White Nationalists, Skinheads Flock to Cage Fighting, Mixed Martial Arts

By David Holthouse, Intelligence Report. Posted March 18, 2008.

Rapidly rising blood sport is wildly popular among racist skinheads and other young extremists with a thirst for violence.

Melvin "Man-o-war" Costa has a classic Nazi eagle and swastika insignia tattooed across his chest and a prison gang spider web inked on his right elbow.

Costa, 26, also is a convicted felon, self-avowed white nationalist and currently the 10th-ranked light heavyweight fighter in King of the Cage, one of the most popular semi-professional "mixed martial arts" (MMA) combat leagues in America. MMA is the fastest growing sport in the country. Television ratings for its preeminent league, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, routinely outdraw every other sport except NFL football among men aged 18-34.

Not surprisingly, this rapidly rising blood sport is likewise wildly popular among racist skinheads and other young extremists with a thirst for violence. Many white supremacist online forums have recently established discussion groups devoted specifically to MMA; skinhead gangs across the country are raising money by hosting illegal backyard tournaments; and retired white supremacist cage fighter Mike Buell runs a major MMA training school in Arizona whose logo is a Celtic cross (often used as a white supremacist symbol) and the phrase "Hail Victory" (the German equivalent is "sieg heil").

Costa, however, is the first openly white nationalist MMA fighter to become a Top Ten-ranked competitor in a sanctioned organization like King of the Cage, which is a proving ground for up-and-coming fighters, a select few of whom go on to fame and fortune in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

"A swastika, as far as I hold it true to my own, it stands for the purity of my people's blood," Costa told leading MMA sportswriter Sam Caplan last October. "I do believe in the purity, security, and the survival of the white race. ... When I come down that [fighter entrance] ramp and people see me, they know I'm white power." Costa did clarify, however, that he considers himself a white nationalist rather than a neo-Nazi because "[a] neo-Nazi holds Hitler's beliefs to be true down to a T. I don't. I believe in Hitler's point of view as far as racial consonance but I don't believe a lot of [his] things as far as controlling the economy."

By Costa's own account, he was frequently incarcerated for burglary and assault from the time he was 15 until his most recent release from prison in March 2006. His first King of the Cage fight occurred the following April. Costa knocked out his opponent at 1:06 into the first round.

"I don't feel pain. No fuckin' brain, no pain!" he said then. Over the next six months he reeled off three successive knockout victories. Southern California skinheads in full dress -- boots, suspenders, bomber jackets -- began showing up at King of the Cage events in droves to cheer on the Aryan warrior, whose swastika tattoo, outspoken white nationalist ideology and growing skinhead fan base presented MMA promoters with a public relations dilemma.

Last Oct. 18, shortly after Costa's comments and pictures of his tattoos were republished widely on MMA fan websites, Gary Shaw, the live events president of the parent company that owns King of the Cage, issued this statement: "I try not to allow anyone to fight in the cage or the ring that has anything inappropriate either on their gear or tattooed permanently on their body. And that means either ethnic, or racial, or anything offensive to the general public. I was unaware of the situation but I'm in the process of handling it now. Hopefully, it will never happen again."

But it did, less than two months later. Costa fought in a King of the Cage event held last Dec. 18. For the first time, though, he lost. Davis, for his part, did not return two E-mails seeking clarification on his league's regulation of fighters with "inappropriate" tattoos.

Judging by online forum discussions, Costa's growing legions of white supremacist fans seemed far less concerned with his swastika or spider web tattoos than a third tattoo, circling his navel, that boasts, "I have a small penis." The common theory is that, as one fan said, "He might be going for a bit of sarcasm, depending on the actual size of his penis, given the false stereotype about us."

Be that as it may, Costa says, "At least God blessed me with a strong jaw and a big head."

whole lot of nothing going on here. so nazis like watching a fight? wow, so do I, but i'm not exactly in line for a swastika tattoo, though i do have an incredibly tiny penis...

MMA is not going anywhere. if we are for inclusiveness, we're gonna have to give accept that these guys might put forward an athlete from time to time.

As a member of this forum, I suppose that it is my dutiful obligation to denounce the White Nationalist interest in MMA and, of course, in conjunction with some witty remark about penis size.

But I think it would be more constructive to point out that for every foolish White Liberal living in a utopian dreamland of state enforced multiculturalism that there is a White Nationalist living under no such illusions.

Just wait until they are let out of their cages. It is not a matter of if but when.

I don't know much about this guy but with a name like Costa is this guy even white?
I mean does he not realize that white power is exclusive to unhappy, white guys with small penises and girls who like being treated like breeders? The point of racist groups like these is to get rid of any of the other races. Hitler wasn't just limiting himself to the eracdication of Jews, gypsys and the mentally handicapped, if he had succeeded it would have been everyone other than so-called Arayans.
I have to add that the swastika is originally a symbol of good luck that goes back 3,000 years.

This article was a little off based, are we to assume that every black basket ball player that come from a local park in harlem is a drug dealer or criminal.

Please, if the author really watched the UFC, or even lesser events at local venues of which there are many, they'd know MMA is a sport that takes an enormous amount of training, skill, conditioning and commitment. Many athletes are top ranked college wrestlers or have excelled in other sports.

To try to condemn all athlete because a few shave their heads or wear tattoos is a bit narrow minded.

Actually it's pretty boring

I've watched bits and pieces of "X"-treme fighting, or whatever it's called, on television and for my tastes it is boring.

I mean two guys get in a ring, enclosed by chainlink fencing, throw a couple of lame, unskilled "karate" kicks until one trips up the other. When a guy hits the mat the other guy jumps atop and starts punching the downed fighter on the head. When the guy getting hit taps out, end of match. The few matches I've seen lasted, maybe, three minutes at the most.

There is no skill involved. And, overall, it's a pretty stupid excuse for a "martial art," let alone sport.

But I guess the stupdity factor is why this so-called is so telegenic.

The author of this article is definitely putting a negative spin on a wonderful sport due to the success of one racist participant. This is disrespectful of the many excellent athletes in MMA. How about a story on why this is such a popular game?

This kind of profiling of one racist participant in a particular sport, and subsequent labeling of the sport is non-sensical and an insult to real journalism. You don't discuss one person who is a member of any group, sport or occupation and make inferences about the whole group because of that one person's ideas! No matter what group you look at, there are going to be good and bad people involved and a proportion of nutcases. That shouldn't reflect on the group. And this is so elementary that readers shouldn't need to be pointing it out! This sort of "article" is the kind of thing that will undermine Alternet's credibility even among people who agree with 99% of the news covered on Alternet. Do the whole organization a favor and don't post such silly stuff. Your readers are smarter than this!

I do agree its harder to kick someone in the nuts if there so small, you then have to have a great ammount of skill to hit a smaller target. The people who watch this crap are the same children who watch w.w.f. of yesteryear remember folks?

What else can you say. This is how people are kept from uniting against an unjust system. Fascism is the system that waits in the wings for liberal democracy to collapse because of deepening capitalist crisis. As Max Horkheimer noted, "Those who don't want to talk about capitalism should also refrain from any assessment of fascism."

Stories like this, contrary to the opinions of some, need to be published.
One of the reasons this country is in such bad shape is that too many Americans have been allowed to live in their fantasy land of the imagined gated community where "Those things don't happen". Americans were warned about the problems with the economy, education, religious racial and gender bigotry, health care, mortgage crisis, media cooercion, different types of hate groups in the military, Supreme Court, etc., long before crisis mode but didn't want to listen or accept the truth.
The only way to force those, who don't want to face facts, to actually live in reality, is to keep information current, available, disseminated. and in their face.

I'm a fan of MMA. I despise racists as fearful and willfully ignorant individuals who need help. I also despise inflammatory rhetoric used as an excuse to support a very weak argument.

The argument breaks down as follows:
1. Costa is a MMA fighter.
2. Costa is a racist.
3. Therefor all MMA fighters are white supremacists and they are coming after you after they get out of their cage.

One no name racist and an equally unremarkable training camp does not a movement make. The very fact, as the author mentions, that there is the wide appeal of MMA (2nd only to football apparently) ensures that there will be a diverse fan base. Singling out these isolated examples while offering no insight or alternative seems to reject the entirety of the event and its fans. The risk is that the tens of thousands of fans might even have sympathy for these idiots now that the author has lumped them in with the rest of the fans.

What is worse bringing in this argument about small penis size simply demeans anyone on either side of the argument who would actually want to engage it rationally.

Alternet really needs to be a little more discerning when it comes to the articles they publish, especially on their front page.

All this author is doing is using white supremecists to villify the mixed martial arts. Yes there are skin heads in MMA. You could find skin heads in NASCAR, dirt biking, and just about every other extreme sport there is. I bet if you looked hard enough you'd find them in other more 'mainstream' sports as well.

All this author is trying to do is bring down the MMA with a blanket generalization of MMA = Skinheads, which isn't the case. MMA fighters hail from all over the world, and they train religiously for years perfecting thier abilities. Few people are as diciplined as they are. Stop giving them a bad rep.

An Interview with Anarchist Jeff "The Snowman" Monson of the Ultimate Fighting Championship

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I appreciate this article, and don't doubt that some white racists flock to MMA. MMA is a violent sport - no doubt about it. Many sports are often violent or have violent aspects. It also takes a lot of skill to be a MMA fighter - more skill than boxing, karate or Greco-Roman wrestling.

White supremacists who value violence and public displays of racism could find a place in MMA - but I'm sure they could find places in other sports just as well.

I've posted below a profile of Chuck "The Snowman" Monson - an elite UFC fighter who is also an anarchist. Monson achieved a higher status in the MMA world far greater than any of the bigots listed in the article.

this whole Neo-Nazi thing is a hot fashion now for so many young people. Watch out for seemingly innocent 'punks' who would love to convince you that their Skinhead looks don't mean a thing, or that a 'Boot party' is far from racist. They are ignorant and intolerant, just as all the Skinheads who came before them.

I want to thank alternet for denouncing the bloodthirsty sport of MMA, or cagefighting. It is really depressing to see how fast this sport is growing in popularity. The people who defend this "sport" saying how well trainned the fighters are, would have said the same about the Roman Gladiators who also well trainned. One day we will look back in deep shame on this. Even worse women are now entering this "sport" in even grerater numbers. It is the final descent into barbarism and savagery. How shameful and degenerate we have become as a nation. Now even the women enter the "cage".

Sports based economy

Cage fighting thrives because people are frustrated - with their lives, the government, lack of control over their environment. So people like to see someone else get hurt. Then people get desensitized to violence. It doesn't matter anymore. It becomes ok and accepted. This thing (violence, sports addictions) is a feedback loop that is increasing all the time. Sports has become a sought after career path. A society based on sports can't sustain itself and will soon fall.

There's never a lack for specimens in our society for those who thrive, relish and excel in their lust to exemplify The Best Animal possible and the highest exemplar of the Rogue Chimpanzee in an ultra-orgasmic shudder of sheer ecstasy in Destruction, merging with God and Shiva and in their Name.

Too weak to sublimate, they'd rather unleash it all directly and make money and gain fame and celebrity.

I'm more perplexed by the producers and consumers of these celebrations of the savage. Indeed, they sure do show in spades the 'pure white' animus -- not so much in a fetishized Biology as in a Psychological and Sociological vacuity. Whence do such specimens arise?

And that "sport" is pro wrestling. It's not really a sport in any competitive sense. It's allegedly an "exhibition".

From the few matches I've seen, there are no rules that I can phantom out. It's about being "big" (mostly from steroids) and loud mouthed. The winners are bullies who abuse their opponents, women, even fans.

The only saving grace is that the fighting techniques are a joke. Nobody in a real combat would ever use such silly tactics.

You want your kids watching these fake, silly contests? These guys are heros to 10 year olds? If the posters and this author had even the remotest idea regarding martial arts, they would have focused on pro wresting.

The Headline implied there were numerous Nazis in this 'blood-sport'.

First off...the article mentions nothing of anyone else except a single KoC fighter, who most likely, won't ever be brought into the UFC, and thus, never to the 'main-stage'. Knowing how much Dana White (UFC's owner) has done to change the sport into more than just a brawl, there's zero chance he'd welcome that sort of image in HIS sport (as the UFC is owned solely by him).

And second...I'm not much for KoC. Although I do enjoy UFC. These guys aren't simply colliding limbs to each-other. It could easily be said this sport is more mental than physical. A well-trained and well-practiced fighter could win in a match with a man twice his size.

And third...'man'. I challenge any of you to look up Gina Carano of Las Vegas. Women fight too.

Insipid article...

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
First of all, I'm something of an authority on MMA and actually make a living writing about it.

Despite the article's attempt to suggest the contrary, this guy is definitely not an "up and coming fighter". I'd never heard of him. I pulled his record in sanctioned MMA fights and its far from impressive. He's 4-1, but all four of his wins are against fighters with losing records. In fact the combined record of the opponents he's beaten is 1-11 meaning that only one of the four has *ever* won a match. His last fight was a 1st round submission loss to a guy named Jason Jones--a big black dude who no doubt found his skinhead opponent less than amusing. Assuming that you can crack the KOTC top 10 with a 1-4 record, it says less about this fighter than it does about the sorry level of competition in this promotion.

Basically this article takes a marginal character in a popular sport and tries to infer a "trend". This guy is no different than the many racist soccer hooligans in Europe--in other words, a parasite that has nothing to do with the "host" he infests.

If anything, MMA is *more* inclusive of minorities and foreigners than most sports. In the UFC alone we've got a veritable melting pot of champions. Light heavyweight champ Quinton Jackson is African American. Middleweight champ Anderson Silva is a Brazilian of African decent. Heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is a Brazilian of Latin ancestry. Interim welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre is French Canadian. Off the top of my head I can think of top fighters from Japan, Korea, Russia, Belarus, Croatia, Samoa as well as a number of Latino and African Americans--and that's without even thinking hard.

The sport in the US--let alone Japan-- is full of more diversity than you can shake a stick at. I can't imagine that this is very attractive to skinheads at all, particularly since all of these "inferior races" could kick their ass.

That skinheads are violent and like to fight isn't exactly breaking news. The last thing they want, however, is to fight on equal terms with "inferior" races who can kick their ass. They'd rather seek out weak victims in the street and the like. The training and discipline required of a serious fighter is also an anathema to the skinhead ethos, as I would imagine training in martial arts disciplines that originated in South America and the Orient.

Just bad journalism...whether or not you enjoy MMA is irrelevant. This article takes one individual out of the sport--and an individual of negligible relevance at that--and tries to extrapolate his racism into a bogus trend to impugn the sport as a whole.

With the exception of the small penis tattoo there isn't much difference. Only Costa is not allowed to fight.

This guy has tattoos like every other person in sports it shouldn't matter what he puts on his skin as long as he goes in and fights by the rules.

This author isn't going anywhere the way he writes. Might as well let Costa write it for he has much more to say.
