Key Women Clinton Supporters: McCain Won't Get Our Vote

By Ari Berman, TheNation.com. Posted June 12, 2008.

McCain is out of touch with women's lives. Women know that he would be a dangerous choice for them.

John McCain has made it clear that his campaign intends to aggressively court supporters of Hillary Clinton, including her major base of female voters.

Now top female Clinton supporters have a message for McCain: not so fast.

"The McCain campaign has been talking about the mythology of trying to pick up HRC supporters," says Ellen Malcolm, president of EMILY'S List. "This is a pipe dream, because he's out of touch with their lives and the issues they care about."

"We are here to sound the alarm bell," said Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of South Florida on a conference call. "We are going to work hard to make sure that John McCain is not allowed to pull the wool over women's eyes one more day."

Wasserman Schultz pointed to McCain's opposition to universal health care, universal pre-K, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and raising the minimum wage as some of the many reasons female voters will rally around Barack Obama come November. "As a young woman in America who is a mom with three young kids, there is a real fear that John McCain will be dangerous for women," Wasserman Schultz said. "He will impede our progress."

Malcolm and Wasserman Schultz referenced a new Gallup poll showing Obama leading McCain by 13 points among female voters, a six-point bump since Clinton exited the race and endorsed Obama. Gallup found that Obama is now "matching Clinton's performance among women versus McCain." In addition, Obama leads McCain among women 50 and older -- a key chunk of Clinton's base -- by six points, after trailing McCain among that group when Clinton remained in the race.

McCain's ratings with female voters are currently well below George W. Bush's 2004 numbers: Bush lost female voters to John Kerry by just three points by appealing to "security moms." And among non-college-educated white women -- another key segment of Clinton's base -- Bush beat Kerry by 19 points. In '06, Democrats cut that margin to five, a big reason why they recaptured Congress. If Obama can match that '06 number, there's a good chance Democrats will recapture the White House.

Wasserman Schultz admitted that many Clinton supporters are still in a "period of mourning." According to Malcolm, "There is a lot of anger about sexism in the media and the ongoing unwillingness to say anything positive about Clinton and her campaign. But that is about the media, and I don't think that transfers to Senator Obama."

EMILY'S List is planning to mobilize female voters on behalf of Obama in key battleground states, just as they did for Kerry, Gore and Clinton. An endless war in Iraq, skyrocketing gas prices, tax breaks for oil companies and a faltering economy are issues that deeply concern female voters. If Obama emphasizes these topics, Clinton supporters say, he can win over pro-Clinton skeptics. "The proof will be in the pudding," Wasserman Schultz says, "as he campaigns across the country and talks about these issues that matter to women. This is what will warm women to him."

We will NOT vote for Obama if he were the last candidate in the world. We love our free country and we do not live in fear of muslim countries that Obama by his own words would stand with if there were a war. Obama wants to raise taxes, raise capital gains, is a marxist, a deceitful liar and thinks he is above everyone and thinks he is a rock star. Give me a man like Mccain who is willing to fight for this country and is more intelligent and will exercise good judgement.

are still using their intellect and intuition to make the right choice.
Having Cut my teenage teeth on the Women's movement on the '70's. I was not only outraged by 'Queen' Hillary's attempt to undermine the basic tenents of our efforts- but the number of woman who fell for her Ruse.
Come on ladies- When the media played along that she was the 'Heir Apparent' No one said a Word. but as soon as she really had to compete on a level Playing field she Screamed Foul! When it was not taken hook line and Sinker her claims to be qualified and Ready- and she had to Prove it- she failed. She Was granted the Opportunity to compete, but when shown she had to play under the same circumstance as the Boys (who have been personally attacked through out political history) She Cried Sexism.
As a Woman who has worked in a number of male dominated fields I have never fell for the undermining offer to lower the bar for me. the "Little lady ' mentality which only feeds the sexist mentality. don't Lower the Bar- leave it where it is or even put it higher, I have confidene I Don't need Your help to clear it! I relish when the Bar is actually increased and I clear it and am able to Watch them eat shit!In fact that is one way I have EARNED my place at the Table- My Effort proves my abilities are undeniable. There is NO Crying in the War on Sexism! To Do so only Proves their Point!Be a Cow Girl - buck Up!And if you are 'beat' by a male who is truely more capable- show some Grace and congradulate him for his Efforts- We are Seeking Equality Not Pay Back at any and all costs.
Stop Being 'Feminists' who play by the 'good Ol Boy' mentality- Be a Libber, and make them eat crow legitimately!

I believe this is a Republican troll story made up to frighten the rest of us. See, Clinton really divided the Democrats! See the stupid women run! Run, women, run! Vote for McCain, who stands against everything Clinton stands for! Stupid stupid women! McCain is the dudely dude that women will fall for, because their girlfriend stood them up!

Excuse me, once again, a Republican fable for the masses, not reality.

Many Hillary democrats are Conservative Democrats and will not support a canidate as liberal as Obama.
There are many Hillary supporters that are racist. It is a shame but it is a fact.
There are many that feel that Obama and many news agencies disrespected women in the primaries.
There are some that will think Obama is surrouded by too many radical people. And wonder why he would have such far out there friends if he did not believe some of the hateful things his friends believe.
Many women believe Republicans can better defend thier families from terrorist attacks on our shores.

There are lots of reasons other than choice for women to vote for McCain.

IN YOUR DREAMS... my e-mails are running 35 to 1 for McCain over Obama

And that's THOUSANDS of precinct captains and county and state delegates to the convention... die hard dyed-in-the-wool faithful Democrats, many of whom have already QUIT the party and registered as Independents, and some even as Republicans.

The "abortion" argument doesn't wash, because I and the rest of these folks believe that McCain's already won the White House, and Roe vs. Wade's AS GOOD AS been overturned ALREADY.

OBAMA CANNOT AND WILL NOT EVER WIN; McCain and more Supreme Court justices that will rollback Roe vs. Wade ARE A DONE DEAL.

This country needs more cannon fodder for its endless wars. Abortion will be repealed.

Everyone who thinks Obama has a prayer is a hopeless dupe of Karl Rove. THREE MILLION BLACK AND MINORITY VOTERS were disenfranchised in 2004 and HAD THEIR VOTES THROWN AWAY; those LAWS are STILL ON THE BOOKS.

Hillary supporters are older; wiser; we've SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE, and we KNOW HOW IT ENDS.

The DNC did it to us in 2004 with Kerry.

Suck it up; it's over, McCain has won, WE TOLD YOU SO.

This does not bode well for republicans

Among all women, Sen. Obama has a big advantage: 52% to 33% over Sen. McCain.

Sen. Obama leads among independent voters, 41% to 36%.

To Sen. Obama's advantage, the 6/11/08 Journal/NBC poll results seem to debunk two widely held conclusions from the Democrats' nomination contest. Exit polls of Democratic voters suggested many of Sen. Clinton's supporters wouldn't vote for Sen. Obama in November if he is the Democratic nominee. In particular, pro-Clinton Hispanics were generally thought to be cold to Sen. Obama.

In the poll, however, voters who chose Sen. Clinton in the primaries said by a 3-to-1 ratio, 61% to 19%, that they plan to vote for Sen. Obama over Sen. McCain in November.

By 62% to 28%, Hispanic voters support Sen. Obama. "That does not bode well for Republicans" in the Southwest, the Republican pollster added, in swing states such as Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado, where Hispanic voters are numerous enough to tip the result.

How stupid do we think women are?

It's probably fair to say Hillary-supporters tend to be voters who pay attention, in general, to the issues.

The idea that female (or male) voters who pay attention would vote for McNasty out of sheer spite is simply ludicrous.

The type of morons who would make that choice, male or female, are likely already ensconced in McNasty's corner, making their obscenely stupid voices heard via misspelling-riddled 'support the fair tax' emails to Congress.

As for those women (and men -- one was even gay!) we see pledging to avenge Hillary by voting for McNasty -- clearly, her campaign's now bucking for the Vice-slot...and minions are targeting "random" news interviews & town hall questions accordingly.

Had Hillary NOT chosen to toe the corporate line, she might not be in this position. But the people of both genders have spoken, and it looks like liberal women have been paying attention all along.
