Does Bush Hate Kids?

By Scott Thill, AlterNet. Posted October 17, 2007.

Bush has a socialized health plan, yet he is against offering one to low-income kids. Find out why and how you can help overturn his veto of a children's health insurance bill.
S-chip Works: Bethany's Story (non youtube version)

As people across the country are mobilizing and pressuring Congress to overturn President Bush's veto of SCHIP, the program that provides health insurance for low-income children, many are scratching their heads as to why Bush is against the program at all.

Presidents might veto legislation that is costly, ill conceived, or ineffective, but in this case, most people agree that SCHIP is a very successful program. And therein lies the problem.

"The reason that Bush is so opposed to SCHIP is the same reason he was so determined to privatize Social Security, which is that they're both programs that work," said economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman in a recent BuzzFlash interview. "You have to understand, that is the point of view of somebody who really wants to undo the New Deal -- and if possible ... get things back to the way they were before Teddy Roosevelt and the 'Socialists' came in.

"The worst thing is a government program that actually does help people," Krugman continued. "So the SCHIP is a really bad thing, from Bush's point of view, because it works so well. It might lead people to say, well, if we can do this for lower-income children, why can't we do it for lots of other people who need guaranteed health care? So it's the determination, on his part, to do this veto, even though there's a short-term political cost, because they're deathly afraid that people will look at SCHIP and say, gee, actually the government can do some good."

The battle of SCHIP is really a battle about the role of government. Despite large numbers of Americans who support government-funded programs to keep people healthy, like Medicare, Medicaid and SCHIP, Bush represents a radical anti-government position that demonstrates how a narrow number of lawmakers -- little more than a third of Congress voted against SCHIP -- are willing to deny other families the same level of quality, government-financed health care that Congress, the military, most federal agencies, and even the President himself, enjoy.

In the run up to his veto, and in the days since, Bush has continually preyed upon people's fears of socialized medicine, saying that SCHIP is a slippery slope toward universal, government-sponsored health care.

He told the Washington Post in July that his "concern is that ... you're really beginning to open up an avenue for people to switch from private insurance to the government." And Bush later hammered the point home, telling the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce that "I believe in private medicine, not the federal government running the health care system."

The White House resource site for health care describes SCHIP as "[A]n incremental step toward the Democrats' goal of a government-run health care system."

That anti-government mentality explains why so many conservatives came out swinging when Graeme Frost, a 12-year-old boy who received government-sponsored health services after barely surviving a car crash in 2004, filed a formal objection to the children's health scandal and later delivered a radio address for the Democrats, saying, "If it weren't for CHIP, I might not be here today."

Graeme spent a week in a coma and, three years later, still has a paralyzed vocal cord. His sister Gemma, who was also in the car, sustained severe brain damage.

But that didn't stop Republicans and media outlets alike from swiftboating the Frost family. Syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin, for example, accused them of being well-heeled freeloaders. When that theory turned out to be a lie, it didn't really matter. Malkin and other right-wingers simply moved their baseless smear campaign to another SCHIP recipient: Bethany Wilkerson, a two-year-old who was born with a serious heart problem. (Click the video above to learn more about Bethany and how you can help defeat Bush's SCHIP veto.)

In short, Bush rejected an expansion of a program that could have insured millions of children for five years on less than what it costs to spend another four months in Iraq. Given that Bush has only vetoed four bills in his two terms in office, never questioning outrageous earmarks on bloated spending bills, the stubborn illogic of his maneuvering is stunning.

The president who lost his soul

I don't know if boy emperor hates kids particularly, but evidently the only thing he does like is serving his corporate masters. I've sadly come to the conclusion that he is incapable of caring about anything I care about. I care about the planet and our environment. Just scratch the surface and you'll see W relaxing pollution standards (not good for kids), selling off wilderness areas to mining and logging companies, kowtowing to oil companies, the insurance industry and big pharma, and of course installing lobbyists and industry toadies to head the various environmental agencies....a criminal conflict of interest at best. I care about our children.
I care about human life. Unnecessary, counterproductive and illegitimate wars are detrimental to human life. Capital punishment nullifies human life. There are things worse than death, when such punishment is appropriate, as it all too often is.
I care about waste, fraud and abuse. For too many years this 'president' enjoyed virtually no scrutiny, oversight or checks and balances. A compliant and pliable Democratic House & Senate don't seem to much help, they act absolutely invertebrate. And the massive amounts of money being spent and wasted by this administration shows he doesn't care about the value of the dollar or national debt. What does he care? He'll just hand his mess to whoever comes next, while he and his cronies just walk back through that revolving door to lucrative positions in those industries who benefited the most from his corporate policies. It almost defies belief. Then of course there is that fiasco I call the Bush War, where we are spending over $3,300 per second every second of the year, off budget and borrowed from China. Is this guy even human? Now he vetoes help for children for 'lack of funds', and calls it a slippery slope towards socialism? His whole administration is geared toward the transfer of wealth from our treasury to his cronies pockets. No, I don't think he cares about children unless they are Ranger contributors to his campaign. Thank dog for the 22nd Ammendment!

This isn't about hating. It's about indifference.

This isn't about hating kids. They're victims because they're relatively poor, not because they're young. Their parents get no more than their children unless they qualify for Medicaid (poor) or Medicare (aged or disabled).

And I don't like the word hate in this context. Do Tyson and Perdue hate chickens? No. They're indifferent to their plight. Chickens are viewed as economic units, in this case food.

The aristocrats see the poor as labor units no different from a machine except in the obvious and unavoidable ways. They are to be worked as hard as possible as profitably as possible (i.e., exploited), which of course means subsistence wages, no unions, no benefits, no rights - no more than you would give to a farm animal or a slave - gruel, a thatched roof and hay to sleep on, minimal veter - er, medical care.

The children of the poor matter even less. Let the sick ones die. Why not? (Chilling, no?) All that is important is to prevent pandemics that wipe out the healthy childstock and choke off the next generation of slav - er, Wal-Mart associates.

Normal people call this hate because their default position toward other human beings demands better treatment than what the Republicans have in mind for the peasan- er, citizenry. Normal people think that you have to hate children to not love them. Not so. It cannot be stressed enough that the poor, which will, if the corporate masters' plan is realized in full, comprise 98% or more of us, are considered like another species to the elites. If you doubt that, you will never understand them.

How do I know? It's obvious if you look for it. The evidence is everywhere. You've got to stop projecting your human values onto these people and see them for what they are: a predatory breed of human with the morals of insects.

What else is the threatened veto of SCHIP about? Why were soldiers sent to battle understaffed and underequipped? The 800 billion spent on the war has not gone to the soldiers (the poor). It's gone to cronies (the wealthy) in contracts, not for decent soldier pay, better incentives to recruit replacements, benefits, or armor.

Why? The same reason that farm animals don't get seat belted in when transported. They just don't rate to humans. And the poor just don't rate to the aristocracy. They give our values lip service, but how many examples of them advocating those values but disregarding them themselves are you aware of? Why do you think Walter Reed looks like a crack house? Why do you think that there was no money for rescuing Katrina victims?

These insects are trying to breed and exploit us like some ants farm aphids. They don't hate us. They just don't care.

Universal Health Care - WHY NOT ?

Israel has Universal Health Care. They must use a portion of the US$3,000,000,000 annual U.S. origin aid funding to pay for it. If Bush can approve this huge annual amount to pay for Israel's Universal Health Care, why can't he approve the same program in the U.S.A. ?

Bush would understand this problem instantly if he got a private insurance policy (which he paid for) and he had to worry about finding a doctor in his plan for his colonscopy or submit a claim every time he fell off his bicycle. The guy has lived in a bubble all his life, and I find it particularly galling that we taxpayers have paid for that bubble. As we saw after Katrina, contempt for the poor is a family trait that can be traced back to his mother. Perhaps after he leaves office, he had Barbara and Laura will volunteer a while as Candy Stripers in a children's hospital.

If they are 'OUR' children, WE should pay for it. Dumping children's healthcare on the back of smokers is just more of the NIMBY thinking that hurts America in so many ways. The libs are all for it as long as it costs them nothing. Apply the same scale of taxes on their Starbucks or microbrew and they would be screaming about how unfair it is.

How many kids and their moms and grandmothers does he and Cheney and their cronies have to bomb, kill, and maim for monetary profit before EVERYONE gets it?

The man and his cronies are heartless bastard war crimnal monsters and proud of it, all the way to their accountants, stockbrokers, and banks. The world they live in, believe in, and are striving to make a reality for everyone, where everyone behaves exactly as they do or merely supports their reprehensible lives, is one where the law of the jungle prevails, and there is no accountability for anyone, anytime, ever.

They are wrong, but they will do a tremendous amount of permanent damage before they are stopped by bigger stronger monsters.

Or perhaps a REAL God who simply decides He's finally had enough of their endless brainless conscienceless sociopathic and psychopathic bullshit and lets them finally reap what they justly deserve.

I for one am proud of the president for continuing his great tradition of making absolutely sure that the wealthy in this country do not get more than they are entitled to. Better 100 poor kids should die than one little rich boy should get free health insurance when his family could have afforded to pay for it.

If by the grace of 'god' you've been lucky enough to entered through the 'Golden Crotch', Bush loves you. If you got here like the rest of us,you're a pain in the ass to him.
Their big argument is healthcare for all Americans is 'socialized healthcare'. I've had the pleasure to talk with people that live in countries that have 'socialized medicine'. Here's what they have to say to me.
'If you are sick with something that iscontagious, will kill you or meets a medical need, you get treatment. Does'nt matter if it's chicken pox or cancer. If you want breasts like Barbie or a huge talliwacker, you wait. If you need an organ transplant, you get it. If it's a facelift or some other beauty treatment, you wait'
This is a far cry from the picture this gov't paints of gov't sponsored healthcare. Because of the way this gov't has allowed big business turn the country into a 3,000 mile wide garbage dump, the creatons on Capitol Hill OWE US!!!
It's time they paid for the progress that they made us pay such a heavy toll for.

Do Dems care about kids?

Does Chimp-in-Chief's concern for kids really matter at this point?

A more germane question is, 'how committed are Democrat politicians to freeing citizens from Big Insurance's grip?'

SCHIP supporters knew Bush would veto this bill. They had nothing to lose by loading every bauble imaginable onto it.

Would they (and supporting Republicans) have been so interested in expanding SCHIP benefits as proposed, if there were a ghost of a chance of it passing?

And why insist on tapping nonrecurring, regressive tobacco taxes to fund the program, instead of more reliable (and permanent) sources?

Meanwhile, despite much righteous indignation over Bush's very predictable position, nobody in the SCHIP camp, or the media, have breathed a word about HR 676. That bill would start the ball rolling on universal health insurance coverage by expanding Medicaid, negating the need for SCHIP expenditures.

Now lawmakers must go back to the table and come up with a real plan for SCHIP. It will be interesting to see exactly how far Democrat concern for children, versus the insurance industry, extends, as that process gets underway.

...MONEY, like all Republicans. If it means depriving someone, no matter who, or how in need, or how helpless the right wingers/ conservatives will not spend money on them. They won't even allow the spending of taxpayer money on those in need. It's not their tax dollars because they do not pay their fair share of taxes; they pay little or no taxes. They believe in survival of the fitest, if your not fit you don't survive nor do you deserve to survive. That is the very essence of Darwins theory of evolution which they also do not believe in. Remember to them the earth is only six thousand yrs. old.

They hate any form of socialized health care. And this is what they call PRO-LIFE.

The right wingers and their enabling religions(Catholic, my religion; and evangelical fundies) call their attitude PRO-LIFE. Now we all know the pro-life agenda is a phony/false agenda. They only use the words pro-life to votes from right wing 'red' (red state) votes for money and political power.

I have neve, not even from the days of Ronald Reagan, believed in their pro-life, family values agenda.

The right wing religions have sold their souls to the evil empire, satan and his minions, The Repub party. And no one can stop them; and their religions just continue to support them. TOTAL HYPOCRISY... and I just can't get over the fact that my religion is not only a part of that hypocrisy but is at the very core of it and was responsible for starting it.

As the Rethug party goes so too will their religious enablers. They have such total power now but that may not last forever. Their downfall may come sooner then they think, maybe not in my short time left, but some time and maybe sooner than they think.

So much for the biggest bunch of religious phonies to have ever been given so much power over peoples lives.

Their so called pro-life agenda is nothing but a bunch of lying bullshit. They will use up every life they can for ever more money and political power.

And so will their right wing religions, who care only about dominion and domination. Are they sadistic, the Iraq/Afghanistan war for oil proves it. The Spanish Inquisition proves it. Their support of the Nazis during WWII proves it And the Holocaust proves it. And so does their newest Holocaust in the ME prove it the utter disregard for human life prove that their agenda is NOT in the least pro-life.

The title of this article is a bit misleading. I saw Bush give a speech a few weeks ago talking about this program. His main objective is that the way the democrats structured it it has grown to allow a family that earns around $80,000 per year to participate and children include those up to age 24!

" the bill re-labels "children" as anyone under 25, and "low income" as up to 400% above the poverty level, or $82,600 for a family of four."

It also seem s to be taking money from medicare - "The House bill will eliminate $50 billion in Medicare Advantage funding over the next five years and $157 billion through 2017. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the funding cutbacks will likely result in three million people losing their Advantage coverage".

I'm sure there are issues both pro and con that I have missed here but as most of these "cover all" programs have seemed to be lately, this one is a mess!

There is no excuse for children to not be covered - it's a no brainer. To include family's at that income level ($80,000) is taking away benefits from someone else that needs them.

Democrats need to stop with unrealistic programs and get something on the floor that makes sense. The republicans will never do it and nothing will go forward unless it's rational!

Another missing issues here is that you can have "insurance" and still wind up with thousands in bills that can break a family financially. THIS needs to be addressed as well. Insurance companies are pigs in this regard!

Bush is a monster. That is a given. But being a *genuinely* working poor democrat, I take extreme exception to the changes they want to make to S-CHIP. I have a totally shit job that I need to keep in order to have health insurance for me & my son because the USA can't seem to see itself clear to join the civilized world and institute universal healthcare and I now make barely too much to qualify for gov't subsidized healthcare for myself. While its great that my son can qualify for S-CHIP, he isn't the breadwinner in this situation. If I get very sick and don't have the money for medical care, I won't be able to work and my son's world will fall apart regardless of his S-CHIP status. Yet, I should rally around spending tax dollars (some of my tax dollars!) to expand a program to cover children in households that can make $80,000 per year while I'm still left out in the cold making a mere fraction of that?!!! Sweet jesus! You have got to be kidding!

All of this time, effort & arguing should be directed at getting universal healthcare for ALL Americans. Then it won't matter if the Frost's and Wilkerson's are rich or poor. It won't matter what jobs they have or for what personal reasons they have decided not to take jobs that would have provided healthcare coverage for them & their families. IT WON'T MATTER! Be a starving artist or a trust fund baby on a commune or an investment banker...it will be your choice to make to fulfill your potential as a human being. None of us would have to live in fear of having no health coverage for ourselves or our children. That is freedom folks! This new S-CHIP crap is a subterfuge and you are buying it! The politicians (both democratic & republican) are buying time so they won't be forced by us to confront & implement universal health coverage during our lifetime.

We have been thrown a bone by our political masters. Don't let each other down by forgetting what real change can be!

By constantly “blaming Bush” you socialists (liberals, progressives, leftists, whatever your name-of-the-decade is) are – like the German apologist with Hitler - fixated on a single person instead placing blame on the real culprits, which are the mean hate-filled dumb-ass white American peasants that keep voting fascists; specifically with the hope that the Republicans will help them “get even” with “those people”. Now, I understand that socialists are delusional about human nature. But, until you guys can admit that 50% of your peasants are fascist, you will be forever lost in the delusional world of “socialist peasant goodness”. The REAL peasants – meaning, naturally mean dumb-ass humans, the majority of the population - who are, btw, the same people you fantasize as peace-loving organic unionists, if ONLY they’d vote socialist instead of fascist - these mean bastards don’t WANT to help “the poor little baby children” because they know, in their hearts, that this leads to helping “those people”. AND, in case you are too delusional to admit it, the dumb-ass mean hate-filled white peasants in this country would rather cut-off-their-noses-to-spite-their-faces when it comes to ANYTHING related to government welfare, because welfare is FOR “those people”. These dumb-asses can’t even comprehend a purpose of government anymore, other than “getting even with those people”. So, Bush is doing exactly what he was ELECTED TO DO, BY 50% of the POPULAR VOTE; meaning HALF the people on freeways, HALF the people in grocery-store, and HALF the people at work.

Like your future president (of the upper-class) said “it takes a village to raise a child”. Well, “it takes a village to sacrifice other people’s kids too”.

So, it AIN’T JUST Bush. The Germans loved Hitler, the mean dumb-ass white American peasants love their own fascists dicks too. However, if you’d LISTEN to these dumb-ass peasants instead of preaching at them (and to yourselves), you might learn how to defeat them. Debate is for a small, small, SMALL percentage of the population. You don’t defeat the enemy by convincing them, as most human brains can’t change their beliefs.

About the presidents concerns on SCHIP

My understanding is that the president is concerned with making the income ceiling too high on this benefit. My understanding is that a family can make up to the low $80's and qualify. So, our tax money would be used to subsidize this benefit. Frankly, I don't feel I can afford to subsidize people who I don't regard as poor by that income standard. There are other issues of concern also. One I believe was the age of the 'children' covered would be 21.

He hates everybody, old, poor, disabled..we've been paying for this war. If a kid can hold an M16, he's useful, send him to Iraq...otherwise he starves to death and gets no housing medical or education.

And All You Rich People Shooting Your Mouths Off About Medicare/Medicaid

News Flash, It's been cut to the bone to fund this God Damn war! They haven't a clue of the cuts to come yet until your aged parents/or disabled child informs you (if they're not too afraid to tell you) they can no longer have a medication, procedure, operation they need. GROW THE HELL UP! IT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW! You rich right winged bastards are as bad as those fuckers in Washington. You know absolutely nothing about real life, and don't give a damn too know it either. You don't love because you are incapable of loving. When you parents need you, are you going to sell you multimillion dollar homes, quit your fancy jobs and stay home to pay for all their medical needs and care? Are you really going to give up all that material wealth? And don't forget, you will still be providing healthcare, living expenses and more for your own children. Now just where in the hell do you think all that money is going to come from, morons?

Every day war spending bills includes Medicaid and Medicare cuts..DEEP ones! Necessities are no longer covered. We are oaying for this damn war and for all the greed you assholes inflict on the entire world. DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!
AND FUCKING STINKING UP AND DIRTING OUR PLANET!

Fundamentalists Are Not Biologically Capable of Compassion

The SCHIP vote not to override the BUSH veto on children's health, to me, begs the question about the capability of fundamentalists or some other conservatives to exhibit and exercise the potential trait of human compassion.

As a physician I have been recently reading the work of John Jost from NYU. While John Jost would not totally agree with my argument, I urge you to look at his extremely stimulating publications.

My contention is that early rigid childhood "neuro-tapes" are laid down before the age of 5 or so and may be immutable? For that premise I will assuredly be called a bigot. So be it.

In religious fundamentalist homes these tapes are extremely rigid and actually preclude open-mindedness, tolerance for others views, and-most ironic of all, true compassion in my opinion.

My hope is that you read the work of David Boulton who may very well give us hope for the future of our species in crises.

David Boulton's proposal for worldwide healthy early childhood education may very well be our best last hope. I would add early healthy education and literacy MUST include a large component of arts education.

when is it going to End

When is it going to End? I just don't get it, and am so angry that I can't think. Clinton got impeached for something that no man can turn down, yet they wanted to string him up by his balls and label him a sadist. Now we have a president, Adolph Bush, killing americans for the sake of oil, and stepping on our children like they are nothing more than dirt, HOW MANY OF YOU SAW THIS COMING IN 2004? I certainly did, and I can't say what I truly want to do to this creep for fear of the secret service, now I may be poor, an outcast or rebel if you will, but I have this thing that most people in Iowa don't have, FREE THOUGHT and mark my words, after seeing our liberties being trampled on by this piece of dirt, it is just going to pave the way for more sick, greedy, retards in our beloved presidential office, Thanks a lot you piece of trash your greed just marked the beginning of the end for freedom, and america
