they sent a feeble-minded, failed "B" movie actor by the name of Ronald Reagan to the White House.

Will they swallow the bait? Who knows? Nothing - and I mean nothing done by the pathetic fools that I so laughingly refer to as "my fellow countrymen" surprises me anymore. If so many of them are capable of sending the likes of a half-witted frat boy like Bush to the White House then the skies're the limit, Bubbah!

One thing is certain - and it's a joyous sight to behold - this administration is imploding; Coming apart at the seams and (Oh! Jimminy Crickets) I could't be happier. It'll take a few years, but I am convinced, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that the major players in this hideous drama that has so seriously (Permanently?) damaged our once-great country (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld) will be going to prison for the rest of their fucking lives.

Why do you think that the GOP's latest talking point is, "If the democrats take back the congress they'll impeach the president"! Why? Hmm! Call it a hunch but I've got a sneaking suspicion that there just might be evidence - a shit load of evidence to impeach, prosecute and imprison the hideous little bastard. And when that day comes, we must remember that, as a chief executive who was, in fact, a criminal, committing one felony after another, all of his appointees to the Supreme Court should be rendered null and void.

If the republicans are allowed to retain control of either house of congress in November, wave bye bye to your republic, children.

Pray for peace.

Our New National Motto: "WE WILL NOT FEAR"!

Fear is one way to get the people to submitt and surrender to authorities. The US Government don't give a damn about the American People. Like i said earlier in a post: "The Polititions will kiss our a$$ for votes but when they get into office they spit on us". We have never been so divided as a nation as far as i know. Our government will NOT take care of you nor protect you. (open borders give you a clue on "national security)? It's up to the American People to live together and help each other out as much as possible. This has been the "Divided States Of America" for quite awhile. "A house divided by itself will not stand" and this includes a nation. We need to be United again. "Our" country is falling apart in every corner in this nation. Is this what we want? We need to care enough to do something about everything. All our Government wants is "total power and total controll". We need to rise a a nation again or else we are going to fall and we won't be able to get back up again. We are at war with Islam who referrs the US as "The Great Satin" and vows our destruction and they also vows to "Wipe Israel Off The Face Of The Earth" Either rise up and be United or we are doomed.

Thinking, Questioning, Reflecting...

Totalitarian regimes have always controlled the 'massess' by using FEAR to control the people.
A FEAR-FILLED people will quit THINKING/REFLECTING and will not question authority!

But NOT everyone reacted to THAT DAY we call 9/11 with FEAR.

Some of us-me especially- wanted to understand why a few -and it was only a few back then- people hated US so much they would target and murder innocent people.

I deplore their tactics but I learned THEY have a point!

THEY have many reasons but the root of today's terrorism brings us back to the events of 1948, and THAT is what needs to be looked at, reflected upon, and remedied, or the ever escalating violence in the world,
will one day annhiliate US all.

The Universally accepted definition of INSANITY, is to repeat the same action believing one will achieve a different result.
Violence for violence can only reap more violence, will men ever learn that?
Will men evolve or will they blow us all up?

I have been deep into the West Bank 3 times and am returning for a 4th in 2 months, to complete my second book.
My first book was just published-it covers trip one-and MUCH more.

If you are ready to replace FEAR with deep thought,

Do not be afraid!

Simple common sense tells anyone with half a brain that the absolute best defense against terrorist attacks is to simply ignore them. Very much like little children, once terrorists learn they aren’t getting any attention, political traction, or wall-to-wall TV coverage on the various “breaking news” (or is it “breaking wind”?) news networks from their bloody escapades they’ll all crawl back in their holes, never to be heard from again.

But, unfortunately, to the neo-Nazis now running both the US and Great Britain, the tragic truth is that Bin-Laden and his ilk are far more valuable alive than dead. This fact may also explain why “they” (using all their state-of-the-art, whiz-bang reconnaissance and the world’s supposedly finest military) STILLl haven’t been able to locate Bin-Laden (who, at last report, was on a dialysis machine for Heaven's sake!) or any more of his rag-tag bunch of Bedouins.

Now we learn that, after categorically denying it for months, Bush and his Cabal WERE keeping "detainees" in foreign prison. Perhaps the next revelation we'll get from these clowns is that Bin Laden and his ilk HAVE now (finally!) been found…guarding Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction.

So, why do our respective governments keep foisting these clearly phony “foiled terrorist plot” alerts and "War on Terror" speeches on a far too ignorant (not to mention willing) populace?

Simply because we keep believing them!

Bush is obviously the world's leading terrorist, enemy of the state who hates America. bin Laden is peanuts compared to Bush. Bush has his finger on the red button which could fire of 10,000 nuclear weapons at once and he has boasted of believing that using nuclear weapons are reasonable. If that doesn't make him the world's leading terrorist than we have a mad man with his finger on nuclear trigger and that is even more frightening.

Terrorists win!

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that terrorists win if a population is afraid. From 9/11 on, I was taken aback by the attempt (successful, it appears, although what that says about the intelligence of my fellow citizens is pretty bad) to make people afraid. Not once did Bush stand up and say "We are the most powerful country in the world" (I guess he knew then what we all know now). He did not mention that the people who died in 9/11 were the most fortunate people who have ever lived, with clean hot and cold running water, flush toilets, and a higher standard of living than this world has ever seen, and we are the luckiest people, as a nation, who have ever lived and that every single day, from 9/10/01 until today, 3,000 children die around the world of hunger related causes. He invaded Afghanistan (an illegal act if you ask me--I don't believe Al Quaeda was an arm of the Afghani government, even if the Taliban supported them) instead of seeing what Interpol might be able to do. In short, he exposed the great majority of US citizens to be a cowardly group of consumption driven dullards. Terrorists have won so far, but the real enemy is Bush and anyone who has supported his actions.

I guess we need another new pearl harbor? Then his polls will go up whenever he mentions terrorism. And of course the media won't cover what really happened, even if cheney is videotaped fleeing the scene with shotgun in hand.

Proof of Terrorist Victory Under Bush

When Americans lose rights it's proof of the victory of terrorism. With 200+ years of basic principles such as being guilty until proven innocent, the right to confront your accusers, adherence to Geneva Conventions and international laws that prohibit torture, and being the "beacon of liberty" has all been betrayed under Bush. Here are a few examples that prove terrorist victory:

1. Post 911 Arab round-ups. Many were rounded up and deported, others languished in jails incommunicado for months. The facts: most all never knew a "terrorist" and many were unabashedly pro-American. The crime: being Arab and "dark skinned."

2. Abu Gharib. A few low level soldiers and no civilians or CIA people convicted. The rules obviously were "coming from the top." But nobody "at the top" was or will be held accountable.

3. Guantanamo. The US government as judge, jury and torturer all in one. Just "trust us" we are told.

4. Illegal spy operations. Massive internet and phone evesdropping programs. No warrant required. Once again, Bush tells us, "trust me."

5. CIA Secret Prisons and Extraordinary Rendition. Massive and continued violations of international law and impositions on other coutries to do "our dirty work."

6. Iraq and WMD: The big lie. Everyone knows Bush always knew Iraq never had WMD. He obviously leaned on the US intelligence apparatus to "prove his point." Then, they were expected to be "the fall guys."

It goes on and on. The terrorists are indeed the victors. The above types of things were inconcievable in America prior to Bush.

Poorly formed accusations...

The Republicans may garner votes by making the populace fearful, but anyone who's paying attention knows that the Democrats do the exact same thing. It's just a matter of whose fear-mongering you buy into.

The question we should be asking is, is there reason to be "fearful" of these things? Leaving aside the image of shaking in one's boots, it's concern about our predicament that should motivate change. So, what are really the worst problems that face humanity today, and what should be done to avoid these problems? Should we be more concerned about Islamic terror or global warming? Should we be more concerned about the "sanctity of marriage" or the effects of second-hand smoke? What about the budget? Iraq? Iran? North Korea? Israel, Palestine, Lebanon? Peak Oil and alternative energy sources? Poverty in the U.S. and worldwide? Government spending? Eavesdropping? Government leaks of classified information? Vote fraud?

Whether or not we call them 'fears' (and frankly, I don't think Republicans are any more literally afraid of Islamic terrorists than Democrats are of global warming), we all have concerns about most or all of these issues and many of them have the potential to impact us right here at home. We vote for the person who most accurately represents our own concerns. If Americans are really more concerned about global warming than they are about islamic terror (or, at least, think that it warrants more action at the national government level) then their vote will represent it and we'll wind up with Gore in '08. And if it turns out that Islamic terror was really a bigger threat, we will find out soon after, and it'll be a learning experience for all.

How is any of the topics of study different from what advertising does, routinely?
Posted by: Sojourner on Sep 7, 2006 4:33 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I no longer watch TV, for many reasons. But I am luxuriating in the liberty from a constant barrage by insurance companies, retirement planners, over the counter remedy peddlers, health food advocates, diet warnings, used car salesmen of all stripes, ETC.

Fear is the way everything is peddled in the US (and everywhere else). It's even used more frequently than sex to sell whatever is to be sold. Selling is what capitalism is all about--however possible.

I recall running across a reference to the oldest known (because recorded) warning that the world was coming to an end. It was somewhere back in the 4th or 5th Century BCE in Greece. (About the same time and place, also, was the complaint that 'everyone was writing a book.' Some things never change.)

So I am not disturbed by the PR BS of Bush and Co. Bothered? OK. Of course his ratings go up 5 points. Advertising works. So what would that be now--from 19% to 24% favorable?

What bothers me is that his opposition cannot get it together. Instead we sit around and moan about how manipulative those Rove-like tactics are. Goebbels taught us that 75 years ago. If Americans are unfamiliar with the everyday strategy of dictators, we are too far gone to worry about Bush's PR BS.

I do admit that media which simply regurgitates the press releases from the NRC and the White House deserves to be ridiculed. But taken seriously? An idiot stinks the same by whatever name.

However, progressive media with nothing better to write about than the White House's PR needs to go back to journalism school.

Osama and W are soul mates. They have a symbiotic relationship, one hand washing the other. Osama gets recruits, and that fascist W gets his bubbas re-elected. They trot out their fear speeches and videos every election cycle. There is nothing better for recruiting terrorists than having the R's in control. And there is nothing better than keeping the dumbass electorate scared out of their little shorts than allowing Osama to remain free. Consider this: Love casteth out all fear.... Be not afraid.....Fear not for I am with you....- the Bible.

In fact the only surprise is that for some reason people still buy into this B.S. Personally the grainy footage of various shrouded Muslims seems as staged as the rest of it, generally being released coincidently around election periods or when Bush needs the support. Add in little meters turning orange and off-orange and almost orange but not quite and a news media owned by two or three sympathetic ceo's (to the government, not to me and you buddy) and you've got a pile of B.S that's been piling up for so long the only question remaining is how long until it topples and covers us all in shit.
