Is Clinton Staying In the Race To Say, 'I Told You So'?

By David Corn, Mother Jones Online. Posted May 14, 2008.

Clinton may be bolstering her position for a possible run in 2012.

Ever since she failed to cream Barack Obama in Indiana, pundits and analysts have been chewing this over -- and now that the West Virginia primary is done, even though she won by a massive two-to-one margin, the question still hovers. After all, Obama has racked up an insurmountable lead in pledged delegates and has pulled ahead in the superdelegate count, meaning the race is essentially complete. Clinton and her campaign advisers have argued that she can still win the nomination if she does well in the last few primaries and then persuades superdelegates she is the better candidate to do battle with John McCain. But the superdelegates don't seem receptive to her case. And the fact that she has throttled back on the anti-Obama rhetoric in recent days -- she barely she criticized her in her not-so-jubilant West Virginia victory speech -- is a signal that she may not believe her own spin and is merely halfheartedly trudging toward the last primaries (Montana and South Dakota) on June 3.

Yet there she is -- an active and hard-working candidate. And the commentators have come up with several obvious explanations:

  • She wants to remain in the hunt just in case something happens. (A video appears of Wright calling for armed revolution? Fox News produces Obama's Secret Muslim Membership card?)
  • She is staying in for one last round of fundraising. (Her campaign is $20 million in debt and owes her $11 million.)
  • She wants to end her historic campaign with a string of victories: West Virginia, Kentucky, and Puerto Rico. (Puerto Rico? She is a senator from New York.)
  • And the most obvious of them all: she's not yet ready to face the music.
  • No doubt, a combo of these rationales is fueling Clinton's impossible ride. But let me add one more to the mix: Clinton is setting up the biggest I-told-you-so in recent American political history.

Assume Obama is the nominee and imagine that he loses to McCain in the fall. Where would that leave Clinton? She would be able to wag her finger at her party, and she wouldn't even have to say those haughty words. She and her die-hard confederates would be able to note simply and smugly, We did try to warn you. In the following four years, they would remind reporters, party leaders, Democratic voters, and everyone else, over and over, that they had said that Obama was unelectable, that they had said he could not win blue-collar (that is, white) voters. This Clinton chorus would not cease singing this song for a nanosecond. Can't you just see Bill Clinton and Terry McAuliffe lecturing cable news hosts on this point? Hiding their schadenfreude -- just barely -- they would note that they had won the fundamental argument of 2008: who understands American voters the best? And in this scenario, Hillary Clinton would be well-positioned for 2012. In fact, she would have such bragging rights as to be able to question any other Democrat's entry into the presidential contest. She might even expect the party this time to hand her the nomination on a platter -- accompanied with one big apology.

If John McCain wins in the fall, who may or may not win the presidency in 2012 is the least of anyone's problems.

It matters not just who wins, but how he or she wins. I don’t think Hillary is a racist in the conventional sense, but it’s clear that she’s willing to pander to and inculcate racist sentiments to win, and in this she reminds us of George HW Bush and his Willie Horton advertisements. We don’t need, at this time of unprecedented economic, military, foreign relations, environmental, healthcare and constitutional crises, a divisive, polarizing and zero-sum-paradigm driven chief executive. We need not only someone who can offer plausible solutions (as both Democrats can and McCain manifestly cannot), but someone who can unite, inspire and conciliate. And of the major candidates in the contest, only Obama can do that.

"And there's little doubt that she will campaign fiercely and enthusiastically for Obama --"

Um, really?
Also, why would she assume that she would have won if Obama did lose to McCain? Oh that's right. She's an entitled egotist and a war criminal with no sense of shame.

Hillary Clinton should understand this: she is never going to be president. I desperately want to see a woman in the White House in my lifetime - but not her. She's positioning herself to run in 2012? If she ends up ruining this thing for Barack Obama, she not only will not be nominated in 2012, she won't even be renominated to run for senate in that year. There are thousands of us here in New York state who will see to that.

Another four years of GOP control of the executive will surely ruin this country - that's assuming it is not beyond repair already. Apparently this means not a thing to her. While ot may be presumtuous to say that she does not love her country, it is obvious that she loves herself a whole hell of a lot more. How does this woman even sleep at night?

She has already got the insane war mongering bit down cold. She is well on her way in terms of manipulating the soft and official channels of the executive branch to do as the neocons please thanks to all that "experience" she gained while living in the White House. She has a good start on working with the "vast right wing conspiracy" in the media. Just make her Veep and it will be as if Cheney lives on even if it turns out he has a human heart that finally dies a mortal death.

Clinton takes Indiana by a ‘razor’ and Obama wins North Carolina by a huge margin. Nevertheless, Kentucky, Montana and West Virginia are still to come.

The Democratic race for nomination is still very much alive – and most likely to be decided by superdelegates

If you’re tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama

If you haven't done so yet, please write a message to each of your state's superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com

Obama Supporters:

Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It's that easy...

It takes a moment, but what's a few minutes now worth to get Clinton in office?! Those are really worth !

Why Can't Clinton Put Obama Away?
Posted by: ChicagoPaul on May 14, 2008 6:39 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
That's the real question. Instead, we continually hear that it is Obama who is (apparently) too weak and not being able to put Clinton away.

Here's the perspective:

She was the front-runner before ANY of this started. It was pretty much assumed that she would get the nomination. She was way ahead in the polls.

Ever since the Iowa caucus, she has not be able to come up with a strategy to put Obama away.

Of course he outspends her. #1 He has the money because he has raised buckets more than she has. #2 If she had more, she'd spend more. (Proof: look how far in debt her campaign is now: over $20 million!) #3 He HAS to outspend her since she is the one with the name recognition advantage. How else can he introduce himself to the voters if he doesn't spend money to meet, greet, and speak with them?

"Rocky" is having a hard time putting her opponent away because a dwindling number of people have been able to trust her.

Trust is a tricky thing, but I when you see how she and her campaign managers continually "move the goalposts" in order to put the results in a "better" light, people see through that - at least most people do.

When she begins pandering between that races, however, the general public has become alarmed.

Yes, the West Virginians seem to be willing to trust Senator Clinton. BUT, since last night, two more "super" delegates have thrown their support to Senator Obama.

Senator Clinton cannot put Senator Obama away because her strength is dwindling. Just like the "real" Rocky, she is hoping for a miraculous knockout blow.

In the meantime, she is looking pretty bad, almost pathetic. She is running the risk of permanently damaging herself and, unfortunately, the Democratic party.

No, I'm not telling her to throw in the towel. I'm not telling her manager to do so either. I'm not even telling the referee (Dr. Dean) to declare it a TKO. I think this should go the full 15 rounds.

Then, she will know for sure that she couldn't put away her opponent. The ringside judges (voters) will have spoken.

Rematch?

There are still about 200 + 40 uncommitted supers in the game. Clinton has most of these in her pocket but they will not commit until she receives enough elected delegates, that when added together they can put her over the top legally. Clinton still thinks she can win, there is no time like now. If this happens I hope the demons split. I hear all the time “we need a third party”, there is no time like now.

The blue collar workers are the canary in the mine. When they go completely down, the rest of us will follow. If you are not in the top echelons of our society, you will face the same future of job outsourcing, lower wages to younger or less skilled workers, no safety nets, you're on your own and if you fail it's your fault. The dice are loaded. Professional workers are seeing the same things happen to them that happened to blue collar. The time to address the real issues is upon us. To ignore these blue collar voters and their plight is to ignore our future. I can't see how anyone in their right mind would vote for John McCain and I hope that the voters who support Hillary will go to Obama. The best way to insure that they vote Democrat is to put Hillary on the ticket as Vice President. I know that many of you don't like Hillary, but she does have strong support among certain voting blocs. To ignore that is to "cut off your nose to spite your face".

"This is not to say that Hillary Clinton is wishing for an Obama defeat in November."

C'mon Dave! Why do you negate your whole line of argumentation in this way? Have the guts to stick to your guns - if the Clintons are working to cause maximum damage to Obama so that this "royal family in waiting" doesn't have to wait 8 years - then why not set them up for the blame?

It is now patently obvious that this is why the Clinton clique continues in the race, as this allows them to continue to snipe at Obama. If they withdrew now, they'd have to clam up as "loyal Democrats".

That is called politics, Dave. The Clintons and the rest of the conservative right wing that dominates that Party put their politics above loyalty to a party apparatus. After all, what good is a Party if it doesn't reflect their reactionary politics? Stop putting mindless loyalty to the Democratic Party above progressive politics. Start being CONSISTENTLY political.

If Obama loses in November, it is because he has run the same campaign as McGovern,
Dukakis, Kerry and to a lesser extent Gore.
Obama has shown, as recently as yesterday that he believes he will win with a new coalition and doesn't need the blue collar white Americans. With only 25% of Americans having college degrees that is a risky plan.
You can claim that the Clintons and Karl Rove don't know what they are talking about but Clinton and Bush both won two terms. There is no one on Obama's campaign staff that has ever run a national campaign and they are making the same mistakes that Democrats have made in the past. If Obama loses, it is his strategy that lost it for him and if that gives Clinton a chance in 2012 to run, she would be foolish to give up something that has been handed to her on a silver platter.

An article worth reading:

"Watergate-Era Judiciary Chief of Staff, Jerry Zeifman:
Hillary Clinton Fired For Lies, Unethical Behavior"

by Dan Calabrese

As Hillary Clinton came under increasing scrutiny for her story about facing sniper fire in Bosnia, one question that arose was whether she has engaged in a pattern of lying.

The now-retired general counsel and chief of staff of the House Judiciary Committee, who supervised Hillary when she worked on the Watergate investigation, says Hillary's history of lies and unethical behavior goes back farther -- and goes much deeper than anyone realizes.

Jerry Zeifman, a lifelong Democrat, supervised the work of 27-year-old Hillary Rodham on the committee. Hillary got a job working on the investigation at the behest of her former law professor, Burke Marshall, who was also Sen. Ted Kennedy's chief counsel in the Chappaquiddick affair.

When the investigation was over, Zeifman fired Hillary from the committee staff and refused to give her a letter of recommendation -- one of only three people who earned that dubious distinction in Zeifman's 17-year career.

Why?

"Because she was a liar," Zeifman said in an interview last week. "She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality."

QUESTION: Would Hillary torpedo Barack Obama's campaign so McCain could win in November and allow her to run against him in 2012?

Ask her. She always tells the truth.

Yes, this is quite plausible. Although , if John McCain is 71, surely Hillary could opt to campaign for Obama, serve in the Obama cabinet or as Attorney General, and then run again at age 69.

The most troubling aspect of Hillary's relentless quest is that she may have sealed the deal for McCain by making it "ok" for working class whites in industrial states to oppose Obama. These voters can, thanks to Hillary's campaign, be good Dems in the primary and vote for McCain in November. She's done the hard sales work and McCain gets to be the auto showroom manager who simply gets the voters to sign the final papers and seal the deal. I don't believe, given his economic and war policies, that McCain could accomplish this without Bill and Hillary's color-coded campaign. He, McCain, owes them big time.

Clinton is still in the race for the reasons you mentioned. She is hoping something will sink Obama at the last minute.

At the very least, the longer she holds out, the more splintered the Democratic party will be come November. Then the greater chances Obama will lose. And if he loses, then she will definitely spin it as an "I told you so" in preparation for a run in 2012.

But as usual Hillary's strategy is badly flawed.

First, she has always had a high negative rating, not only among Republicans but also among Democrats. And this perception has been reinforced by her campaign.

Second, she destroyed much of the Clinton legacy and influence. Voter suppression tactics, highly negative campaigning, and playing the race card. Bill was previously looked upon in a positive light and Hillary shared a bit of that, but now many Democrats realize why Republicans dislike them so much.

Third, if Obama loses Dems will blame Clinton, at least partially. This is especially true assuming that Republicans will use some of the same attacks against Obama that Clinton used.

Finally, Clinton doesn't realize that she's finished in politics now. She jumped the shark with her white blue collar comment recently. That comment will come back to haunt her whenever she runs for any elected office. She's going to have a very difficult time trying to repair her reputation.

In case anyone's interested, CNN--you know, the typical MSM outlet that is promoting this thing as if it's still a race, thus pulling in viewers for their corporate sponsors--has a tool for assigning numbers to each candidate and extrapolating the result.

I did it and found that Billary needs to average over 67 percent in the remaining primaries and the super-delegates to squeak out a win. Oh yeah, that's likely.

Kudos from Canada on doing the right thing.

I could not disagree more with this paragraph

This is not to say that Hillary Clinton is wishing for an Obama defeat in November. And there's little doubt that she will campaign fiercely and enthusiastically for Obama -- if only to preserve her standing in the party and to earn good will among his devotees. But like any good politician, she now has to consider all the possibilities, all the angles. And as she determines what to do here and now, she must consider what an Obama loss would mean for her own political future.

Hillary is doing her level best to divide the party along racial lines and - since she can't win the nomination - deny Obama the presidency.

Where did the Wright stuff come from? When did it come?

It came from the Clinton campaign after it was mathematically virtually impossible for her to win.

I have been arguing this for months with my son - he finally came around a couple of days ago.

Zero Political Capital

I think Hillary may indeed hope for an Obama loss so that she can run in 2012. But where she miscalculates is that, if Obama loses, she will be the main reason for the loss in many voters' minds, at least in my mind. She will have ZERO political capital after an Obama loss to McCain. She has not only hurt Obama with her racially-charged attacks on Obama, she has hurt herself.

Top Ten Reasons I will never vote for Hillary Clinton

10. I was a stay at home mom AND A FEMINIST who chose baking cookies over a law career and still do not appreciate her condescending attitude towards my career choice.

9. She voted for the war in Iraq and can't seem to get her story straight about her new found "opposition" to the murderous policies of George W. Bush.

8. I am sick to death of the Clintons and Bushes and their ilk assuming the Presidency is theirs by Divine Right. Talk about elitist!

7. Whether or not she comes right out and says it, by keeping quiet about racist attitudes and remarks in this race she has revealed a racist streak in her own character. This is not the kind of person I want speaking for me as a human being or an American citizen.

6. She fabricates history to bolster her image. OK, I'll come right out and say it: she's a LIAR, who will say or do anything to pander to whomever she's speaking to at the moment. Again, not the kind of person I can trust to lead with my welfare--not her own--in mind.

5. She has embarrassed me with her see-through populism. I hoped for and expected better of the first WOMAN who had a chance to become President. Gina Davis did a better job of being the kind of female President I want on TV.

4. I've never understood why she didn't choose to run for Senate from her home state, representing people that she knew and had ties with instead of suddenly becoming a New Yorker. Oh wait, maybe it was because it was more politically expedient to do so in her ten year plan to get back to the White House! Can I have faith in or trust somebody that transparent and manipulative?

3. Her ego. Her arrogance. Her wealth. I'm sure her multi-millions truly keep her in touch with the needs and worries of REAL people.

2. The policies she has so far put forth do not address the urgency of the environmental crisis; the restoration of the Constitution; an end to the stranglehold corporations and lobbyists have on our government; true healthcare reform (one payer); true election reform; true tax reform; or an end to the power of the military industrial complex. Anybody who could even consider OBLITERATING another country shouldn't be let any where near the White House.

1. She is not and can never be the beacon of hope that BARACK OBAMA is. We need a new kind of leadership for this country, not a McBush or a McSame. We need a leader who will heal gaps, not widen them. Hillary needed to stop playing to "selective" (old vs. young, white vs. black, women vs. the world, rich vs. poor, college grads vs. those not able to attend college, jobless vs. employed, red vs. blue, conservative vs. liberal) crowds months ago. I want healing, problem-solving, and a different sort of America for my kids. I'm betting on BARACK OBAMA to take us there.
