War on Iraq

The comeback kid

Posted by Tai on April 29, 2005 @ 12:51PM

Crikey. How the heck did this happen? Ahmad Chalabi, onetime Pentagon sweetheart-turned black sheep, has been named deputy prime minister of Iraq, giving him control -- at least temporarily -- of Iraq's vast oil reserves.

Chalabi does not seem like the kind of person you'd want in your shiny new government. An accused counterfeiter, convicted embezzler, and all-around waskally wabbit, he has been maneuvering for power in Iraq ever since, well, since ever. Does anybody even like this guy? By the way, Chalabi's nephew has been named finance minister, prompting many to worry about his ties to his tainted uncle (supporters say he has nothing to do with those dubious dealings). Either way you look at it, the Chalabi family has a lot to celebrate; but what about the rest of Iraq?
