What a McCain Victory Could Mean: No Money for Health Care and the End of Our Volunteer Army

By Robert Parry, Consortium News. Posted August 28, 2008.

The price tag for John McCain's war lust would mean virtually every other national priority would be short-changed or neglected.

In judging the shape of a future John McCain presidency, there are already plenty of dots that are easy to connect. They reveal an image of a war-like Empire so full of hubris that it could take the world into a cascade of crises, while extinguishing what is left of the noble American Republic.

McCain has made clear he would continue and even escalate George W. Bush's open-ended global war on Islamic radicals. McCain buys into the neoconservative vision of expending U.S. treasure and troops to kill as many Muslim militants as possible.

McCain's tough talk -- for instance, his joking about "bomb, bomb Iran" and his vow to pursue Osama bin Laden "to the gates of hell" -- is indistinguishable from Bush's "bring 'em on," "smoke 'em out," "dead or alive" rhetoric.

Beyond the words, McCain's global war strategy is as hawkish, if not more so, than Bush's. In late 2001 and early 2002, McCain took the lead in pushing the neocon plan of a rapid pivot from the invasion of Afghanistan toward the prospective invasion of Iraq.

Even before the Taliban had been thoroughly defeated -- and as the Bush administration was failing to chase bin Laden to the gates of Tora Bora or to the gates of northwest Pakistan -- McCain was advocating a diversion of U.S. intelligence and military assets toward Iraq's Saddam Hussein, who had nothing to do with 9/11.

That premature pivot from Afghanistan to Iraq may go down as one of the worst national security blunders in the history of the United States. It has bogged the U.S. military down in two indefinite wars while fueling anti-Americanism around the world and especially among the billion-plus Muslims.

Yet, McCain and his neocon allies have never acknowledged this serious error of judgment, nor has the mainstream U.S. news media demanded that McCain accept responsibility for this catastrophic mistake.

McCain instead gets away with boasting about the supposed success of the recent U.S. troop "surge" in Iraq. (Meanwhile, Big Media stars -- many of whom backed the Iraq invasion in 2003 -- hammer Barack Obama for refusing to accept the conventional wisdom about the "successful surge," as Obama tries to offer a more nuanced analysis.)

So, as the U.S. press corps again gives cover to the Iraq War, the larger failure of U.S. policy goes substantially unaddressed.

Not only did the McCain/Bush/neocon strategy allow bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders to survive and reestablish themselves along the Pakistani-Afghan border, the policy let the Taliban exploit instability in Afghanistan to rebuild its forces and begin going on the offensive against hard-pressed U.S. and NATO troops.

Potentially even worse, the Bush-McCain-neocon neglect of Afghanistan has contributed to worsening instability in nuclear-armed Pakistan, where the Taliban and al-Qaeda are expanding safe havens and increasing influence.

In other words, while Bush and McCain rushed off to war against Iraq over the distant possibility that Iraq might some day have the capacity to build a nuclear bomb, they allowed disorder to spread in Pakistan, a country that already possesses nuclear weapons.

Future Draft?

Another casualty of McCain's endless Middle East wars, which soon could include Iran, would almost surely be America's volunteer army. Though McCain officially opposes a restoration of the draft, it is nearly impossible to envision how his multiple wars could be waged without one.

Not since 1932 has the dire need to go in a new direction been as painfully obvious as it is in this politcal year. And yet (AND YET???) the two candidates (McCain and Obama - just in case it has slipped your mind) are in a virtual dead heat.

What the hell is wrong with this picture?

What we have here dear people is a textbook example of the jaw-dropping stupidity of the American people.

Think about it for a minute or two. How the hell is it going to look to the rest of the world if we reject a brilliant, vigorous statesman who has gained the respect and admiration of the entire planet over a senil old bobblehead. Seriously, we're gonna look like a nation chock full o' nuts, facists and racists, don'cha think?

As was the case three quarters of a century ago when the people wisely send a disabled son of privilage named Franklin Delano Roosevelt to the White House, Barack Obama promises to be a VERY different and refreshing kind of president.

John MaCain is not the type of leader the times demand. Barck Obama is. Can it be more painfully obvious than that?

Wake up America....Then again, I'm kind of preachin' to the choir here on AlerNet, aren't I?

Cheers!

John McCain Needs To Answer One Question

The Republican party of 2000 picked Bush over YOU for the general election. Assuming 20/20 hindsight does not apply, why does this prove the competence of the majority of Republicans NOW? The majority of Republicans are 8 years older, how are they 8 years wiser? The majority of voters, one might say a SUPERMAJORITY, agree that George W. Bush is the worst president they've ever known, possibly for all time. Why should we trust an egregiously incompetent Republican party to pick a good man, since their recent outings have consistently reaffirmed their inability to identify a DEFINITION of "a good man". Pick any one of these questions. Get Cindy to help you. Have a beer. Hire another foreign lobbyist.

PS: For new AlterNet visitors, Scotty was banned from Alternet on Saturday by Joshua Holland for calling him a "condescending a--hole."

Wow, I didn't know that! Can't say I'm suprised though. The Alternet cop hasn't been getting his way lately on the immigration debate here, so he was probably looking for someone to smite.

Although I did find "scotty" a bit annoying for pushing his blog all the time, I do think he's right about McCain. I'm awfully curious what McCain will say at his little convention thing...what can that guy possibly SAY? "I promise not to suck quite as much as Bush even though I don't know much about economics?" I mean REALLY. WHY is McCain in a tie race with Obama? Are Americans really that whacked? Can we stand another 4 years of mayhem? Is America going to vote in favor of another 4 years worth of murder, terrorism, oil-stealing, and economic decay?

When all the "hardworking, white, blue-collar collar workers in places like Pennsylvania and Ohio vote for MCain and against their own best interests because of racism (carefully coded by using the words "lack of experience") and there is "... little money left to address the energy crisis, global warming, retooling the auto industry, health care, Social Security, education, infrastructure repairs, etc., etc." I suggest that when there is no money to feed their hungry children, they pass around a bowl of self-defeating racial hatred and see how fast tummies fill up on that diet. When they go to fill their tanks with enough gas to get to work or to the doctor's office, I suggest they fill that tank with good old "McCain experience" and see how many miles they can get on that fuel.

Nothing like being forced to eat your own vote, which is what the average Joe Republicans have had to do for the last 8 years. Unfortunately they seem too stupid to see it and are willing to make the same mistake again over something as minor as the color of a person's skin.

Disclaimer: The following is a comment I left after finding a "Semper-Fi-Tom" comment following a different Alternet article.

It appears we're in for more saturation marketing by/for "scotty" to promote his web site. I have an impression he's in it for his own self gratification (gotta get those “hit” numbers up!); mccain is just the vehicle... which is unfortunate, since I hate to think what this nation will become if mccain even gets his foot in the door of the white house long enough for four more years of republican rule.

As far as someone new duplicating “scotty’s” tactics, I have a few suspicions (especially considering the similarity in writing style). As far as I can tell, Alternet has a loophole whereby ANYONE could have multiple sign-ins – all you need are multiple email addresses (I made certain of this, I just created a new one for myself – which I have no intention of using or abusing.

For anyone who thinks to call me on this - I forgot which persona I was signed in on, and used the new one by mistake.

McCain should be toast by now and isn't!

This clown prince is joined at the hip with the most craven criminal in U.S. history and will perpetuate 4 more years of Bush crimes without recourse. That is a given to all but the feckless Dipocrits and the two most incompetent "leaders" in their history, i.e. Pelosi and Reid. Had Bush been assailed and impeached following the November, '06 elections there would be no Bush, no Cheney, no Rice, no Mukasy, no Rove, no Corsi and damned sure no McCain!. But no.....all of that is off the table and that sordid array is running even with or ahead of Obamarama/Biden in the polls. Will someone tell me what the hell is going on? This should be a slam dunk with any suggestion of McCain evoking only the AFLAC duck's arghhhh. Wake up America and make some demands for accountability, purpose and hope. It begins with storming the campaign offices of all Dipocrits seeking election in November and promising to kick their collective asses if they do not restore governance of, by and for the people. There has never been a good Republican and there never will be one. If the Dipocrits can't get that through their noggins then it is time to look in the direction of Cynthia McKinney and others. Sad but true dear friends!

Free Universal Health Care is Completely Affordable

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
World War II completely devastated the UK economy. After it was over we were almost completely bankrupt and many of our towns and cities had been bombed to hell.

Yet in 1948, the National Health Service was started by the Labour Government which provided totally free health care for all. It worked exceptionally well. When I was a child the standard of health care was far superior to what it is now.

The arguments against Free Healthcare are completely obscene in a rich developed society.

The massive financial bureaucracies profitting on people's illnesses - simply have to be dismantled - or rather bypassed.

A US National Health Service would simply make them redundant.

Why pay when you can get better care for free?

The former employees made redundant from their desk bound office jobs could be retrained to do something useful - like rebuilding crumbling infrastructure. The exercise would do them good, make them feel better about themselves, and they would probably lead much longer and happier lives.

McCain's military draft will seal in health benefits...

for a generation of young people. Think about it: a whole cohort of young men and women will go through the fitness and character-building routines of the military, something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Ex-military guys always have that extra-special bearing: people can tell they know how to carry themselves. A draft will do more than any of the trillions that would be thrown at the health system and crime fighting measures. Keep em fit, keep em busy: that's how you raise a generation of young people.

I would recommend if you have a young son or daughter to get them to start working towards 10 mile a day runs, and alternate weight days.

McCain is using this rhetoric because that's all he has as his base. He is a War President like Dubha-Yah Bush. So I am of course naturally suspicious as anyone else should be of him. However, I am not going to give unwavering support to the Democrat Obama just because he is the opposite party, both are owned by the same people. However, the Libertarian Party is the way to Go!

Nothing much is going to change if either Obama or Mccain is president. Bush is already crashing the country into the brick wall at 90 mph. Mccain will do it again at 95 mph, Obama at 85 mph. Nader, on the other hand, will actually change direction and avoid that wall. Any questions?

All The Comments Are Great, But America Isn't Listening.

After everything that the Neocon led Whitehouse has done over the last 7 plus years, we still have a nation divided nearly 50/50 over who will be our next President. This is beyond stupid. I don't have the words to express my frustration and bewilderment over how ANYONE can still believe these guys. I'm being polite when I say "guys". The only other thought I have for the American people that comes to mind, is a quote from the Bible that the Neocons don't read, and it is, "When the blind lead the blind, they both fall into the ditch". So, IF America chooses McCain, America will deserve EVERYTHING that happens to it.
P.S. To everyone who reads Alternet.org, prepare for the worst, because the worst is probably what America will choose, since they have done so consistently for the last 7 plus years.

Mac being a Vindictive Hero?
Posted by: Purple Girl on Aug 28, 2008 6:50 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Granted Mac's 'public service' history has been questionable, but his temper is a known quanitity.
Seems Mac can't goosestep his way out of shit.
He's dragged out & flaunted Phil, Lindsay et al.
He has played the POW card so often other military personnel are scremaing 'Foul!'
He has no concern about saying outrageous things (100 yrs in Iraq) or showing his confusion (Sunnis,Shia, insurgents...Czech republic)
he clearly stated his desire to be Pres was motivated by pure ambition-not duty or vision.
So has admitted his ego steers his decisions.Think being kneecapped by Cheneycorp in '00 might have pissed him off, Might have invoked his Vindictive side, his desire for revenge?
think about it, if Mac intentionally throws the election to Obama, Who'd be screwed? Cheneycorp.
Maybe John is working on rebuilding his image as a National hero by jumping on the garnade. His image and legacy are far more important to him then a title.
God knows he has been willing to drag out every scum bag affiliated with this admin and Corp Corruption, even their sociopathic 'Religious leaders'.
If Mac's goal is to lose this election, he's doing a great job!If he 'wins' it will be a clear signal the election was rigged.the masses will be hitting the streets, thus also facilitating a Change from an Uprising.
Maybe John is truely putting 'country first' by screwing CheneyCorp, and reaping the satisfaction of serving His dish of Revenge cold. His Ego may be serving the Nations (and Worlds) common good- intentionally or unintentionally.
Now all he has to do is name some lameass VP pick, and suddenly fall 'ill' in Oct.And will have Served this Country with Honor & distinction!
Now that would be a hero worth admiring
