I Was Wrong About Bush's Popularity

By Kevin Tillman, AlterNet. Posted February 20, 2008.

It happens.

I've written in the past that there is hard-core group of George W. Bush loyalists -- about 25-30 percent of the population -- who would still view their president favorably if he walked into their home, whipped out the Executive Organ and proceeded to urinate on their children.

Apparently, I was wrong:

"Overall, 19% of Americans say that they approve of the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president, 77% disapprove, and 4% are undecided." [ht: Atrios]

Dear DNC,

Please print up a few million bumper stickers that read: 'If you liked George W. Bush, then you'll love John McCain!'

Your pal,

Joshua H

And what percentage of the population

is insane? I think the two may be eerily similar!

I also think those numbers, in reality, are much lower than 19%. I can't tell you how many Republicans I have spoken with in the past three months who absolutely HATE Bush.

He can't leave soon enough for me.

One more thing that I want Democrats to articulate. From both the Republicans and Democrats who oppose Obama, there is this repeated assertion that because he's popular, his supporters are basically completely uninformed idiots (the impression from reading the conservative speculate on the race over on the National Review today - also look out for that nasty Michelle Malkin's contemptuous but semi-appealing rant).

I think the appropriate response to this is say something about how X percentage of the Republican base believes WMD were actually found in Iraq. Yes, you kind of concede that some people are uninformed, but you also wittily bring over independents, you can contrast believing in optimism vs. believing a lie, and you highlight the central reason our public stopped supporting Iraq in the first place.

I supported John Edwards (as some of you might know) - Mr Obama was not my first choice.

I remember JFK, however, and there is no way those of you too young to have been alive back then can really understand how much he inspired this country - and the whole world. He had hundreds of thousands of people walking "50 miles with great 'vigah!'" (vigor)

Why?

For the exercise! It was a cool thing to do! People also biked 50 miles. There was the peace core and volunteers for the poor in this country. He was reshaping this country and the world with idealism and the power of his personality.

And I have other news. Before he was elected, he (JFK) wasn't exactly a liberal firebrand. Mostly he was a rich kid playboy. Some of the things he did as a Senator made liberals cringe (His work on the right wing "Un-American activities" for example)

Not since Jack and Bobby have we seen that spirit of American idealism that draws tens of thousands to Obama rallies. It has been sleeping almost 40 years - but it was always there - and it is the most powerful force in the world.

Sorry Josh, ARG polling is being questioned

Everybody is questioning the TX Dem. poll w/Obama 48 to 42 Clinton, for instance.

Now, while I would like the above poll to be true ...

As for the popularity of Pres Bush, there is always a percentage of people who support any president, no matter what (likely 15-20%). There is also the core Republicans (about 20-25%). A current Rasmussen poll shows 35%

While I personally have never approved of Pres Bush (going back to his work @ the TX Rangers & his involvement w/juicing his players), I do think a 30-35% approval rating currently is more real then the ARG number.

Obama has the momentum.

She couldn't beat McCain even if she won the nomination.

Haven't you been paying attention? 48% of the electorate can't stand her! She has always been the only candidate the Repukes had a chance to beat. Look at the crowds Obama is drawing. I smell a landslide and the longest coattails any Democrat has had in a very long time.

1.5 m children died during the sanctions regime, the Iraq Liberation Act (of 1998) ...

Pres Clinton was responsible for all of the above. Pres Bush used Clinton's signing of the Act as justification for Gulf War II.

So, who do you think I don't trust?
