Arianna Huffington Storms NYC With New Book, Skewering McCain as a 'Pandering Pawn of the Right'

By Don Hazen, AlterNet. Posted May 15, 2008.

With the timing that PR people drool over, Arianna Huffington hit New York City in a mad dash of media attention and activities this past Friday to promote her new book with the mouthful of a title: Right is Wrong -- How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution, and Made Us All Less Safe (And What You Need to Know to End the Madness).

Just as Huffington was arriving in New York, she revealed -- on her blog, of course -- that John McCain bashed George Bush something nasty at a dinner party in L.A. in 2000. And that night McCain went so far as to insist that he didn't vote for the Bush Leaguer in that election. The New York Times and other media ran with the story, and it was a marvel to watch as Huffington, always multitasking, handled the press on McCain while effortlessly hammering away on the themes of her book. With the book's last chapter titled: "John McCain, Hijacked by the Right," it all made for a nice, neat package.

As Huffington traversed the storm-whipped Manhattan -- one of those nasty urban days where wind and rain snarled traffic and made empty cabs a rarity, twisted umbrellas into awkward shapes, and generally made life damp, wrinkled and miserable -- she stayed dry and laughingly suggested that it was a good tactic to have McCain repeating over and over how he voted for and supports George Bush, since Bush's approval numbers were in the basement (under 30 percent).

Early in Huffington's N.Y. day were appearances on Air America Radio and on Laura Flander's pioneering new daily multimedia TV/Web show, called Grit TV. I joined Flanders for a feisty give and take with Huffington, focused both on McCain and one of the fundamental themes of her book: "How the corporate media has become the right wing's best friend." Watch the video in the window to your right.

Flanders, a persistently under-utilized media talent, is trying something altogether different with a national TV magazine show on Free Speech TV. (The show airs on satellite. It also has a daily presence with streaming video on the creative blog FireDogLake, where former Hollywood producer Jane Hamsher and team are building a powerful presence by embracing activism and creative media strategies.)

In our interview with Flanders, Huffington hammered away at the corporate media for enabling the worst right-wing habits and at the Democrats for needing a spine implant. Meet the Press's Tim Russert got eviscerated for being a zombie of conventional wisdom and rerunning, over and over, ideas that have been consistently and widely discredited by journalists and experts.

In terms of Bill Kristol, the New York Times' new columnist whose record on Iraq is beyond horrible, she asks the question: "How wrong do you have to be to get kicked out of the media? I kiddingly said that Kristol should be sent to Guantánamo for his war crimes, but Arianna, ever on message, said, "No, we should close Gitmo down."

Huffington's public festivities on Friday ended at a book party at the Chambers Hotel, one of those new, stylish boutique models that have sprouted up as NYC hotel prices have gone the way of oil ($400-$500 a night for a room has become the norm). The party was hosted by Huffington gal pal and star author Kathy Freston, her husband Tom, former head honcho at MTV and CEO of Viacom, and Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone mag owner and his partner Matt Nye. The hotel offered a signature Blood Orange Cosmo that had more than a few party goers feeling a little tipsy.

Yeah. This is a book I'm definately going to read even though she is essentially preaching to the choir as far as I'm concerned. Getting people to understand what has happened to this country is essential for it's survival and Arianna is the perfect vehicle for conveying that message. She's smart, funny and extremely telegenic. She also sounds like Zsa Zsa Gabor - did you ever notice that?

I just hope that the American people are able to pick up on the message. You've got to admit that we're not the sharpest knives in the international drawer. Think about it: Barack Obama is the most extraordinary candidate to come down the pike in over forty years. What's it going top say about us as a people if he is rejected in November? I don't even want to thik about it.

and her rich friends! They--and her new book--will surely save us working class folks who are at this moment begining to go under, financially, by the millions. But Arianna and her friends will save us, right? Right?

The Huffington Post articles appear to be of some value until you read it and realize how little is actually discussed- what real underlying information has be OMITTED. How much they stay above any real controversal insight.
Her Book in a prime example- Pointing out th eobvious, yet failing to acknowledge that there is a'Lunatic Fringe' in the Democratic party which has Aided the Red Neo CONS- the Blue Arm of the Neo CON infestation (Clintons, LIEbermann, Kerrys' ,Edwards, bayh, feinstein, Ford Gephhardt,Gore,Landdrieu,McAuliffe,Nunn..)the DLC and their enablers (Pelosi, Reid, Levin, Boxer.. ).Notice the names that ran for Pres but couldn't Seal the Deal,Why because the BASE couldn't see much difference between them and the Republicans - because there is none- other than Rhetorical Stratedgy.
Arianna talks teh Talks- but constantly avoids Walking the Walk- just like th DLC and their Enablers. Why am I throwing my 'Kucinich' vote to Obama- becasue he is not in the Blue Covert operative Ranks, Why do I find my self Cheering Webb,Binden, Richardson, Dodd,Feingold, McCaskill and yes even Kennedy- Old School Dems ...Labor, civil & Minority rights, Environment, Education, healthcare...All with out the help of the Inc Profiteers. I've printed a cheat sheet of DLC members for the time I watch CSPAN to KNOW Who Is Really Talking- "D" & "R" are not specific enough (often have been confused or sure of a 'misprint' under some in Congress' Names- Now I know Who I'm listening to in Reality)
Oh and if you happen to say Anything which the HuffPo does not like- They not only censor Your comments ,they out right Ban You- Very Much 1984 big Brother Website- Do you have a Direct line into Cheney's office so he may Monitor and Squelch any dissent Ari? And do NOT dare to suggest (even tongue in cheek) any 'Investment ' bankers be held Personally responsilbe for their crimes committed against the Citizens of this country and around the world- it's a No No!

This "us working people" tactic is already getting old

Suddenly the phrase "us working people" has defined what appears to be a separate sect deserving special concern thanks to Hillary Clinton's quasi-racist remarks. Suddenly the term "hard working" has become a trophy only given to white people.

The truth is that those among us working hardest for the least are probably illegal immigrants. Doesn't EVERYONE know that the "hard working people" in this country come in a rainbow of colors?

Arianna H. deserves whatever money she earns. She does after all work harder for her income than people like Cindy McMillionaire McCain. The Huffington Post provides an invaluable service.

The big problem with money is that too few people have enough to survive, no matter how hard they work. Dividing the working poor to make them resent one another is very retro and boring.

Who is John McCain

Who is John McCain?

Is the man who correctly stated in his 2000 campaign that GW Bush is psychological unfit for the challenges of the Presidency?

Or is he the staunch supporter of catastrophic Bush Administration policies of the past eight years?

Is John McCain the man who apologized for opposing the MLK holiday, or is he the man who supports the display of the Confederate flag over government buildings?

John McCain has the right words and humble attitude for every audience.

This chameleon like flexibility may serve a Senator well, but can we afford a President who only tells us what we want to hear?

Lesson: To be a media-popular "progressive", publish mostly wet pulp
Posted by: thoughtcriminal on May 15, 2008 7:24 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The Huff Post and Alternet do have a lot in common, in that they mostly publish political fluff that doesn't address any core issues. That's not progressive. A progressive news site would include daily footage from Iraq and other parts of the world, and would focus on promoting reporters.

Alternet's message is that "the mix is the message" - the stories they choose reflect whatever agenda it is that they are serving - and what Alternet and many other progressive-liberal sites do not like to talk about are the capital liberalization, intellectual property rights, and economic warfare being practiced against helpless people by the U.S. government today.

I think the real goal of Alternet, Huffington Post, Democracy Now, and many of the other popular liberal news web sites is actually the same as that of most of the other elements of the U.S. corporate press - protect the interests of the wealthiest people on the planet, while spewing out whatever might meet the general tastes of their particular demographic.

That is what I believe has been going on in the left-wing progressive press for about a decade now, and the effort was really amped up after Seattle 1999.

Most readers here would be willing to agree that a secretive network of right-wing billionaires funds much of the right wing press, such as the National Review, FOX News, and so on. When the left wing press routinely ignores and refuses to cover in depth many important stories, one must start to wonder if the same thing is going on on the left.

Notice, for example, that Alternet almost never runs Iraq violence footage - same as the mainstream corporate press. Alternet publishes endless articles on biofuels and food that are deliberate distortions of the issue, and that absolutely ignore the critical role of capital liberalization, intellectual property rights, and manipulative speculative attacks on banks and nations - such as was the case in 1997.

No, these sites all appear to be image cleanup operations. They all played a very large role in spreading and promoting the 9/11 nonsense that was cooked up the corporate astroturf group that called itself the 911 Truth Movement.

I always wondered why the left wing press was treating the 911 PR people as honest actors, as Amy Goodman did in her infamous Popular Mechanics - Loose Change "debate."

She worked to portray 9/11 issues as a debate between professional PR people who claimed that the Pentagon was hit by a missile and that the WTC was blown up, and those who claimed that did not happen. Joshua Holland and others took this same angle.

They all conveniently ignored the real issue, which was to what extent the U.S. government had prior warnings of impending hijackings and whether or not Bush & Cheney decided to allow them to take place. Instead, they helped create a bogus debate that was largely intended to smear anyone asking the real questions as a loon who thought the CIA blew up the WTC.

I mean, look at Ariana's site today: "Where is Al Gore?" - but has it ever crossed your mind that maybe Al Gore's work bringing global warming to the public's attention is probably a far greater service to humanity than getting involved in some partisan bickering and an effort to paint Obama as some kind of holy wandering prophet?

Christ, the guy would probably make a good manager, and has a decent record, tho a bit friendly with the coal, nuclear and other large energy interests, and unlikely to really make much change in U.S. foreign policy agendas and practices - that will be up to the people, and that means more Seattles, which is the last thing that the corporate sponsors of the left, center and right-wing media want to see - because it draws attention to issues they'd rather see kept quiet.

Slightly related topic - next Tuesday UK MPs are voting on amendments which could see the term limit for abortion reduced from 24weeks to 22, 20, 18, 16, 14 or even 12 weeks. If you or anyone you know is a UK resident or citizen please ask them to contact their MP today or tomorrow and come along to the protest outside parliament on Tuesday evening.

More info on http://www.abortionrights.org.uk

And apologies for hijacking the comments column - please feel free to remove this comment and repost the info somewhere more appropriate. I just want to raise awareness, it's going to be a very close vote, every bit of help counts. Thanks very much.

Arianna Huffington and others are able to bolster their arguments against the worst of the current crop of psuedo-conservative extremists with more than enough tangible evidence and basic logic. Right-wing commentators, in far to many cases, simply resort to... well, crap like this:

I just can't take Arianna, she may even do more harm than good, and her website has really gotten to be more and more silly and biased and restrictive of any thought that exceeds that of her or her incredibly biased superscillious staff...as well as her true needful nature..it's rather sad there is something lacking in this womens life..a serious need for approval and unquenchable attention..

Wow! Alternet is now censoring my comments!

I simply pointed out, in some detail, how the left-wing press in the United States is just as reprehenisble as the right-wing press is. I used no profanity, but I did clearly point out that Huffington Post is ignoring many critical issues!

For example, I pointed to the headline at HuffPost today, which reads "Where is Al Gore" and I said that Al Gore's work focusing on climate change and global warming is probably far more important than his getting involved in some Democratic party political squabble between two rather similar candidates.

I also pointed out the major role that Alternet has played in hosting the 9/11 truth movement nonsense about bombs being placed in the world trade center, and how that really played into the hands of those who wanted to attack anti-war activists.

I also pointed out that many readers here would likely believe that the right-wing press is controlled by a network of billionaires and secretive financial interests, but that they might vigorously deny that that was the case as regards the left-wing press - but that they might want to reconsider that opinion.

I believe I also pointed out the general failure of Alternet and Huff Post to run daily video feeds from Iraq, which I certainly would do if I was the editor.

In any case, it was a long comment, and now it is gone, and I'd like it back. if the owners of the site could please email it to me at

scan4itfast@yahoo.com

I'd appreciate it. Or you can just repost it.

A. Huffington is something like a puffy female pop version of Noam Chomsky. That would be a more or less discredited icon of the "left" who refuses to discuss anything that might actually undermine the ruling class (as in a blatant and ongoing 9/11 cover-up directly responsible for "war on terror"). Ditto for Arianna Huffington and her Huffington Post site.

An elite “left” does quite a PR-propaganda job of pretending it’s got cleaner hands. However, reality says the "left" in America is every bit as dirty as the so-called "right" and generally has been. Hardly an accident.

This is a fact venues like "Alternet" deny as they purge, censor and ban most of the real issues off the table.

We need all the help we can get. Some of the people blasting her on this blog I have a feeling are part of the dumb-as-they come 28% who still think BUSHit is hot and can do no wrong. No amount of facts or truths is going to get through to them. Look at how the right slams people like Scott McClellan who was an insider and is now telling people exactly what he saw going down, and still they will slime him instead of joining the rest of us who want to put the whole Bush administration in jail where they belong.
I didn't always like Arianna, but that was because she was standing next to her husband who it turns out was homosexual but worse a rotten Republican politician. I don't fault Arianna for divorcing him and getting whatever money she got. HURRAY FOR ARIANNA AND THANK YOU!!
