'John McSame': Meet Bush's Anti-Choice Clone

By Cristina Page, Huffington Post. Posted February 26, 2008.

A look at his record on choice shows that John McCain is more extreme than many anti-choice voters.

With detractors like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rick Santorum, Tom Delay and James Dobson, most thinking people might conclude that John McCain comes highly recommended. But just because John McCain is an enemy of some of our most cartoonish villians does not make him a friend. This is most true on reproductive health issues.

Pro-choice Americans haven't yet pegged McCain as the extreme anti-choice copy of George W. Bush he is. For close watchers of pro-choice politics though, he's John McSame.

In fact, the Straight Talk Express has skidded off the road that most Americans drive. He is more extreme than even some who consider themselves "pro-life." For example, most Americans would be stunned to learn McCain won't -- or can't -- say whether he even supports the right to use contraception. Last March, according to the New York Times, McCain fumbled through this exchange about contraception with a reporter aboard his campaign bus;

"Reporter: "Should U.S. taxpayer money go to places like Africa to fund contraception to prevent AIDS?"

Mr. McCain:

"Well I think it's a combination. The guy I really respect on this is Dr. Coburn. He believes -- and I was just reading the thing he wrote -- that you should do what you can to encourage abstinence where there is going to be sexual activity. Where that doesn't succeed, then he thinks that we should employ contraceptives as well. But I agree with him that the first priority is on abstinence. I look to people like Dr. Coburn. I'm not very wise on it."

(Mr. McCain turns to take a question on Iraq, but a moment later looks back to the reporter who asked him about AIDS.)

Mr. McCain: "I haven't thought about it. Before I give you an answer, let me think about. Let me think about it a little bit because I never got a question about it before. I don't know if I would use taxpayers' money for it [contraception]."

Q: "What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush's policy, which is just abstinence?"

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) "Ahhh. I think I support the president's policy."

Q: "So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?"

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) "You've stumped me."

Q: "I mean, I think you'd probably agree it probably does help stop it?"

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) "Are we on the Straight Talk express? I'm not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I'm sure I've taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception -- I'm sure I'm opposed to government spending on it, I'm sure I support the president's policies on it."

Q: "But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say: 'No, we're not going to distribute them,' knowing that?"

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) "Get me Coburn's thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn's paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I've never gotten into these issues before."

The Coburn that McCain has chosen as his mentor on all things reproductive is Senator Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, which is like having the Taliban head up the Office for Women's Initiatives. (Think that's an extreme comparison? Keep in mind Coburn wants the death penalty for abortion providers.)

One story about McCain mentor Coburn is particularly telling. Coburn, in recent years, led a sneaky offensive against the condom. In 1999, Coburn drafted legislation mandating that condom labels state that they cannot prevent the transmission of HPV. In 2000, at Coburn's request, the National Institutes of Health, the FDA, USAID and the CDC (the agencies responsible for condom research, condom regulation, condom-use recommendations, and HIV/AIDS and STD prevention) hosted a meeting of experts to compile and examine 138 peer-reviewed papers on the effectiveness of condoms in preventing transmission of STDs. In its report, the panel explained the difficulty in making definitive conclusions based on available studies. For one thing, there exist ethical boundaries that prevent ideal studies from being conducted. Researchers cannot ask study subjects to go have sex without a condom and come back and see what they caught. They also cannot ask those with treatable diseases, like HPV, to remain untreated, have sex with others using a condom, and see how likely transmission was.

McCain's stated position on abortion qualifies him as a death pimp.

In a 2005 interview with Chris Matthews, McCain admitted that abortion was such a hard issue to discuss that he preferred a position that didn't require him to think at all.

*******************************************

MATTHEWS: It would be OK with you if some states said that a woman couldn’t have an abortion, even if her health was in danger?

MCCAIN: I think…

MATTHEWS: Because that’s what Nebraska did in that case.

MCCAIN: My position — my position is life of the mother, obviously.

MATTHEWS: Life, but how about health?

MCCAIN: Again, it depends on — you’d have to get down into health. I think it has to be right now on the basis of life of the mother. That’s my position.

(CROSSTALK)

MATTHEWS: But even when a woman is told by her doctor…

(CROSSTALK)

MCCAIN: Rape, incest, or the life of the mother.

MATTHEWS: … that, if you deliver this baby, it’s going to do damage to you internally. It could be real damage.

MCCAIN: The life of the mother is the position that I hold. Now, I think you could have discussions about when that life is in danger, then when it isn’t, long-term effects, short term. What we worry about is that every doctor is saying — I’m talking about the pro-life position, which I hold — is every doctor is saying, — Go ahead and have an abortion because…–?

MATTHEWS: You don’t feel good.

MCCAIN: Yes. You don’t feel good.

MATTHEWS: You don’t feel good about having this baby.

:::

MCCAIN: Which is why we come down to the position life of the mother.

MATTHEWS: Right.

MCCAIN: Then you — then you don’t get into this equivocation. Look, this is — can I just add, finally, this is a tough issue.

*********************************************

That's right: McCain's stated position is that a pregnant woman who is critically ill could have to experience a major organ failure because abortion is too tough an issue for him to really think about.

John McCain -- Saving the country from the dire dangers of equivocation. A liver here and a few kidneys there is a small price to pay.

Why this rabid argument Pro Choice vs Pro Life?

The US has one of the most liberal legislation's in the world as regards to abortion. There is no upper limit where a foetus can be aborted.

I was born in Sweden, and seen by most Americans as extremely progressive, but Sweden has a very restrictive abortion policy. After 12 weeks you have to have counselling and have to have very strong reasons for doing an abortion after week 26 or so it is forbidden other than for medical reasons i.e the mothers health. Most European countries have similar abortion legislation.

As far as I can understand the Swedish type of legislation is the one that a vast majority of Americans want. They do not want to forbid abortion but they do not want to keep the unrestricted abortion right that exists today.

There are only to rabid and fundamentalist fractions that fight one another and who have totally destroyed the possibility of a sensible debate on a very difficult issue. The Pro Life religious kooks and the extremist feminist kooks in the Pro Choice camp.

I am extremely Pro Choice but with caution. n abortion after week 26, do not think so, only if the mothers life is in danger.

Unfortunately Democrats have to cater to teh kkok fraction in the Pro Choice and Republicans have to cater to the kook fraction within the Pro Life. They cannot even mention teh word moderation, common middle ground. That is unfortunately the realities of politics.

Ps. My daughter did a paper on Abortion comparing Sweden with the US in her last year in High School. She was abhorred by the consequences of Roe Vs Wade as compared to the Swedish legislation, she had no idea that it was that bad. That late term abortions meant dissecting full grown fetus/baby and piecemeal remove it. Even for a extreme Proc Choice such as myself I found it appalling. That would never happen in Sweden I can assure you. ds

I'm a vet,who w/other vets spoke out about our dissatisfaction against a flip-flopping McCain,I as a person highly respect what he went through during the same war I was in,and I liked him back when he fought Bush for the Republican candidacy in '99,but lost, what I don't like is the big change he made ,it's almost as though he was told by Bushco.that to be pres. you must follow these guidelines, thing is many, many people know what he stands for, have seen his flip/flopping ways ,my feeling is that if is elected over any other choices then it means the people of this country want another Bushco. in office and that we are hypocrates, and quite frankly deserve what we get, more hate ,more division, and people like myself looking for another place to live!

Tom Coburn as a mentor?!

I am appalled by the idea that McCain sees Coburn as a mentor on reproduction issues. Coburn is a wealthy obstetrician and extremely right wing. His family made a fortune in optical equipment, but he presents himself in campaigns as a good old country doctor. He is also a very self-righteous man and the thought of regarding him as mentor scares the life out of me. When he ran for House of Representatives, he promised to serve only three terms. So at the end of the three terms, he ran for Senator and was elected. He also wanted to continue to practice medicine while in the Senate.

Than McJerk's stance on various matters is the poll I saw today, which puts'Ol Crazy hisself a few points ahead of Obama, if the election were held today. It's almost beyond belief that THAT many people are brain dead enough to vote against their best interests AGAIN. In my opinion, it shows a nasty racist streak still alive and well in our body politic, as well as abysmal ignorance and stupidity. All we need is a close election this time around as it'll make it that much easier to falsify in favor of you-know-who. The rethugs got away with it twice, and they're certain to try it again.

If McCain and his friends are "pro-life"...

Well, that's a misnomer that I NEVER use. These creatures are NOT pro-life. If they were, there would be no child in America going to bed hungry, there would be day care and health care and everything else that is needed for children and the rest of us.

NO! These creatures are ANTI-CHOICE.

PLEASE STOP USING THE TERM "PRO-LIFE". They are NOT pro-life. When you use that term, you validate their position. PLEASE STOP USING THE TERM "PRO-LIFE"!!!

They are ANTI-CHOICE!!!

First, let me say that I am appalled by John McCain and his policies on most things including choice. But I need to correct some factual information in the article. In October, I was diagnosed with oral cancer which was caused by the HPV virus. As is well known, HPV causes 75% of all cervical cancers. What is less well known is that it also causes nearly 50% of the oral cancers. The incidence of these are three times higher than cervical cancer, and they are actually more deadly as there is no comparable test for them like the PAP smear. They usually present with no symptoms and are most often diagnosed once they metastasize to the lymph nodes in the neck, as was the case with me. By then it is Stage Three or advanced cancer. As one might imagine, I have done a lot of research on HPV because of my condition. My doctor is at Johns Hopkins where they are doing the pioneering research on HPV and oral cancer. So I feel compelled to state that the NIH is not wrong when it states that condom use cannot prevent HPV 100% of the time. This is because the virus can lodge itself in the squamous (skin) cells of the penis above where the condom ends. Furthermore, the author is flat out wrong when she states that HPV is treatable. It is not. Diseases caused by HPV are treatable. Once one has the HPV virus in their system, and 70% of all 50 years olds do have it, it cannot be eradicated. Finally, it seems obvious that most people are not going to use condoms for oral sex which is how it can get transmitted to the mouth. All this being said, while condom use cannot prevent HPV caused cancers in 100% of the cases, it is certainly better than not using a condom and should be promoted and funded in this country and around the world. In case you are wondering what can be done to actually prevent people from getting HPV in the first place, the best hope is Guardisal, the new vaccine now being used in girls 11-26 to prevent cervical cancer. It has been approved in girls because the link between HPV and cervical cancer is incontrovertible. The research into HPV and oral cancer is definitive but is newer. Researchers are looking into the use of vaccines in boys. And the FDA should hopefully approve it in 2009. The bottom line is that sexually active people need to be more informed about HPV than they currently are. All young girls should be vaccinated. And the rest of us need to make sure we do the screening protocols that are out there. Women should have regular PAP smears. Gay men and people who have anal sex should have regular anal PAP smears. As a result of doing the latter, I found I also have anal displasia which means pre-cancer. This is eminently treatable. But had I not done the screening, it could have turned to actual cancer, which is what Farrah Fawcett has. Also, for oral cancer, a vigilant dentist or dental hygienist can spot some changes in the mouth which can be further evaluated for signs of pre-cancer. There are products on the market that dentists can use which I plan to ask the experts at Johns Hopkins about. All this being said, we progressives must do everything we can to prevent the election of John McCain.

McCain is a freakin clown! 'Umm, doh, err, derr what's my position on contraception?' Are you FREAKIN KIDDING ME? This is the best the Redneck Party can come up with? And we thought King George was a retard! (he is) but McCain proves he is equally brainless. Maybe they were suckled on the same radioactive, redneck teat at Jesus Camp and got some disease in their brains. There might be another possibility but I think that one is most likley.

McCain Positioning Himself for the Repbulican Rabid Right

This is all about where McCain positions himself in the world of Repubicans on social values, liberal versus conservative. Remember, with conservatives, the litmus test on abortion is a very important topic indeed. McCain likely believes he must position himself with the conservatives. Remember, the Republican right wing is rabid, and McCain feels he cannot afford anymore disaffection. You might ask however if he has anything really to lose? But, he does indeed. McCain knows that the rabid right is blowing off steam. Prepping themselves for the rating game yet to come. When push comes to shove, come November, he knows if he plays his cards right, he can at least get some of them back, at least partly so. And, this he hopes would be enough to get the followers of the rabid right out to the polls, in an election, most of them, would otherwise be skipping.
