The corporate media won't say it and the Obama campaign isn't saying it enough, so we're saying it loud and clear: John McCain is a liar. And so is the woman he now shares the Republican ticket with. Yes, Sarah Palin is a liar, too. Together they are responsible for one of the most inaccurate and misleading presidential campaigns, in a business known for inaccuracy and misdirection. But even by the standards of American politics, the McCain-Palin ticket seems to be in a race with itself to set new standards of low.

This isn't opinion, this is fact. Time and time again, on the campaign trail, in press briefings and in interviews, McCain and Palin flip-flop on the issues, propagate myths they know to be false, and flat-out lie to the American people.

Unlike the McCain campaign, we have to back up our assertions, so here is a quick, short and cited list of the top 20 lies, myths and flip-flops that have come from the McCain/ Palin ticket so far.

1. The Myth: McCain and Palin claim to be agents of change.

The Truth: In a desperate attempt to revive McCain's "maverick" reputation, the McCain campaign is trying to co-opt Obama's slogan. But "change" is a tough act to pull off when your record almost exactly matches the current president's. According to a study cited by the Huffington Post, John McCain voted in keeping with the president's positions 100 percent of the time in 2008 and 95 percent in 2007.

2. The Lie: To burnish Palin's rep as a down-to-earth, no-nonsense fighter of government waste, the campaign keeps bringing up the state-owned jet Palin put on eBay. Today McCain stated: "You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay -- made a profit."

The Truth: As Politico points out, Palin did put the Alaska-owned plane on eBay. But she failed to sell it. Instead, the state had to go through a private broker to unload the jet and ended up losing money in the transaction. Or, the opposite of profit.

3. Flip-Flop: Offshore Drilling.

Original Position: In 1999, McCain made conservatives very unhappy by supporting a moratorium on offshore drilling.

Politically Expedient Position: McCain can't afford to make conservatives unhappy anymore; his campaign now depends on the rapturous love of a conservative base that is still suspicious of him from when he used to take intelligent positions. So he switched his position on offshore drilling. As Dana Milbank at the Washington Post writes, McCain recently argued that "those very same 'moratoria should be lifted' and proposed incentives for the states 'in the form of tangible financial rewards, if the states decide to lift those moratoriums.'"

4. The Lie: McCain and Palin have said up to 29 times and counting that Palin told Congress "'thanks but no thanks' on that Bridge to Nowhere."

The Truth: Palin strongly supported the Bridge to Nowhere and campaigned on the issue while running for governor of Alaska in 2006. It should also be noted that she never actually got the chance to tell Congress "no thanks," as Congress killed off the project, choosing instead to give a lump sum for all of Alaska's transportation projects, money that Palin gladly accepted.

5. The Lie: McCain keeps repeating, over and over and over again, that Obama's tax proposals will hurt the middle class.

The Truth: Obama's tax policy cuts taxes for people in the middle-income brackets, while his plan would increase taxes only for those with a family income above $250,000 and individuals who make more than $200,000. Not exactly the middle class.

6. The Lie: McCain falsely claims he received every award from every veterans organization.

The Truth: Despite saying it again and again, McCain is flat-out lying when he claims to have received the highest award from every veterans organization. As Think Progress reports:

He received a grade of D from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and a 20 percent vote rating from the Disabled Veterans of America; Vietnam Veterans of America noted McCain had "voted against us" in 15 "key votes."

As for the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars -- with whom McCain claims to have a "perfect voting record" -- both groups vigorously supported Sen. Jim Webb's (D-Va.) GI Bill that McCain tirelessly opposed.

McCain is a veteran politician too

And as such, finding position adjustments and even down right flip flops is an easy task. There isn't a single politician that has been around for more than a few years that you can't find something on. That's the nature of the game. That's not exactly an excuse for him necessarily, but it is to say that claiming there are flip flops is kind of a non-story.

This article is a prime example of how we can twist things just a little bit and make a misstatement or slip of the tongue combined with slight position change appear to be a diabolical lie. If you were to take an honest look at McCain, he may be a lot of things, but a liar is not one of them.

I could give you a top 20 list of Obama/Biden "Lies, Myths and Flip-Flops" too but that would be an equally non-story.

What I like about the McCain/Palin ticket is that they are both have a real clear history of going up against cronies and doing what they believe to be right. I haven't always agreed with McCain, but I respect and admire his resilience and his chutzpah.

To me, Obama seems to be much more of a talker than a doer. In the few years that he has been in the Senate, he hasn't done anything of note. Also, the things that he promises to do if elected are wrong headed.

I don't know if McCain/Palin is going to follow through with all their promises, but I would rather take a chance on them than on the likelihood that Obama might actually keep some of his.

In addition to lying, McCain distorted his so-called heroic POW record.
Posted by: VetAgainst McCain on Sep 12, 2008 1:14 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
For decades, John McCain talked very little about his POW experience. In fact, several years ago, McCain's official Senate Web site did not list his medals and awards for valor.

McCain's apparent modesty vanished when he decided to run for the presidency this year and began exploiting his POW record.

The most blatant example is McCain's "refusal" to accept early release from North Vietnam, which he claimed was his "greatest test of courage."

The truth is, he had absolutely no choice in the matter. First, he had been ordered by his senior U.S. POW camp commander not to accept repatriation. Second, if McCain had disobeyed the order, he would've humiliated his family and ruined his Navy career.

In June 2008, former POW Phillip Butler, who spent over eight years in captivity, wrote about the predicament in Military.com this way:

John was offered and refused "'early release." Many of us were given
this offer. It meant speaking out against your country and lying about
your treatment to the press. You had to "admit" that the U.S. was
criminal and that our treatment was "lenient and humane." So I, like
numerous others, refused the offer. This was obviously something
none of us could accept. Besides, we were bound by our service
regulations, Geneva Conventions and loyalties to refuse early release
until all the POW's were released.

On September 4, 2008, while giving his GOP nomination acceptance speech before a rowdy Republican crowd, McCain shamelessly played his old POW card again -- from the top, middle and bottom of the deck.

The low point came when he boasted that his bravery had been challenged, but not Senator
Obama's. How more absurd could McCain get? A white man of privilege asserting that in
America's Caucasian-dominated, prejudiced society, a black man never faced a test of
courage!

What about every waking day of Barack's life, having to appear in public with a skin color different from most people around him -- the "Mark of Cain," as evangelical Christians whisper in private.

John McCain should be ashamed of himself for making such a denigrating statement about his opponent. Obama's activism in South Chicago shows he has more compassion in his little toe for the plight of impoverished Americans than does the egocentric Arizona senator have in his entire, pumped up, flag-draped body.

All the lying attack ads...

...make me glad I don't really watch regular programming and/or that I live in Chicago where the GOP doesn't waste its money.

Because if I had to see the ads I have viewed online or read about every day, more than once, I might have to break my T.V. And then there would be glass all over the floor and I'd probably cut myself. Yet another tragic casualty of Republican cynical, manipulative campaigning.

The Republicans have nearly ruined our country - unfathomable national debt (every man, woman & child owes $300,000), illegal war which murdered tens of thousands of innocent people and killed our own young, brave soldiers as well as traumatizing countless others as a direct result of this debacle, our standing and influence in the world - we are seen as BULLIES - attacking a sovereign nation without imminent threat is unforgivable, lying to the American people about the reasons for going to war with Iraq, the spying on Americans without going through due judicial process WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW, unitary executive powers (study it - it's SCARY and BUSH used it to expand the executive power), signing statements (the Constitution says the legislative branch writes the laws and here we have Bush saying in essence that he doesn't agree and is exempted from certain parts of the law), and there's MUCH more that the Republicans have done these past 8 years to degrade us in EVERY WAY. Did McCain prevent any of these from happening?

Do not trust McCain/ Palin to fix this mess - the Republicans are the ones that caused it. We need fiscal responsibility back. We need intelligence in governance. We need respect and influence back. We need DEMOCRATS in office!!!!!

Palin reminds me of Iran in the 1978

Her language, her behavior and her action is so similar to the fanatic religious zealots of the Hezbollah of Iran before the revolution that she scares the hell out of me.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/12/

At times visibly nervous, at others appearing to hew so closely to prepared answers that she used the exact same phrases repeatedly, Ms. Palin most visibly stumbled when she was asked by Mr. Gibson if she agreed with the Bush doctrine. Ms. Palin did not seem to know what he was talking about. Mr. Gibson, sounding like an impatient teacher, informed her that it meant the right of “anticipatory self-defense.
...
“I’m ready,” Ms. Palin answered without any hesitation in an interview with ABC News on Thursday, saying she had felt no doubt about accepting Senator John McCain’s offer to run as his vice-presidential nominee.
I answered him yes, because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can’t blink,” Ms. Palin told her interviewer, Charles Gibson. “You have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we’re on, reform of this country and victory in the war.

So, what has Obama done?

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
One of the McCain camp's favorite anti-Obama screeds is, "He hasn't done anything". That's simply not true. Here's an example of what he's done as a Senator, in fact the first thing he did in office. It directly relates to making the U.S., and the world, a safer place. For the complete article, go here http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/568/

"Obama's first foreign travel as a U.S. senator was with Lugar in August 2005, when the two men visited nuclear weapons storage and dismantlement facilities in Russia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

The following spring, Lugar and Obama authored a Senate bill that authorized the president to carry out a program to provide assistance to foreign countries to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The bill does not specifically list different types of weapons of mass destruction, but we'll take as a given that it includes nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

The larger part of the legislation was a separate measure to stop the spread of conventional weapons, notably shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles that the legislation refers to as man-portable air defense systems, or MANPADS.

The bill's provisions were incorporated into a House bill that passed later that year and was signed into law in January 2007."

If you investigate just a little, you'll find that he's done several good things, despite being in the minority party.

McCain, on the other hand, has voted overwhelmingly in lockstep with Bush, and unless you're one of the 29% that approves, you'll realize what a disaster that has been.

A tip of the hat to the future senator from Minnesota....

The fact of the matter is the nasty reality that the GOP cannot - under any circumstances - run on their ideas. Why? Because their "ideas", so to speak, are atrocious.

Right now, they are claiming that Senator Obama has been "disrespectful" to Sarah Palin thoughout this campaign. That's how desperate these con men are....Excuse me, I meant "con persons". With all that is happening to our once-great nation, what do these assholes have us debating?

LIPSTICK ON A PIG

Now doesn't that just make you feel all warm and squishy inside?

Now for the $64 question: Are the American people going to be stupid enough to fall for this garbage? As insane as the electoral process has become in the last twenty-eight years, as mind fuckingly dumbed down as the electorate has become - anything is possible.

I am quite surprised that Obama has actually proven himself to be more mature than the Mccain/Palin camp. And darn, too many good 3rd/Independent candidates. It drives me crazy that there's Nader and Mckinney and alongside Paul. I mean I love all these independents but I just wished they'd join together as one united Progressive/Liberal Independent Party. As of now, none of these 3rd party candidates are doing or saying anything new or the anti-two-party sentiment would be up by now. Oh well, I might just come back and give it up and vote Obama/Biden or just sit it out. Who knows ??

All I can say is politics has become too fucking childish and America needs to GROW UP !

As a former infantry officer in the U.S Army, I'd like John McCain to be held to the military's honor code, which applies to all officers and to all academy students:

"An officer will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do."

We need to start showing up at all of his events and throwing this in his face.

On Myth #1: McCain and Palin as Agents of Change
Posted by: Roy Eidelson on Sep 12, 2008 6:32 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It’s only fitting that a truly memorable demonstration of human gullibility will mark its 70th anniversary just before Election Day. On the night of October 30, 1938, thousands of radio listeners concluded that Orson Welles’ adaptation of The War of the Worlds was the real thing: a live account of Martian invaders landing in Grover’s Mill, New Jersey. Those fooled by the show’s air of authenticity exhibited signs of panic and hysteria. Some called the police for guidance on how they could protect themselves. Some fled their homes for greater safety farther from the invasion site. And some listeners fainted beside their radios. Within hours the hoax was fully revealed, and public outrage swiftly followed.

Today, Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin seem intent on creating similar mass confusion for their own purposes. Because in promoting themselves as agents of change, they’re clearly hoping that voters will mistake fantasy for reality. After all, during a 2005 Meet the Press appearance McCain himself claimed, “On the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I've been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.” And according to the non-partisan Congressional Quarterly, last year he voted in line with the president 95% of the time -- more than anyone else in the entire Senate. But given the president’s abysmal approval ratings as the election approaches (29% in a recent USA Today/Gallup Poll), it’s really no surprise that the McCain-Palin campaign is working so hard to spin their “maverick” yarns.

Unfortunately, their plan could work. Research psychologists have found that fictional narratives can be especially powerful vehicles for persuasion. Even when we know that the stories are untrue. Drawn in by our emotions, we’re simply “transported” by the setting, the plot, and the characters -- in part because a well-told tale helps us make sense of our own personal experiences. The problem with our susceptibility in this particular context is that we become easy prey for political predators more focused on victory than truth-telling.

When unable to separate fact from fiction, we voters can’t possibly make well-informed choices. Yet as citizens it’s ultimately our responsibility to weed out the pretenders. Between now and November 4th, a tenacious independent media could make our task much easier. But this would require that the media resist the lure of false narratives while demanding substantive answers to substantive questions.

If nothing else, the past eight years should have taught us one thing: a poor choice in the voting booth can lead to consequences as catastrophic as an invasion from Mars. So before pulling the lever for right-wing candidates touting their credentials as reformist agents of positive change, first look around to see whether the Martians may have already landed.

In these the days of political "truthiness", it is best that we all do our due diligence and look into what the facts and truth really are! It is a shame that politics have sunk to new lows, brought about by "Rovian" style politics! But then a willing populace, America has become, is primed for these pumps (or pimps take your choice)!

As Americans many of us have either forgotten or are too busy in our own lives, so we assume the media will give us the "truth"! I don't think we in this country realize how bought and paid the corporate media has become! It's all about the money, and which way it flows. Those with money are willing to do anything to protect the status quo as long as they are making a profit!

You must read this essay that was linked from Judith Warner's column in the NYT http://edge.org/3rd_culture/haidt08/haidt08_index.html

All who think the repugs are just ill informed need this perspective. If Dobson or Bush or even Palin say the moon is made of green cheese, then it will become the new battle cry. Some followers may even suspect it's not true but at their next convention all will be shouting "Green Cheese, Green Cheese" And the very thing that will solidify that notion is some pointy head liberal pointing out that that green cheese moons don't exist. They're not dumb. They're just loyal beyond all logic.

If I were you, I would keep your childeren away from McCain and Palin.

I hope all the sexual predators in prison don't get an early release if they are elected.

People need to keep a close eye on Sarah Palin. Her childeren are in danger. That could be how her daughter got pregnant. It might be her own dad's. But if not, she might have psychological problems if she was a victem of child molestation.

Then last week, a Fox News on-screen graphic referred to Michelle Obama as "Obama's baby mama"--slang used to describe the unmarried mother of a man's child. It was a clear attemp
