Sen. Larry Craig Refuses to Resign

The Idaho press secretary to Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) says the senator plans to return to work to continue "business as usual" next week after the Senate's recess.

"Despite reports today quoting anonymous 'GOP sources" that embattled Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho., will resign Friday, his aide says the Senator will return to Washington, D.C. next week to continue his work as best he can, Craig's Idaho press secretary tells ABC News," ABC News' Ronna Waldman reports.

"If that plan changes, the media will be notified, the aide said."

ABC News did not identify who the press secretary was. Nor did they include any direct quotations.

CNN reported live on air at 9:02 am ET that Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) was expected to resign after an escapade involving the solicitation of an undercover police officer in a Minneapolis bathroom.

"Several well-placed GOP sources in Washington and Idaho say embattled Republican Sen. Larry Craig is likely to resign soon, possibly as early as Friday," CNN said.

"A GOP source with knowledge of the situation told CNN's Dana Bash that the Republican National Committee was poised to take the extraordinary step of calling on Craig to resign."

Fox News followed up moments later by saying the senator would resign today.

"Craig is expected to resign but if he doesn't the Republican party is prepared to act against him," a Fox reporter said. The "GOP has prepared a statement calling on him to resign but they are holding it. They say that if he doesn't resign they will not support his campaign and will actively recruit and campaign against him. They are sending him many signals that he does not have a choice but to resign."

Party leaders were going to issue a statement calling on Craig to resign, but held back. Craig is suspected to have told them he would do it himself.

Senate insiders are being tight-lipped about details, the network said.

UPDATE: RNC Drafts Statement Calling on Craig to Resign

WASHINGTON — Idaho Sen. Larry Craig is considering resigning, Republican officials said Friday, after days of public and private pressure stemming from his arrest in June in a police undercover operation at an airport men's room.

Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct on Aug. 1, and while he has since said he did nothing wrong, the episode has roiled the Republican party and produced numerous calls for him to step down.
