War on Iraq

U.S. Lied About Chemical Weapons in Iraq

By George Monbiot, AlterNet. Posted November 16, 2005.

We now know napalm and phosphorus bombs have been dropped on Iraqis; what are we going to do about it?

Did US troops use chemical weapons in Falluja? The answer is yes. The proof is not to be found in the documentary broadcast on Italian TV last week, which has generated gigabytes of hype on the internet. It's a turkey, whose evidence that white phosphorus was fired at Iraqi troops is flimsy and circumstantial.

But the bloggers debating it found the smoking gun.

The first account they unearthed in a magazine published by the US army. In the March 2005 edition of Field Artillery, officers from the 2nd Infantry's fire support element boast about their role in the attack on Falluja in November last year: "White Phosphorous. WP proved to be an effective and versatile munition. We used it for screening missions at two breeches and, later in the fight, as a potent psychological weapon against the insurgents in trench lines and spider holes when we could not get effects on them with HE [high explosive]. We fired 'shake and bake' missions at the insurgents, using WP to flush them out and HE to take them out."

The second, in California's North County Times, was by a reporter embedded with the marines in the April 2004 siege of Falluja. "'Gun up!' Millikin yelled ... grabbing a white phosphorus round from a nearby ammo can and holding it over the tube. 'Fire!' Bogert yelled, as Millikin dropped it. The boom kicked dust around the pit as they ran through the drill again and again, sending a mixture of burning white phosphorus and high explosives they call 'shake'n'bake' into ... buildings where insurgents have been spotted all week."

White phosphorus is not listed in the schedules of the Chemical Weapons Convention. It can be legally used as a flare to illuminate the battlefield, or to produce smoke to hide troop movements from the enemy. Like other unlisted substances, it may be deployed for "Military purposes ... not dependent on the use of the toxic properties of chemicals as a method of warfare". But it becomes a chemical weapon as soon as it is used directly against people. A chemical weapon can be "any chemical which through its chemical action on life processes can cause death, temporary incapacitation or permanent harm."

White phosphorus is fat-soluble and burns spontaneously on contact with the air. According to globalsecurity.org: "The burns usually are multiple, deep, and variable in size. The solid in the eye produces severe injury. The particles continue to burn unless deprived of atmospheric oxygen ... If service members are hit by pieces of white phosphorus, it could burn right down to the bone." As it oxidises, it produces smoke composed of phosphorus pentoxide. According to the standard US industrial safety sheet, the smoke "releases heat on contact with moisture and will burn mucous surfaces. ... Contact ... can cause severe eye burns and permanent damage."

Until last week, the US State Department maintained that US forces used white phosphorus shells "very sparingly in Fallujah, for illumination purposes." They were fired "to illuminate enemy positions at night, not at enemy fighters." Confronted with the new evidence, on Thursday it changed its position. "We have learned that some of the information we were provided ... is incorrect. White phosphorous shells, which produce smoke, were used in Fallujah not for illumination but for screening purposes, ie obscuring troop movements and, according to ... Field Artillery magazine, 'as a potent psychological weapon against the insurgents in trench lines and spider holes. ...' The article states that US forces used white phosphorus rounds to flush out enemy fighters so that they could then be killed with high explosive rounds." The US government, in other words, appears to admit that white phosphorus was used in Falluja as a chemical weapon.

Digg!

Why does anyone still expect moral consistency from this bunch? This administration is run by Reptiles. It's easy to spot a Reptile; he's carrying two rulebooks, one for the rest of the world, and one for himself.

White Phosphorous destroyed my birthplace

I was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas -- the site of the Chemical and Biological Weapons Incinerator that "disposes" of these hideous munitions.

White Phosphorous is one of these munitions. It regularly combusts spontaneously within the bunkers, sending the facility off-line. This is reported on by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette often. My hometown is a destroyed and economically devastated place; I do not go there, not even to visit the graves of my ancestors. WP is a disgrace to America and the world and if this is not reason enough to shut down the Senate and demand an end to this war, what is? What will we hear of next -- cannibalism?

Protesting against WP & napalm is over the line.

From the point of view of the guy on the ground -- it's a war. It's a war that they shouldn't be fighting, and is badly managed -- but it's a war. They are getting killed, and they are going to try to kill the guys who are trying to kill them.

So let them use all the WP and napalm they want. I don't want American soldiers dying because somebody in DC decides that it's rude to kill somebody by burning instead of by bullets.

WP and napalm are not chemical weapons, as the term is generally understood. Chemical weapons are things like gas and insecticides, that endanger the user as much as the target, if the wind shifts, and that ruin the environment no matter what. That's why we don't use them -- they're too risky to both sides. That is not the same thing as WP and napalm.

In the category of "end the war but support the troops," protesting the use of WP and napalm is over the line. Using them doesn't prolong the war, and does save American lives.

This government was founded upon lies and misdeeds.Washington made friends of the Iroqouis, then burnt them out. We made Indian Nations become 'Civilized' only to walk them off on the 'Trail of Tears'. Every agreement was broken, every treaty rendered moot. The govt even sterilized Indian women, against their will without consent up until the
late 1970's.They lies about WW2,Vietman,and Iraq,Iran and Central America. This govt aides the Mexican govt in waging genocide on Indian Tribes in S.E. Mexico. In 1776 they formed
the World's biggest 'Liars Club'. For no better reason than these,we should disband this govt. Create a system that governs by consensus of all peoples. With no law passing that is'nt fully agreed apon by all. Where care is taken to insure what we do today will not have adverse effects on the 7th generation to follow. Finally we must make decisions with rerspect to the Earth. Not as a source of income but as a
source for supporting all Life. Then we can begin the long but happy walk back to being True Humans.

Don't forget about Polish president

Hi everyone,
I'm writing from Poznan, Poland. Just recently I've decided to start my own crusade against Mr.Kwasniewski, Polish president who is responsible for sending Poles to Iraq. Whenever the list of criminals is mentioned, it usually contains obvious names of Bush, Cheney, Blair, Rumsfeld, Powell, Berlusconi, Wolfowitz, Perle, and the like. I rarely see Kwasniewski's name listed in this context. As this man is directly responsible for sending Polish troops to Iraq (with 80% of the population opposing the war and slightly over 60% demanding of an immediate withdraw of our troops), I kindly ask you to start including him on the list of war criminals. Hopefully, one day we'll see them all in some modern Nurnberg.

Mythical Liberal Media Bias Beast

When news breaks with heavy magnitude, such as this one, why is it so damned hard for the big box media giants to cover it? Sometimes it makes me wonder if they've ever heard of the INTERNETS. Some sound, investigative, watch-dog journalism would be nice. But because of their chicken-shit, wet finger in the wind attitude, the bulk of America is just now beginning to see what progressives and independent thinkers all over the world have seen all along.

Which of the major players will be the first to spite the media for being too liberal (even though they really have yet to react)? My guess is we'll see a rash of 9/11 images, we'll hear the whole story over again about how Saddam attacked us....oops I mean Usama.

MK77 napalm was used against civilians in Fallujah, too
Posted by: ScottP on Nov 16, 2005 9:36 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I saw the photographs of the burned corpses of children and babies from the decimation of Fallujah. The ones I saw did not look like the deep spot burning of phosphor. The burns were widespread (over 50%) and shallower, leaving most of the body bloated and red, more like what I would expect from napalm. I saw photos of dozens of children's corpses, along with many more adults. So many that I couldn't continue leafing through them after a point. I recall the source was a doctor in Fallujah.

There were additional reports of use of high power radar (or some similar electro-magnetic radiation device) against the population, apparently another experiment using human guinea pigs. There have been defense programs developing "non-lethal" weapons, I suspect this is related. Of course, non-lethal would be only in the near term, if the subject suffers for a month and then dies, it doesn't count as lethal.

I appreciate that this article is bringing up some issues that have been ignored by the corporate media, but beware that this is just scratching the surface of the cruelty being inflicted upon entire cities. While you read the article, another child was blown up by a airstrike, another father was tortured, another mother was killed, and another baby was born deformed due to the radiation left by depleted uranium artillery and A-10 bullets.

Will we act surprised when the backlash for our barbaric attack lasts for generations?

Fire Mission. Shell Willy Pete. Lot X-Ray. Fuze Victor Tango.

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Greetings all.

italian communist news reporters and their unusual perspectives about artillery ammunition and its application sure have been getting a lot of electrons here.

GB's here to tell all y'all that he loves tac air and napalm and willy pete. It's visceral. The guys on the receiving end hate the very thought, as do their italian sympathizers. It's visceral for them, too. When used regularly, fire has been shown to be an efficaceous way to demoralize an enemy and to cause him to quit his position, thereby making it easier for you to kill him with HE, and not the other way around, which is most unsatisfying. Btw, HE means conventional high explosive artillery ammunition.

Fire, as a weapon is neither cruel nor unusual. In Homer's day it was called something like 'Greek Fire'. Interestingly enough, napalm, properly laid, creates a vacuum that effectively kills bad guys in hardened positions by sucking out the oxygen out of the environment in about a millisecond. They're dead befire they're crisped up. It's not a particularly nice way to die but it is quick and very effective because you can be sure that the dead guy isn't going to be shooting at you any more.

For bad guys in holes, white phosphorus (willy pete to the trade) is nice with a variable time (VT) fuze that blows it about 200 feet from the ground. It gives a bad guy a 'hot foot' and makes him want to jump up and put out the fire. It's just so much easier to lay HE on him when he's up and out of his hole, wouldn't you agree?

In his day, GB laid a lot of napalm on bad guys. Same-same willy pete. The bad guys were bad because they were trying to kill GB and his Marine charges. The bad guys thought that they were the good guys and revolutionaries and freedom fighters trying to kill GB and his invading hoard. GB guesses that it all depends upon one's point of view. Terrorist or patriot? Go ask Menachim Begin.

This is baloney. By this definition any explosive would be a chemical weapon because the explosion is a chemical action.

WP is a perfectly legal, if perfectly horrible weapon. There is NO story here unless it is proven that civilians were deliberately targeted.

Giuliana Sgrena was the reporter who was shot-up trying to get to the Baghdad Airport last spring. Her bodyguard, a top-level Italian intelligence agent was killed by US troops. Contrary to US claims, troops opened fire on her car AFTER it had passed their hidden "checkpoint." The back of the car was shot up, and the agent assigned to help her escape was killed. She was carrying film documenting what happened in Falluja. It was not a case of failing to stop for a checkpoint. There was no checkpoint. It was an assasination attempt, to keep her quiet.

And what the fuck difference does it matter what political affiliations the reporter might have, since your own president shakes hands with the leader of Viet Nam and plans to do business with our "sworn" enemy. What's changed there? 30 years ago they were communists and it was our duty to kill them. Now, they're still communists, and they are our friends and imminent business partners, according to YOUR president. That really was a cheap shot. Shame on you.

And, gosh, I'm impressed with all your knowledge of the latest in killing technologies.

"You've been with the professors, and they all liked your looks. With great lawyers, you've discussed lepers and crooks. You've been through all F. Scott FITZGERALD's books. It seems to me that the first step towards addressing the U.S. use of chemical weapons in Iraq is to withdraw our troops from Iraq altogether. With a conservative and respected Democratic Congressman already calling for such withdrawal, it seems clear that the time has arrived for this. Led by Vice President Cheney, whose five draft deferments kept him out of the Vietnam war, the Bush administration is making an all-out assault on those who favor immediate withdrawal. It is time we recognize the Vice President for what he is: Five-Deferment Dick.

sheihk fehmi naji el iman yesterday said benbrikas views are damaging and poisoning islam and muslim people aswell as his followers minds. the muslim and islam religion itself is not the enemy.....the nation leaders should keep that in mind before arresting and abusing innocent religious members

Whether it is manufactured in the name of Napalm or manufactured under a different name is immaterial. It is a chemical weapon. Phosphorus is not listed as a Chemical weapon is going to be the hue and cry of the administration. I guess because we could find no WMD in Iraq, we would bring our own. I am surprised the administration has not said these chemicals were found in Iraq. As long as this story is covered the administration will use phosphorous to make sure this story does not becomes clear. The one comment about there are two set rules - "a rule for us & a rule for them." is right on the mark.

When Cambodia was bombed in the Vietnam War, the orders originated from the Pentagon, the White House was CCd, and the order went to SAC, in which I served on the ground, using precision radar and ballistics from the ground to remotely direct trios of bomb-dropping B-52s in the air, day or nite, pre GPS.

The White House lied then about the bombing of Cambodia, regardless of their party affiliation. It was their job. It's still their job. Why should we be shocked and awed?

What we need is a voting majority that can't be fixed at the ballot box. Thank you Alternet for the reality check!!!
