Chris Dodd Wins on FISA Spying Bill

A victory against Bush's spying programs? Well, at least a delay.

A victory against Bush's spying programs? Well, at least a delay. Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd has forced the Senate to postpone a vote on a bill that would give immunity to the telecommunications industry for its assistance in helping Bush domestic spying programs.

Ryan Singel at Wired has the writeup:
Christopher Dodd's threatened filibuster of a bill giving immunity to telecoms that helped the government spy on Americans unexpectedly carried the day Monday, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid decided to postpone the vote on the measure until after the winter break.
The announcement was an unexpected victory for civil liberties groups, whose anti-immunity fortunes looked grim this morning as the Senate looked primed to pass an expansive spying bill that would free telecoms like AT&T and Verizon from privacy lawsuits.
Dodd showed his moxie and determination all day, as he held the floor for long stretches, railing against an administration-backed bill that would have freed telecoms from 40-odd lawsuits pending against them in federal court.

Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen.Jay Rockefeller is newly flush with huge infusions of cash from Verizon and AT&T executives - $23,500 from the former and $19,350 from AT&T. He has not received money from them before in all the years he has been in office.

Rockefeller is up for reelection in '08 and has promised not to use his own money, meaning he has to get it from somewhere else... It was Rockefeller who steered the committee to push for a pardon of Verizon and AT&T.

peace,
Paul

No more corporate liability (enough is enough)

Sometimes you make me see red, Mr. Frel. But in this story I remember why I still say to my friends "left of center". Corporations already have enough immunity from liability. Thanks!

So does this mean Congress will be home for the holidays while Bush makes recess appointments?

Bush was prevented from appointing more crooks and cronies over Thanksgiving due the the threat of holding Congress open in a special session for just that purpose. I have not heard any plans to do the same of the winter recess. I was hoping Dodd and his pals would end up filling that gap while they prevented Harry Reid from handing corporate crooks and their pet in the White House get out of jail free passes. Now, I am not so sure what's up with the appointments Bush wants to slip through. Does anyone have the scoop on that?

Three cheers for Dodd! Very well done. Good luck in the next round.

why "immunity to the telecommunications industry for its assistance in helping Bush domestic spying programs."
is any worse than the apparent immunity this monster of an administration and the toadies in congress enjoy?
Many years ago I worked for ATT, any governmental or law-enforcement agency seeking information on customers had to have a warrant and work through our legal department - this former necessity has been eradicated by 'our' leaders.

What repercussions would have been brought against these companies if they had refused cooperation?

I do NOT want immunity for the telecommunications industry - neither do I want immunity for 'our' government.

What Is Really Happening

Harry Reid, it appears, is a major part of the problem! In fact, I think that Reid and Pelosi are bigger problems than the Bush Crime Family -- because they call themselves, and have led us to believe that they are, Democrats. We have placed our trust in them and, as the days slip away from last Novembers' mandate for change, now find them insidiously and covertly doing more to aid these fascist than to stop them.

Washington REEKS of corruption and regardless of any excuses we MUST, starting at the top, clear both houses of our Congress -- while/if we still can!

Since the will to imprison the neoswine for their multitude of crimes is lacking, the next best thing is to stall future outrages long enough for the current "administration's" time to run out.

...isn't it front and center EVERYTIME THIS ISSUE is duscussed on-line, in the media or in news op/ed articles, that this was going on BEFORE 9/11?? The biggest defense of this immunity concept is that "it protects us from terrorists" that "everything has changes since 9/11" THIS WAS GOING ON BEFORE 9/11!!! This is really a cover-up.

Since this spying started before 911

how does the bush administration explain the attack of 911? Just what info was he using? Remember how he said he had to spy on citizens to keep us safe from terrorists? How can anyone in their right mind say bush keeps us safe? This was clearly against the law (the Patriot act kind of made this legal)so why immunity? Course in this reign of king george, everything corporations do is legal. In this administration, up is down, night is day, peace is war and on and on. The ONLY constant MONEY IS EVERYTHING!!

NO. The next best thing to do is our civil duty and that is remove them physically from office, and remove all power from them--revolution. Our founding fathers demanded it. The social contract has been broken. We are in fascism. it is here. Democracy has failed. We are constitutionally obligated to revolt and take back the government in arms if we have to. It will soon be too late. It is astonishing to note the remarkable simililarities to Hitler's rise to power. The senetors also acquiesced, rolled over, and paved the way--and all the time lamenting their cowardly natures--as if they were under a spell. many of them expressed regret but still let it happened. And how many times do we hear--never again! Rwanda. Now Sudan, Congo. Iraq--just to name the most naked incidents of genocide. Why do we always focus on the past and never the tragic events happening right now? Because these aristocrats do not care about you or anybody and never ever have? Too many people have been fooled. Remmeber patriotism is the virtue of the viscious. US standard oil supplied all the fuel for the nazi's to fuel their war machine--throughout the war. UNion bank of new york financed the nazi war machine. Who was behind it? Prescott Bush--the bush family. Bush quoted the nazis or hitler verbatim in reference to fear and control and terror and his mind-warping excuse to invade afghanistan and iraq--the same excuse with the same exact words as hitler to invade eastern europe. This is the nazi party. This is fascism--only they'ved learned from their mistakes. And now they have sophisticated technology working for them--and a significantly dumbed-down population wallowing in the opiate of consumerism. Revolution. The time is now. The hour of the knife.

Hurray for Dodd

I have followed Chris for years and this is the bravest action I have seen from him. I really hopes he stays in the senate and becomes a conscience for them. We come from those awful 60's and 70's when the government was afraid of us not the other way around.

I hope that his action and perhaps even the actions taking place in New Orleans, LA yesterday will spark a revival of the patriotism we had in the so called good old days before they started shooting students.

I am a person who saw almost 3000 people die in front of me in NYC on 9/11 and the best thing I could do was get back on the subway the next day and show the world what it means to be an American. I refuse to give up my liberty and privacy when we should really be trying to figure out why it happened and addressing it.

If you folks haven't read Imperial Hubris author Anonymous (CIA officer Michael Scheuer) yet, it is a deep look of where we are, how we got there and the real choices that must be made. This person was the man behind the real intelligence that of the people led to 9/11 and holds no punches on either side.

Another good read is Scott Ritter's book Target Iran which is a must read for anyone who is only worried about homosexuals in Iran. We are seriously missing a big world going by.
