Less Than Half the World Believes al Qaeda Was Behind 9/11 Attacks

An international poll released this week by the Project on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) found that outside the United States, many are skeptical that al Qaeda was really responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks.

Sixteen thousand people in 17 countries -- allies and adversaries in Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East -- were asked the open-ended question: "Who do you think was behind the 9/11 attacks?"

On average, fewer than half of all respondents said al Qaeda (although there was significant variation between countries and regions). Fifteen percent said the United States government itself was responsible for the attacks, 7 percent cited Israel, and fully 1 in 4 said they just didn't know.

Among our closest allies, very slim majorities believe al Qaeda was the culprit. According to the study, "Fifty-six percent of Britons and Italians, 63 percent of French and 64 percent of Germans cite al Qaeda. However, significant portions of Britons (26%), French (23%), and Italians (21%) say they do not know who was behind 9/11. Remarkably, 23 percent of Germans cite the U.S. government, as do 15 percent of Italians."

Whatever one thinks of "alternative" theories of who the perpetrators were that day, the results are an eye-opening indication of how profoundly the world's confidence in the United States government has eroded during the Bush era. The researchers found little difference among respondents according to levels of education, or to the amount of exposure to the news media they had. Rather, they found a clear correlation with people's attitudes toward the United States in general. "Those with a positive view of America's influence in the world are more likely to cite al Qaeda (on average 59%) than those with a negative view (40%)," wrote the authors. "Those with a positive view of the United States are also less likely to blame the U.S. government (7%) than those with a negative view (22%)."

Interestingly, Americans are also dubious, with more than a third of those polled by Scripps Howard News Service in 2006 saying it was "very likely" or "somewhat likely" that "federal officials either participated in the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon or took no action to stop them" because they "wanted the United States to go to war in the Middle East." The poll didn't, however, distinguish between those who believed the government actively participated in the events of that day or merely had foreknowledge that the attacks were imminent. (Another poll that year, by CBS News and the New York Times, found that fewer than 1 in 5 Americans believed the government was being fully forthcoming about the attacks.)

In one sense, these findings should come as no surprise. America, like other countries, has been known to conduct "false-flag" operations before. And it has used falsehoods to justify going to war. In the now-infamous "Gulf of Tonkin Incident" -- the incident that would be used to justify America's involvement in that conflict -- a minor skirmish occurred between U.S. naval ships and two North Vietnamese coastal vessels. Two days later, the Johnson administration reported that there had been a second attack, which it claimed was evidence of "communist aggression" on the part of the North Vietnamese. But, as a National Security Agency report revealed in 2005 (PDF), the second incident -- the one that created a "pattern" of aggression -- was invented out of whole cloth. "It is not simply that there is a different story as to what happened; it is that no attack happened that night," reads the report.

In 1990, on the eve of the first Gulf War, Pentagon officials cited top-secret satellite images and said definitively that Saddam Hussein had amassed a huge army -- with 250,000 men and 1,500 tanks -- along the Saudi border in preparation for an invasion of that country. Jean Heller, a reporter with the St. Petersburg Times, purchased some Russian satellite images of the same piece of desert and found that in fact there was nothing there but sand. After the U.S.-led attack, a "senior (U.S. military) commander" told New York Newsday, "There was a great disinformation campaign surrounding this war."

Those incidents are in no way analogous to the attacks of 9/11. But in 1962, the Joint Chiefs of Staff proposed to Defense Secretary Robert McNamara that the CIA might launch a series of terror attacks within the United States, blame Cuba, and use the ensuing panic to justify military action against the defiant island-nation. (The plan, called "Operation Northwoods," which became public in 1997, was reportedly killed off by John F. Kennedy himself -- it got that far up the food chain.)

Yet, whatever the historical context, there can be little doubt that the Bush administration's penchant for secrecy and well-documented dishonesty fuels the debate over who perpetrated the attacks of 9/11. Earlier this year, an independent study conducted by the Center for Public Integrity documented 935 lies mouthed by senior administration officials to gin up support for the invasion of Iraq (one of which was Donald Rumsfeld repeating the long-disproved claim that Saddam had amassed a huge army on the Saudi border in 1990).

the "9-11 Truth" people...

..are going to have a field day on this thread.

Michael Moore, in his book "Dude, Where's My Nation," probably gave the most rational explanation for how/why 9-11 happened:

9-11 was ultimately an attack on the USA by Saudi Arabia...specifically, rogue elements within the Royal House of Saud. This explains why members of the Royal Saudi family in the USA where escorted out of the nation the day after the attacks in spite of a total lock down on US airspace.

Everyone should read the book: "House of Saud, House of Bush," by Chris Unger. Ultimately, the USA has made a pact with the devil in coddling the medieval, corrupt House of Saud...Every president since Eisenhower has been sucking up to this profoundly anti-democratic regime. The Bush family went beyond this to basically adopt this family as its own.

To "really" examine how/why 9-11 happened would necessitate exploring the relationship between the Bush family and House of Saud (as well as past presidents). This cannot be. Diversions must occur: Iraq.....and creating a psy-ops operation called the 9-11 "Truth" movement...a movement meant to intercept rage against Bush into theories meant to discredit the Left.

The question isn't who attacked us on 9/11 but WHY?
Posted by: VetAgainst McCain on Sep 11, 2008 11:41 AM

Being a retired person, I have time to research the Internet for answers of questions the media seems uninterested in asking. Such as WHY were we attacked on 9/11?

I have no doubt that Osama bin Laden targeted the World Trade Towers. As for WHY, I can only speculate -- as follows:

If one thinks the way the Bush administration does, the answer seems obvious. Osama wanted to kill as many Americans as possible. Certainly he took pleasure in that, but my examination of bin Laden’s history indicates that 3,000 deaths on September 11 was simply “collateral damage,” a Pentagon euphemism for killing innocent human beings during wartime.

In the Twin Towers case, I believe Osama had only one thing in mind: making a political statement the world would never forget. Simply put, Al Qaeda members were not afraid to die for their cause. What better exclamation points to Bin Laden’s unspoken proclamation than two smoking holes in a high-rise complex representing his most hated enemy: Western capitalism.

Imagine if the Twin Towers had not fallen. First, the loss of life (collateral damage) would have been in the hundreds, not thousands, resulting in less outrage by the free world.

Second -- and this is what I believe bin Laden really wanted -- both buildings would have stood long after 9/11, covered by huge canvas shrouds to hide the 757s’ entry and exit wounds.

Condemned as permanently unsafe for human occupancy, how long do you suppose it would have taken to dismantle the steel-columned structures? I’m guessing years, thus creating a lingering, painful and embarrassing reminder of Osama’s evil organization. What better billboard for Al Qaeda than an abandoned World Trade Center?

Conspiracy theories aside, if you are skeptical about my 9/11 scenario, consider this fact. No one in the United States, not even the Twin Tower architects, knew the buildings would collapse after being hit by the hijacked airliners. It took engineers months to determine that the dual impacts had dislodged fireproof sheathing around steel girders and columns, allowing them to be weakened by intense heat from burning jet fuel. Because of the information gap, we can reasonably assume the 9/11 Al Qaeda planners were equally ignorant about the Twin Towers’ inherent weakness.

Aside from being unforeseeable, I contend a structural collapse was the last thing Osama wanted to happen. The pile of smoking rubble not only cost him his New York marquee, it gave America hallowed ground for launching a global counterattack against his terrorist network. Unfortunately, George W. blew the opportunity.

PS: I just watched a missing NVA video of POW McCain that was released today by a Swedish journalist. The tape was made in 1973, just before McCain flew back to freedom from North Vietnam.

In the crystal clear, full-color video, McCain walks with only SLIGHT limp -- WITHOUT crutches -- past on-looking NVA officials. Smiling, he stops and salutes a uniformed American officer. At no time does McCain appear discomforted.

So why was the admiral's son famously photographed on crutches when he later met with President Nixon? To make the Manchurian Candidate look like a crippled war hero, which he was NOT!

9/11 was the result of 50 yrs Corp Business Practices

Can't quite fully accept this admin planted denotators- but I'm willing to hang it on them anyway.
What I am confident about- as I have been since 9/11- is that day was the accumulation of anger and outrage after 50 yrs of Multinationals (Oil) Corps helping the 'friendly' ME Oil 'royals' oppress and abuse their own people.
The target were classic Military Industrial complex Sites ( WTC- financial Dept, Pentagon- military Dept and WH/Congress- Foreign policy Dept)
If Terrorist were After US - they would have focused on sites which average americans vacation at (Disney world), or use only a regular basis(Malls), Or a monument we all hold dear to our hearts (Ellis Island & the Statue of Liberty).
Add to that the phrase 'Hates Us for our Freedoms': who has been responsible for the Seizing our freedoms & Rights- This Admin.
This admin (and other Corp whores) spend more time recounting the effects of 9/11 on this Country than the supposed terrorists who had such a 'victory' that day do Glorifying it!
If the alleged scenario is true and Binny lives in a cave, while Oil Execs are rolling in profit margins...Who benefited from 9/11 More visibly and profoundly?
Let's take a quick review of the last say 30 yrs..1970'sIran Hostages (pissed about US involvement in the region), Numerous Highjackings (PLANES), Oil Crisis (put on a sweater & turn down the heat, Odd/even fillup days),1980's Iran contra- found out Reagans people were dealing behind Carters back - trading Arms for hostages. Then '93 WTC, then the Cole,.....
'Never thought they would highjack planes and use as Bombs'...What ??Lockerby? How fucking stupid are They? They're Not.. They ignored the obvious and all the red flag warnings. That makes them culpable.
today they are pounding their chest about 'No further attacks' Really- what about that 'mad Scientist'...Why do they constantly refuse to admit our Homegrown Terrorists. What about the huge bombing of the Federal building?what about the unibomber, the kid who was putting pipebombs in mailboxes, and now the infamous sociopathic scientist they had employeed in the Base most involved in biological Agents!
Everytime i hear those BS Corp whores dishonor the memory of all those lost on that day, makes me want them that much more in Orange jumpsuits and shackles- The more they Talk the more they give evidence to their own complicity in the HIGHEST Crimes Ever Committed against Our country- TREASON, decades Worth!

And not just about 9/11 but about all that has happened over these last 8 years.

The 9/11 Commission was a farce and everybody knows it.

We need Federal Prosecutors with subpoena powers and unlimited security clearance to investigate the whole Bush Legacy.

Obama and McCain are eerily silent on all of this.

He probably died years ago that's why they used his name and why they haven't found him yet and likely never will. He had been in Afghanistan at some point giving Americans an excuse to invade that country. The idea that the Afghan people would sacrifice their nation to protect some Arab foreigner just doesn’t add up like most of the rest of the details of this all too convenient attack. It is known that the neo cons had goals to invade these areas, Iraq and Afghanistan, and what do you know 9/11 happens as George Bush takes office. Everything fell into place too neatly for the imperialist agenda to be anything less than planned.

Does anyone else believe that if Bush had not been elected president this might never have happened? He and his father both had a very close affiliation with the Saudis and they visited back and forth frequently. I don't believe that oil is the whole story. Like most Americans I don't believe the story fed to us by the government. I've read piles of books and papers by experts and still can't come up with a motive, because that would narrow down
the list of suspects. Highjacking 5 planes was not that difficult. This was not a high tech operaton. It worked because we were not prepared. No planes had been high jacked in 10 yrs. A conspiracy, it doesn't matter. It was a simple plan that worked. It still does. After 7 years it remains an open sore and a mystery. 9/11 continues to control more of our daily lives than we choose to admit. I wonder if knowing the truth would help. Thanks, ANNA

But the question on everyone's lips should be on the anniversary of 9/11, is Bush going out with a big 'Bang' in Pakistan?

FOR TODAY he has authorized that US special forces can undertake incursions into Pakistan WITHOUT even the approval of their government.

This is something that he wishes to do and what a better way to leave office than to start a new little war for his friends in the defence industry. Another nice little earner I would say before he leaves office and additional personal security for the future (no I don’t mean our security either) !

There's no such group called al Qaeda
Posted by: Ghoulman on Sep 11, 2008 12:26 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
As far as I know, according to Robert Bauer of the CIA, al Qaeda is a general term used by the CIA referring to foreign fighters, mostly Saudi (wahabi) extremists, during the Afgan war against the Soviet Union.

To the White House and thus all Americans, al Qaeda is a world ranging James Bond baddie organization capable of nuclear attacks and so on. The so called terror of "international terrorism'. What great twisting of the reality.

Why? Because America needed an excuse to control the richest oil fields on Earth. After all, America uses most of it. Washington made al Qaeda a giant threat the same way they made the Soviet Union terrorist bosses threatening the whole world and made Sandinista rebels in the 80s a missile capable threat to American soil. Ronald Reagan even went on TV with maps of the 'threat'. Different pig, same lipstick.

As this article points out, this is typical of American policy and has been even going back to Vietnam. Heck, if you want to go further you could bring up the invasion of the Philippines or the various military coups in Latin America.

The US foreign policy hasn't changed, as far as I can tell, ever. Any powerful nation will invade and steal from it's neighbors. Russia and China act no differently than the USA. The only difference is, it's only Americans that universally believe they are doing 'right'.

Manifest Destiny, I suppose.

The people in other nations aren't so brainwashd by decades of PR selling them the 'American Way'. Some sort of sacred belief of a white bread America with Mom in the kitchen and Dad at work for the corporation.

As a culture, the USA is still fixed in the 50s. Still shocked by sex. Still 100% sure nothing America does is wrong. Still believing that a new car will make one a better person.

You wont see this reported in US corporate news (which is all the MSM is) but before the invasion if Iraq by the USA in 2003 the largest protests ever across the world cried out to stop it. Even in the US, protests were large. I think that demonstrates just how people world wide feel about the USA invading other countries, let alone China or Russia or Americans themselves.

Think about it, even the Russians and Chinese themselves have a very realistic view of what their governments are up too, and have done so for some decades. What's Americans problem?

These protests across the globe were soon attacked by the US establishment. Americans suddenly were told that the Europeans were weaklings. The cruel French jokes (remember Freedom Fries?). How they had all been weak on 'international terrorism'.

As if the French didn't know anything about terrorism.

As this article points out, the rest of the world doesn't believe Americas bullplop. Just as they don't believe Russia's or China's. The only difference between these people and Americans is the culture Americans live in. A culture made sacred by the government and media. A culture where America can do no wrong.

It's these 50's tinged American beliefs that politicians, especially the GOP, use as justification for foreign policy. After all, it works on Americans. They've been trained by the TV to believe that a new car is, indeed, the path to a better life.

The rest of the world seems to have gotten past empty cultural promises, and most likely did in the 60s.

I feel this gap between what Americans believe compared to the rest of the world is a significant point about American culture. A culture the politicians use to gain support for more 'Cold Wars', so to speak. And they get it from Americans, as long as Americans get a new car.

What's the old joke? War is God's way of teaching Americans geography. Somehow, I think only non-Americans laugh at that... if nervously.

There can be no doubt that the US government was complicit in the 9/11 attacks. Look at 911truth.org and other sites (there are truth sites for pilots, scholars, architects, engineers) and learn. Steel sky scrapers do not fall and vaporize at free fall speed as a result of fire-even from jet fuel. There is physical evidence of thermite in particles examined from the ground zero -clear evidence of explosives. Look at building 7. How could ANYBODY still believe that it fell as a result of fire? A plane did not hit it and other buildings were closer. Is it a coincidence that all three buildings were owned by the same person? And that all three had a fantastic insurance policy for terrorist attack? The owner even admitted on a TV interview that building 7 needed to be "pulled". Hello? Where's the outrage?

There are literally hundreds of reasons to NOT believe the official story. If any reasonable person were to look at all the facts, evidence and coincidences he/she would conclude that WE HAVE NOT BEEN TOLD THE TRUTH. Hell, the official story is more of a "conspiracy theory" than anything else out there! We're a laughing stock around the world.

We need a REAL, FULLY FUNDED, INDEPENDENT investigation, with subpoena power! That is the very least we citizens should expect of our elected officials. When and if the truth ever comes out, those complicit will need to be held to account for this tragedy.

Is it any wonder?
Imagine some guys who came from a cave in Afghanistan and hijacked airlines with pin knives. The military did nothing to stop it. No one was fired for this catastrophe.
Guys from caves did this.
Impossible. Never happened. No guy in a cave did this.
Guys with pin knives hijacked planes. Right. Don't believe that one either. Guys took a flight class and knew how to fly a plane. Right. Don't believe that either. Cheney told the military to stand down. Why? No one was fired. Why? How about this line? The towers fell straight down due to jet liner fluid fire that was only burning in the top floors. What happened to the lower floors? They weren't on fire.

I think that our government did this as an excuse to go to war and take other people's oil. Period. It needs to be investigated for real, and those who really are responsible need to be hanged for treason.

It may be that future generations will have to uncover what really precipitated the actions of those men that hijacked those plans and wreaked such death and destruction. What we do know is that there was forewarning, and that this Mis-Administration failed to heed them. Was it intentional disregard, was it incompetence, was it all just a ruse to force an unwilling populace into these (fiascoes) wars of choice, by a corrupt, crony-driven, mentally bankrupt, morally deficient, militaristic regime!? I'd have to go with the latter!

Unfortunately, the American populace has been whipped into a frenzy of patriotism! Patriotism that has been used and continues to buy the false-prophet lies these idiots continue to pull out. The really sad part is that the real lessons that should have been learned, not just from that day, but from all the days since have not been learned by the American people. If they had McShame would not be able to use his "military service" in running for the Oval Office without a crowd laughing at him. If those lessons had been learned, then maybe the ultra-compliant MSM would really be on their job, asking the tough questions, and Bushco would not have been voted back into office! If we all had really learned the lesson, than this bunch of thugs would be on trial for violating the Constitution that they all swore to uphold and defend!
