John McCain got a little testy when a reporter asked him why he didn't pick Governor Jim Gibbons to chair his Nevada campaign.

It's easy enough to guess why not: The governor is in the middle of an very ugly, and very public divorce battle. McCain tried to defuse the somewhat tense question with his idea of a joke, Jake Tapper reports:

"I appreciate his support," McCain said. "As you know, the lieutenant governor is our chairman."

Why snub the governor? Ralston asked.

"I didn’t mean to snub him,. I've known the lieutenant governor for 15 years and we've been good friends," McCain said. "I didn't intend to snub him. There are other states where the governor is not the chairman."

Maybe it's the governor's approval rating and you are running from him like you are from the president? Asked Ralston in a question McCain clearly found loaded.

Said McCain, chuckling, "And I stopped beating my wife just a couple of weeks ago."

Some have found the subject of McCain's joke -- wife-beating -- inappropriate.

To be clear, McCain was alluding to the fictitious leading question "When did you stop beating your wife, senator?" It's a bit of distasteful DC yuckery so commonly quoted it's hackneyed.

But considering the subject McCain was discussing at the time, to allude to that joke was, well, .....awkward!

Gov. Gibbons last month filed for divorce from his wife Dawn citing incompatiblity.

It's pretty scandalous. The Reno Gazette-Journal recently reported that one month Gibbons sent 860 text messages to a woman with whome Mrs. Gibbons suspects her husband of stepping out.

Slick, Senator. Very slick.

Gibbons you may recall started his governorship amidst accusations that he assaulted a cocktail waitress named Chrissy Mazzeo three weeks before Election Day. Mazzeo said Gibbons grabbed her in a parking garage and threatened to sexually assault her. Charges were never filed.

Might want to scratch that joke from the schtick, senator, especially in Nevada. [ABC]

Great word, hackneyed, it could be used for all of McCain's shtick.

That certainly lowers the bar. I know his memory and sense of decorum is fading, but someone should remind him that if he doesn't have anything nice to say, he shouldn't say anything at all. Can you imagine this clown at an international conference table? You think Bush's backrubs were bad? Heaven help us. Were that George Carlin were here.

Come on. That's a stretch. His answer to the question was actually quite witty, and, as you've explained, his reference was obvious. I'm NO McCain supporter, but surely you can do better than this...

McCain's attempts humor are as hilarious as a burlap bag of drowning kittens. Can you just imagine the dystopia that could be generated by The Comedy Team of Bush and McBush.
The program could be their devolved versions of Laugh In or Your Hit Parade!

Progam titles might be:

Lamentations Galore
or
Your Hit and Torture Parade
featuring Snarky Lymphoma*

*Remember his hit song?

"My Face Is This Color Purple Cuz
I Got Those Waterboardig Blues"

It may be generational.

McCain grew up with an unearned authority over women; not unusual for a man of his age. Very few men of his generation morphed that pivilege into a chivalry that is protective and respectul of "wimmen." The vast majority of them, like McCain, are misogynistic and use that privilege to diminish, demean, and abuse women. Evidence that this man deserted his first wife following a disfiguring accident, and that he publicly called his current one of those 7 words George Carlin warned him about using.

He may try to talk enlightened, he may even want to change, but this old boy is what he is. You can put lipstick on him, but he's still a pig.

to the fact that McStain just doesn't "get it." He's so out of touch that he doesn't understand the flat-out WRONGNESS of that so-called joke.

Even more proof that he isn't fit for the presidency. Especially considering that women make up more than 50% of the population!

Perhaps he should read, "How to Win Friends and Influence People." He certainly isn't doing a very good job himself! If he keeps this up, he will be toast in November.

If anybody happened to see his on-air recommendation of the Lifetime TV series "Army Wives" (the vids of both he and Obama are posted at the Lifetime website) -- he states that he knows about the show because "Cindy makes me watch." Har-de-har-har. Whether or not he wrote that himself or somebody wrote it for him, it's just dumb. It's comes from a different world, where husbands and wives alternate lording it over each other and then joke about it. Truly a different generation...let's hope, anyway.

How Many Times Have McCain Beat His Wife

This issue has come up too many times to not be grounded in some truth. From a common sense perspective, and after hearing questionable incidents of aggression before, I am really starting to wonder if John McCain is a little heavy with his words and hands. Time will tell.

Violence like this cannot be kept a secret in today's society for too long. Sooner or later some will come forth with the "411" on what is really going on.

So how about it Nevada?

Okay,
So SilverState Helicopters grew up in your backyard and you did nothing, the Governor elects the former owner of that company to the board of transportation and refuses to ask him to step down after the company goes bankrupt, and John McCain wants the LT Governor to manage his campaign in Nevada? McCain until you or the elected officials in Nevada do something to assist this large group of victims of this company, fat chance in heck your campaign will be successful. Not one single Republican has even answered a letter from the former students asking for help.
