War on Iraq

After Downing Street

By William Rivers Pitt, TruthOut.org. Posted June 10, 2005.

The Minutes now stand as irrefutable proof that the road to war in Iraq was paved, with absolute intent, with lies and deceit and misdirection and fraud.

Intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. Bush had already made the decision to invade. That's what the leaked secret British intelligence document now known as the Downing Street Minutes tells us from back in time to July of 2002, before discussion of an Iraq invasion had made its way anywhere near public discussion. The decision to invade Iraq had already been made in the summer of 2002, and in order to make that decision a reality, intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy of invasion.

It is interesting. The occupation of Iraq has lasted more than 800 days, and debate over the invasion has been going on for more than a thousand days. In that time, revelation after revelation has been put forth exposing the lies and manipulation used by the Bush administration to make this war happen. The first accusations of Bush administration mendacity on this issue were revealed six months before the invasion took place, in an October 8, 2002, article by Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay titled "Some Administration Officials Expressing Misgivings on Iraq."

While President Bush marshals congressional and international support for invading Iraq," reads the article, "a growing number of military officers, intelligence professionals and diplomats in his own government privately have deep misgivings about the administration's double-time march toward war. These officials charge that administration hawks have exaggerated evidence of the threat that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein poses - including distorting his links to the al-Qaida terrorist network - have overstated the amount of international support for attacking Iraq and have downplayed the potential repercussions of a new war in the Middle East.

They charge that the administration squelches dissenting views," continues the article, "and that intelligence analysts are under intense pressure to produce reports supporting the White House's argument that Saddam poses such an immediate threat to the United States that pre-emptive military action is necessary. 'Analysts at the working level in the intelligence community are feeling very strong pressure from the Pentagon to cook the intelligence books,' said one official, speaking on condition of anonymity. A dozen other officials echoed his views in interviews. No one who was interviewed disagreed. None of the dissenting officials, who work in a number of different agencies, would agree to speak publicly, out of fear of retribution. But many of them have long experience in the Middle East and South Asia, and all spoke in similar terms about their unease with the way US political leaders are dealing with Iraq.

Since the publication of that article, we have learned about the Project for the New American Century, about its powerful advocates in Washington - Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and Bolton among them - and about their plans from 2000 that centered around an invasion and occupation of Iraq, based upon whatever pretext was available, to establish a permanent military presence in the Mideast and to gain ultimate control of petroleum management in the region.

We have learned about the secretive Office of Special Plans and its deliberate manipulation of Iraq weapons intelligence, about deliberate pressure put on analysts in the CIA by powerful men like Dick Cheney to manufacture reports of an Iraqi threat that did not match the facts, we have heard the details of this deliberate manipulation from government insiders like Paul O'Neill, Richard Clarke, Tom Maertens, Roger Cressey, Donald Kerrick, Greg Thielmann, Karen Kwiatkowski, Rand Beers and Joseph Wilson, whose wife's CIA career was shattered by the White House through the very breed of retribution those anonymous sources from the October 2002 article were worried about.

We have watched our government use the attacks of September 11 to terrorize the American people into supporting the invasion of Iraq, we wrapped ourselves in plastic sheeting and duct tape while handling our mail with oven mitts so as not to be infected with the anthrax we were told was in the hands of Saddam Hussein, we were told that they knew the weapons were there, that they knew where the weapons were, we were told by Bush himself his January 2003 State of the Union address that the 26,000 liters of anthrax, 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin, one million pounds of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent, 30,000 munitions to deliver the stuff, mobile biological weapons labs and uranium from Niger for use in a robust nuclear weapons program were waiting in Iraq to be given to terrorists for use against us, and that this was the main reason, the central reason, the absolute fact which required immediate action.

We have seen all this and more, we have seen torture, we have seen murder, we have seen the grinding of a civilian population in Iraq that was no threat to us or anyone else, we have seen hundreds of billions of dollars funneled into the bank accounts of administration cronies under the camouflage of this "War on Terror," we have seen 1,684 American soldiers die and be returned home in transfer tubes, we have seen 10 times that number wounded grievously, and we have seen more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians killed in their homes and on their streets, the uncounted dead whose innocent blood stains us all.

Digg!

An informative article and 'spot on'. Now as the media seems to be awakening lets take some of GW's advice-in his own words:
"See, in my line of work, you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda."
By all means let's all keep those Minutes in the forefront !

Colin Powell on Jon Stewart

Did anyone see Colin Powell smooth talking Stewart on the Daily Show? I wondered why he would wish to appear (book? election?) and then as he bullshitted his way through explanations for the invasion of Iraq, I realized he was there to spread disinformation, to smooth things over, to try to reassure people that the invasion wasn't a premeditated war of aggression, but rather a reasonable course of action given the knowledge that they had at the time. Complete B.S.

My opinion of Powell plummeted. At least we know that he is very much one of Them, complicit in their war crimes, and a personal Bush buddy.

But the fact that they trundled him out to go on this particular show, indicates to me that they are worried about the DSM and the press' belated interest in it.

We should all thank Congessman Conyers for championing this. This is clearly written evidence of an impeachable offense.

Impeach Bush!

THE TRUTH IN A NUTSHELL

Thanks to you Mr. Pitt for so concisely putting this information into a solid package. Talk about smoking guns. Surely there are a great many other "Deep Throats" out there who will start coming forward as this information starts to get more and more attention. The fact that so many young men and women who really did not have any ideologies of their own, died for the archaic ideologies of a bunch of neocon old farts is disgusting. Their ideologies had no vision. The trillions of dollars that have been spent on strategic oil reserve protection over the past 25 years, could and should have been used on renewable and alternative fuel source research. A whole new economy would have been birthed, the environment saved, 9/11 would not have happened, and thousands of people would not have died.
With this memo and the groundswell of attention it should be getting... maybe... just maybe, a few great men and women of a new kind of vision will emerge.

The tipping point

I still believe that the tipping point for our people over Vietnam was the magazine cover showing the 75 people who had died in Vietnam the previous week. It brought the face of the war to the people. This time, we have been attacked and many people are still scared. Why on earth would so many smart women vote for Bush against their own self interest except out of fear for their families. Most Americans don't read blogs; most people don't read newspapers. They don't have time. They get their news on television and radio. To simply say "The Downing Street Memo" won't tell the listener what it is about. One of the media sources has to do a full scale review of the time frame of this memo, what it actually said and the time line of the other pre-Iraq invasion set-ups. This should include Richard Clarke's story about Bush coming to him right after 9/11 and asking how they could tie the attack to Iraq. Until someone puts this into a perspective the American people can visualize this is going to just be something called "The Downing Street Memo", which, by the way, sounds like something that only concerns the British, and it, like other "smoking guns" will die without further comment.

MoveOn-Conyers Petition

Just in case you're not aware you can go to the MoveOn.org site and sign onto Conyers petition to the Bush adminstration to own up to the memo.

Does anyone remember Richard Clark. Former Bush Co. employee who quit after 9/11 because he was fed up with their blatant disregard for life and safety? How after he quit wrote a book explaining a lot of the failings of Bush Co. and most importantly now, that Bush Co came into office looking for a way to invade Iraq. He was on talk shows, in the news, 9/11 hearings, was disparaged to no end by the soulless neocons.
This is nothing new in reality. The only thing new is there is now a document of irrifutable proof of the crime.

But you will see the spin doctors work their magic. I believe Bush will come out of this one. He'll have some wounds. He'll loose followers. But the really blind, stupid and myopic will continue to bleet to the neocon drum of suffering.

88 Representatives in government stand between us, and possible nuclear extermination.

Truth is an unknown entity in the regime of George the unjust.

A group with the appearance of a bunch of transylvanian ghouls now head our intelligence agencies. What is to be done?

Think, Think early and Think often. Think also that this regime is not legitimate, it did not win the first time around, nor the second.

Think of how they will be removed from their positions which they use to exercise wrongful and criminal misuse of power.

Think that power is not a brick to be lugged from place to place, but rather a process that vanishes, when the supporting responses cease.

Think of a world in which we humans will not support the criminal misuse of power.

Think of the 'Gods' who have Damned to perdition, this, the most intentionally malign political structure, in the human record.

They are not really 'Gods', merely higher level powers that are so advanced that they appear to be Gods.

Think that the 'Gods' are on our side, and think also of the coming end of this criminal regime.

Think also that these nuclear war criminals have already tried to destroy you, and that is fact. So go ahead, think, just think about that!

Did you not listen when we marched against the charade? Most Americans know Iraq is a huge quagmire and a mistake but as long as we can drive an SUV, who cares? Bring back the draft-enlistments are down by 40%-then maybe you'll see some concern...

I simply cannot fathom how US media have kept such a shameful low profile on truths which foreign observers have been convinced of for over 2 years. Who reads you in the US? Your readership doe not reach mainstream media unfortunately
Hope Goebbels is proven wrong in the end and that a lie is a lie is a lie. But Bush's cold hand is frightening!
Not even angling for Bush's head. Just withdrawal so the killings stop.
Iraq will remain one of the darkest and most damning American Hegemonist Attempts as it was not even part of a difficult international situation such as Vietnam's intervention and therefore more difficult to justify. Pure greed from a corporate President. So incomprehensible for low level concerned citizens such as this writer.
How can this article reach Britain, France, Germany, Britain, Italy, Spain so that people there protesting against Iraq are no longer the Leftist Fringes but Mainstream People?I would suggest slightly left of Center ( Independent, Le Monde, Die Welt, Il Corriere, El Pais and a few Se Asian Papers even English Medium Papers ( eg the Nation in Thailand or Korea Times)
What are the Kerries, Clintons and even Reps like Mc Cain doing to stop the Killing Fields in Iraq?
All guilty. No hung jury. How can they stand by this scandal?
Something is rotten in the US Kingdom.

You know, there's a word you don't hear much anymore in connection with the American government. That word is: ACCOUNTABILITY. We can send our troops to die in a war that was apparently started long before March 2003 and then read news about Bush showing a slideshow and joking about looking for WMDs.
Now, I don't know how pissed off you would be over this type of indignation, but if I had lost a father, son, daughter, husband or wife in Iraq, I would personally be ready to go for the bastards throat.
I applaud John Conyers effort to bring this matter to a head. At least one Representative of the American people still has the balls not to be cowered by these thugs in the White House. And this is your chance, Americans, to show that you too have the balls, ovarys, gonads or cojones to stand up to an admistration that has ruled this nation by fear and lies for the last five years.
Therefore, I appeal to you, Americans, don't let this issue
die! Talk about it, pass it on, do something, motivate yourselves and fight back against the creeping tyranny that
has infected this 'once great nation!'
Shove the Downing Street Memo down the troats of Congress and the President and DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY!

War Crimes

Who do we hold accountable?

Those of us knew who knew all along that this war was a lie must feel some level of comfort now that we are in a majority. Well, for me that's not good enough. Senators like Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry who fell right in line and handed the red button over to Bush have escaped from this unscathed. Why? Because they were lied to? Are you kidding me? I was lied to also, but it just made me angry. The 1600 soldiers were lied to, they ended up dead. I don't want to hear from the Dems that they were lied to anymore, that's a lame excuse.

Who do we hold acountable? What about the media? They still do not want to ask to tough questions. Where is the coverage for the DMS? Maybe the GE war machine cant loosen its grip on reality tv's MSNBC. Maybe the stories will start coming out now that Jr. has left the FCC.

I'll tell you who I'm not ready to forgive:
Those millions of Americans humming along to 'Have You Forgotten' with yellow ribbons wrapped over their eyes. Those people who hurtfully said 'you hate america', while chomping on their apple pies.
You can blame the post traumatic stress from 9-11, you can blame ORANGE ALERT, anthrax, duct-tape, dirty bombs, smoking guns, or Condi's mushroom cloud. There was a campaign of fear, propaganda, and nationalism, but some of us never bought into it. Some of us who tried to disagree were attacked physically, vandalized, or had their reputations ruined. Anybody remember the Dixie Chicks?
I DO NOT welcome anybody on this bandwagon. I'll never embrace the war criminals who patiently waited in front of Fox News television for our soldiers to get gassed in Iraq so they could gleefully shout 'Told you so!'. I will never forget how sour this country was toward those who opposed the war in Iraq. NEVER.
The CIA has fought wars that the public has never known about, put dictators and tyrrants in power. This time, we as a people are not innocent. The American people were behind this war, and the Democrats handed the power over. In turn, we as Americans were behind the afflicted perversions of GITMO and Abu Graib. We as Americans were behind an illegal war and so much death. The american people stood behind a president who made bold claims of Iraqi ties to 9-11, then to Al Qaeda, then to WMDS all the while asking God, in heaven, to Bless America.

I pray that God will forgive America.

Rep. John Conyers with moveon.org have got their half a million signatures today! And while that's something to celebrate, our job has only just begun. We must stand behind Conyers because the Republican attack machine will be out to destroy him. We must demand that the hearing be open session, and not behind closed doors. We must insure the media stays on top of this, and not be diverted by the latest 'reality' show. We must spread the word, incite as much outrage as we can with the American people (of course there will be those who will choose to turn a blind eye) and finnaly we must demand accountability from every member of the Bush administration.

I've been sickened by our approach to Iraq since 1988. I was a very young man then and paid little if any attention to the news but I did hear about the chemical warfare during the Iran-Iraq war. All I could ever think was, "why isn't the world outraged by this?" I thought after WWI that nobody would ever be allowed to use chemical weapons without the rest of the world doing everything possible to stop it. Yet it happened with little reaction from anybody. I believe both sides were using them too.

When the first Persian Gulf War started I was upset too. Around 8/4/90 or 8/5/90 there was a story on Nightline with Ted Koppel about what led up to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Koppel spoke about an Iraqi official talking to the US ambassador about what would the US do if Iraq invaded Kuwait. The US ambassadors reply was "very likely nothing." I watched for more news concerning this and never heard anything about it again.

I read several articles between 1988-1990 in different news magazines about the Iraqis complaining about the Kuwaitis cross drilling thus tapping into reserves under Iraqi soil. It seemed as if all Iraqi complaints fell upon deaf ears. Hussien also liked to mention that Kuwait was an Iraqi province and if you look in your history books you will see that it was. It was carved out of Iraq in 1948 just as Isreal was by the Allies.

I believe if we had good diplomats Iraq could have would have been deterred from invading Kuwait but I speculate that the US may have wanted, encouraged, or allowed it to happen. The US's middle eastern diplomcay has been nothing but a disgrace for years. Look at Iran-Contra. Iran was a evil enemy or at least that's what the Reagan administration always said yet they secretly funded them to fight against Iraq while at the same time we were funding Iraq. What kind of policy is that? Pit people against each other thus weakening them all? That's the only logical thing I can come up with.

I was angered and saddened by alot of my friends in 1991 with their cheering for the "nintendo war". "Aren't we great?" "We're kicking their ass!" None of them were concerned with the death and destruction or what all might be behind this. Maybe this is the way alot of americans think even to this day. Our arrogance and machismo makes me sick! What's so bad about kindness, humility, and goodwill? All war is to me is a sad failure no matter what the outcome.

I've read messages from Iraqis that say things like, "Life in Iraq is fairly good as long as you keep your mouth shut and stay out of politics." They used to have some of the best health care and education in the Middle East. Most had clean water and electricity. All I can wonder now is, "if the US can't make things anywhere near as good much less better than Hussien did, what does that say for us?" We've probably killed far more innocent Iraqis than Hussien ever did. If we had pulled out of Iraq after bunghole said mission accomplished, I think the Iraqis could have done a better job of rebuilding than the US-UK has.

If Hussien was such a threat could he not have been handled with tactical airstrikes on military installations and munitions production? I think he could have with much less death, destruction, misery, and cost. Some mention Wesley Clark could see the folly in this mess and I'm glad he could ,but I have little or no respect for him. I guess no respect. I can't have any respect for anyone that would poison an area with depleted uranium as he did in the former Yugoslavia.

David, I can understand and feel your outrage. Not all of us jumped on the bandwagon or approve of this crap. Sadly though, I think a small majority of people in the US are ignorant or could care less about all this stuff. There is an awful lot of complicity in all this disgrace. Who should be held accountable? First and foremost most of el presidente's administration. Maybe you could say all the senators and representatives who voted in approval of the unpatriot act and the invasion of Iraq. That would include most of congress. :( The fear, propoganda, and nationalism these criminals have fed off of, deserve to be tried for their violations of the Geneva Convention and the UN charter.

I like to think I'm patriotic though. My patriotism lies in the fact some of the greatest ideals ever to come from the mind of man are in the US Declaration of Indepence and the Bill of Rights. It's terribly sad so many people in this country don't have enough love for those.

Why are the Democratic Senators so relatively silent on the Downing Street memo?
Did some top Democratic Senators participate in evaluating the evidence against Iraq, and planning the war? Did they know the evidence did not support the U.S. invading Iraq. Did they know Bush was lying to the American public?

Think back to Kerry's failure during the election to ever intelligently discuss the war in Iraq, except saying he would have sent more troops. He never said that the Bush people had lied to the Senate about the reasons for war.
Kerry's statement last week was that the Downing Street Memo was important, and needed to be addressed by Bush, and that he (Kerry) was going to raise that issue next week (which he did not). Why not take that opportunity to say "This raises serious questions about whether Bush was truthful to the Congress and to the public." But he didn't say that.

It appears he is waiting for the Bush administration to take a position so that Kerry can follow suit, or simply defer to them.
Why is Rep. Conyers pushing this issue while the Democratic Senators are silent? Remember the 2000 election, when not one member of the historically all-white millionaires club known as the Senate would stand up and object to the denial of voting rights to black citizens in this country.
Kerry and the other top Democrats need to be confronted on this issue. If they knew the truth, and went along, they need to fall on their sword, to leave politics, and to be thrown out of the Democratic party. The way things are now, the Democratic Party is unable to protest the war. Even Republicans are now coming out against the war, demanding withdrawal. Why are the Democratic Senators silent? There is only one plausible explanation: at least some of them knew the truth and went along.

Germany before the World War I was what America is now: the richest, most educated with law obidient citizens country.
But Hitler came to power and changed all of this. His weapons were lies, propaganda, hate, fear.
Are we going there?

Impeach Bush!
So the future American Presidents will know that it is the real Democracy in America, and immoral people like Nixon and Bush will be impeached

Come on now folks! George Porgey simply wants to make the world a better place. His heart is in the right place and he's such a chummy kinda guy. So he has a little lying problem. Look at all the democracy and freedom he's spreading about the place. Afghanistan, Iraq, and even now - Iran.

Word has it America might even be next! Just a little while now. We may have to take a peek at your library material first. Just want to get a handle on the kind of things you've been reading. Understand, that you may get plucked off the street by people in black and sent over to Karimov to be boiled alive. Watch yer head now. We may have to slam it into the cement a few times to set you up for the interview. See, us Americans are tough, and this is how we show it all to you poor folks all across the globe.

And, like the vanguard of the proletariat, on the way to pure and blissful freedom we must first turn the place into a locked down religious theme park - the kind that Jesus spent most of his ministry railing against, but hey.

In the meantime, just like Bolton the UN Enforcer, we need a can-do guy in that house on the Potomac. He may look like a rogue, a liar, and a thief who declares unilateral wars against peaceful peoples, lies through his teeth, bankrupts the nation and causes the death and maiming of thousands over a false utopia enjoyed by a very small percentage of the populace.

But, this is only a pretend thing. He's really a friendly, folksy, devout straight-shootin dude, just lark on them carboy movies. So folks, lighten up and stop being a girlie person.

Memo? You wouldn't be a liberal by any chance would you?
