I didn't need any more reasons to be against this war, but if this is true, then my soul is bleeding tears. Planting something on the ground only to shoot whoever picks it up?!? Bush has destroyed Iraq to the point that anyone coming across anthing on the ground that seems like it could be used would scavenge it. To shoot them using such a tactic, we declare war on the entire populace, are we at war with every single person there, or to "help" them? Our nation is losing its soul. God help us all.

A friend of mine served as a paratrooper in Kosovo a few years ago, in the spanish contingent of the NATO there. He told us how he was almost blown in pieces when he tried to pick a Russian army knife he found in mint condition on a roadside. His sergeant stopped him just in time and showed him how it was a booby trapped with a grenade ready to kill or maim anyone who lifted the knife.

The russians were in Kosovo to "help their slavic brothers against muslim albano-kosovars and occidental aggresion". For them, all albanians were suspects so they did these kind of things because, after all, why would a civilian want a military knife or any other kind of military apparel if not to become a combatant? And if it was a NATO soldier, all the better, since the albano-kosovars would be blamed anyway.

If I saw something potentially dangerous to a child lying around, I'd certainly pick it up. An Iraqi inclined to do likewise now risks death at the hands of some trigger-happy teenager with a sniper rifle and a t-shirt that says, "Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out".

This is what happens when psychopaths are given complete authority over the military. I hope that the Christian right-wing Nazi's are happy about what is happening in Iraq, because they elected this group of 'people' and they will not be experiencing much happiness spending eternity in Hell for supporting them. The damage that the Bush White House has done to the country of Iraq will be palpable a century and a half from now. Anyone who still believes that our current civilian leaders are not the most blatant war criminals since Adolf Hitler has either been watching too much FOX Noise or they have overdosed on near-lethal levels of Stupid Pills.

Call it a hunch, but I have this sneaky suspicion that setting up civilians - non-combatants - to be murdered in this manner has got to be in flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions. This little hypotesis of mine is not so much the result of exhaustive investigation into the subject on my part. It's merely what is referred to as a "no-brainer".

Oh, and by the way - speaking of no brains, George W. Bush still has one year, three months, three weeks and three days until (let's only hope) he leaves the White House. Is there anyone out there who still think that sending this murderous little thug to Washington was a good idea? Any one? Anyone???

This story does not have a shred of truth in it. Nobody in the US Military does anything like this. They go out of their way to protect innocent civilians. Terrorists use these civilians as human shields and then US forces disengage. Wanting something so bad as this to be real doesn't mean it is.

If accurate, this is perhaps one of the best examples of a post combat policy failure -- using soldiers as policemen.

We should have engaged the UN right from the beginning. As much as other countries were against the war, they would have tried to help with the rebuilding, I think. Our administration is so arrogant. How they can live with themselves is beyond me. It's a good thing I don't believe in good and evil, because if I did, I'd be convinced Satan's spawn was running the White House.

Two things will be necessary to stop this country from continuing to wage wars like Iraq:

1. The culture of the country must change – i.e., enough people must be become convinced war is a bad idea except in the most extreme circumstances, (e.g., the Iranians have landed at Annapolis and are marching on DC) – that no politician left or right will even consider advocating or implementing a pro-interventionist-imperialist policy.

2. The left must realize that a large, highly interventionist government at home is necessarily a government that will want to suppress civil liberties here and try to establish an empire to run abroad – when in human history has that not been the case? The two go hand in hand – it happened with ancient China, Egypt, Rome, and more recently Britain, France, Spain, Russia, Germany, etc. If the government isn’t too big, and doesn’t have too many resources, it’s not going to be undertaking multi-billion-dollar foreign military adventures. Seems simple enough, but not enough folks get it.

It should be noted that Emerson, Thoreau, Douglass and other 19th century Americans whose mantle today’s left-interventionists claim were in fact classical liberals/libertarians. Thoreau once wrote that “The government which governs best, governs not at all,” upping the ante on Jefferson. They were opposed to the expansionism that led to the Mexican War (a war instigated by the slave-owning South), were vehemently abolitionist, favored low taxes, were small r republicans rather than majoritarian small d democrats, etc. They understood the link between large government, suppression of civil liberties and imperialist wars, a link we seem to have completely forgotten about. Thoreau famously went to jail for refusing to pay a tax that would have supported the Mexican War and scolded Emerson from his jail cell for not being imprisoned with him.

Looking at the photo at the beginning of this article, I couldn't help but see the similarities of Don Adams in Get Smart and George Warmonger Bush.
