Yesterday's "Broad" Is Today's Kick-Ass Woman

By Meta Wagner, PopMatters. Posted April 30, 2008.

This species of woman is endangered because, to flourish, society must appreciate a zaftig figure, hard-won lines, and unapologetic strength.

What ever happened to broads? You know, those larger-than-life women who swore like sailors, threw back shots of whiskey, sounded like they'd swallowed whole packs of cigarettes, and aged without apology.

Mae West was a pioneer broad back in the 1930s, tossing out double entendres in a saucy tone that left no mistake as to her meaning. Some of the most famous and infamous women over the next several decades followed her lead, surprising and delighting men and women alike with their in-your-face attitude, among them the actress Rosalind Russell (Auntie Mame), the Broadway "belter" Ethel Merman, the controversial playwright Lillian Hellman, the feminist leader Bella Abzug (the one with the ubiquitous hat), and the former governor of Texas Ann Richards and her pal the columnist Molly Ivins. Sadly, they are no longer with us. But their legacy remains.

It's amazing to me how the quips Mae West famously uttered still serve as quotable quotes today: "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" "When I'm good, I'm very good, but when I'm bad, I'm better." "A man in the house is worth two in the street." Now, that's a broad!

Half a century later, at the 1988 Democratic National Convention, Ann Richards delivered one of the best lines in all of American politics when she said of then-Republican presidential nominee George H. W. Bush, "Poor George. He can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth." Only a broad could pull off a line like that -- and make it seem unrehearsed and natural.

I hate the term 'bitch' (unless Tina Fey's using it), but I really like the term broad. I don't know what the official definition is in the Oxford Dictionary of Offensive and Non-Offensive Terms Describing Women, but here's what I have in mind. Today's broad:

  • Would never be caught speaking the words "that's hot."
  • Doesn't own any pairs of Manolo Blahniks.
  • Uses salty language, especially around men.
  • Developed her brain and talents and flirtiness, in part because she couldn't coast on her looks alone.
  • Doesn't watch her cholesterol or have her body mass index measured.
  • Can probably be found right now in a back room somewhere playing poker and smoking cigars with the boys.
  • Can kick your ass, and mine.
  • Is not the librarian with glasses and her hair in a bun who then tosses her glasses and shakes out her hair to lure a man. She's the librarian. Period.
  • She's not the superhero/martial arts heroine who beats the guy at his own game and then lets him "take" her. She's the one who beats the guy at his own game. Period.
  • Knows who she is, and so no one would think of asking her to be something she's not.

Does anyone today fit the definition? I can think of a few women who were once broads but have since forfeited the title. Back in the late '70s when Bette Midler was performing bawdy routines in gay bathhouses, she certainly acted the part. But a real broad doesn't sign multi-picture deals with Disney or, worse, slim down and dye her hair blonde or, even worse, straighten it.

Etta James, the great and gritty rock and blues singer, fit the bill...until she underwent gastric bypass surgery around five years ago and lost 200 pounds. Now, I know it was probably lifesaving and I'm happy for her, but a broad simply doesn't do things that are good for her health.

Roseanne once qualified, but a broad can't have multiple personalities; one alone is more than sufficient.

Rosie O'Donnell could still be one but for a serious drawback: broads don't blog, especially in haiku.

So, who's going to follow in the footsteps of the great broads? Or, are we seeing the last of a breed? I fear we may be.

Broads can only thrive under certain social conditions, and those conditions, alas, no longer exist. For this species of woman to flourish, society must have an appreciation for: a zaftig figure, not just supermodel skinniness; age and the attitude it brings, not only youthful naïveté; hard-won lines and a range of expressions on a woman's face, not a Botoxed-into-submission look; unabashed ethnicity, not homogeneity; men that can stand toe-to-toe with a strong woman, not be cowed by her; the truth, not political correctness.

It's sad to think that a certain female archetype is simply disappearing, perhaps never to return. But, maybe yesterday's broads, and the modern climate change, have given rise to a new female form: the kick-ass woman.

That would be: Helen Mirren, Christiane Amanpour, Tina Fey, Melissa Etheridge, Sarah Silverman, and not least Queen Latifah, who comes closer to the broads of yesteryear than just about anyone. Sure, kick-ass women may avoid trans fats and teeter around on ridiculously high heels at red carpet events, but they know who they are, and so no one would (or at least should) think of asking them to be something they're not. I bet they'd make Mae West proud.

"Queen Latifah, who comes closer to the broads of yesteryear than just about anyone."

She's also a spokesperson for Cover Girl, so I'm not certain I can agree with this description of her. She is on TV and in magazines representing a company that makes bank on selling an unattainable image to women.

Amen to broads.

Some of the examples here are not very good. Tina Fey? Sarah Silverman?...Rosanne? Rosie?...They're mostly wanna-bees and cartoon characters.

With the possible exception of Mae West, you're more likely to find them in everyday life than in show-business. You'll find some of them in your local diner: Instead of "Hi! My name is Susie and I'll be your waitress...m'kay?", you'll get something like: "Hurry up and order, Honey. I ain't got all day."

The New York Theater Workshop did a piece on Mae West a few years ago hinting that broad might have been transgender or a man in drag. Who knows? You find that kind of humor these days in the gay community more often than among straight women.

Broads and Heterosexuality

I find it interesting that Rosie O'Donnell and Melissa Etheridge are mentioned as a possible or one-time broads when so many of the qualifying characteristics and behaviors listed for a real broad are very heterosexually oriented. In many ways, broad - like "lady" - seems a label one can most easily wear if she is white and heterosexual - despite mention also of Queen Latifah (who some see as selling out now that she's in cahoots with Jenny Craig). While it's great that this particular image centers on qualities that seems more liberating than other images of women, it's limited and limiting. Also, it cannot be a coincidence that we see fewer "broads" during this time of anti-feminist media representations of women and conservative rants against strong feminist women.

Strikes me too that this is a very classed image. In short, the image of women as "broads" is tied to working class, heterosexual, white women - who have also achieved just enough mainstream success to permit them to transgress feminine norms without grave penalty. Want more broads? Create more freedom for women to deviate from feminine norms; cultivate an environment where women can more fully express themselves. What more and better broads? Make more than figurative room for non-hetero and non-white women to deviate from feminine norms...then make sure the mainstream embraces them.

We are stil out here- working in male dominated arenas. Doing more for womens right then NOW has done in 35 yrs. We are not 'feminists' We are "Libbers" Who don't abide by the adage that any Vagina is better then a penis- we actually believe in EQUAL Rights.
I'v egot the raspy voice from too many smokes- refuse to 'diet', won't spend money on Fake baking or plastic nails. Grew Up as atomboy and Remain "One of the guys"- Stopped doing shots because I'd pick fights with anyone who pissed me off. Even been dragged out a few bars, and broke a guys nose (and two black eyes) because he and his buddy thought i was drunk enough to take advantage of. I'm not just a Bitch- I graduated a long time ago to a "C" (I use it often - just can' type it apparently here-kicked off). so we are here- just not allowed into the mainstream consciousness anymore- we are apparently not Marketable and Profit generating enough to be recognized- But we don't give a Sh*t anyways, not here to be used as 'pin up Girls'

Is part of Hillary's problem that when she's tough, she comes across as unladylike ? If a male candidate did the same things it would be totally acceptable, but it irritates people when a woman does it.

I'll skip the smokes, brawling and the booze, but everything else sounds a lot like who and where I am now. (I can kick ass- I just don't go looking for fights.)

The voice is important- I hate, hate hate these little girl, baby-doll voices that adult females tend to use. Apparently, sounding like a small child is 'attractive'. No it isn't- it marks you as incompetent.

The most important thing about broads is that we are our own people, and have ditched the 'script' that says that we have to look, act, or be a certain way. In doing so, we are truly free.

How about anywhere BUT Hollywood?

By the author's definition, a "broad" is nothing if not unconventional. And with every Mary-Kay and Ashley wannabe going into show business, why would you expect to find a real woman in that vapid world?
In fact, what is so unconventional about hanging out in a bar, now that separate Ladies and Gents entrances have gone the way of the segregated bus?
And why is it so radical to give up on your well-being and embrace being a natural slob? Millions of people are doing just that!

Real women still abound - I'd like to think that I was one, a bit raspy from smoking too many joints I suppose, but otherwise determined to be just as provocative and unconventional in my 40's as in my 20's - hard to do that when you're a physical wreck kwim?

So I would suggest looking in the (men's) gym, going up in the mountains or out in the surf, or any of the many other unconventional places, professions and sports where real women have really gone ;)

Broad does have certain limitations in application. Kick ass works. I have been, I am, I will be and I enjoy it and I can't see why I would ever change. I like "kick ass" because I can describe women I know who are not straight and/or white and/or working class as kick ass whereas broad would not apply. I learned long ago to never take **** from anyone and to never apologize for being who I am. It does make life easier in the long run (and a lot more fun!)
P.S. Kick ass women take none of this seriously because it really doesn't matter. Have fun.

They do not make the same mistakes as we did. They are respected in many circles and CEO's of companies, broads in thier own time. Hell, Ann Coulter, as much as I hate her is a mix between a broad and a alpha kitty. More power to em. We need them all. Mae West is from an era that didn't worship at the alter of "youth," a time when women were allowed (hell, expected) to be both feminine and strong enough to trades lines with the toughest guy. Oh, and they were also expected to be intelligent, this last point being something surely missing in today's ingenues. One can imagine sharing shots AND talking shop with Mae West; with Jessica Alba, one just wants her to shut up and look pretty.

Things change.

Broad is a word I too have thought about a lot and I believe the defining characteristic is a fierce independence and ability to set one's own style. I would add to the list of broads two of the classiest ladies ever filmed; Kate Hepburn and Lauren Bacall. I love Hepburn's quote, "The perfect man should live nearby and visit often."

Also -- and I never would have thought this years ago -- the way Jane Fonda handled Stephen Colbert on his show surely demonstrates that she is blossoming very nicely into her broadhood.

With ONE exception. Weight loss surgery is not a life saver. It is extremely dangerous, some studies show 1 in 100 people die afterwards. It also has numerous side effects. Almost 50% of people regain what they have lost. The only study demonstrating it extends life is one sponsored by the weight loss industry and it is doubtful. Furthermore, no matter how hard they have tried, they have never been able to produce a study finding heavier African American women have shorter life spans than thinner ones. In fact, one study found heavier African American women lived on average a year longer than their thinner counterparts. When we hear weight loss surgery championed in the media, that is marketing, not science!

Getting back to broads, someone should start a website devoted to the art of becoming a "broad." Of course broads come in all shapes and sizes. It is an attitude!

I'm not sure about this idea that a woman has to be a chain smoker to be a broad. I think some of the celebrated women in the ecological community were pretty broadly. Judi Bari anyone? Julia Butterfly Hill? I mean, one lived in a tree for over two years with helicopters flying over her head. The other got half her body blown off and then wrote a song to complain that the FBI stole her fiddle!

How about Vandana Shiva? Or that mischievous Elf who founded Code Pink and Global Exchange?

In modern mainstream showbiz, well, Cathy Bates comes to mind. Not sure about Jennifer Hudson, time will tell. And one might make a case for Drew Barrymore.
