War on Iraq

A Father Speaks Out Against the Iraq War

By Paul Rockwell, In Motion Magazine. Posted June 17, 2006.

Imagine losing your child in a war based on lies and misinformation. On Father's Day, Fernando Suarez del Solar remembers his son.

His buddies in the Marines called him the "Aztec warrior." Jesus Suarez del Solar was one of the first Americans killed during in invasion of Iraq. On March 27, 2003 Jesus stepped on an undetonated U.S. cluster bomb and bled to death in a remote desert near Diwaniya. Jesus left behind his wife and 1-year-old son, his mother, three sisters, and a father who now speaks out against the occupation of Iraq. As a representative of Military Families Speak Out, a burgeoning organization of 1,500 families who call for an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq, Fernando Juarez tells high school and college students: Stay in school; don't be deceived by false promises from recruiters for Bush.

Fernando Suarez del Solar is a Mexican-born American citizen. With his wife and children, he immigrated from Tijuana, Mexico, to Escondido, California, where he delivered newspapers and worked at a Seven-Eleven store.

Paul Rockwell: How did your son lose his life in Iraq?

Fernando Suarez: On March 26th the army dropped cluster bombs outside a city. The next day my son's unit received orders to advance into the area. That's when he stepped on a cluster bomb.

Rockwell: Cluster bomb are anti-personnel weapons, with a failure rate of 15 to 20 percent. When they lie unexploded on the ground, like mines, they look like beer cans and are easy to step on. Did his commanders inform Jesus about cluster bomb drops in the area?

Suarez: He never received any information about the drop.

Rockwell: Was that a mistake, an exception to overall policy? Does the military put out fliers or warnings about cluster bombs in the area?

Suarez: No. What happened was, after my son was killed, the military in the area began to pay more attention. They publicized the accident.

Rockwell: I guess the Iraqi civilians, like kids playing in the fields, didn't get any warnings about left-over clusters?

Suarez: That's right.

Rockwell: How did your son get involved in the military?

Suarez: My son was in Mexico. Along the border there are military recruiters. My son told the recruiter he hoped to join the police in Tijuana. The recruiter said: "Don't join the Mexican police. It's dangerous for you in the police department in Tijuana. It's safer for you to join the Marine Corps."

In 1997 we moved from Tijuana to San Diego, where Jesus wanted to finish high school. That's where he joined the military.

Rockwell: Did the recruiters deceive Jesus?

Suarez: The military promised Jesus to provide money for school. They said Jesus would get $1,000 a month for school, but the recruiter never explained where the money comes from. When Jesus finished boot camp, he became very upset. He told me: "The recruiter said I am going to receive $1,000 every month. I only get $620."

So I talked with the recruiter. He explained, "Yes, you receive $1,000 a month, minus money for the scholarship, minus $100 for the uniform -- minus, minus, minus."

Rockwell: I understand that the military is recruiting youth from the Philippines, from Mexico, people of color in the Third World. Was your son living in Mexico when he was contacted?

Suarez: Yes. When he came to San Diego he had a green card.

Rockwell: Where do recruiters contact young people?

Bush said, that will be for the next president to decide. Republicans plan on using Iraq war in 2008 elections. The most effective tool for Iraq independence is a DEADLINE. They have stated they would be able, and proposed a date. Support our troops vote yes on a DEADLINE.

I admire this young man. the effort to revise is sacrifice for the US is disgusting. had he survived, which the overwhelming number of soldiers do, he would have qualified for veterans benefits, preferences and the honor that the American people are going to bestow on Iraq vets to make up for the inexcusable scorn the Left heaped on Vietnam vets.

This young man was recruited in 97 when there was no war. yet he was in uniform in 03, so he must have re-enlisted.
His father sounds as though he doesn't know what he's talking about and he certainly has no idea of the great things that his son and his colleagues accomplished in the removal of one of the greatest threats to world peace in the past 25 years.

Another disortion that can't go unchallenged is that all the recruits are mexican which is ludicrous. yet Alternet lets these lies be presented as news as part of its hate any thing American campaign.

With the Bushies it's here a lie, there a lie, everywhere a lie, lie. The biggest lie of all is that the leadership are moral people acting in the best interest of all Americans. The reality is that they are mass murderers with here a death, there a death and everwhere a death, death. This is not morality, it is mass murder in the cause of greed here, greed there, everywhere greed, greed.

Feller, you are such a troll. I met Fernando and joined him in vigils and protests in San Diego County. He is a man with a heart of gold, a man you will never equal in integrity or compassion.

Bush lied and you know it. Fernando's son died for nothing -- oops, I mean for Bush, Cheney and Rumsfailed.

For every Feller out there, I wish I could exchange your life for every innocent Iraqi and US soldier that has died. You are a disgusting human being and you don't deserve to be here in this country. Feller, go sign up for Bush and die.

Good advice. Have you noticed the ones loudest in praise of Bush and his low life admin are the ones staying the farthest away from the blood and bombs? My husband was career Army and I lost relatives and friends in WWll, Korea and Viet Nam so I'm not talking thru my hat

Why do parents protest against war after their kids die?
Why don't they protest while their kids are alive?

Does the loss magically take the blinders off?

The only reason Bush is stressing amnesty and workers programs with Mexican citizens is that he needs more young people to sign on to his endless illegal war activities.

Promise some poor mexicans the sky, as well as some poor americans and they will do his biding untill they are dead. Does he care? Of course not.

As long as our young people and illegal mexican people fall for Bush'es fantasies they will die or get maimed.

Personally, I am a legal immigrant and I am against illegal immigration. When will it ever penetrate your head and heart that Bush only wants you as cannon fodder?

Good read, unique, useful. Thanks alternet. Please, more of this.

Also, for anyone who hasn't participated in counter-recruitment, what are you waiting for? Not only is it important to do, it's fun political work. Kick some ass and have some laughs!

If only more fathers spoke out. Maybe even if more people spoke out about an illegal War. Let's not stop there. Speak out against Germany putting Ernst Zundel on trial, speak out about Amazon pulling book titles like "America Deceived" by E.A. Blayre III off the shelves. Speak out about NSA tapping everyone's phone without a warrant and in direct violation of the 4th Amendment.
Speak out and support indy media.

Re: nothing above except what a low life criminal Constitution-shredding vindictive sack of caca this bunch that calls itself an administration is, I am sure it didn't escape the posters of Alternet what happened to Dan Rather when he broke the story about Bush's National Guard shenanigans. The neoNazis masquerading as humans obviously suborned the witnesses to make them withdraw their charges. CBS folded like an accordian and threw Rather to the wolves, correction jackals..

And the hypocrites want to build a wall...

Interesting article and terribly sad.

So it's ok to keep Mexicans out by building a "Berlin" wall, yet recruiters are only too happy to send them to their deaths with outright lies and disinformation?

Reminds me of the stories of African Americans being on the "front lines" in Viet Nam. Cannon fodder is more like it.

So illegal immigrants are a problem in theory, not in practice. They cut your lawns, paint your houses, nanny your kids, and much more while making less than your pitiful minimum wage. Now they fight your wars and die for you too.

A whole new level of bigotry! What an accomplishment.
