MoveOn Is Not What You Think It Is

By Christopher Hayes, The Nation. Posted July 28, 2008.

Capable of dominating a news cycle with a single ad and raising millions of dollars with one e-mail, MoveOn is a major political pioneer.

Five years to the day after American forces began their campaign of "shock and awe" in Iraq, opponents of the war gathered in Washington. While some came with bullhorns and drums and flag-draped coffins, danced down K Street and confronted legislators on Capitol Hill, others formed a quiet vigil in Lafayette Park across from the White House. Here there were no bullhorns or drums. Instead, there were a few news cameras, a banner that read Invest in America, Not Endless War in Iraq and a clutch of several dozen members of MoveOn. Bill Hamm, a retired Air Force pilot from Texas who had come to Washington for the Take Back America conference, told me that during his military career, fellow pilots often gave him push back because of his liberal politics. But, he said, "I think that's changing now." Hamm told me that back in Austin, where he and his wife serve as regional coordinators for MoveOn's local councils, his wife was organizing a 150-person vigil outside the governor's mansion. Because of "war on terror" restrictions they were told they couldn't bring candles. "So they're going to use flashlights."

This year, MoveOn turns ten. News of the organization's advanced age tends to elicit the same startled response as word of a childhood star's divorce. But more important, the anniversary serves to highlight just how far the organization has come. What started as a simple one-sentence petition hastily posted to the web has evolved into the most readily identifiable group in the vanguard of a revived progressivism, with a membership that exceeds 3 million. Capable of dominating a news cycle with a single ad and raising millions of dollars with a lone e-mail, MoveOn pioneered an entire approach to conducting politics through the Internet that has been replicated and spun off across the country and around the globe, an approach that, as the Obama campaign has dramatically demonstrated, has permanently transformed the landscape of American politics. And yet the roots of its success remain largely misunderstood.

This is in large part because MoveOn has been viewed through the distorting lens of a four-decade culture-war narrative, one whose labels have long outlasted the movements and dynamics that gave rise to them. In 1968, as the country approached what seemed to many at the time something like a civil war, Richard Nixon addressed the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach. He described "cities enveloped in flamesirens in the nightAmericans hating each other, fighting each other, killing each other at home." Amid this tumult and chaos, Nixon presented himself as a tribune for those who weren't in the streets, who weren't seeking out confrontation and attention, "the forgotten Americans," he called them, "the non-shouters."

Forty years later, despite tectonic shifts in demographics and politics, our political map still bears the same key: a decent silent majority on one side besieged by a zealous, angry, out-of-touch left on the other. For movement conservatives and establishment centrists alike, MoveOn is just a new name for an old foe. Bill O'Reilly has called it "vicious," "radical," full of "fanatical left-wingers" who are blackmailing the Democratic Party. John McCain, not to be outdone, responded to the "General Betray Us" ad by telling a Republican audience this past fall that MoveOn "ought to be thrown out of this country." Ostensibly mainstream voices like CNN's Campbell Brown have referred to MoveOn as "American insurgents," while Peter Beinart, in a 2004 cover essay in The New Republic, suggested that MoveOn be purged from the center left just as communists once were. Democrats have gotten in on the act as well: Hillary Clinton told donors at a private fundraiser that MoveOn had "intimidated" her supporters in the caucus states, and Barack Obama took a veiled swipe at the group in his recent speech on patriotism.

But understanding MoveOn as the direct descendant of the '60s protesters gets the organization exactly wrong. MoveOn's success (and, indeed, its limitations) is powered by its appeal to today's non-shouters. Though its politics are in many ways the opposite of the Nixon silent majority's, they share a disposition. They are people not inclined to protest but whose rising unease with the direction of the country has led to a new political consciousness. For citizens angered, upset and disappointed with their government but unsure how to channel those sentiments, MoveOn provides simple, discrete actions: sign this petition, donate money to run this ad, show up at this vigil. "Before I joined MoveOn," says staffer Anna Galland, "I was organizing in Rhode Island doing faith-based antiwar activism. In March 2003, MoveOn had put out an action alert for a vigil against the Iraq War. There were 500 people on the steps of the Capitol, and I remember thinking, 'I know all the activists in the state; where did all these people come from?' I think many people have a MoveOn moment where they look around and realize that this organization has managed to tap into a much broader range of people than they might have seen at past activist events."

Move On Needs to Get Radical ...

At least what the MSM calls radical ...

- Medicare for Everyone ... Any Dem leaders saying this?

- Reducing the Military and Homeland Security Budget ... The Dems are increasing our Military and Homeland Security Budget!

- Fair Trade NOT Free Trade... Pelosi and Reid are still pushing Free Trade Agreements through!

- Reversing the attack on our right to privacy and upholding the Constitution ... Pelosi and Reid just let the new FISA Bill happen!

- Fair Taxation ... The Democrats killed a bill designed to make hedge fund managers pay income tax like the rest of us for a big bash in Harry Reid's Las Vegas where the money flowed into Democratic coffers.

As we all can plainly see the Democrats as a whole consistently vote against these views and their leaders aren't any better.

If Move On wants to stay relevant they need to put fire to the feet of the Democrats and their leaders as well as the Republicans.

American Government needs a total restructuring and anything less just won't make a big difference for the "reckoning is a'comin' "

I am confused as to the purpose of this article which -- it seems to me -- only paints the organization in its best light. At its best, Moveon is simply wonderful. Do any of us exist only at our best?

Some of us slightly closer in -- but still far from Moveon's decision-making process -- wonder whether Moveon's polls of its membership are shaped by desires for specific outcomes. To ask the question, pollsters know, is to answer it.

A while ago, Moveon members told the organization, for example, that health care for all was a prime concern. Moveon's centralized leadership have taken that mandate to mean we did not favor universal single payer health insurance. Moveon joined a major coalition urging what is -- in essence -- a version of Senator Obama's health program. Maybe Moveon's leadership is right in this political calculation but it might be too strong to suggest that the organization's decision here was "member driven."

MoveOn is whoring for Pelosi's Centrist (Right wing of the Left) Democrats.

MoveOn is as CORRUPT as Pelosi's DLC Democrats

As MoveOn membership is defined as an email address, I have been a member for years and once organized an anti-oil industry protest for them. I quickly discovered how controlling this extremely top down group is. Even the local Councils seem corrupt. In my experience the local Councils go out of their way to censure issues they don't want to gain traction (such as Impeachment) and refuse to pass on information about other progressive groups actions in order to stifle them.

MoveOn is essentially whoring for Pelosi's Centrist (Right wing of the Left) Democrats. MoveOn claims to be anti-war but their patron, the Pelosi Gang is about as pro war as it gets in the party.

The ultimate deceit is claiming to be membership driven. What nonsense. All of their polls and forums are designed to get them only the response the leadership has determined in advance that it wants. Any notion that MoveOn has any resemblance to a Democratic body is nonsense. Fascists in progressive garments is closer to reality.

Now MoveOn has stooped to taking "surveys" of its members. Instead of asking all members at one time what they think of an issue, they appear to be polling only a carefully selected small sample of members with a carefully written poll and then portraying the whole membership as agreeing with the small sample results. Crooked indeed.

Our group has criticised MoveOn for its totally inadequate Impeachment polling for nearly two years. Other than to say its members don't want impeachment one hears nothing about poll results.

Given that the crimes of the Bush-Cheney Administration are so serious and so many, and that
MoveOn has so completely written off Impeachment, what does MoveOn have against protecting Our Constitution and getting Accountability for those who murdered over 4,124 US Soldiers for WMD Lies? Do MoveOn's leaders hate the Constitution since they do so little to protect it?

Scary indeed to think MoveOn is the progressive movement's model. They do not speak for me.

Moveon.org would be genuine if they at least made Obama learn from Nader, Mckinney, Sheehan, etc ...

Ok, if moveon.org wants to support Obama, FINE. However, their lack of pressuring Obama or for that matter to learn from 3rd party progressive/liberals such as Nader, Mckinney, Sheehan, etc ... raises enough red flags to tell me that like most of these other focus groups out there, they're nothing more than mere political puppet organizations. Now I understand why the DLC has "softened" its attacks against moveon.org. And as long as we're all stuck with fakes and pansies,

GOD WILL CONTINUE TO SEVERELY PUNISH AMERICA TO ETERNAL DAMNATION ! COWARDS DIE MANY A DEATH BUT THE VALIANT TASTE OF DEATH BUT ONCE !!

What if there was no MoveOn.org?
Posted by: HughScott on Jul 28, 2008 7:30 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I've been a MoveOn member for five years. In 2004, to help John Kerry win the White House by protesting the Iraq War, I went to MoveOn vigils, attended neighborhood MoveOn parties, showed up at MoveOn town halls and donated money to MoveOn.

Also that year, in a personal fight against the Republicans, I self-published a nonfiction book, George Dub-ya Bush, THE PHONY FIGHTER PILOT, that centered on a falsified Bush biography I discovered on a State Department Web site in February 2004.

Obviously posted on the Internet by accident, the fabricated White House document, I reasoned, had been created by Bush's 2000 campaign team to help him beat John McCain in the GOP primaries.

Angered by the discovery of Republican election skullduggery. I called the Boston Globe. Impressed, the daily reported my finding and gave me credit as the source.

To inform voters about the "Bogus Bush Bio Caper," I posted the entire manuscript of my book on a promotional Web site and asked Joan Blades at MoveOn for publicity. She obliged and my site, PhonyFighterPilot.com, had over 400,000 hits that month.

Now I am less enthusiastic about MoveOn and agree with just about everything Christopher Hayes wrote. Still, I can't help wondering what if there had been no MoveOn.org in 2004 to counter Bush's powerful propaganda machine? Most likely, instead of a close election, the end result would have been an overwhelming Bush landslide.

This year, MoveOn may be more important than ever. Unwilling to relinquish it's tyrannical rightwing rule of America, the GOP will soon launch the dirtiest campaign in U.S. political history, using Karl Rove's complete playbook.

The smears again Barack Obama have already started with Republican operatives and GOP 527 groups using bigoted code words like "arrogant" and "inexperienced" to tell voters a black man should not become our president -- especially with "Hussein" for a middle name and "possible" Muslim ties.

Even though MoveOn has lost some of its effectiveness, I will continue to contribute time and money to the organization because the alternative -- John McBush in the White House next year -- is totally unacceptable.

I unsubscribed from their mailing list when they had no reaction whatsoever to Pelosi's "impeachment is off the table". I realized they were never going to pressure the dems, who took over both houses in the last midterms, to keep their promises to get us out of Iraq, to stop the unconstitutional laws being foisted on the public, the illegal spying, the war crimes. I began to realize that MoveOn represents only yellow dog democrat cheerleaders and fundraisers. They've had some successes, but other organizations that are more serious about progressive issues, and about the preservation of our constitution and our democracy, have had successes too. I have only so many dollars to donate.

The House Dems did not allow Friday's 6hr pre Impeachment Hearing Out Of The Goodness Otheir Hearts

ALL SHOULD BE AWARE that the House Democrats did not allow this preliminary Impeachment Hearing Friday
Out Of The Goodness Of Their Hearts
or Because of Any Particular Group's Lobbying.

THERE IS ONLY ONE DYNAMIC THAT HAS CHANGED RECENTLY.

The Democrats are afraid of massive voter retribution in the November Election. They are afraid of losing their jobs and their power, and the perks that go with it.

The Voters have recently and loudly told the House Democrats that we are sick and tired of their stonewalling on holding Bush and Cheney accountable. After My Democrats took over, the polls show that Congress's positive rating dropped to the single digits, the lowest in history. The refusal of the House Democrats to stop the Iraq War and Impeach is unforgiveable. We put you in office and if you do not hold Full Impeachment Hearings prior to the Election we will un-elect you.

In Colorado We Democrats, Independents, Republicans and others are currently doing negative campaigning against all incumbent House/Senate Candidates who have refused to support and even discuss impeachment. If the House Democrats do not immediately announce the date of the first full impeachment hearing scheduled prior to the election, we will greatly increase our negative campaigning.

Your job is yours to lose. You have our support only if you hold serious full impeachment hearings before the election.

Democrats who Refuse To Even Discuss Impeachment Will Not Get you Single Payer HealthCare.

If MoveOn Actually Cares About REAL Single Payer, Not Just More Corporate HealthCare/WELFARE?
MOVEON WILL
Immediately begin To Support The Starting of IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS Prior To The Election.

It will be so amusing When Impeachment Happens and MoveOn isn't on the Impeachment Train.

I was a strong backer of Obama until he voted for FISA and came out in favor of an increased military presence in Afghanistan.

In the last 200 years, the British and Russian empires as well as the former Soviet Union sent their armies into the region, only to have them beaten back. What makes Obama think our crumbling bankrupt empire can or should attempt this?

I about ready to vote for Nader - again.

Something I find interesting about a lot of the replies here are all those whining that Moveon didn't push THEIR particular idea of what the agenda should be OR their personal ideas as though Moveon was in existence solely to be THEIR outlet for their personal grievances.

I'm a member of Moveon and still believe they have their hearts in the right place and are doing what is necessary to FIRST put in a democratic majority. I firmly and hopefully believe once that is done, Moveon's agenda will become much more progressive and more pressure will come to bear upon democrats to stop being such cowards in the face of more radical opposition to democrats such as Rush and the swift boat liars for Bush organizations, and start moving forward with a more progressive agenda.

It's what I believe and hope in.

When I hear democratic politicians show fear of the right by slamming Moveon, I am disheartened in the dems, NOT Moveon.

Think about it, there really is no alternative voice with such power and reach other than Moveon.

MoveOn is a service organization...

"It's essentially a service organization that helps people who are busy advocate in politics" -- Eli Pariser

I've been a MoveOn member ever since "Censure and Move on" and I have to say that Eli Pariser hits the nail on the head with this description of MoveOn. What MoveOn does for me is offer opportunities for activism. If it's an issue I care about I contribute. If it's not my issue I simply ignore the e-mails.

It's a disingenuous criticism to say that MoveOn is nothing but fund rasing. Obviously MoveOn can measure whether members are responding to issues, and that helps the organizers develop more campaigns that will resonate with members.

That's why it's also disengenous to complain about what issues MoveOn does or doesn't tackle. An issue that doesn't resonate with the group just won't draw the support it needs.

Periodically, MoveOn offers bumperstickers and I have to say I just love to see them on other people's cars. It makes me happy to know there are other people out there getting MoveOn e-mail and doing what they can.

MoveOn.org represents a more centrist approach

I believe MoveOn people are far more mainstream and therefore Centrist than those in DC- who live in an odd bubble- understand. To say that Moveon people are radical etc is to be very uninformed about what MoveOn is about. What is it - 70% of Americans want the war to end and think Bush is a terrible president? So 70% of America is made up of left wing radicals? I don't think so.

Most people are decent and therefore know that what we have in DC is a cabal and not a government - a government who has in their hands our media, a media that loves to tell us how great the Bush regime is and how bad anyone who speaks out against it is.

America's people are evolving faster than our "leaders", which means a majority of those "leaders" no longer represent our values, and instead represent a barbaric minority. America's people need to replace these corrupt has-beens with fresh new real representation, and hold the barbarians accountable for what they have done.

In case anyone cares about health care, the Dems, and our country

Action Required Some of you readers about Moveon are looking for, believe in and hope for a miracle. It's not going to happen without your actions.

I order to get what one believes and hopes in one must act. Yes, there are a lot of people putting up a so-called "fight" against the for-profit health insurance companies. Maybe you would call them whiners, as one of you wrote, but at least they are taking action "to the streets" of America.

We want support from Moveon for health care. We, the people of these United States, want non-profit single-payer national health insurance as part of our national Health Care for All movement to get it. A few days ago a Moveon member called me and expressed concern that Moveon is NOT supporting the will of the people! Indeed, they are not, and this is very confusing, upsetting and counter-productive.

One-Way Communications at Moveon. My fellow activist also reminded me about Moveon, where one cannot post any comments of concern about their position. Perhaps this is considered by some to be a big generalization, but it's true to some degree that Moveon is just one-way communications from them to the people, where the people mainly click buttons to surveys that Moveon provides without follow-up feedback on much of anything from members.

People are now starting to speak up. I am one of the increasing number of people who cares to take action for the will of the people, the common person, the middle-class that the Democratic Party forgot about when it comes to health care.

ONE WAY TO AVOID HOTHEAD. No, of course, I don't want a President Hothead. However, if Nader and McKinney suck votes away from Obama on the critical issue, we will wake up on November 5, 2008 literally shaking with fear of what is going to happen with McCain in place instead of Obama. We must act. See below.

Bob Haiducek (hi' duh sek)
Bob the Health and Health Care Advocate

We, too, can GET PEACE OF MIND
But we must join thousands of others as part of communicating to each of our U.S. Representatives. For example, we can FOLLOW THE SCHEDULE
And GET REMINDERS to act as per the Schedule

P.S. Want to know more about the coalition that Moveon joined that is AGAINST the will of the people?
The will of the people is known, as seen at the Single-Payer Support Monitor.
Move on signed on for something that other so-called Progressives (like Barack Obama in particular) are also supporting.
Take a look at these web pages ... regarding "Health Care for America Now" ... which is FOR more for-profit bureaucracy and FOR more government bureaucracy, as seen by the 2 bright red boxes in the first link and the details in the second link ...

I joined Move On and helped with calling people to promote Presidential Candidates. Just as they chose to back Obama and not Clinton, they do what they feel is best and they are usually right. However they really do not seem to pay any attention to their membership, as I find it next to impossible to send them an email and give them advice and constructive critism. There is no one to email to warn them about mistakes they make and how they cost democrats the last Presidential election.

I support most of what they do, but they are not always correct in their actions, directions and paths. It is disappointing that they are locked on their own views and close minded to those of others. It didn't start out like this and will probably become less member driven and become more controlling, with members being driven instead, if they do not remember their roots. Move on needs to pay more attention to it's members and give them better email access so that they can communicate their ideas, so that Move On can see the big picture. Unless of course they could care less and elect to continue their arrogance. That would be a shame and self destructive for a group that has done some good for all of us and is capable of doing much better.

I've been a member since the very beginning and MoveOn was a genuine trailblazer. But they've become way too "centrist" to represent my views anymore. Where's the outrage over the Dems' sellout to the war criminals? To Obama's treasonous betrayal of the 4th Amendment with his FISA vote?

Also, their membership seems to be rather old. I've been to a number of house parties and it's rare for me to find anyone in their 30s or even 40s; most attendees are 50-70 at least. I have nothing against older folks -- one of my best friends is a man of 80 I met at a MoveOn party -- but change always happens in the young.

I still get the emails and I respond where I agree, but I no longer count on MoveOn to represent me or my views. And I certainly think my money is better spent elsewhere.

Any organisation with that much funding has an agenda. Just as both parties are funded by the same transnational corporations, so as the give the voters the illusion of having a choice in their government. I would be curious to find out where their millions of dollars in funding come from. The average voter? I doubt that.

That anybody or organization would support a Democratic candidate just because he is not Republican, but is the lesser of two evils, is reprehensible beyond belief in this era based on what we progressives know. What any college student at least knows is that, that has been a forced choice going on in politics for over a half of a century. All we have gotten is more war, more transfer of wealth out of our hands, more degraded environment, no matter who is in the White House. The two party system is a system of abject oppression on a mass scale..It is old wine in old bottles. We need a new party now. I will call it the Freedom Party

The comments remind me of Monty Python's Life of Brian and the scene about Judean People Front vs the Peoples Front of Judea--we are too busy fighting amongst ourselves to really make headway against the ruling power structure.
MO also seem to sometimes border on spam as I get soemthing from them practically every day. one criticism in the article I agree with is the one sided nature of communication-- they choose the issues and positions and the membership agrees or not. I am also critical of Clinton Obama poll; they should have had an IRV poll earlier when three other candidates I preferred were still in namely Kucinich, Edwards, and Richardson--Obama was my fourth choice and Hillary was last among Dems.

MoveOn: country-club liberals

Here's the problem. Our political leaders since Reagan have taken the government so far to the right that we're about to tip over and crash. We can see the consequences all around us. It is going to take radical change, a reversal of US domestic and international policies, to keep us from going over history's cliff. And those changes aren't going to happen if we don't MAKE them happen.

MoveOn's tepid approach is ludicrous under these circumstances. MoveOn takes little slaps at the fingers of the vampire when what is needed is a stake through the heart. They are the country club liberals who take cruises to declare their solidarity with the working class (and who are oblivious to those pushed out of the working class). Orderly speeches in designated "protest zones"? Piles of petitions that are easily stashed away and ignored? This won't bring change, although it does give some the illusion that they are actually doing something.

why I stopped my MoveOn membership

I was a MoveOn member from the early impeachment-era, I contributed and participated in a lot of petition actions. I dropped my membership for several reasons: (1) I found the "Caught Red-Handed" ad campaign sophomoric and misleading -- I opposed our local GOP candidate strongly, but the MoveOn ad distorted his record in a way I found appalling, because I'm against dirty politics even when it supports my candidates. (2) When I attempted repeatedly to contact MoveOn to voice my objection to the ad, my emails and postings disappeared without a trace or a response. I came to mistrust the people running MoveOn -- their surveys and other mechanisms to get feedback seem lack any openness to challenge and instead have structured things to support whatever line the MoveOn leadership has decided to take.
