GOP's Plan for Palin: Reignite the Culture Wars

By Jay Rosen, Huffington Post. Posted September 5, 2008.

Republicans will try to spin Palin's shortcoming into strengths, by revving up the culture wars.

John McCain's convention gambit is now a culture war strategy. It depends for its execution on conflict with journalists, and with bloggers (the "angry left," Bush called them last night) along with confusion between and among the press, the blogosphere, and the Democratic party. It revives cultural memory: the resentment narrative after Chicago '68 but with the angry left more distributed. It dispenses with issues and seeks a trial of personalities. It bets big time on backlash.

At the center of the strategy is the flashpoint candidacy of Sarah Palin, a charismatic figure around whom the war can be brought to scale, as it were. In fact the Politico is reporting just that: Palin reignites culture wars.

I have no idea if the ignition system will work; nor do I claim that "this is what they were thinking" when they made the decision to nominate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Other interpretations may turn out to be truer than mine. This post is my look at the bets McCain and company seem to be placing. I am not recommending the strategy. I am not predicting it will succeed. I think it was improvised, like my description here ...

The storm around Sarah Palin overtakes the story of the Republican convention and merges with it, like a smaller but stronger company taking over a larger but troubled enterprise. Behind the storm a "wave narrative" builds as her appointment generates headlines on multiple fronts. The irresistible force of fact-fed controversy meets the immovable enthusiasm for Palin as cultural object: charismatic everywoman straight from the imaginary of conservative America.

The basic strategy is: don't fight the "crisis" narrative. Rather, do things that bring it on; and in that crisis re-divide the electorate hoping to grab the bigger half.

The evangelical wing, and other social conservatives, are strongly moved by her candidacy. More and more of their commitment to McCain is vested in him through her. As Andrew Sullivan writes: "The emotions involved -- especially among the Christianist base who have immediately bonded on purely religious and cultural terms with Palin -- are epic."

The strategy: sell the epic version of her candidacy. Allow her to become bigger than McCain in narrative terms. And let the two mavericks together over-awe the Republican party, a damaged brand.

Continued bad news on the investigation front adds further drama, new fact streams and more protagonists to the Sarah Palin story. As more comes out about the decision to name Sarah Palin to the ticket, it's harder to see how anyone on the inside thought it McCain's best choice for president-in-waiting.

Strategy: Give no ground, pile on the praise for her performance in Alaska, pump up her governor's experience to death-defying extremes, hope for theatrical confrontation with characters in the mainstream media who can star as the cosmopolitan elites in the sudden politics of resentment the convention has been driven to.

Bloggers and open platforms continue to publish riskier--and risque--material, some of it unfit for family consumption, some of it false, salacious and reckless, some of it true, relevant and damaging, a portion of which is picked up by the traditional press.

Strategy: confound and collapse all distinctions between closed editorial systems (like the newsroom of the New York Times), open systems (like the blogging community DailyKos.com) and political systems, like the Democratic party and its activist wing. Whenever possible mix these up. Conflate constantly. Attack them all. Jump from one to the other without warning or thread. Sow confusion among streams and let that confusion mix with the resentment in a culture war atmosphere.

Jay Rosen has written the most cogent dissection of the McCain~ Palin strategy to date.

Now ... how to defeat this strategy ... I defer to other more qualified people but I would say this, McCain is the one running for President, attack him and try to ignore her.

He doesn't like the left wing democrats because he is a fiscal conservative.

He doesn't like the right wing republicans because he is a social liberal.

Why did we let Ron Paul get out of this race? His anti]war stance combined with fiscal responsibility and demand for no governmental interference in private lives was just the ticket for a good society.

What's misssing from this otherwise solid analysis is that Palin was picked for VP because her femaleness counteracts Obama's blackness.

When Republicans attack Obama, it can be construed as "racism." Had McCain picked a white male VP, the Republicans would have to do a lot of tippy-toeing around Obama's African-American heritage to avoid looking really, really bad. Palin is their weapon: attacks on the Republican ticket by the Dems can now be construed as "sexism," and so the Dems will have to tippy-toe around the gender issue.

Instead of democratic representation, we get cynical exploitation.

Rosen points out very accurately what the basic Republican strategy is. And this strategy works with much of the so-called base. I find that very many people don't want to be confronted with facts, and when they are, they simply refuse to believe them.

In a few responses to an earlier article, there was talk of 25-30% of the population who continue to believe that Iraq was involved in 9/11, who continue to believe that Iraq had WMDs, etc. It's probably a similar percentage who continue to believe that the Bush administration didn't fire and vet judges and justice department appointments according to judicial qualification, but according to support of Bush policies. Probably a similar number still believe that American doesn't torture.

I put much of the blame on the approach toward truth of post-modern discourse. There are no grand narratives, truth is all about perspective, there are no absolutes, etc. It's a wonderful worldview for promoting pluralism, but it also allows a fascist elite to say whatever they want to frighten, cajole and entice an electorate whose moorings have been lost.

I would like to point out one 'error' in Rosen's article. He writes in that crisis re-divide the electorate hoping to grab the bigger half. The Republicans do not care about getting more votes than the Democrats. They only need to keep it close enough to steal without being caught.

Read and learn about third-world oligarchies in order to see the future of the USA.

Women Studies classes are either going to bury this chapter in history or be forced to acknowledge it as Sarah Palin becomes the future of the GOP. She is not your average Republican who would let the Press (Obama Cheerleaders) just pic them apart because she is coming after you.

If we just get the same numbers voting in 2004, McCain wins. Gotta love that Electoral College.

Just like TV! Never mind quality or actual issues. The never-ending election sitcom now features slick (and slightly suspicious) Obama vs the republican rubard couple. Is this really worth watching, or we do we get some beer and popcorn, and sit back til our eyes turn square?

That's the simple double standard to keep in mind. As for culture wars, for the past 40 years, since the GOP know they have nothing to highlight on accomplishments, even on the social front, igniting the culture wars is all the GOP can think of. And just look at the GOP rightwing motherfucking trolls in some of the other articles. They want you to pay no attention to the fact that America is crumbling faster than the Roman empire on both the economic and even foreign policy fronts. Instead, they want you to look at "poor lil' Sarah" as a "hot role model". Never mind that she is a neocon NAZI. Never mind her ethical and even ILLEGAL lapses. Never mind the fact that she sold out her own town and the state in the name of Big Oil and Big Religion. Never mind that she is none more than a combo of Dan Quayle and Dick Cheney with a bra.

And by the way, why are the pollsters even bothering to give either party false elevation in the polls to Mccain or even Obama despite their voting records in the Senate? If the average Joe or Jane looking for a job in almost any profession were to give such shitty speeches like those at the political conventions, they would stand no chance of being given even a second interview let alone the job. Why do we the sheeple allow the two-party duopoly to FUCK America to DEATH ?

I prefer "culture chock," i.e. "the condition of confusion and anxiety affecting a person suddenly exposed to an alien culture or milieu." [American Heritage Dictionary]. Sound like Palin? Sound like McCain? Uh-huh.....book it, but they will get away with it because of the feckless Dipocrits and even worse media. November is coming folks....either we reclaim America then or it will be in the streets with body bags come January and beyond. That will be the true CULTURE WAR!!!!!

What we need the Democrats to do is come up with solid examples of McCain and Palin's phoniness and show them for what they are. Palin's handlers got the endoresments from Stevens yanked off her website, guess she won't be a witness for the defense.

Was hubby a member of a party promoting ALaska's seceding from the Union?? And since such a big deal was made about Michelle Obama's comments not being patriotic enough it deserves EQUAL TIME. I think patriotic Republicans would be concerned about this one too.

Democrats drop the ball on this trying to take the "high road" to the point of not confronting some issues when the TRUTH is what is important. NOT rifling though someone's bedroom but the MUCH more interesting stuff to taxpayers like MONEY and WHAT they actually DID in office and HOW they got there.

McCain/Palin dropped a TV interview when close questioning revealed she had almost no experience with the National Guard in Alaska.

Palin let slip her own arrogance with insinuating that small towns are somehow better than cities. That was pretty divisive and smacked of racism. Large cities are made up of smaller neighborhoods and groups which are really small towns. Being unable to find a job, having a child out of wedlock with no support, unable to afford college is miserable whether in a small town or a city. If Ms. Palin thinks she doesn't have to represent everyone in this country she doesn't deserve to be running for VP.

Things to do:
MASSIVE boycott of corporate media by anyone not wanting to see 4 more years of this bunch.
Write their advertisers let em know you will NOT buy their products. Same goes for companies that bully their employees politically.

COMMUNITY organizing, Local campaign meetings, phone banks, letter writing, local newspaper letters, etc. Slow down the feeding of the corporate media that is no where near fair or balanced.

Start shunning products and companies that promote/benefit from the present regime's antics. For example don't drive somewhere on the weekend, stay home or use public transportation. Start thinking about ways to keep your hard earned money from supporting this.

They have nothing. They didn't think past the convention, they are making it up as they go along. When HAVEN'T they used culture to divide us? Have they ever done anything else? I must have missed it. McCain can have the angry white vote, and it won't win him the election. It is shocking their convention lineup represents the best and brightest of the GOP. Their party is dying, and we only have to look at the attendees of the repug convention to understand exactly why, too much in-breeding.

No matter how many dazzling performances she gives on the campaign trail, no matter how many flattering endorsements of her selection as John McCain's running mate, and no matter how many conservatives and evangelicals come forward to defend her against news media revelations, Governor Sarah Palin is still unqualified to be president of these United States of America.

As I sit here reading about the McCain/Palin speeches and the disconnect with the average American, I came across a comment that suggested organizing at the community level. Great Idea! Show that b***h Palin what community organizers she slammed can really do! But we have access to a larger community and we need to activate it, loudly and clearly - and not just for Obama/Biden, but for America.

This election cycle has shown the power of the Internet in more ways than could ever have been imagined, and is still unimagined by the McCain camp. So let's make the Internet our community! I am asking everyone to ask their friends, their fellow Americans, to make videos and up load them onto MySpace, YouTube, and any other video venue you can find out there. Get out the truth about what is going on in your hometown that is attributable to this current Administration.

For example, since Mama Bush does not like filming returning dead from Iraq and Afghanistan, ask the families of those who have died in your community if you can please post a notice, with picture of the coffin, on a YouTube video as a way of letting America know just how deadly this war actually is, along with a picture of their loved one and their story to show what has actually been lost in this war for oil. Part of what ended Vietnam was the constant media coverage of returning coffin ceremonies!

Put up pictures of your hometowns where plants have been shut down as jobs were outsourced.

Show pictures of where the wealthy live, then show the foreclosures in your community or the homeless or the ghettos.

Show the number of people in emergency rooms or free clinics because they cannot get medical care otherwise.

Show how the local family farmers are going out of business because they cannot compete or because local grocery chains will not buy their goods.

Show us, America, what your hometowns are like under the Republican rule. Then demand that this change. Make sure that you note the differences between the two parties and their candidates as to how to address the problems that face us: energy, jobs, the environment, the disabled, the elderly, education (including sex education), food safety, and national security. Make sure what you say is based in verifiable facts, and then ask your communities to band together to elect someone who can actually work to solve these problems, not just on the federal level, but also on the state and local level.

The Internet is a community, and it is time we started showing Sarah Palin that community organizers can do a hell of a better job than a corrupt, lying governor from Alaska! Bring her down! Bring down her senile partner! We need to act and act now! Show them what a real community organizer can do! And make sure America sees the truth on the Internet, especially since MSM is never going to do this job!

**If you do not have a video cam for videos, start a personal web page through your ISP or use MySpace or some other personal page provider, and write about your towns and your neighborhoods and let people know the cold hard facts. We are not living in the privileged America of the McCains and the Palins and The Bushes. It is time that they hear, read, and see that for themselves, right along with every Independent and fence sitting voter in America!

That McShame put this woman out here to conflate his nomination is old and divisive! Was this to try and gather the Democratic women that voted for Hilary? Was putting her name in the hat to coalesce the Christian conservative vote? Or was this whole ruse just that - a ruse to divert attention from the fact that McShame has no vision for how to get this country moving in a positive direction!

In any case he has done just that, with a very compliant MSM that doesn't question any of her actions or his! Far from being "the liberal MEDIA" the Repugnikans label them as; the MSM will probably give her the same pass that they have given and continue to give W. The ways that they contort the English language to redefine every situation to their advantage is not only astonishing, but incredulous!

Had Sen. Obama's daughter been the pregnant, unmarried, teen can you image the drama that would have ensued? But, as these are the Repugnikans - this is now a "family matter", because after all they will be getting married (probably by shotgun, but all's well)! The very hypocrisy is just blatant!

There still has not been a vision, plan, issues affecting the people of this country discussed! Neither of these Repugnikans have talked substantively about the economy, real energy alternatives, the housing crisis, the war, the returning veterans, the de-regulation that has led to both the financial and housing crises, nothing nota zip! This is still about culture! Let me buy you a clue - if this country fails (ala the Roman Empire), then we won't have to worry about the culture!

CNN has posted on their Web site a story that Palin transferred between colleges five times before finally getting a BA in journalism.

Palin's college record

It's not known why she made so many transfers, but transferring five times to get a BA is extreme by anyone's standards.

Why do Republicans have fun and win while Democrats agonize and lose?

Because Repubs are smart about culture and Dems are dumb.

People love stories, not intellectual discussions. People are not dumb. People know that dems are dishonest traitors, lying through their teeth. People know repubs are too but they're more honest about it.

We the People love a good fight and want to be on the side of the winner. We the People are warriors in a war culture. We the People know that our high on the hog lifestyle is based on war.

We the People know that there is no real choice in this election. It's just entertainment, another war movie, produced and directed by elite stormtroopers and their bankster investors.

US the People, if we want to change the culture must realize it can only be done with a better, more exciting story in a more arresting language.

The corrupt patriarchal system is very smart and powerful. It can only be overcome by a direct challenge to its root belief in a language that grabs We the People by their balls and ovaries.

I have started a politcal party and government to do just that. So far I am a party of one and a government of all. I'm crazy like a FOX network of fools.
