Dick Cheney Really Is That Bad

Rove is a domestic political marauder, the personification of a conservative movement which lacks a moral compass and has a complete disregard for facts. The master of exploiting mainstream America's predilection for news-as-entertainment, under which the likes of Rupert Murdoch can manufacture headlines out of thin air, Rove helped turn "fair and balanced" into a national joke which everyone laughs at but few actually comprehend.
Rove served as the maestro of a political-smear orchestra composed of such intellectually challenged muckrakers as Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, manipulating the NASCAR/professional wrestling crowd's addiction to seedy gossip in an effort to maintain the all-important 51 percent majority needed to win elections.
Perhaps if the Democratic Party had possessed a semblance of organization and cohesion (not to mention a post-Clinton message that could be sold to a majority of America), then Rove would be but a footnote in history, known simply as the man who helped the worst governor in the history of Texas get elected. Even the self-destructive campaign run by Al Gore in 2000, in which he distanced himself from a sitting president who, despite all of his faults, would have defeated Bush in a landslide if the Constitution permitted a third term, was enough to deny Rove his beloved 51 percent -- it was Gore, not Bush, who won the majority of votes in that contest. It took a Republican governor of Florida, backed by a compliant Supreme Court, to put George W. Bush into the White House, not any genius on the part of Rove.
"Bush's Brain" may claim that it was his careful manipulation of fiction over fact that carried the 2004 election, in which the term "Swift-boating" became synonymous with political character assassination, but it was the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the war in Iraq which sank the Democratic Party and its candidate for president, John Kerry.
It is very difficult to unseat a president in a time of war, especially when so many Democrats voted in favor of the concept, first by buying into every post-9/11 policy put forward by the Bush administration (find me one Democrat who actually read the Patriot Act in its entirety before it was voted into law) and second by rubber-stamping the lies that led to Bush's decision to invade Iraq in March 2003. Remember, it was Kerry's inarticulate defense of his decision to vote in favor of granting war powers to the president that sank his election hopes, not his Vietnam War record.
Certainly, Karl Rove played a significant behind-the-scenes role in supporting Bush's war policies. The perjury trial of "Scooter" Libby forced the collective of deaf, dumb and blind pseudo-journalists who populate what is known as the mainstream media in America to recognize how pathetically duplicitous and petty the Bush administration could get when it came to defending the policies propping up the so-called Global War on Terror and the awful tragedy of Iraq. Rove's fingerprints were all over the decision by Vice President Dick Cheney to leak CIA officer Valerie Plame's name to the media in an effort to thwart the truth-telling of her husband, former Ambassador Joe Wilson.
But that is about as deep as Rove's involvement in the two issues that will define the presidency of George W. Bush gets. While Rove might be the "genius" behind the kind of winner-takes-all dirty politics that won the Republicans a majority in Texas (and brought down the likes of Tom "The Hammer" DeLay), he was way out of his depth when it came to the reality of national security policy. Unlike unsubstantiated rumors of wrongdoing which can stain a political opponent's record for the brief moment needed to gain political advantage, regardless of what the actual truth is, the never-ending flow of dead American service members from a war based on a foundation of lies cannot be overlooked indefinitely, even by the most subservient of media outlets.
Try as Rove and his political operatives might, one cannot forever suppress the images of flag-draped caskets, row upon row of white grave markers sprouting up in cemeteries across America, or the thousands of wounded veterans left to rot in hospitals, forgotten by an administration that, with few exceptions, never knew war and used the military as an electioneering prop. Eventually, those patriotic Americans who were fooled into believing there was actually some coherent planning behind the global conflict Bush had dispatched their youths to fight and die in were bound to get wise. Rove never had the depth needed to navigate such serious waters.
Being the Brain of the most vapid, intellectually shallow president ever creates an apt epitaph for Rove's tenure at the White House. The Bush administration has never won accolades for its substance. Its best frontman, Colin Powell, self-destructed in front of the U.N. Security Council in February 2003. Powell's nemesis, Donald Rumsfeld, followed suit shortly thereafter, unable to coherently explain where Saddam Hussein had hidden all those WMD we went to war for, and ultimately telling the average foot soldier to pound sand when it came to the lack of adequate equipment needed to fight and survive in occupied Iraq.
Bush's singular appeal has been the impression of steadfastness in the eye of the storm, even if the storm is for the most part self-created. For this we must look not to "Bush's Brain," but instead peer deep into the dark recesses of the White House, where we can glimpse the awful "soul" of the president -- Dick Cheney.
The vice president is the single greatest threat to American and international security in the world today. Not Osama Bin Laden. Not the ghost of Saddam Hussein. Not Ahmadinejad or Kim Jung Il. Not al-Qaida, the Taliban, or Jose Padilla himself. Not even George W. Bush can lay claim to this title. It is Dick Cheney's alone. Operating in a never-never land of constitutional ambiguity which exists between the office of the president and the Congress of the United States, Cheney's office has made its impact felt on the policies of the United States of America as had no vice president's office before him. Granted unprecedented oversight over national security and foreign policy by executive order in early 2001, many months prior to the terror attacks of 9/11, Cheney has single-handedly steered America away from being a nation among nations (albeit superior), operating (roughly) in accordance with the rule of law, and toward its present manifestation as the new Rome, a decadent imperial power bent on global domination whatever the cost.
The absolute worst of the rot that has infected America because of the policies and actions of the Bush administration has originated from the office of the vice president. The nonsensical response to the terror attacks of 9/11, seeking a "global war" versus defending the rule of law at home and abroad, taking the lead in spreading the lies that got us involved in Iraq, legitimizing torture as a tool of American jurisprudence, advocating for warrantless wiretappings of U.S.-based communications (regardless of what the Fourth Amendment says against illegal search and seizure), and pushing for an expansion of America's global conflict into Iran--all can be traced back to the person of Cheney as the point of origin.
America today is very much engaged in a life-or-death struggle against the forces of evil. The enemy resides not abroad, however, but at home, vested in the highest offices of the land. Neither Osama Bin Laden nor Saddam Hussein threatened the life blood of the United States--the Constitution--to the extent that Cheney has. Not Hitler, Stalin, Mao or Ho Chi Minh. Not since the American Civil War has there been a constitutional crisis of the magnitude that exists today, threatening to rip the very fabric of American society apart at the seams, courtesy of Dick Cheney.
That Congress today remains relatively mute on this crisis is one of the great mysteries of our time. Perhaps the vagaries of national politics can be blamed. The Democratic majority in Congress appears to have ceded its leadership role to unelected presidential candidates who seem solely empowered to comment on current events, domestic or foreign, and who, out of fear of any misstep which could hurt their chances to seize the White House as their own, refuse to actually take a substantive stand against the policies of the Bush administration. In an effort that is curiously Rovian in the quest for electoral victory, the Democratic candidates (with a few notable exceptions) have been less than bold in their opposition to the heinous policies that are currently in place concerning Iraq, Iran, the war on terror, torture and constitutional violations--unless you count empty rhetoric.
In many ways, the leading Democrats, both those running for office and those currently holding office, are a far greater insult to American values than the conservative standard-bearers for the policies of Cheney. No one of substance takes seriously the manic ranting of the Hannity/Limbaugh/Coulter triad. These Democrats, on the other hand, have mastered the art of compromise to the point that they stand for nothing at all--this at a time in American history when the policies of the administration, derived from the dark abyss of Bush's soul, Cheney, provide the most concrete example of what we as Americans should be standing against.
The Democrats need to stand for something. Cheney has provided the sort of political ammunition that would enable them to fight, and win, a constitutional battle over the heart of America, the kind of defining struggle which I believe the vast majority of Americans would rally around. Unless the Democrats start separating themselves from the policies of the Bush administration, and take an active role in outing and suppressing the true evil that is Dick Cheney, all they will achieve in the coming years is a change in the titular political orientation of America, without the kind of deep-seated break from the failures and crimes of the past six-plus years that have taken our nation, and the world, right up to the edge of chaos.
"Bush's Brain" may be gone, but his "Soul" lives on. It is high time all of America put Dick Cheney fully in the spotlight of collective accountability, purging our nation of this scourge which has harmed us in so many ways. If there is any case for impeachment to be made against any member of the Bush administration today, it can be made against a vice president who has shamed our nation, destroyed our moral standing and broken our laws.

The vice president of the USA is a sick and dying man. Now just hear me out, people! If Bill Frist can diagnose Terri Schiavo's condition from his senate seat in Washington DC, then Tom Degan can diagnose Dick Cheney's condition from his apartment in Goshen, NY - Cut me some slack, Jack! And besides I'm totally qualified to make such a diagnosis: Two of my brothers-in-law are doctors and I once dated a nurse, thank you very much!
It is my expert opinion that Cheney will be the first vice-president since Garrett Hobart
(William McKinley's VP) to die in office. Believe me it gives me neither joy nor smug satisfaction to tell you this. The man is, after all, a human being....I think....But we have to look at the situation realistically and rationally: Cheney suffered several heart attacks in the 1970s when he was only in his thirties. It is widely believed that he suffered another one in 2000 while the election results were being faught out between Bush and Gore. The man is in his mid sixties. While this disgusting administration is imploding at all points, just think of the stress the hideous old bastard must be under. It's not a mere possibility, it's almost assured:
Dick Cheney is going to drop dead any day now.
That being the case, the Dems should have their impeachment plans in their top drawers, ready to be implimented at a moment's notice.

Dick Cheney is the worst of the worst. He's a traitor to America and a serious threat to human decency everywhere, world peace, and world stability.
However, oddly, the article had next to nothing to do with Dick Cheney.

The perpetrators should be immediately arrested and detained, possibly subjected to the systems of rendition they have established for the punishment of dissidents presently.
The assumption of power by default may yet fall on the shoulders of the people of America, as all politicians are revealed to be involved in this subversion of the Republic and it's laws, or remain complicit by acquiescance, silence or worse.
It is all too apparent the manipulation of votes via electronic wizardry, ballot stuffing, re-districting of voters, outright chicanery, bribes and special deals pouring through the Congressmen's fingers as "Earmarks" are equally treasonous acts, contrary to the will of the people and designed to remove Justice, Representation and destroy the political, economic and health futures of the Nation.
All of this shows the futility of any electoral process as being deemed honest, as our elected representatives support an orgy of money-making schemes, abdicate their resposibilities and lead us further into an illegal war, contemplate yet more horrors, and eliminate our freedoms by the stroke of a pen or less.
A national referendum and vote on the legality, implimentation and continuance of the present leaderships is desired and warranted.
Legal types might well re-examine the Constitution for the actual powers of the people when faced with wholesale Treason or Coercion through violent means to subjegate, investigate and intimidate it's own people to suppress or destroy freedoms written as the Law of the Land, sworn to and declared to be upheld by the very people now working to eliminate our sovereignty, freedoms and liberty.
Who will call them to accountability, and how?

I think it is very much still worth listening to his pre-war talks where he explained, repeatedly and in great detail, why no giant stockpiles of WMDs were going to be found. For example, when Colin Powell asserted that tons of VX nerve gas were in Iraq, if you knew anything about VX nerve gas (how did Powell's circle not know?) you'd know that it has a shelf-life of about 2 weeks. And that's under ideal storage conditions- something that the Iraqis never even achieved.
The talk he gave with Rahul Mahajan is excellent if you want to understand the never-existent "reconstruction".
Incidentally, I am surprised and respectfully disagree with Scott when he says that HR 333, the impeachment of Dick Cheney should not be a priority for the anti-war movement. I don't know how else to shut this administration down, other that the Democrat's "strategy" of waiting until the next election, 15 months from now. Personally, I think that pushing to impeach Gonzales might get the ball rolling on investigations which result in actual accountability.
You should read Scott's book!

What's Hillary's position on the "Unitary Executive theory"? On torture? Rendition? Habeus Corpus?
Or Bidens', Richardsons', Edwards' or Obamas' positions for that matter?
No mainstream democrat is willing to speak up loud and clear in oppostion to these degredations of our way of life.
Where is the collective outrage?

Martial law will be declared at some point before the next election anyway, but impeaching Georges "soul" will hasten it dramatically. The democrats are walking on egg shells trying to get through the next few months, too bad they can't see the land mines so ably planted. They're damned if they do, they're just as damned if they don't.
The George has never signed a statement that he doesn't intend to use at some point in time, and the Dick will tell him when, where, and how. There is a price to be paid when you dance with the devil. I hope America's dancing shoes are tied well.

I'm appalled by the lumping of the right leaning listenership as "the NASCAR/professional wrestling crowd". I love reading the articles on Alternet, but the somewhat self-aggrandizing tone of this one is certainly proof that Alternet is not an exception to the muckraking rule.
Why take the time to point out:
"The master of exploiting mainstream America's predilection for news-as-entertainment...helped turn 'fair and balanced' into a national joke..."
when it's clear that the integrity of this article leans a little too heavily on stereotyping and angst? I'd hate to see Alternet writers added to the list of Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter...

While the rest of us are trying to adapt our fairly flexible system and to fix what’s broke, Cheney has gotten a stranglehold on all the government machinery within reach and is throttling the bejeezus out of it. His guidinig mantra is "Leave nothing that works" so there are no real or rhetorical obstacles to rebuilding America as his own princess palace (exhibit A is the unfathomable threat to veto SCHIP because it might demonstrate the viability of socialized medicine). And in typical laissez faire fashion, he enlists the business ethic (an oxymoron) so that the backs of everyone else in the country are available for him and his cronies to climb over on their way to heaven. In their conflicted dual role as America’s protectors and the steely-eyed purveyors of fear, Cheney and his boy-President have gotten us to willingly sacrifice our freedoms for the good of his order.
His (and Rove’s) strategy has been to weaken and destroy essential institutions within our system of checks and balances that have inhibited America’s movement along their secret path back to the Gilded Age. Who would have ever thought that our Vice President, let alone President, would side with those that “hate our freedoms.” It’s so preposterous that while the Democrats are left trying to catch their collective breath, Cheney has chain-sawed his way through the New Deal, the justice system, the economy, most of the world’s goodwill, and our own Constitution. All the time standing innocently aside saying, “Who, me? I’m four-square behind a strong America!” Well, who isn’t? We just haven’t figured out that the barbarian is not only at the gate, he’s about to close it on us while we are out running around the world looking for barbarians. Treason is a good word for what this evil man practices. Impeachment is the remedy.

The forces of nature have given power to Bush and Cheney because the majority of human beings need them. It could not have happened otherwise. I knew even before the Dems won in Nov 06 that it would hardly make any difference. The world will not change unless you change.
Put your energy into something that you feel good about. If it really makes you feel good to criticize, then go ahead and keep doing it. But if not, then stop it. Take care of your family and your neighbours and your community. Forgive those you call 'evil'. Show the leadership that you find missing in the world. Don't be preoccupied with what is wrong. See the world for what it is, and do something about it rather than feeling powerless and angry. Take care of those who are around you and who you are in a position to help. Enjoy the ride :-)

1969-1974 - goes to work for Donald Rumsfeld at the Office of Economic Opportunity.
1981-1987 - chairman of Republican party (was elected Wyoming senator in 1978)

Recall, this is the guy who was supported by the CIA and the Pakistani ISI for years in the Soviet-Afghani conflict).
1992-2000 - Works for Halliburton.
2001-Present - Oversees 911 disaster. Delivers billions in no-bid contracts to Halliburton while still receiving payments from Halliburton. Pressures CIA to falsify evidence on Iraqi WMDs, then turns to the Iraqi National Council for fake 'intelligence reports'.
Aug 26 2002: Cheney tells an audience of veterans "There’s no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction [and that he will use them] against our friends, against our allies and against us."
March 2002: Cheney declares "we believe that he [Saddam Hussein] has in fact reconstituted nuclear weapons."
MARCH 5 2003: Army Corps of Engineers writes in an e-mail that a contract for restoring Iraqi oil fields is being coordinated with Cheney’s office. Three days later a Halliburton subsidiary was awarded the $7 billion contract.
DECEMBER 15 2003: U.S. Supreme Court agrees to hear Cheney appeal a lower court order that Cheney turn over documents related to the Bush administration’s Energy Task Force. Cheney had been fighting efforts to disclose the documents for three years
JANUARY 2004: Dick Cheney goes duck hunting with US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
APRIL 15 2005: Cheney releases his tax returns. His filings show that he earned $194,852 in deferred compensation from Halliburton in 2004.
He also has millions invested in Halliburton that dwarf his compensation

Now we all know Senate and Congress have backed this corrupt administration to the hilt. They are not about to do jack squat.
Cheney needs to be thrown out of office and put in prison.
We need to get our troops home immediately and let them heal from this terrible, illegal war.

""That Congress today remains relatively mute on this crisis is one of the great mysteries of our time. Perhaps the vagaries of national politics can be blamed.""
And the aquiescence of many at Rome in the death of that Republic remains a mystery even today. The Roman Senate failed to protect its own rights and liberties in the run-up to empire and the run-down of the Roman Republic. Congress is failing us in much the same way the Roman Senate failed Rome. Its horrific to watch. A total disgrace.

According to Wikipedia, psychopathy is currently defined.... as a
condition characterized by lack of empathy or conscience, and
poor impulse control or manipulative behaviors. The term is
often used interchangeably with sociopathy and antisocial
personality disorder......It is correlated with dissocial personality
disorder......Only a minority of diagnosable psychopaths are
violent offenders.... The manipulative skills of some of the others
are valued for providing audacious leadership. Some have argued
that psychopathy is adaptive in a highly competitive environment,
because it gets results for both the individual and the corporations
they represent. However, these individuals will often cause long-
term harm, both to their co-workers and the organization as a
whole, due their manipulative, deceitful, abusive, and often
fraudulent behaviour
Reference: "The Sociopath Next Door : the Ruthless Versus the
Rest of Us" by Martha Stout.
New York : Broadway Books, 2005.
Martha Stout says: "4% of all people are born
sociopaths/sciopaths/psychopaths." There is no cure. A written
test, the MMPI [Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory]
can identify sociopaths. The MMPI also identifies
schizophrenics and several other types of mental illnesses. The
MMPI is reliable to a good level of confidence. The MMPI
should be administered in high school along with the college
boards, or possibly to all high school students. Those with failing
grades on the MMPI should have a chance to receive medical
treatment. Psychiatry, Psychology and the MMPI had not been
invented by the time our Constitution was written. If they had,
the Constitution might have been different.
If sociopaths were identified, they could be kept out of politics.
The problem is that almost all politicians and CEOs may be
sociopaths given that 4% of all people are sociopaths. 4% is a lot
of people. The voters have a right to know the MMPI scores of
the candidates.

Highly recommended documentary
http://www.moviesfoundonline.com/power_of_nightmares.htm
Apologies if this has already been posted here but I thought you all would be interested in this documentary by the BBC.... I was very interested to see Dick Cheney was huge part of the propaganda spread about Russia in the 80s.
"This documentary offers a remarkable insight into the reality of our current fear induced climate. Adam Curtis chronicles the rise of neo-conservatism and the resulting change in the world's political agenda orchestrated by those who place their trust in the philosophical ideal of the necessity of evil to unite a country. The filmmaker manages to successfully pluck apart the myth of the reality of there being a logistically organized terror network, let alone one that is managing to orchestrate terror attacks from a cave in the remote mountains of Afghanistan. His arguments are backed up by some eye opening interviews with authorities on the field of Islamic fundamentalism, members of the US government and members of the US judicial system. These insights are parred with concrete, startling facts and the result is a program that manages to shake us awake making us aware of a far more realistic terror threat namely that of psychological warfare carried out by the powers that be, accompanied by a sensationalist media frenzy. I cannot recommend this program highly enough." -imdb.com
And there's also this one:
Dick Cheney speaks out 13 years ago on reasons not to invade Iraq.

GWB is the man in charge. He is not stupid. A rotten person, but not stupid. Don't blame the wrong man. To paraphrase the Clinton campaign slogan: "It's the Prez, stupid!"
Don't blame Dick, blame Lynn - she is the brains of the Cheney family.
