People of Haditha: "This is an Organized Crime"

Small tragedies can get lost in a big war, but it is sad and troubling that, so far at least, it looks like no one is going to have to pay for the November, 2005, massacre of 24 civilians in Haditha, Iraq. That's the mostly Sunni city in which, at the height of the insurgency, U.S. Marines mowed down a carful of unarmed Iraqi men, apparently shooting them point blank as they lay on the ground, and then stormed into surrounding homes where they butchered men, women, and children.

So the tragedy of the massacre is now compounded by the tragedy of a judicial whitewash and coverup. As Bob Dylan wrote in "The Lonesome Ballad of Hattie Carroll," about a maid slaughtered by her employer who was then given a six-month sentence for murder: "Now is the time for your tears."

Here's the latest, from AP, in the case, just one in a string of such dismissals:

A military judge dismissed charges Tuesday against a Marine officer accused of failing to investigate the killings of 24 Iraqis. … Of eight Marines originally charged in the case, only one is still facing prosecution in the biggest U.S. criminal prosecution involving Iraqi deaths to come out of the war.

Only McClatchy, formerly Knight-Ridder, bothered to wonder what the people of Haditha think about this ongoing miscarriage of justice, in a story by Leila Fadel:

Khadija Hassan still shrouds her body in black, nearly three years after the deaths of her four sons. They were killed on Nov. 19, 2005, along with 20 other people in the deadliest documented case of U.S. troops killing civilians since the Vietnam War. … The residents of Haditha, after being told they could depend on U.S. justice, feel betrayed.

"We put our hopes in the law and in the courts and one after another they are found innocent," said Yousef Aid Ahmed, the lone surviving brother in the family. "This is an organized crime."

And McClatchy bothers to provide the horrific details:

This is how the residents of Haditha recall that day: U.S. Marines were apparently bent on revenge after a roadside bomb killed one of their own. They killed four unarmed men and an unarmed taxi driver. Then they threw grenades and entered two homes. In the Younes' household, they killed eight people, including two toddlers, a 5-year-old and a mother recovering from an appendectomy.

In an adjacent home, they killed seven people, including a 4-year-old and two women, according to death certificates and one of the children who survived. Across the street, residents of two houses shared by a family were pulled out. The men were separated from the women as the Marines asked them about weapons.

One of the survivors told Fadel: "Right now I feel hatred that will not fade. It grows every day."

When the US personnel who commit such war crimes are not held accountability, it begins to eat away at ones support for the many US personnel who have tried to do their duty with as much humanity as possible. That is when there is no difference between the way war criminals and decent people are treated, they are all viewed as war criminals - the rotten apples spoiling the entire barrel.

In recent months the US has succeeded in gaining support of Iraqi Arabs by buying them off BUT mark my word there is NO way that we can ever pay enough money to offset this atrocity .
We promised these people JUSTICE and slapped them in the face by holding NO ONE accountable . Creates a really good recruitment tool for Al queda

What the hell has happened to the citizens of the US? The actions of these Marines cannot be excused no matter what kind of pressure they were under. The fact that they killed infant, children, bedridden people, is almost too much to even comprehend.

That is, if we lived in a society that operated under the rules of law. The truth of the matter is, American's believe themselves to be better than others. When you add in a good dose of "I believe everything my President says cause I'm his bitch" you get the formula for atrocities to occur that no one cares about.

When events like this start to happen here, and they will as the government gets a tighter noose around their bitches necks, it will be too late to wonder what we could have done differently to save ourselves.

Those poor people in Iraq (and soon to be Iran) didn't deserve what we've done to them AND FOR WHAT IS THE BIG QUESTION? FOR WHAT?

We haven't gained anything from going into Iraq-unless you're a corporate bloodsucker that is.

American's have to face the harsh truth that will be heading our way soon enough: we are the terrorists. We are the bullies. We are the country that deserves to be bombed. We condone genocide, interventions in soveriegn nations, overthrows of sovereign governments, kidnapping of foreign and American citizens so that they can be tortured overseas, spying on each other, killing children in Africa...

Yes YOU AMERICA, as a citizen of this country, YOU are just as responsible for the actions of the people's government.

So, do you want to take it like a bitch, or go down standing up like an American? The time is coming when this will be the decision you'll have to make.

Oil hits fresh record above $142 a barrel
Oil prices extended their record breaking run on Friday after pushing above the $140 a barrel level for the first time in the previous session, driven higher by a cocktail of supply concerns, dollar weakness, inflation fears and turmoil in equity markets.
Nymex August West Texas Intermediate hit a hit a record $142.26 a barrel before easing back to trade $2 higher at $141.64. ICE August Brent surged to a fresh record high of $142.13 a barrel, before edging back to stand $1.27 higher at $141.10 a barrel.
This attitude of the president after the lost war in Afghanistan and Iraq now pursuing the same issue for Iran has one bug in his head. Pride. The dollar is very low. CPI since last 16 years has got all baffled, houses taken by the Sheriff as the owners cannot pay the mortgage and there is no oil form Saudi as token of gift from the visit. Now with this what do you expect? The Zimbabwe ripple. Is that nit it? The dying man still lies.
I thank you
