NYC Council Member Agrees To Push Investigation of Giuliani and the 9/11 Firemen Radio Debacle [VIDEO]

By Don Hazen, AlterNet. Posted November 1, 2007.

Giuliani did nothing to improve the New York City Fire Department's radio performance for seven years after the 1993 World Trade Center attack.
NYC Councilman Wants to Investigate Giuliani's Handling of 9/11

New York City Councilman Eric Gioia says he supports a call for an investigation of former Mayor Giuliani's failure to provide New York City firefighters with radios that could have saved lives on 9/11.

The facts in the case are collected in a recent short video documentary from Brave New Films (BNF) called The Real Rudy: Radios.

"I will do everything in my power to get answers, to get the truth," Councilman Gioia announced after receiving a BNF-launched petition with 20,000 names on it. "There needs to be accountability."

Giuliani did nothing to improve the New York City Fire Department's radio performance for seven years after the 1993 World Trade Center attack. The Giuliani administration then awarded Motorola with a no-bid contract for new radios that were not field tested, did not work properly and were immediately pulled from the field. As a consequence of the inability of the firefighters' antiquated radios to receive police broadcasts, firefighters in the North Tower never received an alert from an NYPD helicopter that the building was in danger of collapse, and remained in place while police officers evacuated. The building's collapse killed 121 firefighters.

Many firefighters in NYC and across the country are quite hostile to Giuliani's presidential bid, and accuse him of derelict behavior and unfair favoritism toward the police.

One FIRE battalion chief, Jim Riches, who lost his son Jim in the attack on the World Trade Center, is particularly angry about Giuliani. He has turned his mourning over the loss of his son into becoming a relentless opponent of Rudy Giuliani's campaign. With other families of 9/11 victims, Riches has vowed to torpedo Giuliani's prospects of winning the White House by attacking his greatest source of strength -- his reputation as a hero that day. "We're going to follow him around the country," said Riches. "We want all of America to know he is not the man he says he is."

The documentary and a video with Gioia's response can be viewed at http://therealrudy.org/radios. Gioia's response also appears in the video above.

Based on months of research and interviews, The Real Rudy: Radios includes testimonies from Wayne Barrett, senior editor of The Village Voice and author of "Grand Illusion: The Untold Story of Rudy Giuliani and 9/11;" Glenn Corbett, Fire Science Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice; FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Riches, who lost his son on 9/11; Retired FDNY Chief of Safety Al Santora, who also lost his son on 9/11; and several other experts and relatives of deceased firefighters. In 17 days, THE REAL RUDY: RADIOS has garnered 103,255 views, and reached YouTube's #1 most viewed News & Politics video the day after its release.

Interesting, Eric Gioia is a democrat hidden away in Queens. Not a bad guy, but tucked away like he is, he will do anything for publicity. The clash between the fire department and the police during 9-11 was interesting but no wonder some of the Fire Department comes out against him. The police are for him.. a real law and order guy. It doesn't mean much at this point.

Basically, he's the best candidate the republicans have and if nominated will be hard to beat. He's the only candidate on either side that has a legit record of accomplishments especially during a crises. He also ran one of the toughest cities in the nation successfully cleaning it up and making it a much better place to live.. One cannot argue with facts.

Giuliani is incompetent, period

This is a guy who is all about the flashy smile, the warm handshake, and not much else. He's kind of like George W. Bush in that way.

Examples of his poor planning are legion. For example, he decided to put the NYC emergency command center right in the World Trade Center (the famous building seven). Given that a group of terrorists had tried to blow up the WTC in 1993, it seems that any competent manager would have decided to put the command center in a more remote location - but Giuliani wanted it within walking distance of city hall.

Then there's Giuliani's refusal to supply ground zero workers with breathing protection supplies during the response to 9/11. THe building was constructed in the 70s, right? What was that mysterious 'mineral fireproofing" that was used on the steel girders? The actual facts are as follows:

Pollution worries experts as smoke lingers over the city, By The Michigan Daily on 9/14/01

Quote: "During the twin towers" construction in 1970 and "71, a slurry mixture of asbestos and cement was sprayed onto steel supporting trusses and beams as fireproofing material. But several unions and industrial hygienists protested, and after an airborne plume of white asbestos powder was detected as far away as Brooklyn, the City Council banned spray-on asbestos, and the federal government followed a year later. The city council"s action halted the spraying but not before almost 3,000 trusses between floors 9 and 37 had been coated with hundreds of tons of the material."

Any competent manager should have mandated breathing protection gear for everyone involved in the cleanup - but Giuliani, like most Republicans, slavishly ignores any mention of the dangers of environmental pollution, which keeps the chemical industry happy.

This fit right in with the White House agenda. See EPA Misled Public on 9/11 Pollution: "White House ordered false assurances on air quality, report says." (August 23, 2003 by the Long Island, NY Newsday)

Giuliani was so eager to present an appearance of rapid response and "leadership", and to get Wall Street back in business, that he ignored basic health and safety concerns for the workers who had to clean up the mess. It's just a case of gross incompetence - one that resulted in a lot of serious illnesses and deaths. See Ground Zero Illnesses Clouding Giuliani’s Legacy, DePalma, May 14 2007

who is all about snuffing out the little guy for big profits and crony capitalism. In other words he is the perfect Republican candidate.

Plus, he kind of looks like Max Schreck with glasses.

Giuliani is far worse than a fraud.

At this point an official 9/11 “Commission” failure and cover-up has been admitted to by no less than Kean and Hamilton. Sly Rudy “9/11” Giuliani was at the epicenter of a rancid, bloody episode of American history that does not pass the smell test and is yet to be properly investigated.

Before I’m lambasted here, I do not make the “inside job” charge some 9/11 truthers have leveled – at least not so far – but make no mistake:

9/11 is a proven cover-up yet to be accounted for.

And in case there was any doubt, a cover-up at 9/11 is a de facto crime. One with clear and present global impact.

Stand Down 911

NYC has an air defense plan.
Ask Goulianni about it.
There are Fighter Jets and Cobra Gun ships protecting New York City.
How did four planes fly around the heaviest defended airspace in the world for an hour an a half and get away with it?
The same air space that Aircraft were routinely intercepted dozens of times before?
Example, Paine Stewart’s jet was intercepted within fifteen minutes and then escorted to the Rockies where it crashed.
Allot of trouble to go thru for a golfer.
What about NYC?
What happened on 911?
Nothing!
Absolutely Nothing!
Except the biggest hoax ever perpetuated on mankind.
Coincidently a billion dollars worth of gold was being stolen at the same time.
Who thinks of this shit?
They don’t miss a trick.
Some operation!
The only reason the building was pulled early.
Was that the Fire Chief on the fire floor said that there was no fire.
NO FIRE!
The gig is up, leave the last armored car full of gold and pull the building, quick.
They even pulled the building where the operation was run from.
To aim their Laser guided bombs.
Wow!
Watch on TV as they make three buildings disappear right before your very eyes and with them your Freedom, Rights, Liberty and Country.
Before the second jet flew into the trade center it took a little detour.
Flew over Indian Point Nuclear Reactor and Stewarts Air force base, twice!
Now, where was our TRILLION DOLLAR defense system?
Out of bullets?
Stand Down 911!
Dead Eye Dick was running the show and
He shot us in the face!
You look into it.
Discount the disinformation agents that spew BU__! SH__!
What you see is what you get.
A COR-‘PIRATE’ Stupid State under Dead Eyes control.
Who will he shoot next?

Giuliani "Knew" WTC towers were going to collapse

in advance, according to his own account given to ABC news, yet never bothered to warn anyone else. He has never answered the question as to WHO informed him that these buildings would be coming down, and in fact has denied that he even made this comment! He is a liar. And he has been complicit in the 9/11 cover-up even if he wasn't complicit in the attacks. He is a fascist who supports the destruction of our Constitution.

Truth about radios, Rudy did try to update them...

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
First of all, the placement of the his command center in WTC may not have been the best place to put it, but it made sense because many of the FBI and other governmental offices were down there. It also showed NYCers that he was not going to ask others to work there after the bombing, but not himself. I agree the bunker should have been someplace that wasn't near any other building, but all of NY is a target and whatever building it was put in would have been a target. That argument could be made by people who just hate Rudy.
The thing about the radios is more complicated. I happen to know that before 9-11, Rudy did try to update the radios for the fire dept and it was met with some resistance from those in the field. There was an effort to prove the radios wouldn't work, and it's sad to say some in the fire dept pretended that they weren't working, reporting that they couldn't hear the new digital ones. It was an internal dispute within the dept about going digital and moving away from analog. I hope the investigation, if they really want to know the truth, would also investigate that part of the story.

Also, there was a system in place within the WTC that boosted the radios power. They were called "repeaters". The reason one Tower didn't get the message to evacuate was because the system was knocked out by the planes going into them. I hope that part is included in the investigation. If it isn't, we will know the entire effort was done, not to find the truth, but to attack Rudy and take him out of the running.
