Michelle Obama Watch

By Chris Nolan, AlterNet. Posted July 7, 2008.

Women unite to counter racist and sexist media coverage of aspiring First Lady.

Women of all races are flocking to Gina McCauley's new blog, Michelle Obama Watch:

Gina McCauley's blog on African-American women in pop culture has never attracted this kind of attention.

The 3-year-old site has a mostly African-American audience. But she launched a new Michelle Obama Watch blog in June to monitor and critique media coverage of the potential first lady, and since then, feminists of all colors have been linking and commenting.

"I think new bridges are being built, and I'm excited about that," said McCauley, 32, of Austin, Texas, who noted the response to the new blog has been exponentially greater from feminist bloggers around the country. [Baltimore Sun]

"Michelle Obama Watch is a repository of all of the criticism, praise, and general chicanery thrown at Michelle Obama between now and November. If Barack wins… well, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it, but for right now, we are looking at a 5 month obligation. If it has anything to do with Michelle, it will be on Michelle Obama Watch," according to MOW's About page.

Makes sense as she has been a very polarizing person.

I suspect the more they muzzle her the better off Obama will be!

She is obviously a racist and not a patriotic one at that so she doesn't bring much to the table as far as many white are concerned. If he wants the white vote, she needs to keep it toned down. So far her handlers have done a good job of "selling and packaging" her. Shes not as abrasive as she was at the start!

Just because a woman doesn't walk around behind her husband like a puppy, smiling politely doesn't make her abrasive. She's an over- achiever and self made and didn't get where she is by being a shrinking violet. I for one don't want another "Laura" in the White House. The country needs someone who can bring the country alive. Michele Obama is a welcome change and if she speaks out of turn once in a while, so be it. Thanks, ANNA

Gina is not only looking at the sexist attacks against Michelle Obama, she is also looking at the racist attacks against her. Michelle is being hit with a double wammy, not of her own making as many of you speculate but the making of insecure and ignorant men and women who are uncomfortable with a not only STRONG, accomplished but also a BLACK woman as the first lady of the U. S. They over-exaggerates every little thing she says, make it sound like she committed some damnable sin and then blame her for it.

Carbon Based you wrote: "She is obviously a racist and not a patriotic one at that so she doesn't bring much to the table as far as many white are concerned. If he wants the white vote, she needs to keep it toned down."

Your defamation and slander of Michelle Obama is not only unfounded and foolish but you need to know that it is unacceptable. The new White racist southern strategy of Karl Rove and the Republican Party is to continue to prey on the dumbed down constituancy that has served them so well for the past 40 years. White Racists calling non-racist Democrats and progressive "human" change agents "Racists" is not going to work. However, it exposes you as the real racist and you can count on me to call you out.

Your pretend interest in an Obama presidency notwithstanding, with friends like you calling his wife an "unpatriotic racist," President Obama doesn't need enemies does he?

As far as your "many whites are concerned" statement, who made you the spokesperson for "many Whites" and what are your sources for how much unpatriotic racist Mrs. Michelle Obama does not bring to the table? Your wishful thinking that president Obama does not get the "White" vote is uncovered. Shame on you.

A word to the wise. Feed your mind non racist, non fear based information. Watch your mouth.

Hava nicer life.
