The Dangerous Rudy Giuliani: George Bush with Brains

By Michael Tomasky, Comment Is Free. Posted November 6, 2007.

New York's former mayor is living up to his reputation as someone who will do and say anything for power.

People of Britain: congratulations are in order. You have now joined ferret owners, sidewalk artists, hot dog vendors, publicly funded attorneys for poor people, low-income community college students, museum curators, a couple of innocent black men shot dead by the police, the sections of the New York City charter governing rules of succession to the mayoralty and, of course, Hillary Clinton, as objects of Rudy Giuliani's demagoguery and wrath.

You may by now have heard the story. In a radio ad that his campaign prepared for New Hampshire voters, Giuliani tells listeners that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2000 and goes on to say: "My chance of surviving cancer - and thank God I was cured of it - in the United States: 82%. My chances of surviving prostate cancer in England: only 44% under socialized medicine."

The numbers are false. The actual five-year survival rate in Britain is 74%, which is still lower than America's, but obviously high enough for the figure not to have constituted fodder for a campaign commercial. (Even the remaining, much smaller difference, is largely explained by more widespread screening in the US, which catches many more incidents of prostate cancer that are non-lethal.)

It turned out that Giuliani's numbers were from a seven-year-old article in a conservative policy journal. The article was written by his own healthcare policy adviser, who admitted that his comparison was a "crude" interpretation of a study by a respected health policy group. The group, in turn, said the article's author had grossly misused its numbers.

That's about as red-handed as anyone in politics gets caught these days. But when asked if the campaign would continue to use the figure, a Giuliani spokeswoman said, "Yes, we will."

I know the form all too well. I covered Giuliani for a dozen years in New York (note to angry American rightwingers preparing to email me a warning to keep my foreign nose out of their business: I'm as American as a Ford F-150).

The man lies with staggering impunity. But here's the thing: he does it with such conviction and such seeming authority that people who are not inclined to study the matter will believe him -- will in fact be utterly convinced that Giuliani is speaking the gospel truth, and they will prove almost impossible to shake from this conviction.

Giuliani's hypocrisy with regard to this ad doesn't end with the fake statistics. As Joe Conason noted on www.Salon.com, Giuliani was at the time of his treatment the mayor of New York and enrolled in a nonprofit health maintenance organisation for government employees - that is, mini-socialized medicine. And as Ezra Klein noted on Comment is free, the treatment that saved Giuliani was developed in Denmark - which, as Klein drolly notes, "is both in Europe and has a universal healthcare system".

But none of this will stop Giuliani. He will say and do anything he feels he needs to say and do to get power.

Newspapers write that he was "liberal" on social issues in his mayoral days, as if his positions on abortion and immigration were matters of conviction. Nonsense. He took the positions he needed to take to be elected in an overwhelmingly Democratic city. (Although to grant him a speck of humanity, I'd guess that his pro-gay rights views were more or less genuine: anyone living in the city gets to know many gay people.)

And now he is saying and doing whatever he needs to say and do to get millions of rightwing Americans to support him. He recently told a meeting of social conservatives that his reliance on God "is at the core of who I am." As mayor he was known to attend mass almost never, he obviously cheated serially on the wife (wife No 2) he married in the Catholic church, and the only occasions on which I can remember him invoking God when he was mayor were the two times he was forced to say "so help me God" in taking the oath of office.

But forward he will charge, telling more lies with even more impunity. And immunity, because in a culture where a sense of history is largely limited to remembering certain stirring television images, he will for the most part get away with it, confident in the knowledge that the main thing most Americans will ever recall about him is the film clip of him running from the rubble of the World Trade Centre on September 11. A far smaller percentage will know that the reason he had run was because he had catastrophically decided to place his emergency command center in the tower complex - the only building in New York that had previously been the target of a major terrorist attack.

And by the way: shame on Gordon Brown for inviting him to No 10 in September. Yes, there's a long tradition of presidents and prime ministers welcoming party standard-bearers from across the pond. But Giuliani isn't yet that. Brown had no business giving him the kind of special benefit that an audience with a prime minister bestows.

Brown and all of Britain will be better off the sooner they figure this out: Giuliani is a dangerous man. George Bush with brains. Dick Cheney with better aim. Consider yourself warned.

Digg!

Why call Giuliani's socialized medicine plan “mini”? It was a socialized medicine free health-care plan. Period. The rest of us are communists if we ask for the same health plan. The man is such a phony. The problem is convincing the right-wing sheep who adore him. Giuliani is a very dark cloud on the horizon coming.

"He recently told a meeting of social conservatives that his reliance on God "is at the core of who I am?!"

Was there really anything more needed from this turd to prove that he is delusional and in need of mental treatment? What would one say if Giuliani was overheard saying that Santa Claus or the return of the Easter Bunny was at the "core" of his being?

I don't trust Rudy Giuliani as far as I could throw him! If the Republicans nominate Rudy as 'the only Republican who can beat Hillary' it will leave me disgusted enough to 'yellow dog' whoever the Democrats nominate. Ron Paul is my favorite candidate, the one whose positions on issues are the closest to mine. Who wants to vote for 'Hillary lite' when there are many better Republicans other than Giuliani to nominate? Are Republicans THAT scared of Hillary Clinton to nominate Rudy Giuliani? There wouldn't be much choice if it comes down to a race between Rudy & Hillary as both would be too expensive for my taste in Presidents.

... is the best you can do? It may well be that the Democrats would love to see Ghouliani get the nomination, in the hope that he would be trounced on election day, but that's brinkmanship of a very dangerous kidney.

The best thing to do with vermin is to eradicate it without delay. This man thrives on media exposure, and it seems he's never met a story - for or against - that he didn't like.

For goodness sake, why can't you find some decent human beings to put up as candidates?

America's Mayor?

Weird that he gets that nickname. I seem to recall that his big idea after 9/11 was to try and postpone the mayoral elections. Fortunately NYers shot that one down in a NY second.
Most of us "get it" that if we postpone our democracy due to terrorism, the terrorists "win". But Rudy likes to rule.
He is shameless.
By the bye, during his tenure The NYCLU took him to court 21 times on 1st amendment issues. Score: NYCLU 19, Rudy 2.

These guys have spent lots of years already combing dictionaries. They have captured certain WORDS, dressed them in Navy Blue Suits and planted a Flag, an Eagle or a lapel pin onto them. Such words as Freedom, Torture, Terror, and many many word, in their FULL GENERALITY have been marshalled, put in order and wielded with great force and precision in this very deep REACTIONARY effort mounted in its full effect by Reagan/Thatcher and the Boys. Giuliani is but one of these many Sorcerer's Apprentices flying around on a carefully kept Broomstick! Bring all of them down from their Lofty Generalities and pin them down to specifics. Get all these WORDS back into some kind of DECENT attire!

This article's right-on as to their dangerousness. When they say "we" and "the American People" and "Protecting All of Us", don't go carelessly assuming that you're included in who this class is talking to. Words are kinda like balloons, they can expand and contract, inflate and deflate at particular times and in particular places at will. Best to develop and sharpening the old listening and reading skills. Best to make sure you're really included in the subtle sub-texts of their campaigning.

...does she get to throw him out of the White House & live there herself? That's the precedent, you know. Hey, the taxpayers of NYC had to put up with it, and when he's America's Mayor you'll ALL have to put up with it!

I can just see him living in one of those 4-bedroom bachelor pads the congressmen like on east Capitol Hill... or maybe he'll move in with a nice gay Republican couple.

Guliani Says Anything For Power?

Perhaps the reason right-wingers don't clue in to his fabrications is that they already know he's full of it and don't care, because the same right-wingers would spout the same bull-jive if they were in his shoes. The right-wingers in certain spheres of influence would at least. I'm talking especially about the leaders of Evangelical movements who are right-wing (I qualify that just in case there are some who aren't right-wing).

The Ted Haggards of the world. It's just funny how these right-wingers are always on about morality but are the first ones to get caught diddling little kids, or with a gay lover. If they want to have a gay lover, fine. Who cares? It's just that they are so full of shit, all the time. Honestly, I don't think most of these Evangelical leaders even believe in what they preach, it's just a persona they took on as a means to power. So I don't think they will have a problem with Rudy at all, he's one of them.

I feel sorry for the meat and potatoes republicans that vote against their class interests because no one else will address them besides a bunch of cold-blooded snakes.

Rudy is even worse than Hillary with his tie in to the AIPAC gang. I think Hillary will at least think about things a little bit before flying in (like GW Bush) more white phosphorus and cluster bombs to augments Israel's supply after her next attack against Lebanon or some other countries civilian population. But, for Rudy, it's all a green light. "Take out" Iran, no problem, Rudy's formula is a formula for perpetual war. He takes his cues from AIPAC and we will never see peace between Israel and the Palestinians with him in power, because he will never, never pressure Israel in any shape or form to compromise. At least with Hillary, we have a tiny, tiny, bit of hope on this. Not much, but better than the war machine himself.

Least Qualified to be President

During the Democratic debates, it was Joe Biden who said that he couldn't think of anybody least qualified to be president than Rudy Giuliani. Biden, overall, seemed to have more knowledge, experience, and stability than anybody up there. Even the other Democratic candidates seemed impressed with him. Of course, the MSM is doing their best to ignore him. I think it is sickening that people like Giuliani, Romney, Clinton, Obama, and so forth, get so much attention when their qualifications and abilities are so questionable; and Biden who is unquestionably qualified is ignored, as is Dodd.

instead of running like the coward he is and always was, Rudy would have been just a blip on the radar of media information on that day. But we have a VERY LAZY media in this country, and Rudy was available-VERY available-for two reasons. He just LOVES media attention and sought it, seeing it as an opportunity for national public attention. He was running around looking for somewhere to GO, since it was his decision to put the command center IN the World Trade Center, after he had been advised not to.

I live 30 miles from New York City, I know what a piece of scum Rudy is. I hope the rest of the country-the mid west and uninformed assholes in the red states-do not fall for his Bushit. But then they already fell for Bushit twice, why should they bother getting informed? Thanks a lot red states-go f yourself.

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE NOW!

A sitting member of Congress is introducing a measure to impeach the vice president of the United States and the story isn't visible on Alternet. This should be the leading story on a website that bills itself as an "alternative" to the mainstream. Some alternative! More like left gatekeeper.

For those who are interested in doing something constructive about our current state of affairs, please call your representative and urge them to support Mr. Kucinich's bill. The Capitol switchboard is:

1-800-828-0498
1-800-862-5530
1-800-833-6354

Just ask the operator for your representative's office. If you don't know it, tell her/him where you live and she/he will look it up. Once transferred to your representative's office, politely tell the person who answers the phone that you urge your representative to support Kucinich's articles of impeachment against the vice president. You will probably be asked for your name and address.

I just did this. It's the first time I had ever called my representative (Rodney Frelinghuysen in NJ). It was easy and I felt better after doing it.

Rudy-complex...

Rudy Giuliani is well qualified to become the next President of the USA as he has been well vetted by AIPAC. He knows where his bread is buttered and unhesitantly bows at the altar of power and the powerful.

There is something intrinsically evil about this caricature of a human being. He reminds me of an evil dwarf, cunning and deceptive, forever on the make... a man who will do the bidding of the highest bidder.

Don't know about his brains though. I don't know much about the man but I do get the distinctive impression that the only part of his brain that he really uses is the R-complex, the reptilian inner core, the primitive part that has no emotions like love or empathy or compassion. This part of the brain houses fear, aggression, and paranoia, and is prone to outbursts of violence if unchecked.

So, if elected, the good citizens of America can expect another war or two or three brought on by inner paranoid delusions... sustained and exploited by AIPAC manipulation.

Rudy's lie about prostrate cancer are more accurate than the figures used by Michael Moore in his so called documentary. If your worried about politicians lying, what about Al Gore's fictional movie that has been proven to have at least 36 lies about global warming being caused by man or that warming even exists at all. Of course Gore couldn't talk without lying when he was running for president and he wasn't half as bad as Kerry. Kerry's whole life is a lie. Kerry's life is built upon one lie after another from the time he joined the Navy until today. But the Master liars of all time are Hill and Bill. They make lying look effortless, they lie automatically even when the truth will work they still lie. Even the column about Rudy is a leftwing lie. Bush is probably the most honest president this country has ever had, he's honest to a fault. It's this reason that so many left wing crooks are out to get him and why so many lies are told about him. Bush won't even lie to defend himself against others lies. The Democrat Party is made up of nothing but lie after lie after lie; if you keep telling the same lies over and over again soon they will be believed is the democrat party creed.

Strange Bedfellows and Their Backroom Antics
Posted by: AlexLawyer on Nov 7, 2007 6:27 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Politics does indeed make strange bedfellows. For Pat Robertson to endorse a transvestite who cohabited with a gay couple would not long ago have been unimaginable. But there have always been seismic shifts in the hated others; in the 1950s and 60s it was communists and African-Americans. By the 1970s and 80s it had become liberals, liberated women, homosexuals and those who have, perform or advocate abortion.

Now it is Muslims--ostensibly "Islamofascists", but in practice all Muslims. Right wing Jews and Christians have joined forces to support the Israeli far right and an aggressive Middle East policy. One wonders what kind of backroom deal was cut between the evangelical entrepreneur who heard the divine voice after repeatedly failing the bar examination and thereby earned such Godly favor as to be able to advise the Almighty on meteorology, as well as politicians on policy.

Most likely it involves judicial appointments, as just one more radical neocon justice would turn the STAR (Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts) Chamber into a solid, reliable 5 vote majority. Rudy surely wouldn't mind selling out his erstwhile pro-choice and pro-gay rights friends for the support of Robertson's legions, the red-state, redneck, red-ink voters who have become the party's power base.

Giuliani, the 9/11 President
Posted by: penobscotdziekuje@yahoo.com on Nov 9, 2007 3:07 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Rudy's world seems to have stood still since 9/11; now that he's running for president he is basing his campaign on fighting his own personal jihad against terrorism.
For this Reagan wannabe, it's 9/11, all the time! Imagine his speech to a group of disinterested veterans: "I want to be your president of the 9/11 States of America! We need your sons and daughters to fight. They want to kill us! They hate our way of life. Remember Pearl Harbor! No, I meant the World Trade Center! We didn't have enough troops in New York to stop this cowardly attack by the Islamic facists!
"But with quiet resolve (and lots of help from Blackwater) we will wipe them off the face of the earth! God bless America!"
He will keep us in a permanent frenzy of panic. More surveillance-if not already, more police on the streets, more quashing of civil rights and god knows what. It will not be too much fun under Giuliani's leadership. All he wants is a fight and he doesn't care who gets hurt.
