War on Iraq

Recruiters Reach New Lows

By Katrina vanden Heuvel, The Nation. Posted June 23, 2005.

While the alarming list of recruiting abuses has received some needed media attention, it's worth reviewing the extremes to which the military has gone to fill its ranks.

During the Vietnam War, protesters burned draft cards, rallied on campuses and marched on Robert McNamara's Pentagon. Today, with the war in Iraq raging on and on, parents, teachers and other community leaders are spearheading a new antiwar effort, telling the military to keep their hands off the children. The Times' Bob Herbert put it well: "The parents of the kids being sought by recruiters to fight this unpopular war are creating a highly vocal and potentially very effective antiwar movement."

The debacle in Iraq has made recruiting an impossibly difficult job, and recruiters are sinking to new lows in the face of growing pressure to fulfill monthly quotas, as well as fierce opposition from parents who don't support the President's botched Iraq war mission.

While the stunning list of recruiting abuses has received some needed media attention, it's worth reviewing the extremes to which the military has gone to fill its ranks. In Houston, one recruiter warned a potential recruit that if he backed out of a meeting, "we'll have a warrant" for the potential recruit's arrest. In Colorado, a high school student, David McSwane, who wanted to see "how far the Army would go during a war to get one more soldier," told recruiters that he didn't finish high school and that he had a drug problem. "No problem," the recruiters responded. McSwane was told to create a diploma from scratch and to buy products at a store that would help him beat the drug test.

Recruiters have urged teens to lie to their parents and have ignored medical and police records of potential recruits to not compromise recruiting goals. In Ohio, two recruiters signed up a 21-one-year-old man with bipolar disorder who had just been released from a psychiatric ward. The violations, all told, forced the Army into halting all recruiting for a day last May so it could re-train its recruiters and remind them of the ethical considerations entailed in their jobs.

Despite this recent recruit-at-all-costs mentality, the Army has now failed to meet its monthly recruiting quotas for four months straight. (It's beginning to re-jigger its goals in mid-stream and even then it still can't meet its quotas.) There's even talk among retired military brass and other defense experts that the all-volunteer Army is stretched so thin in Iraq that it can't sustain the mission much longer.

Hence, recruiting violations in the Army have nearly doubled to 320 in 2004 from 199 in 1999, and as my colleague Ari Berman pointed out the Army has added 1,200 recruiters, "upped enlistment bonuses from $6,000 to $20,000 per recruit," and created 15-month enlistments as an alternative to the standard two-year enlistment period. The Army is also accepting into its ranks a greater number of high school dropouts and lower-scoring applicants as well.

Digg!

When are the Bush twins headede to Iraq?

If the President and Mrs. Bush will not advise their own children, Jenna and Barbara, both 22 and ripe age to join up and fight for democracy in Iraq; why should any other parent in the United States promote the idea of their children going to "fight for our country?" One could conclude that the first family does not support the war in Iraq. What better symbol of support for the war and for our troops if the "first twins" would sign up and ship out to Iraq?

Don't look for it anytime soon.

The Bush family is typical of the Republican wealthy elite of this country who sponge off of taxpayers and lie, cheat, steal, and make billions fo dollars while bowing their heads in prayer and wearing their little fascist flag pins on ther lapels and collars. (Democrats are less repugnent elitiist.) As far as I know, not one Bush family member or relative serve in the military. It a shining example of their family history of with the exception of Sr. whose own service carries a dubious shadow of inexplicable survival of a plane crash while his entire crew, unable to bail out as Sr. did, perished in the Pacific Ocean. Grandfather Prescott traded witht he Nazi regine when it was illegal to do so. Sr. trade with the Iranians and supported cocaine smuggling by Oliver North and the CIA to helpo fund the illega CONTRA war agianst Nicaragua. No, don't look for any Bushies to actually BE patriotic by joining the service, or even do comminity service. Wealthy white Republicans are better at starting wars, waving the flag, proclaiming their fath and moralit is better than everyone elses, and pointing the way to the front. They are not real Americans.

The recruiting tactics of the military must be clean and above board.
When you are signing up to risk your life, you have to know that the men you are shipping out with are dependable.
One may argue that the documents may not tell the whole story about a man's life and many people deserve a shot that may not be supportable by their documents....
but the Army is going out on very thin ice when they start forging documents to enlist people.
Maybe it is time to publicly reexamine induction standards and recruitment practices.

Your country needs you! You support this war, you should be filling the ranks of the corpses being sent to die for lies. It is really laughable at the yellow cowards who vote for Bush and don't have the gumption to put their money where their mouth is.

I guess that's what happens when you worship a warmongering scumbag who dodged his own service, and a vice president who skipped out on his obligation as well.

Keep watching Fox news and the History channel - it's about as participatory in your government as you can handle. Sad, really.

Republicans have no platform to support a war when they can't even stand up and fight for it.

Hegemonic relationships. Gotta love 'em. What is important about this article is, when taken with the other stories (unmet recruiting quotas, usage of obscure No Child Left Behind legislation, flag burning laws, the increase in death benefits to Veteran families, the Amnesty International condemnation of Guantanamo, the Downing Street memo, and on an on), that the anti-war movement is starting to reach a critical mass. Or at least it feels like it's moving in that direction. This is very encouraging! Very soon I expect the nation to reach a boiling point where either a very serious discussion of a military draft will take place or the politicians will graft more spine and intensify their pressure for an exit timeline. BTW, is it just me, or does the program title 'No Child Left Behind' reflect a perfect case of Orwell's 'doublethink'? Creepy.

Bring the troops home, then the recruitment problem goes away, we can declare victory hand the mess to the iraqis, who are going to have it anyway. Then it is a glorious parade, everyone is happy and the world goes on. Stay and you will destroy the military and this country. Bleeding both treasure and lives for a brain fart of a dry drunk, coke snorting, cowardly deserter, just for starters.

I believe you are onto something there. I have felt for some time that the encruitment and conscription of those targeted as the "failures" of society, the poor, the non-white, the uneducated, is very much a "cleansing" action by this most unscrupulous administration. It is made all the more effective by these children's perceived inability to fight back.

I am very distressed. Recently, a young man I didn't recognize came into my office to empty my trash can, but it wasn't the one who usually comes each day. I asked him where the other guy was, and he said he was having his physical that day for the Army! I couldn't believe it! When the other young man (maybe 18 or 19) returned, he was wearing an army hat and camo t-shirt. He was strutting around and it was obvious he felt pretty cool--just like GI Joe. I felt really sad because clearly this kid doesn't have a clue what he's in for. I hope the next time I see him is not on the local news.

Our wars are planned by the Wealthy Elite to cleanse our country and other countries of the worlds minorities and/or poor (the people the Wealthy Elite look down on as a drain on society when in actuality it is the Elite who are the problem). The Wealthy Elite have stolen most of the world's money leaving people no where else to turn for financial help accept enlisting in a fake war created for their death and the Elite's profit. The Wealthy Elite are errogant theives who don't even know what the words "hard work" mean but they know how to be immoral and dishonest; after all, money is the only thing that matters. If you were black and you stole as much money and were as unethical as they, you would have been put to death by now.

Read Edwin Black's book, "War Against the Weak" for more insight. His research is amazing!!

what are we supposed to do when our own president won't let his children go to Iraq? As far as I'm concerned he has no right to do that. I also believe that the "war" as a whole is inmoral and wrong. Bush should be tried in an international military court!!

One of the most dire problems facing the security of our nation is not the terrorists, but the errosion of talented soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. We are losing the most talented and experienced of these by attrition and we are replacing them with high school drop outs and future article 15 recipients. Further, if this was a legitimate war that had purposeful goals and unambiguous reasons for being there at all then there would be no problem in recruiting talented people. We would be getting the very best recruits instead of people from the fringes of society.

Apodopa is quitting his ruse

It's a bloody joke - satire, apodopa is too. I'm giving it up. But I've seen that there are among us many who rush to judgement. We need to fight the crazy Christians vigorously, not only here, everywhere.
I've spent nearly fifteen years living and working in the South in the underground utilities construction industry. I was a Senior Equipment Sales Engineer with alot of responsibility for a division of a major manucturer based in Perry OK. I'm sort of redneck, as liberal than Che and I'm gay. I had to quit, the racism and bigotry of the South, and the industry I worked in nearly drove me to strike out in violence. It's too long a story to detail but everyperson has a breaking point. I reached mine five years ago when My superior told me Aids was Gods way of ridding the country of fags. It took all of my strength from killing that human being on the spot. You have no idea. I quit several months later and moved to New England. I walked away from alot of money but you know the old saying about money and selling your soul.
Racism and bigotry in the South and Mid-West is much worse than anyone can imagine true. I know many right-wing Christians, rednecks, the Rush Limbaugh kind of people. They are all demonically possessed and it is my opinion that they can't be spoken too. They are like a virus and I hate to be the one to say it, but they must be dealt with somehow. Poeple like Dick Durban are not helping, nor are most Democrats. This country is headed toward civil unrest - there is no other way to get rid of the fascists. IMHO
As to the stuff I posted posing as a right-winger I did it for several reasons, first for a kick then to piss certain people off. So sue me. Alot of people who hated me also have alot to learn but don't lose the anger - it's good to hate fascism, we must destroy it before it gets worse. I'll understadn if y'all are mad at me. But fight on.
Peace to All

Don't bash the Christians

OK now, not all Christians are bad.
I am a Christian, and although I voted for Bush the first time, I voted 3rd party this last time.
I am former Navy; I know how screwed up the system is. My first duty station was the White House under BC and GWB, followed by Afghanistan right after 9/11. Earned myself a Purple Heart for my efforts.
It's not the Christians, it's the stupid and the lazy, inasmuch as the American citizenry are concerned.
Don't blame the Christians - show tolerance. You want tolerance, right? You must show it or you don't deserve it.
Christians are not the problem, stupidity is. Anyone who believes what "W" says is of questionable mental ability. Of course, no politician ever lied, right?
To all of the American citizens that watch TV tonight instead of writing a letter to a Congressman, I say this:
YOU are the problem.
To everyone more interested in Jacko's penis, I say this:
YOU are the problem.
To everyone who eats ready-made food tonight instead of cooking something nutritious, I say this:
YOU are the problem.
To everyone who sits back and simply accepts what they are told, I say this:
YOU are the problem.
To everyone who goes out to Little League tonight instead of writing the President over the Supreme Courts decision regarding private property, I say this:
YOU are the problem.

It's not the Christians, folks. The media wants you to have that scapegoat so you won't pay attention to the politicians! Nice bait-and-switch, if you ask me.

Instead of the Citizenry fighting amongst ourselves, blasting Christians, Muslims, Jews, Nazis, models, retards, geniuses, or whoever, let's direct our efforts toward our government, which is the source of the problems.

If we fight amongst ourselves, then 'they' win, for while we are fighting 'us', we cannot fight 'them'.

Just my .02.

A Potential Source for Military Personnel

I'm surpised that the military hasn't started raiding our prisons. We are incarcerating more people than ever, so there would be plenty of potential soldiers. The recruiters could offer that all of their potential prison time would be covered and the charges would be dropped if they join the military.

I have been reading several comments on the web page. The problem I see is that we are using radical statements to make change and this does not work. There are better ways; I have been practicing with "VOTE FOR NO INCUMBENTS" whether a Democrat or a Republican. If we can spread this message, the effect will be over whelming. It does not matter if the representative is the greatest person in the world; if 38-50 incumbents can be unseated in the mid-term election. Washington D C will be in shock. The person is not important, the act is. Political Science is what the old school is dependent on. Pass the word "VOTE FOR NO INCUMBENTS". Lets take back our government.

OK fine, the recruiters are taking people who don't graduate high school and use drugs, and how is this different than before? Let me tell you I was one of those kids who got into drugs when I was very young and I did terribly in High School. I joined the Army in 2000. I went to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as other countries in Europe and Asia. I managed to fit in a few college classes while not deployed, and I'll be on my way to college by next fall, a completley different person. How about that fact that one can use the Army as an engine to change their life? I'll be going to college for free and I get homeowner preference from the VA.
I also wish you would retract that statment about battalion commanders being unable to separate soldiers for drugs etc. because it is misleading and factually inaccurate. Army Regulation 635-200 (enlisted peronnel separations) states that the brigade commander is the authority to separate soldiers for misconduct, which includes drugs, unsatifactory performance, being overweiight, pregnance (which is strictly voluntary), and a score of other reasons people can get kicked out of the Army. On an aside, yes open homosexuality is a grounds for separation, but one that warrants an honorable discharge.
Anyway, this 'internal army memo' listed in the article directs the brigade commander (on echelon higher than the battalion) to separate soldiers who are in their first term of enlistment, the only authority withheld from battalion commanders is the voluntary request from the soldier to be separated from the service for pregnancy. Brigade commanders always took action otherwise and nothing serious has changed. Battalion commanders never had the authority to separate soldiers for drugs, so the wall street journal is absolultey wrong, and this news service is obviously not that good at checking the facts.
Great journalism though, completley objective...joke...
