Can the Media Deal With Michelle Obama?

By Megan Garber, Columbia Journalism Review. Posted June 21, 2008.

The media is pushing hard on the boundaries between being a life partner and being a political partner.

She hates pantyhose! She loves her girls! She shops at Target … and pronounces it Tar-get, not Tar-jay! She loved Sex and the City! She eats bacon for breakfast (no halal food here, folks)! She's not above talking with her mouth full … of granola!

As they've been reporting this week in the mainstream (read: non-US Weekly) media, the details of Michelle Obama's famed "reintroduction tour" (see Liz's breakdown of those details here) have often been framed as Lofty Philosophical Questions About the Role of the Presidential Spouse: In this instance, to what extent is it fair to analyze the statements, beliefs and overall character of that spouse? To what extent is -- and should -- a Life Partner be a Political Partner?

On Wednesday night the Huffington Post ran a homepage-published story about Obama's "reintroduction," the story's banner headline begging the Spousal Role question. The New York Times' Alessandra Stanley, through the lens of Obama's and Cindy McCain's appearances on The View, gave us a breakdown of The Press Treatment of the Campaign-Trail Spouse Through History. We got blogged analysis of that tour here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here. On the cable news channels last night and this morning, we got the regurgitations of Michelle-O's appearance on The View, with segment guests -- political strategists, historians, etc. -- arguing about whether and how political spouses should exercise their membership in the Heard Wives Club.

The role of the political spouse is a fair subject of debate, to be sure, one that deserves discussion and dissection in the media. And those media, in this case, deserve some credit for couching a story whose main reportorial details involve pantyhose and cured pork products in terms of Profound Political Discourse. Conversations can always be elevated. So, you know, kudos. But loftiness can't exist on its own (pesky gravity!): News stories can truly be elevated only when the press provides enough substance to bolster them. And in this case, generally, it did not.

The "philosophical" questions about the Role of the Candidate's Counterpart have been grounded, instead, in the triviality of the answers offered to them: We were promised Rhetorical Loft; we got instead microscopic analyses of fist-bumping and cat-fighting. We got a lot about Cindy McCain's latest response to Michelle Obama's months-old "for the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of my country" comment (the peg being that said comment was mentioned during the View appearance); we got the campaigns' Official Responses to the she-said/she-said back-and-forth, with little further commentary. We got, in short, the same regurgitated, reiterated squabbles -- spiced with assorted inanity (Pantyhose? Really?) -- that we've come to expect, though not accept, in our campaign coverage.

None of which is terribly surprising. The "reintroduction tour" coverage was a matter of M.O. in every sense. But that's particularly unfortunate, in this case, because the question in the discussion we were promised is a good one: What is the role of the presidential spouse these days, both on the campaign trail and in the White House? Will our first ladies continue to populate the political ghetto of "women's causes" -- literacy (Laura Bush), children's issues (Barbara Bush), mental health (Betty Ford) -- or will they, as a rule rather than an exception, begin to take a more active role in their husbands' administrations, a la Eleanor Roosevelt or Edith Wilson or Hillary Clinton?

The quote is: "for the first time in my life, I am REALLY proud of my country." This was also pointed out on The View by Whoopi Goldberg. There is a significant difference in the meaning from what is most often attributed to Ms. Obama. And I am befuddled as to why nearly everyone continues to get this wrong. Maybe it is because it wouldn't even be worth mentioning otherwise.

Michele Obama is a major over achiever and not likely to be a shrinking violet with a painted on smile. She's billiant, beautiful, and makes alot of money. The way she is made her WHAT she is. She was successful in her own right when she met her husband. She's smart and tough. Why is everyone in a rush to alter her image in any way. She's entitled to her opinions. I doubt that she's in search of a 'makeover'. Thanks, ANNA

Well, nothing is wrong with this family. The flap is over the image they present of the modern successful couple. The real problem for old-time politicians is that the Obamas are proving something the right wing never wants proved - that their entire "race" philosophy is and has been wrong from the start.

Of course dyed-in-the-wool racists and sexists are upset when forced to face the fact their entire life philosophy is erroneous.

Normal citizens are always proud of their successful young people. Naturally, that people who support McCain are offended is a clue to their real purpose, which is to stay in power forever.

Michelle is a stunning woman

When a woman is 5' 11" she can't be a shrinking violet.

I don't see this so-called 'do-over' as a big deal. It just feels as if the campaign is moving into general election mode.

Michelle's black and white dress was tasteful and beautiful, all her dresses are beautiful. I love her taste and sense of style. I'm not sure what this article is about?

It was The View, Cindy McCain was on The View, they have all put in their time. I suppose if Michelle were on Hardball or any other type of show such as that her wardrobe, demeanor and most of all what came out of her mouth would have been very different. It would of course be inappropriate, however I believe Michelle COULD actually go on Hardball and carry it off very well. I very much doubt Cindy McCain could do that.

One of the things about the Obama's I love is the way they interact with one another. They are very easy with one another and affectionate and it is very genuine. After watching many clips of The Clintons with one another and John McCain interacting with Cindy, I noticed the Obamas are the only couple I've ever seen actually KISS one another on the lips as they passed one another on a stage. The Clintons and McCains exchange 'air' kisses, at best a peck on the cheek. There is also lots of eye contact between Michelle and Barack. Watching Cindy and John McCain it feels Cindy is, lol, arm candy, she watchs him very carefully for cues, in fact she rarely moves without looking at him for a cue, where as he rarely looks directly at her, she is just 'there'.

Anyway, seems to me Michelle is a terrific woman, she is beautiful. She hardly wears any make-up, doesn't need it. I am looking forward to having her as our First Lady. She matchs Obama perfectly, they are really a lovely couple. I think she is doing very VERY well with the media considering the environment she has had to adapt to very quickly. Cindy has been doing this for a real real long time (eons?).

Whatever 'make over' might be going on with Michelle is suble at best and we are now in general election mode. Her demeanor and conversations were appropriate for the show on which she was appearing. It is her job and everyone's job around Barack to DEFLECT negative attention, not INVITE it, and keep on message of much more important issues.

Ugg...gag....Michelle will probably have to go on the Regis and what's her name show eventually too.

That one excited comment will haunt Michelle for years. But let's remember what she's seen in her adult life. Just stop and think about the kinds of things she might have been thinking of that were not sources of pride in America. Maybe Iran-Contra, the pinnacle of Washington's bloody meddling in South America. Ketchup as a vegetable. The S&L debacle. Impeachment of a president for lying about sexual behavior which the righteous prosecutors then broadcast gleefully in all media. Little kids asking their parents what was on the lady's dress.

Perhaps more immediately on her mind were the disgraceful actions of the Bush administration. Invading a sovereign country because we were afraid it might hurt us some time. Grossly violating the Geneva Conventions. Undermining centuries of law founded on Constitutional bedrock. Or maybe she was thinking of social wrongdoing, such as systematically shifting wealth to the wealthiest citizens. Dismantling environmental protections that had been bipartisan victories.

Or maybe she was thinking of Katrina. The next time she's asked to appear in a context that will be unthreatening to suburban moms, maybe she could remind them that not all moms are so lucky.

Until now, that is.

What's the big media flap surrounding Cindy McCain? What was the scandal surrounding Laura Bush? Before Reagan was elected, who said boo about Nancy? Who vetted Rosalyn Carter, and dissected her every word?

Michelle Obama is the first African-American in line to be First Lady alongside her African-American husband. SHE and only she is the subject of this kind of scrutiny, and the launch-point for vicious lies told by the worst of the worst in American politics, who stoop so low to obtain power that they need shovels to walk in the street.

Consideration of Bill Clinton as a President's Consort was a different story. As a former President, his influence in the White House would have been profound.

So I expect the Republican element whose job it is to shit in the road and say Obama did it and Michelle told him to are going to be with us for the duration.

BUT WHAT THE LIARS AND FILTH-MONGERS DON'T KNOW IS THAT IT'S OVER FOR THEM.

WE ARE NOT GOING TO ALLOW LIES AND TREACHERY TO STOP THE MOMENTUM OF BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA!

WE WILL NOT ALLOW FUNDED GROUPS TO CONDUCT SMEAR CAMPAIGNS WITHOUT FIGHTING BACK, ON THE STREETS, IN THE COURTS AND WITH OUR MONEY AND OUR PROTESTS!

WE WILL NEVER AGAIN ALLOW REPUBLICAN SCARE, SMEAR AND GUILT-BY-ASSOCIATION TACTICS TO SWAY PUBLIC OPINION. OLD-STYLE DUMBED-DOWN POLITICS IS EFFECTIVELY ENDED, AND WILL BE DECLARED OFFICIALLY DEAD THE DAY OF JOHN MCCAIN'S IGNOMINIOUS DEFEAT.

Will the Media be able to handle Obama
Posted by: joze46 on Jun 22, 2008 11:37 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The question should be will the Media be able to handle Obama? Obama seems to change his mind as often as he changes his shoes. Yet always giving a master stroke of right back were we started from. There is no foreign policy. Step back and reflect on some domestic stuff. All very near being insane.

To be sure, if one grew in the center of Harlem New York, or the West side of Chicago, or the area of Watts Los Angeles, as a white that person will likely be dubious about any Black running for president, or how easily it will be to ruin our country.

Most if any statistics can be challenged to the MLK character test. Obama did highlight a failed group in that test. Here, Obama, Made an effort to bring forth an issue of immediate importance when making a speech about father’s day and dead beat black families. But there is a larger problem totally and shamefully ignored. For me, it is known and with little debate generations of illiterate Blacks were pushed through an educational system that have a very low comprehension in reading and writing and “Reasoning”. These cultural dilemmas likely spans several generations and can readily be observed when that cultural clock kicks in. Fixing this gap has possibilities and Obama addressed this by offering “free” community college to everyone. Let push the envelope to include free college to all retired citizens capable. Period no exceptions, just as we want universal heath care, no exceptions everyone is covered and taken care of.

Here, America is talking about an economic engine that will surpass global standards yet likely be harshly influence by those very same special interest groups. What is implied is realization that our economy is too influenced by not only the rich of the American elite but by the rich of the rest of the world, namely the Arabs. Especially the Arab Wahabbi types that control Americas need for oil right now. Via Bush and Company and the world class rich along with the Arabs have choked the American economy by fear and uncertainty all the while through the blanket of national security secrets is shoveling in American tax dollars as we all pay for this oil. Bush and Company adds the misery barrowing dollars from China and Japan for the well connected 29% of America that stash away trillions in secret baby trust fund accounts.

Hell yes there is race bigotry, as suggested by many politicians to send Blacks forced to volunteer because of no jobs to and endless war to fight for the rich Arabs and the Bin Laden family, close friends of Bush and Company to profiteer which can use Americas resources, life and tax dollars in the perfect storm for the next hundred years. America’s economy and infrastructure slowly disintegrates as we squabble with each other to spread freedom all the while slowly choking. If one wants to characterize martin Luther King in his test, just look at hard at Americas infrastructure in Black communities, many look like the war zone in Iraq or Afghanistan we send our troops into. On balance Osama Bin Laden is manipulating America, he should be able to; we trained him.

Michelle Is Fine As She Is

A few spouses got the rough treatment before all democratic spouses became fodder. Mary Todd Lincoln and Roosevelt.
But, Since 1992 when Hillary was the threatening strong woman and not the adoring gaze Nancy Reagan the republicans began to believe that all democratic spouses should be demonized.
Remember how Teresa Kerry was treated in 04 and to her credit she told one of those pretend Faux style journalists to 'shove it'.
Now it's Michelle's turn. While Cindy McShame strikes me as a stepford wife, the way repubicans like their women, Michelle is outspoken, down to earth and strong.
It's a pity that the media is doing the work for the right because they seem to have as much a problem with Michelle as they do. They simply want to cast her as a new Hillary. And she is not.
She is not looking to be co president and not off putting. I have seen her on Cspan and the audience loves her.
Michelle is very impressive and engaging and someone I admire. I am hoping that the press doesn't not continue to work with the republicans in taking this lovely woman down and changing her.
She is Fine as she is right now.

If a woman from the south side of Chicago had forged prescriptions and stolen drugs from a childrens charity, she would likely have been incarcerated and would have been forever branded a felon. Cindy McCain, a wealthy woman married to a powerful U.S. Senator, commited exactly those crimes (see current Newsweek cover article "What's Behind That Smile?") and skirted around the punishment to which most other citizens would have been subjected. Just imagine what the pundits would be doing with this if it had been Michelle Obama (a woman from south side Chicago) who had been addicted to drugs and committed theft and fraud? I don't judge Mrs. McCain for her drug addiction. She was troubled and needed help. What I do object to is her behaving so self-righteously in cattily dumping on Mrs. Obama and saying, "I don't know why she would say that. I've always been proud of my country." It's easy to feel proud when you benefit from the double standard in our justice system while your husband takes a hard-line re: punishment for drug use. It's a joke that the press is giving her a free pass when going after Michelle Obama. People who live in glass houses . . .

The Role of the First Lady
Posted by: Mimi on Jun 23, 2008 11:14 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The author is asking a serious question: How should journalists write about the First Lady? What is her role, who defines it, and what should "the angle" be?

I'd like to respond to this core question of the piece by defining the role of the First Lady in general and in these times, and then suggesting the"angle" that journalists should take.

THE ROLE
The moment a woman becomes "the First Lady," she acquires the power to define the nation's idea of the ideal American woman. She is a larger than life figure, as much symbol as person, subject to criticism in her role as her husband is in his role as President. She can inspire and offend with a sudden gaffe, an innocent misstep, and discover the hard way that her idea of her role conflicts with the pundits, the journalists, the media MSN and alternative alike. It is inevitable that she will be unable to please all as she navigates the American minefield of gender.

But the role of First Lady is also more than just about the feminine and women. A First Lady is uniquely empowered to address broad cultural, social and moral issues. Betty Ford took on addiction; Lady Bird Johnson, the natural beauty of America; Jackie-O, American aesthetics and the rise of corporate sponsorship of the arts.

There are many social causes and issues that Michelle Obama could
legitimately embrace as First Lady, picking up on her husband's concern about our "empathy deficit," for example, and speak to our social responsibilities as a nation in the broadest sense.

Michelle Obama, should she become First Lady, comes into the role at a time when the role of First Lady is ripe and ready for "change," the Obama mantra, and that, I think, is the ANGLE that journalists should take. It is fair, I think, to hold the Presidential Spouse to the same mission and vision for the country and for Washington as her husband holds. But she is expected to fulfill this mission NOT as a co-president (the Clinton's breach of power), but AS "First Lady," embracing this role as unique to her and her responsibility.

The question journalists should ask about Michelle Obama, and the direction of their observations, should be about how she will go about the mission of change in her role as First Lady. What does she want to change; why; how will she go about this as First Lady?

From all the evidence of her biography and personality, should Michele Obama become First Lady, she will change the role of women in this nation by integrating traditional feminine qualities (beautiful, fashionable, a devoted mother) with feminism (Princeton and Harvard educated corporate lawyer and clearly an equal, deeply respected marital partner). Journalists should track how she is navigating these two polarities in the larger context of a mission for change. As I said, she cannot please all; but she can certainly be observed, interviewed, and analyzed for how she is going about the role that defines our American ideas about the role of women, and how her idea of her role as First Lady fits into the Presidential mission for change.

Journalists should also take the angle that the woman a president loves, and the way he treats her, also reveals to us how a president regards the role of women in American society. McCain clearly regards a woman as a trophy, but Obama regards Michelle as a gift. Big difference.

What would be exquisite, in my mind, would be Barack stepping up to the plate as president and husband and saying to journalists, You trivialize her, you trivialize American women. And as President, I won't allow that.

Lemme see now, her opposite was a drug addict, stole drugs for her habit from a non-profit she was volunteering for and is the daughter of a multi-millionare beer distributor who managed to qualify for a less than stellar college in the southeast. Her status as a senator's wife and rich dad's daughter meant she didn't do time or get charged with any number of felonies associated with her addition (three years of addiction). Michelle's dad was a blue collar city worker in Chicago, she put herself through Harvard law school and - as far as I know - doesn't have an addiction problem in her not too distant past -- oh year and doesn't use botox to scare the wrinkles away --- and Michelle needs a makeover?????

The Target
Posted by: penobscotdziekuje@yahoo.com on Jun 23, 2008 3:05 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Questions we media folks need to ask ourselves: Just what IS the story covering a future first wife? What angle shall we choose?
Where should journalists aim their arrows at a point at the target, which is Michelle Obama? To whom is our audience? Are we going to take a glamourous approach as People magazaine or tale a more analytical approach as The New York Times, for example.
There's no shortage of questions but the answers are unclear. Whether what course we follow, we must remain steadfast to our ethics and good judgment and not smear her as others are trying to do, because they're not journalists.
In covering the latest (and beautiful person-my opinion) woman to capture the hearts of some, let's hope we'll be fair and impartial. From a journalistic point of view, we ought to know that we DO exhibit power of the press to shape or destroy a person who is thrust into the blindingly shining, white-hot political spotlight.
Women work extremely hard these days; for those who know what it's like to do a daily juggling act of family, job, obligations, etc. and she doesn't hold a monopoly on womanhood. But now she's standing at the threshold of history-without stating the obvious here.
Michelle doesn't actively seek notoriety; but as the dog days of summer scorch on, we'll know more about her than ourselves. She'll be an ongoing story that'll give the public some reflection. She's very intelligent and outspoken. As a slogan said on a shirt-"A well behaved woman doesn't make history." So women, go out in this world and be agents of change! Let's remember that.

Michelle left out the "really" when she gave the same speech again in a different Wisconsin town, but Whoopie missed that. This "proud of my country" statement was a written part of Michelle's speech that was given more than once. It's certainly not as intolerable as Republicans say it is, but it is telling of how naive and unprepared the Obamas are for what you say and don't say in a political campaign against Republicans...

HUFFINGTON POST continues to post a misleading headline above DeMille & Kennedy's weekly blog about stories the traditional MSM has missed. If HP posts a blog, it has made it into the MSM since HP has been a part of MSM for a few years. Press HP to change the headline above DeM & K's blog to be truthy. Maybe HP's headline writers will draft & post a new headline for DeM & K's blog at long last.
Yes, I'm a bit off thread but HP ought to own up to the fact that HP is MSM. Press HP about this in the comments for DeM & K's blog.
