So far, Republicans have toed the party line on Sarah Palin, obediently parroting the McCain campaign's tenuous claims about her "experience" and "qualifications" to be vice president. At least publicly. A microphone mishap today during an MSNBC news segment revealed what some conservatives really think about the latest addition to the Republican ticket. At the end of the segment the cameras stopped running, but the pundits' microphones stayed on and caught former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan and former McCain adviser Mike Murphy excoriating the McCain campaign for picking Palin. When asked if Palin is the most qualified for the job, Noonan stated in no uncertain terms "No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives." Murphy went on to label the pick "gimmicky" and "cynical."

"It's over," concluded Noonan.

Noonan's prognosis is not surprising considering the alarming information about Palin that has surfaced since her nomination -- not just the soap opera stuff about her family life, but serious issues that call into question her skills, judgment and preparedness for national office.

The past day has brought even more bad news for Palin. Consortium News reports that Palin ran her campaign for lieutenant governor from her mayoral office -- a clear violation of campaign ethics laws.

Over the past two days AlterNet has compiled two lists of revelations about Palin, and our readers, much like Noonan and Murphy, have some pretty strong opinions. Many readers have weighed in on our comment boards, touching on everything from sexism to religion. From those who questioned her preparedness to those who think her nomination is an impressive Rovian tactic, here's what our readers had to say about the GOP's VP pick.

Many point out that Palin makes sense on the Republican ticket, since she shares her party's penchant for inconsistency and hypocrisy on matters of morality and religion.

Taxi-driver points to the strange disconnect between Palin's religion and her policies:

How can anyone pray to God for a gas pipeline? How can Palin and others of her ilk call themselves Christian? How can so many Christians go along with this? What Obama needs to do is to talk about true Christian values -- charity, humility, service, even (I daresay) love, and expose Palin and her crowd for what they are: impostors and charlatans who think God should work for gas pipelines in Alaska.

Ydothehatus takes on the absurdity of Palin's abstinence-only stance, especially in light of her daughter's pregnancy. They also point out that for all of Palin's talk about the importance of family, she is exploiting her daughter for political gain:

Palin ... believes in "Abstinence only Education" -- now her daughter is a poster child for this discredited myth ... she is further exploiting her daughter by forcing her to get married at such a young age, and using this pregnancy to rally the anti-abortionist core of the Repuglicans.

Many readers point out that regardless of her beliefs, Palin is simply not prepared for the job.

Badkitty writes:

Has anyone here ever been to a small town city counsel meeting? I have, and being the mayor of a small town in the middle of no place can NOT prepare anyone to be president or vice president! It is ridiculous. Palin knows nothing whatsoever about foreign affairs. We are at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. ... Health care? Home mortgage banking crisis? The economy in general? How about constitutional law? No? They got nothing. Palin's got nothing.

Foreverhope also points out that so far we have not gotten a sense of what -- if anything -- Palin thinks about foreign policy, the environment, health care and other issues that should be at the forefront of the election:

I would like to see her opinions on the illegal wars of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan, what's going on in Pakistan, trade policy (and is Alaskan oil really sent to Japan?), the mortgage meltdown, infrastructure collapse, the economy, taxation, the bloated and unnecessary military ... the environment, especially, if she doesn't believe in man-made climate change or global warming, just how does she propose to address the issues of weather change (drought in the West, melting permafrost, stronger hurricanes, more tornadoes, etc.)?

He was angry because he actually wanted Lieberman as a running mate.

So he picked someone really bizarre to show Rove (who wanted Romney as VP) who was boss.

Liberal blame thyself

Liberals who sanctimoniously picked the far-less-qualified but very cute Barack over the seasoned and experienced (but just too middle-aged and confident female) Hillary need only look in the mirror for blame if this spiteful, dull-witted woman ascends to the White House.

How many liberal/Democrats chose Barack because deep down, they just couldn't stomach the prospect of a competent, confident, mature woman running the show? Who did Hillary think she was, studying and speaking authoritatively on complex issues...in an unflattering pantsuit, no less!

"The issues" had nothing to do with it, because Mr. Cuteness, as his critics rightly point out, really has no solid position on anything. Those who objected to Hillary on ideological grounds had Kucinich and Edwards to choose from.

Yet Barack won the nomination, and foolishly let his personal feelings keep Hillary off the ticket.

"Good choice," said many on the Left, secretly adding "we can't stand that bitch anyway."

Now Hillary's not looking so bad after the spectacle of Ms. Palin's speech has demonstrated what the foul side of female nature really looks like.

I hope Hillary's already working on her 2012 campaign.

10,000 news articles about Sarah Palin in the last few days. This is insane. Both Democrats and Republicans are totally absorbed by this grandiose distraction. Why? The election is over. It was over many months ago. The System won. It's not about dems and repugs. It's about the System they both represent.

This is the System that brings you:
-A central bank
-Huge deficits that destroy the value of money and force the sale of public lands and infrastructure
-An orwellian police state. Just this morning I heard a story on the mainstream news about another person who was arrested in front of their own home. Can you imagine that? Totally out of control...
-Endless wars of imperialism
-$35 billion dollar mid-air refueling tankers!

Where does it end? Answer: when every single american is poor and destitute, living in a dirt-floor tent in a refugee camp city eating chunks of dried out genetically modified bread every day. And drinking fluoridated concentration camp water. And watching big brother on a giant screen tell you how wonderful things are. How we are winning the war against Eurasia. "Your sacrifices are not in vain!"

I can't believe so many people are buying into this crap. It's worse than ever before. The stench of willful ignorance is thick. The 4th Reich is well on it's way...

It means that if the Dems get off their butt and vote they win. Only problem with that is the Dems aren't much better than the GOP at this point. Politics as usual for both parties. I personaly don't trust Obama to fight the big fight for the american people. So keep calling your reps and congress to try and get some change.

seems that we all are preaching to the choir here, we all seem to know what's up with beauty queen barbie, but the trolls also know too... this is turning into a high school musical all it's own... cheerleader who doesn't get her way makes life hell for those that do not worship her and we're allowing this to happen... how about focusing back on the issues in this election cycle and ignore barbie... this should piss her off so bad that she'll explode, taking care of the entire problem all by her little lonesome...

one thing for sure, beauty queens don't like to be considered ugly, they overreact...

if the GOP wanted to win this election, you would think they would have dreamed up a decent vp short list, it's like they want to fail...

i believe that only the media - liberal and conservative entitites - are using the pregnancy to exploit palin. i think, in the end, all of the coverage and attention to palin is going to backlash big time on democrats.
no offense really to small town mayors who think that there job isn't a big deal but if you think your job isn't a big deal or you don't take your job seriously, i feel sorry for the people who voted you into that position. running a small town is no different than a large city other than you have more subordinates. i would even say that running a small town has some challenges that big city running doesn't.
i think the big issue here is that palin is bringing up some good points on both sides of the ticket. what i find to be more of an issue is that we will harp on a vp nominee about lack of experience in washington yet we nominate a young senator who doesnt have much either. and, let us not forget that mr. bill clinton, a democrat fave, also was not experienced in washington. he too, was just a governor from a small town who played saxaphone on arsenio hall, didn't inhale and didn't have sexual relations with that woman, yet he still was a decent president.
let's start focusing on the issues. please. like, the abstinence only education - it's an ok ideal, but we need people to be well informed on what happens if you decide to have sex; choice - whether abortion, birth control, guns or same sex relations - is something that is sacred in this country; and money - who blatantly says they will raise taxes so the government can do 'good' while another says not raising taxes is the answer. i wish there would be more talk on the issues and less on family matters and beauty pagents.

The answer to the question above

One reader stated they wanted to know Palin's opinion on various matters including the illegal wars of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan. Well, as regards Iraq we already know her opinion on that! In the same sick prayer meeting where she told everyone to pray for a goddamned oil pipeline, she also stated that our soldiers are "doing God's work" in Iraq.

Palin's opinion on our illegal wars is the opinion of a full-blown religious whacko: she IS a crusader and an end-timer. She is of the same mold as General Boykin who thinks "our god is bigger than their god". She is totally dangerous and whack.

It really does show how easily the public can move to another topic. We all know that this woman isn't qualified to be on the national stage! In trying to figure out who this woman is besides being a "pit bull in lipstick" (her words) her actions as reported in the news makes me think she is a Chaney wanna be (that's not good)! As the second in line if the President should become incapacitated, she needs to show more than just clear speaking, she needs to convince people that she is ready to handle more than just a gun! We've already enough temper tantrums, tough talk, hubris, and bravado over the last 8 years! Can we have substance, NOW!

Last night no real substance was mentioned, nothing about the economy, the housing market, climate change (oh, there I go - no science), nothing! As it stands the nominees cannot stand on the record of the current Mis-Administration, and there is no real vision for the future, so let us focus attention on Sen. McShame's service to his country. Gee, from the way they have been talking you would think that McShame was the only serviceman in VietNam that was a POW! And why they would want to reference VietNam is a mystery because we left there in disgrace! Another war that should never have been started, but to say that is not patriotic! So let us just revert back to the fear-mongering and scare tactics that we have come to know and abhor!

I am all for supporting the troops, and if confronted with a fight I will hold my own; but I do believe that these Repugnikans look upon the military as their own private G.I. Joe army to fight anyone they choose that doesn't agree with their "GRAND" view! What hubris, what self-serving grandiose idea of what power is and how it should be used and on whom! These people are frightening, because they really believe in the b.s. "reality" that they have deluded themselves into believing!

The Palin pick energized the base all right... OUR base too!
Posted by: war_on_tara on Sep 4, 2008 7:55 AM

According to the 9/4 daily CNN/Time poll, Obama is up 15% in Minn., 12% in Iowa - ahead even in the far western rural counties that W won by double digits in 2004. Ahead by 2% in Ohio, dead even in Virginia.

Palin has energized the Democrats' base too - much more than boring old Joe Biden ever could! So it works both ways, & is maybe even a plus for us.

She may very well excite a lot of voters in the already safe red states, but my guess is she has backfired in some swing states. True, the VP choice has never been very important... until maybe this time, when the prez candidate is 72 years old.

If Obama does well in the debates, he's probably still got it.

More drama to come - Palin cheated on her husband

HuffPo reports the National Enquirer is running a two-part story in this week's edition and next week's about Palin cheating on hubby. Normally people would not give that rag a second thought except for the fact that now they have credit for breaking the John Edwards cheating story. Apparently, they were crawling all over Alaska long before McDementia's people got up there.

I've never purchased a copy of the NE in my life. However, if this were true, it would certainly explain her mother-in-law's tepid "endorsement": "Other than being a woman and a conservative, I can't see what else she brings to the ticket." Nice, Mom.

Here's the HuffPo link to our own real-live Alaskan telenovela:

If anyone watched the convention last night, it is apparent that the Palin daughter is NOT five months pregnant! She had on a form-fitting dress, with a belt, but no bulge. What I predict we will see is that in perhaps a month is that she unfortunately has a miscarriage. And, we have a mother who felt it was a wise decision to take an 8-hr. plane trip home to Alaska to have 'her' baby? Normally, this wouldn't matter, but it does make one wonder what wise decisions she would make for the U.S. should something happen to John McCain.

A Repeat of 1964 Landslide?
Posted by: LiveFree on Sep 4, 2008 10:05 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The selection of Governor Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate is one more reason why this presidential election might be a repeat of the 1964 landslide vote for Lyndon Baines Johnson.
Branding extremist Senator Barry Goldwater (R-Arizona) as an extremist for his advocacy of using nuclear weapons in Vietnam, Johnson won 61.1 percent of the popular vote.
Born in Phoenix, and a pilot in World War II, Goldwater led the right-wing branch of the party and prevailed in a split-convention battle with moderate-liberal Republicans led by New York Governor Nelson Rockefella.
Goldwater picked a little-known upstate New York congressman and chairman of the Republican Party as his running mate. Anyone remember his name?

A decision by Alaska's first family is raising concerns about a possible conflict of interest involving Gov. Sarah Palin and the oil industry.

The governor's husband, Todd Palin, is back on BP's payroll. Gov. Palin says his return will not influence her decisions involving the oil industry, but one former lawmaker who wrote an ethics guideline for the administration believes it's a bad move at the wrong time.

A few weeks after Gov. Palin was elected, Todd Palin took an unpaid leave of absence from his job as a North Slope oil field production operator.

But, the state's first husband recently returned to BP's payroll.

The above was at http://www.ktuu.com/global/story.asp?s=6965360

So how could we expect her to be objective about oil leases and the hold that big oil has on government when she's got her husband (and his employer) whispering in her ear about what legislation to push? She's a front for them, and is an extremist nut case to boot. Iraq was God's plan? Good grief. What next out of these people?

glorified Eva Braun to last 'til the first debate.
I believe she's a temp; tossed out there to rev up the basest of the base!
Before we know it she will step down for the sake of her family, etc. Then McCain can whine that he tried; and blame the media and the Dems for picking on the girl. UGH!
