Number of sentences in John McCain's acceptance speech about his experience as a POW in Vietnam: 43.

Number of sentences about his 25 years in the House and Senate: 8.

The convention ended as it began: a commemoration of McCain's hellish years in a Hanoi prison cell four decades ago. The political equation was a simple one: POW equals patriotic hero equals a fighting president. Before McCain walked down the long runway at St. Paul's Xcel Center, a baritone voice declared over the P.A., "When you've lived in a box .... you put your people first." Case closed.

But there was a speech to get through. And before McCain arrived at the climactic I-was-a-POW finale, he delivered, in wooden style, a no-better-than-par speech that was mostly a series of traditional GOP buzz phrases: lower taxes, cut spending, open markets. He noted, "We believe in a strong defense, work, faith, service, a culture of life, personal responsibility, the rule of law, and judges who dispense justice impartially and don't legislate from the bench. We believe in the values of families, neighborhoods and communities." (Just not community organizers.) Was the speechwriter who penned Sarah Palin's acceptance speech too busy to work on McCain's?

Unlike most speakers at the convention, McCain acknowledged that some Americans are facing tough times. "I fight for Bill and Sue Nebe from Farmington Hills, Michigan, who lost their real estate investments in the bad housing market," he said. "Bill got a temporary job after he was out of work for seven months. Sue works three jobs to help pay the bills." And he said he would fight for Jake and Toni Wimmer of Franklin County, Pennsylvania. "Jake," he explained, "works on a loading dock; coaches Little League, and raises money for the mentally and physically disabled. Toni is a schoolteacher, working toward her Master's Degree. They have two sons, the youngest, Luke, has been diagnosed with autism." But how would McCain help these folks? Moments later, he offered a dumbed-down version of his economic plan: " I will keep taxes low and cut them where I can. My opponent will raise them. I will open new markets to our goods and services. My opponent will close them. I will cut government spending. He will increase it." (By the way, many analysts and journalists have repeatedly noted that Obama's economic plan would cut income taxes far more than McCain for Americans below the top 1 percent.)

Over and over, McCain cited his love of country and his dedication to the nation that "saved" him. He tried to present himself as the candidate of change, who wants to transform "almost everything: from the way we protect our security to the way we compete in the world economy; from the way we respond to disasters to the way we fuel our transportation network; from the way we train our workers to the way we educate our children." (He did not explain why after eight years of a Republican administration the country needs so much change.) McCain reminded the GOP delegates that he has on occasion challenged his own party. His domestic policy ideas, the few he offered, did not rouse the crowd -- except when he called for more oil and gas drilling. In response, the delegates once again enthusiastically chanted, "Drill, baby, drill!" It was one of the biggest shout-outs of the night. The audience was notably silent when McCain called for boosting alternative energy sources.

Maverick, fighter, fixer -- McCain said he was all of that. But, above all, he was McCain the warrior who had returned home. He had fought for the country once before -- and he had suffered. He will fight for it again. "I have the record and the scars to prove it," he declared. "Senator Obama does not." Wave the bloody shirt.

McCain denounced the "constant partisan rancor that stops us from solving" the nation's problems. But this week McCain had commanded a convention that had reprised the standard GOP playbook of spin and fear. Speaker after speaker accused Barack Obama of plotting to raise taxes on middle-income voters. They portrayed Obama as weak, indecisive, inexperienced -- particularly concerning national security. On the final night, retired Lieutenant General Carol Mutter, denouncing Obama's stance on Iraq, told the delegates that the United States' "enemies don't talk about timelines for retreat." Yet the United States' ally in Iraq -- the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki -- has called for a timeline for withdrawing U.S. troops. (Whoops: reality.) Repeatedly, GOP speakers claimed that Obama is not a man who can handle evil. "We cannot afford a president who thinks you can negotiate with evil," proclaimed Representative Mary Fallin, an Oklahoma Republican. But didn't Ronald Reagan negotiate with the Evil Empire? On the first night of the convention, the delegates watched a tribute film to the late President Gerald Ford that celebrated his negotiation of an arms control treaty with the Soviets. (A onetime negotiator-with-evil, Henry Kissinger, was sitting in the V.I.P. section as Fallin spoke.)

Why must a nation appropriate its integrity by suggesting that being held captive against ones will is symbiotic of heroism, patriotism?
Heroism means being able to make choices that reflect the integrity of the greater good of the society at large, and patriotism the love of all people and their beliefs no matter how different from yours.
To declare incestuously the desire for peace but to reiterate the wanton willingness to engage battle and not dialogue against our enemies is either sheer hyperbole for a frightened(and who made them frightened them after all....?) audience or the insidious green light to pick a fight and go on installing hegemony against fledging countries wishing from some degree of respite from US imperialist dogma, usurpation and the desire to create myths, indoctrinate fallacies (to go to war in Vietnam , a country 20 000 miles away to preserve our security....and let's not forget our freedom, forget about their freedom).
This election contest is a sham, OBAMA is not leveling with the constituency either, how can he when his corporate backers and the hegemony in play has already something playing on the turntable.
Mccain reminds me of Mcdonalds, that eating your good honest cheeseburger made here in the sweat shops of minimum $6 an hour sweatshop is good for you, almost fat free and a mark of patriotism.
Integrity requires making sacrifices with your will not being held against your will.
Thanks for the baloney John, but spare us from the humiliation and the 'maverick' notions, you're as maverick as a cheeseburger that's been served for the billionth time.....

"The audience was notably silent when McCain called for boosting alternative energy sources."

This tells us a lot about the crazy, destructive irrationality of Republicans. They should know that alternative energy is a hot business opportunity that could make lots of people rich. But, no, they would rather "Drill, baby, drill." Jeesh.

GREAT Speech!!

In it, McCain and his voice over told the "love story" of John and Cindy McCain. How in the spring of 1979 he was at a conferene in Hawaii and met Cindy and it was love at first sight; poor 1st wife, Carol, was still married to a starry-eyed Navy Captain in "puppy love" excitement of his gorgeous new girlfriend, Cindy!

Wasn't it sweet that the two true "soul mates" waited and got their marriage license shortly before Carol and John's divorce was final? See? That's family values, the ethics and personal character that is part of the reason we LOVE John McCain.

I loved how he talked security and never letting our military down because he has been in the military and knows "true patriotic love of country;" then forgot how he wasn't around for the new VA/GI benefits bill or how torture, including waterboarding went from something the prosecuted in the War Crimes trials to "enhanced interrogation?"

I'll choke the next person who proclaims, "I put country first not me" or speaks about " or "country first! We all KNOW they are applying for the only party/ people who loves their country. Lies and more lies.

Yup. I'S IS 8 more years of "straight talk" and then i in see how the Straight Talk Express" has swerved and wavered at ever opportunity.

Straight talk an common sense.

We mustn't forget what we think is "common sense" is to them another opportunity to capitalize by using it to make more money for THEM; after all, that is what

I saw a movie that closely relates to his rise to politicdom. Guy goes to military, guy has heroic service in a war, guy comes back to states where some other guy of relative importance and power helps him use his service to gain a political office. Can't remember the flick to save my life though.

When McCain came back from the war and moved to Arizona, he ran for office. In debate, the incumbent queried the audience.

(not exact quotes here)

"What does this man who has just come to the state know about the issues of the people of Arizona?"

Damn fine question.

McCain responded something to the effect..

"I do apologize I've not been here long, I've been in the Hanoi Hilton."

Wash, rinse, repeat..he's running for President. Americans are suckers for war heroes.

Like John Kerry did in 2004, he makes a big deal about his days "serving" in Vietnam but worse, he exploits it all the way. IOW, to us moderates, independents, liberals, and even reasonable conservatives sick and tired of wars and nation building via destruction, he says

"Just look at my 'honorable' record in Vietnam. Don't ask me about Iran. I suffered in Vietnam so I shall make all you losers suffer more by imprisoning you American LOSERS in Iraq for the next 100 years. I can be a Big Oil WHORE if I 'feel' like it and to hell with alternative renewables even though I may throw a bone or two at it."

Ask Senator Mccain about his so-called "Campaign Finance Reform" bill and he won't want to tell you the truth that as a result of the law, elections have become more costly, dirtier, and even PRIVATIZED for the corporate interests.

People, you cannot bring "democracy" to another country especially when there is none of it here at home ! Wake the FUCK up !!

This clown has been "upped" by a nobody from Alaska that represents his only hope of getting elected. Palin has already been dubbed as the future of the GOP. Current state of the economy and foreign affairs? What, don't blame me....I'm still getting over the mistreatment administered by my captors. Now, I would be a helluva lot better off if I had been sentenced to that bastion of compassionate incarceration at Gitmo....but it didn't happen so let me figure out where I live and I'll get back to you....or Sarah will...or maybe Lieberman will...or...what did you say Lindsay? I got it, I got it, play dumb....works for me!

Sen. Biden can't say this because it would be dismissive of McCain's experience, and red meat for the right wing nuts. But, other than bashing Sen. Obama, this was the GOP convention theme. Giuliani's "vote for me because I was in a certain time at a certain place" logic was even more credible relative to our current issues than this same logic McCain is using. It does not speak to his judgement or wisdom. Yes, he lived through torture, but 30 years later he condones the use of torture, knowing that it produces falsehoods; admitting he lied under torture himself. And the fact that he has not supported legislation for increased funding for the care of our soldiers when they come home is an outrage!

The essential question John McCain must be forced to answer during this campaign is, how would his administration differ from that of George Bush. His speech provided no insight into that.

We must all continue to press the question.

republican lexicon: "bipartisan"...
Posted by: lexicon on Sep 5, 2008 7:40 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
McCain did two things. He said, "I'm the candidate of CHANGE". Hmmm...sounds vaguely familiar. Where have I HEARD that before?

Second, he promised to "end the partisan rancour" and work in a bi-partisan way.

I've heard that from a republican too...let's see if I can remember...OH yes, it was from GEORGE W BUSH. HE has been the most "bipartisan" president in our entire history.

That is, if you understand how he DEFINES "bipartisan". When "speaking republican", the word "bipartisan" means, "there are two sides to the issue, our side, and the wrong side. We use any and all means and procedure necessary to push our side, and any and all means and procedure necessary to force the other side to utterly capitulate."

So, when a REPUBLICAN says "bipartisan bill" what he MEANS in REAL ENGLISH is that:

The bill was written by a K Street lobbyist team...

The bill made it out of committee on a 12 republican yea, 11 democrat nay vote...

The bill was sandbagged with poison pill ammendments and earmarks from republican members...

The 2072 page bill was made available to the House members 2 hours before the scheduled vote...

The bill was voted for on a voice vote, and passed...the democrats demanded a roll call vote, and the result was 240 republican yea, 221 democrat nay...

The process was repeated in the senate...

The reconciliation committee for the bill was convened off-hours, off-site, and off-calendar, so unfortunately, no democrats showed up...

The final copy of the bill was available to the House and Senate 2 hours before the scheduled vote, and it was now inexplicably 14 pages longer than it had been the night before...

The filibuster threat by the democrats on the final vote was met by loud protestations from republicans, decrying the "utter lack of bipartisan spirit" in their democratic colleagues...

And the President signs the bill, which, incidentally, has a title that pretty much describes exactly OPPOSITE what the bill is for.

that about covers it.

McCain/Palin - A recipe that is not plagiarized...
Posted by: djnoll on Sep 5, 2008 7:45 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
because no one would ever want to be associated with it! I listened to the speeches last night, and I have to say that for delusion it was wonderful, but for reality it truly sucked. Let me count the ways: No serious solutions to energy crisis; still disconnected from rest of economy in America; still claims to support vets and soldiers; still talks about education or special needs children but does nothing on both; and the topper - condemns Russia for invading Georgia, drawing a comparison that sounded exactly like our invasion of Iraq!

As for the POW thing - enough already - we get it! And so does every other returned POW or family member of a MIA or family member who lost someone in Vietnam. It is not relevant to your qualifications to be President, Mr. McCain - it is exploitation of your circumstances and is not justification for your delinquency in addressing the needs of the American people while pandering to your lobbyist friends. Your service record is at best questionable, at worst treason - but because of who your father and grandfather were you got away with it. This does not qualify you for the Presidency.

And while you are pushing this cow Palin on us, maybe you would care to explain how your first wife deserved less than fair treatment from you and your trophy wife with the trust fund. Or perhaps you can explain why your children from that first marriage had to live on meager child support and their mother has to live on less than $2500 per month (that is well below your $5,000,000 a year middle class level, sir) because you will not claim your true income under Arizona community property laws and pay her the kind of spousal maintenance she deserves for being abandoned by you! She did not abandon you while you were a prisoner - YOU, SIR, ABANDONED HER! Forget falling in love with America, sir, you should have stayed in love with your wife and honored your pledge to her, not some whore whose Daddy bought and paid for you! That is what being a real man means!

As for Palin, this woman is not a pitbull with lipstick - she is a wolverine with a bad hairdo! Wolverines are one of the few animals in nature that will kill their own young without provocation. She tried to cause a miscarriage or stillbirth with her actions towards Trig in utero and in most places, she would be reported by her ob for child abuse. Her feeding up her daughter to the press to deflect her own questionable actions is unforgivable. Trotting poor Trig out as a campaign prop is grotesque! That child is highly susceptible to infection in his first few years, and he does not need to be used as a trophy for the governor's anti-abortion stand. If she wants another trophy, she can take her guns and go kill another helpless animal - her child is no more acceptable game than any of the others she has murdered. Make no mistake, her form of hunting is nothing more than murder. Real hunters hunt with respect for their prey - airplane hunters who go after wolves and other animals are not hunters, they are killers!

I watched last night, and unlike the night before when I cried for this nation, last night I saw our future under these two, and I knew we are lost! I was reminded of the crazed shouting of Adolph Hitler at the end of his speeches, encouraging the Germans to march on into battle. I saw a man screaming about fighting, the causes lost under the word "Fight" repeated over and over. If we do not wake up and see this madman and his killer partner for what they are - the world will make us see in ways we do not want to even consider.

One happy note: Sarah Palin's speech on Wednesday night generated $10M in donatins in one day for Obama on Thursday. Who knows, maybe she is the best fundraiser Obama ever had?

One set forth a message of change and hope, a promise of what could be and road map of how to get on the road to there.

The other looked to the past yet removd the recent past, it talked of fear and offered no look into the future and provided to road map to get beyond the past.

Who says there is no differnce between the parties.

I almost lost my voice I was so ticked. If anyone heard concrete policies for the economy, education, health care, anything concrete; not the "I'll fight for you" stuff, Please let me know. Come on all you Conservative watch dogs who want to call us evil, you should be able to come up with something from last night!! My 3 pound Yorkshire Terrier will fight for me too, doesn't mean he can save this country on the road straight to hell it is heading down!

How wonderful it was to see Cindy McCain working so hard in other countries to help the dieing and suffering. In all seriousness it is an admirable thing; yet I was struck by the fact that she wasn't in a homeless shelter talking to emotionally and physically wounded veterans that her husband claims he represents. How about a battered women's shelter, an inner city emergency room, or even an elementary school that is struggling to give kids the intellectual tools they need to stay away from the gangs standing just outside the door. Hmmmmm....guess we don't have anyone that needs anything here. I am studying education with an emphasis on special ed as well, did anyone see her hanging out with parents of children whos disabilities are so severe they can't afford to pay for the basic necessities because the child needs good care? You think she would use her knowledge from that Masters in Special Education she has to put it to good use. Just a thought.

You have voted against any and all attempts to make life better for the returning vets. They do not have acces to the quality of care that we Americans provided for you. If that doesn't bother your conscience than despite your "bravery", you are a coward. You stood up to the VietNamese, but you won't stand up to George Bush. Shame on you. ANNA

Why would that be? Not really interested in McCain's POW stint? Heard it all before? Or nothing to say in defense of such an tactic, so unrelated to the job of president?

My Lt. Col. husband is as sick as anyone of McCain's endless blather about being a POW. Yes, we admire people who went through ordeals. But there is no relationship to what he needs as president.

And as Stephen Colbert put it, if POW camp helped McCain be a good leader, that makes Guantanamo a Leadership training Academy.

1. Drink a lot of very powerful liquor.
2. Engage 'mute' button.
3. Whenever his lips move yell: 'Hey you kids, get off my damn lawn!' .
4. Repeat until election day, or, God forbid, the the next four years, or until he s**ts the bed and Eva Braun assumes command. Whatever comes first.

For McCain, A Decent Speech, But Also Creepy
Posted by: taxidriver on Sep 5, 2008 9:31 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Like him or loathe him, McCain did OK. The highlight was his talk about his experiences as a POW, and how these changed him. He sounded sincere, and it resonated with his audience.

But most of his speech was insipid and boring. The biggest applause line was his call for more drilling. Nothing was said about conservation or cutting consumption. (No surprise, of course.)

But what was really creepy was the audience: older, almost entirely White, eager to chant "USA, USA" like they were attending a sporting event. And as the fake fireworks exploded and the country music began, I just despaired for how phony the Republicans are, and how easily, it seems, that many Americans are fooled.

Just one more observation: Did you notice the body language of Cindy and John McCain? How they generally keep their distance from each other? Contrast this with the Obamas, who hug, kiss, and talk with spontaneity, as far as I can tell. Oh, sorry, one more: Were Republicans trying to win "the most kids" contest? McCain with 7, Palin with 5. Geez, the Obamas only have two kids -- can't they breed more?

Sigh.

And in the left corner, representing Corps/neoliberals are Mr MBNA Joe 'Fuck-the-working-family Bankruptcy law' Biden and

Who wrote McCain's "speech"? It was empty and void as if a kid just wrote zeroes on his math answers.
For months no reporter ever asked him what did he learn about foreign policy while held captive? This cornball was dropping bombs on the North Vietnamese and he's called a (bleep) HERO?! Is his chest top-heavy with too many medals?
When he gets in trouble, like his campaign, out comes the POW card. ("Phew! this gets me out of danger like Popeye's spinach.")
I kept waiting for him to say something worthwhile, but all I kept hearing was references to his past. He couldn't rouse a roomful of 50-something males auditioning for a Viagra commercial with Hooters girls conducting interviews.
McCain is like a pro quarterback who thinks he can still play, but his time is running out. The sand in his hourglass is almost at the bottom. He's lucky to get a second crack at occupying the White House when the GOP knew he wasn't their "homie."
Finally, the best part of his soliloquy was the ending. The cameras caught people staring into space or nodding off. They had a disinterested look on their faces, feeling a little let down for the want of red meat. I'm glad I wasn't a delegate to this spectacle. I would have had to have been inebriated or stoned out of my mind to be there. Those folks looked BORED! Even Palin kept looking away. The energy it took to muster a few feeble applauses.
Let's hope that will be his last speech.

Word Counters

Who are these idiots who sit around counting words and sentences whenever someone speaks? Don't these people have a life or what? Good grief, like it makes more difference how many times someone says "run" than it does that he's telling you to run. Some people can speak volumes with just a few words, others can speak thousands and say nothing, a skill politicians, and lawyers, are very practiced at Some phrases are self descriptive and don't require as many sentences, some are alien and require more to paint the image. This crap about someone said one word twice as often as he said another is all media drivel bull shit. Obama, when he's not giving a scripted speech, uses "um" and "uh" and "ah" an awful lot, so let's see, he said "um' twice as often as "uh", but "ah" only twice, what can this mean? It's all media distractions, full of themselves newscasters eating up air time, meanwhile the real issues are missed. It all gets pretty sorry when someone is so desperate to write anything that they reduce themselves to this level. One of the problems we have is too much analysis, we form committees to form commitees to pick apart every sound and fart and form another committee to evaluate what the real intent of the first committee was, and we get nowhere, no results, and the major problems dealing with the important issues like health care, social security, jobs, just get pushed off from administration to administration. Too much analysis, too much nitpicking, too little action.

McCain knows his countrymen well enough to realize they scarcely can remember what happened a few weeks ago, much less what happened years or decades earlier. H continues to be the champion for the merits of a foolish war in Vietnam that seared the souls of a generation, and of course he favors more war in the Middle East.

The pity is that he's forgotten those "traumatizing" POW experiences as the US is now torturing others at those well hidden blacksites! He forgot about that as he voted against pay increases for the current service members! He forgot about the lies about the Gulf of Tonkin, that took him to VietNam! No McShame should forget about running for the White House, because dementia has already set in!

Over and over, McCain cited his love of country and his dedication to the nation that "saved" him.

Rather than "love the country that saved him", I believe he LOATHES the country that put him in harms way in the first place. AND he DESPISES those in charge of the country at the time who left him there for 5 years and then took away any CHANCE at revenge on his ENEMIES and wishes to RECTIFY that by taking it out on any substitute. He's of the old-school attitude "If it was good enough for me, it's good enough for everyone."

It seems what we are really doing is creating a camp full of heroes like McCain down in Cuba. Now if they all turn out like McCain because of their years in an American POW camp and then go home I assume they will do the same terrible job as leaders as McCain has been.

Sorry. While I respect McCain's time as one of over 600 POW's that was a circumstance, not a qualification for office. I'm sure they did not teach civics, law or political science in the Hanoi Hilton.

What once was just noise has since become an ear-splitting Roar; and static has escalated into an Elect-Obama-rified Storm.

When the deluge of passionate invectives and rancorous verbiage ultimately subsides and we find ourselves drained of thought and emotion, I hope we remember how to once again enjoy silence and relish the welcome calm that I pray ensues.

Until then, I'm well-equipped and prepared to ride this nauseatingly hyperbole-laden, roller-coaster of cacophonous conflict into a better future. With fearless resolve and fist-clenched hands on arms held brazenly aloft, I welcome and embrace the change for which I have fought in solitude for much too long!

Wake UP - Be NOT Afraid - Our Eight Year-long Nightmare Will Soon be Over!

The new-found Republican fanaticism for more offshore oil drilling is another in a long line of scams.

What is the incentive for the oil companies to solve America's energy crisis by drilling offshore on a massive scale? These multinational companies are getting their money selling foreign oil to the U.S.! Do you really believe they are going to invest billions in offshore drilling in the short term so Americans can pay less at the pump?

They want the rights to the offshore areas for future exploitation and they want all the government tax incentives they can lay their hands on. The Republican formula is to have you give billions in tax cuts to the top 1% and fund billions in future tax incentives (if not outright grants) so the oil companies can charge you exorbitant rates for gas and oil for as long as you and your grandchildren shall live.

Yeah, Baby, this is what we really need. And, hey, even if it doesn't work, at least we can say we kept those top tax rates low and avoided excessive regulation and oversight! It might even tithe us over until we come up with the next scam!

Damn, these guys are good!

I got THE Call last night
Posted by: JohnJlws on Sep 5, 2008 4:07 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Immediately prior to the speech of mediocrity I received a call from the RNC asking me to help them spread the “truth” of “the Maverick’s” message and defeat the “liberal” media. The nice little girl on the other end of the line nervously read the end of her snake oil salesman’s appeal by asking me if I would contribute $100. Having been a registered republican most my life I said very politely to the nice little girl on the other end of the phone:

“I’ll donate not one thin dime. I have been a republican for most my life. Even during the Nixon debacle I have not been as embarrassed of this party as I am at the moment. ‘The Maverick’ needs to get off simply saying ‘Obama is horrible’ and try to explain one positive thing he would bring to this country. ‘The Maverick’ needs to show by action a single decision he has made that might be even remotely construed as leadership and in the best interest of my country because the selection of that grating, fingernails on a chalkboard mayor/governor isn’t it. So, no I will not donate to this worthless cause, not one thin dime.”

If we want to end this debacle that represents the current imbecile (and I mean no offense to imbeciles) in the White House the way to do that is not in the blogosphere. If every single person who blogs here will make ten phone calls and insure all ten of those people go vote for Obama and insure those ten people call ten more and those ten…then this long national nightmare will end and we can finally be rid of this Roverian Reich that has become the very definition of obscenity.

It is time for this tragedy to come to a close, but it isn’t happening in the blogosphere, possibly the biggest single waste of time and resources ever devised. Go make some phone calls, please; Get Out The Vote!

Almost Everybody, when criticizing McCain, adds a qualifier about "not questioning his heroism", "honoring his service to his country", blah blah. This occurs as much on "liberal" blogs and directly from their mouths, all the way to (publicly, at least) Obama. BUT isn't the historic truth that the Vietnam War was a criminal, imperialist act of unjustified aggression by the US, and McCain a mass-murderer from the sky, and nothing more? Just another cog following orders, the essential characteristic of the military. Why the praise from people who should know better, who supposedly have some understanding of and respect for history, and antimilitarist attitudes?

Ping Pong

Like every other Western Traveller who visits Northern Vietnam, I visited the Hoa Lo prison in Hanoi, nicknamed the Hanoi Hilton.
I watched the Japanese tourists photograph themselves in some of the shackles that have been left there for pretty much that purpose.
In spite of all that the country has to offer, people still mostly associate it with the horribly misnamed Vietnam War.
The Chu-chi tunnels near Ho Chi mihn City have actually been widened to allow us fat westerners to crawl through them... what an irony.
Visiting the prison in Hanoi is an interesting experience in viewing the war through a different prism.
We see sketches of the Vietnamese were treated in the French period and it aint pretty... torture is hardly a recent American invention, although the US army has been particularly innovative in recent years.
But then the photographs from after the fall of Dien bien Phu tell a different story.
The American prisoners all seem well fed and contented, wearing clean t-shirts and looking quite healthy.
The one that always sticks is my mind is of them playing ping-pong.
It hardly squares with the stories American soldiers like John McCain tell of endless torture.
I'm not suggesting for a moment that John McCain spent his five years in Hanoi playing ping-pong.
The winners - in this case the North Vietnamese - write the history books and curate the war museums.
When I went to the Alamo I never heard it mentioned that the anglo settlers had actually been invited by the Mexican Government... quite an oversight.
Nevertheless, it does raise questions about why the media has swallowed McCains story so supinely.
Where are the 451s challenging his account as the swift-boaters did 4 years ago.
No-one asks why he McCain looked so healthy when he was released compared to say, Bosnian Serbs who weighed around 100lb when held in Serbian prisons.
Everything is relative, of course, and the Hanoi Hilton may have seemed just as bad as Austwich to a Rich American like McCain.
But I really think an American Network should actually visit the Hoa Lo, experience the warmth and hospitality of the Vietnamese people, and see their side of the story... wouldn't that be fair and balanced?

And of course the tortured prisoner, who now advocates torure is just so much more qualified to steer the ship of state. My my the septagenarian hero and the lying lipsticked pitbull-leaders for our time, huh?
